Perfomax is the Seco range of indexable insert drills. The strong, square inserts offer four cutting edges per insert and the possibility to use our most modern insert grades.

Crownloc® is a range of Seco drills with exchangeable crowns, designed to offer high quality holes at a lower cost. Featuring new geometry, coating and locking interface, Crownloc improves chip evacuation and wear resistance in a variety of materials. Moreover, it requires no regrinding or resetting. Decrease your cost-per-hole and get longer tool life. Crownloc offers superior wear resistance as well as hole quality; increasing the output and saving you money. Drilling begins on page 42.

SOLID END MILLINGIn addition, we now feature Niagara solid end milling kits. From general purpose to elite series cutters, our offering has an end mill for every type of application. See page 34.

We now feature our NEW Duratomic® chrome coating technology for steel turning, on page 6. This new edge intelligence coating makes it impossible to discard unused inserts. We also have several other options for turning kits for materials such as stainless steels, cast iron and high temp alloys. Whether you are looking for an insert for a finishing operation or a heavy roughing operation, or maybe something in between, there are kits available for all types of operations. Kits are also available for products featuring our Jetstream Tooling technology. Not only is it available for turning but now also grooving and cut-off applications. For turning, start on Page 5.

MULTIPLE-EDGE MILLING FOR LARGE AND SMALL JOBS Negative cutters with positive effective cutting rake angles, such as Double Octomill and Square 6, provide multiple benefits. They allow the use of double sided inserts giving the economy of a negative milling cutter, and the Square T4-08 tangentially mounted insert cutter. The positive geometries used on these cutters reduce heat generation, therefore providing extended tool life. They also provide freer cutting action which lowers power consumption and wear and tear on your machine tool.

For high performance square shoulder milling, the Turbo family of cutters is the industry’s most comprehensive and versatile solution. Turbo 10 is the newest addition to the range that also includes Turbo 6, Turbo 12 and Turbo 18. The Turbo family uses the insert cutting edge length in the new naming convention which describes exactly what it is, thus making it easier for you to find the right tool. Turbo kits are available from 3/8 to 2” diameters and can take up to .669” depth of cut in profiling applications. New to the kit family of face milling is the LN14 which provides four thick cutting edges giving the added toughness needed in difficult materials. Milling begins on page 17.

TURNINGMaking it easy! That’s what Seco is all about. The next five pages highlight an exciting selection of turning product kits that will work tremendously in many applications, whether you are machining steel or high temp alloys.

CHIP GROOVES Let the Secolor Cube help you determine which kit is best for your process. Generally, we describe these types of operations as Finishing, Medium-Rough Machining, or Rough Machining.

Finish Machining – Lighter depths of cut and lighter feed rates. Chip control can be problematic. Ideally we want chip grooves that are designed for light depth and light feed.

Always remember, that it is important in most cases to achieve depth of cut equal to or greater than the nose radius size.

Medium-Rough Machining – Rough operations at medium feeds and medium depths of cut. Lighter duty machinery with lower horsepower, smaller components, along with thin walled parts is a good fit.

Rough Machining - Operations can be aggressive in depth of cut, and feed rates. Part surfaces can be challenging and shows signs of scale or other irregular surface conditions.

GRADES Grades are offered with either more toughness or more wear resistance in mind depending on the operation being performed and the material that is being cut. (Seco grade numbers are based on the ISO classification system.)

A lower number means a harder grade, offering more wear resistance and higher spindle speeds. For example, TP1501 is harder than TP2501.

FINISH MACHINING At low depth of cut Typical ap = .008-.032” and f = .008 in/rev.

MEDIUM-ROUGH MACHINING Typical one pass machining at ap = .032-.120” and f = .012 in/rev.

ROUGH MACHINING At higher depth of cut and feed rate in most cases with difficult surface conditions such as scale, irregularities and other conditions leading to interruptions and edge damage. Typically ap = .120-.280” and f = .020 in/rev.

STAINLESS STEELStainless steel turning kits are available with a choice of two original Duratomic grades – TM2000 for high cutting speeds and maximum productivity, and TM4000 for the extra toughness needed for reliability in interrupted cuts. The MF4 chipbreaker has a unique design for enhanced productivity and longer tool life in stainless turning, for unprecedented performance and excellent surface finish. The “D” style holders draw inserts down and back into the pocket for more secure insert holding.

CAST IRONAchieve excellent results with Seco’s original Duratomic cast iron turning grades TK1001 and TK2001. The TK1001 is the ideal insert for achieving increased productivity in gray irons. TK1001’s supreme wear resistance, can handle the heat and has no problem with higher speed. TK2001 is the reliable insert grade for gray and ductile irons, where unstable conditions and interrupted cut are present. TK2001 is an ideal choice in light finishing applications because it maintains a sharp edge.

