PURPOSE: The OBCGS Bookstore strives to provide historical and genealogical resources to our members, research libraries and the general public. While our focus is primarily western NC, we will consider any historical or genealogical resource that might be of help to our members. We publish many of our own books but also provide an outlet for others to advertize and sell their works. NEW! Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church South History (Mt. Pleasant Holston Conf.) VOL. 1-4,

compiled by Asbury Methodist Church and OBCGS - membership changes, transfers, deaths, births and marriages are documented in this registry kept by the church starting with the first volume in1878. Volume 2 begins in 1928, where the first volume ended; volume 3 begins in 1938, where volume 2 ended. Volume 4 is a summary of the broader records that covered the Biltmore, Mt. Pleasant, Skyland and West Chapel churches at their quarterly meetings of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The quarterly meeting notes in Volume 4 are comprised of handwritten notes from 1890-1899 and then a typewritten form was used which are included from the years 1909-1913. NEW! “Calvary Episcopal Church Records, Vol. 1-4”, edited by OBCGS – Established in 1857 and

located in Fletcher, NC on the border of Henderson and Buncombe Counties, the historic Calvary Episcopal

Church was home to some of the earliest families settling in western North Carolina. Four volumes of hand-

written church records have been scanned, organized, indexed and bound into four books by OBCGS

volunteers. The first volume runs from 1870-1885, Volume 2 covers 1885-1900, Volume 3 covers 1900-1910

and the last book runs from 1910-1920. Through the generosity of the church, these books have been made

available to researchers and they contain such details as member baptisms, marriages, burials and

confirmation records providing possible clues for your missing ancestors.

Early Buncombe Co. African-American Marriage Records 1814-1860’s, by Pat Dockery – over 450

residents responded to the NC General Assembly Act requesting them to acknowledge their cohabitation. The information was sent to the county court or justice of the peace. NEW! History of Medicine in Asheville, by Freeman Irby Stephens, M.D. - Dr. Stephens wrote this book in

the last decade of his life (dying at age 81) after enjoying an active retirement from his medical practice in

Asheville from 1948 - 1981. He wanted to preserve the history of medicine in Asheville as he was fascinated

by the many characters in practice. He also thought the period 1880 - 1930 when Asheville became the

nation's best-known center for tuberculosis treatment was important. This book contains biographical sketches

of many of Asheville's physicians, including a special section on women doctors and black physicians. He

sourced information from the newspapers, the Buncombe County Medical Society, personal interviews and

several local museums and libraries in the area. Well written and engaging, this is a beautiful hard bound book

and it was printed through support from the Western Carolina Medical Society and a host of sponsors after

Each church submitted a list of those who died in the previous year from 1898 - 1993 and the author pulled these lists out of the minutes to be organized in this book. Register of Deaths in the City of Asheville, April 1898 - Aug 1909, by Ruth Dilling – this book is a copy

of the actual register of deaths and burials in Asheville before death certificates were required. It covers deaths that occurred elsewhere with burials in Asheville, and most interestingly, deaths occurring in Asheville with burials elsewhere. During the 1880s and continuing well into the 20th century, Asheville and Buncombe Co. were a "Mecca" for the treatment of tuberculosis. Deaths occurred in Asheville, but the remains were shipped to other locations for burial, especially along the eastern seaboard. Graham Co. Marriages Vol. 2, 1911-1940, by Merrell Jenkins Riddle, Ed. D. - the second volume of Graham

Co. marriages contains the remainder of the marriages from the 1872-1926 register as well as marriages through 1940 from the 1927-1965 register. Fortunately, more marriages licenses are included. Annals of Haywood County, by W. C. Allen – this volume is an update of the original printed in 1908 at the

Haywood Co. 1810 Census, compiled by Sandy Samz – Haywood County was formed in 1808 and included

Haywood Co. Marriage Bonds, 1808-1870, by James & Vivian Wooley – the act authorizing marriage