JETSTREAM TOOLING® DUOParticularly effective on titanium and high temp alloys where chip control is problematic, Jetstream Tooling is a revolutionary way to improve chip control in almost all materials. We recommend a minimum pump pressure of 200 psi, but you’ll see dramatic improvements in chip control, tool life, and the opportunity to use increased cutting speeds as the pressure is increased to 1000 psi.

FEATURED GRADES TS2000 – A unique TiAlN coating, with improved coating adhesion, and a new edge preparation technique combined to give you increased speed capability, improved surface finishes and better tool life consistency. TS2500 – A tougher alternative to TS2000, also with the improved TiAlN coating. The added toughness of this grade offering fits better into a general environment where more security may be needed. CP500 – A very tough PVD coated alternative to TS2500. Works well in low SFM applications, and offers greater application security, especially in components with irregular surfaces. This grade handles interrupted cutting and scaled surfaces with ease.

MP2500 Duratomic®

CVD-coated grade featuring DuratomicTM coating. Basic grade for milling steel and easy/medium difficult stainless steel, with or without coolant.

F40MPVD-coated grade for fine to medium rough milling. First choice for milling with small feeds and/or low cutting speeds. Excellent for milling when there is a risk of vibrations and when coolant is used. Recommended for machining superalloys.

BASIC GRADES AVAILABLE IN KITS

MP1500 Duratomic®

CVD Grade for medium rough milling under stable conditions at high cutting speeds and for milling hardened steel. Excellent grade for roughing grey and nodular cast iron.

MK2050CVD Grade for cast iron machining. Highly wear resistant grade used in all cast iron applications. The nanolaminate coating has very high wear resistance properties and edge integrity.

MS2500Optimized PVD grade for super alloy materials, also suitable for rough milling in tool steel.

MS2050PVD coated grade developed for Titanium and Titanium Alloys. The coating is developed to aid in the reduction of built up edge on the insert which extends tool life 2 to 3 times longer.

SQUARE SHOULDER MILLING

SQUARE T4 -08Square T4-08 is a square shoulder mill with a tangentially mounted insert offering 4 cutting edges on a 90° square shoulder mill, designed with positive rake insert geometries to reduce heat and cutting pressure. Smaller diameter tools can handle larger depth of cut because the tangentially mounted insert. The cutter bodies core diameter is large compared to conventionally mounted insert tools and can handle a depth of cut up to .315” while profiling. This is an ideal solution to multiple cutting edges on small diameter tools.

SQUARE 6™ -04Square 6-04 is the smaller version of the best multiple edge square shoulder mill on the market! The Sq6-04 utilizes a trigon shaped insert, giving 6 cutting edges on a 90° square shoulder mill, but was engineered with modern cutting geometries to reduce heat and cutting pressure allowing it to be fully utilized on today’s high tech machine tools. HIGH FEED 4Highfeed 4 incorporates new close-pitch and normal pitch designs, together with new inserts – LO06 – that allow for more teeth/insert pockets per cutter diameter, as compared to the existing range. With more teeth, higher feeds are achieved through the additional insert which excels in high-velocity, high-speed cutting of hard and tough-to-machine materials – especially when using smaller machines with high-rpm/low torque spindles. Performance results of the new cutters in terms of speed and efficiency far exceed those using larger, higher horsepower machines and taking slower heavier cuts.

SMG v2 is the foundation for a new and accurate way of organizing work materials and choosing the correct speed, feed rate and depth of cut for any work material and any Seco tool. In addition to using a greater number of work material groups com-pared to our previous system, SMG v2 also incorporates a reference material - or standard - for each group. The machinability of all other materials within that group can be compared to the standard, allowing for adjustments to the cutting data and accounting for the unique characteristics of each material.

THE USE OF SMG v2 IS ILLUSTRATED BELOWAs shown in Table I, the reference material for work material group P4 is 1045, for P5 it is 4140 steel and for H5 it is 4140 hardened to 50 HRC. 4140 steel is available in a wide variety of hardness and tensile strengths. It will be expected that the machinability will vary with these properties.

Table II gives some examples of 4140 in different conditions.

The graphs indicate how the speed recommendation for a specific material can be adjusted to account for the different properties of the steel. As an example, consider 4140 with a tensile strength (UTS) of 145 ksi. The standard material for SMG P5 is 4140 steel with a tensile strength of 100 ksi. Since the material of interest is 45% stronger, the cutting speed will have to be reduced. Following the black arrows in Figure 1, it can be seen that a speed 75% of that recommended for 4140 at 100 ksi should be used. So if a cutting speed of 900 sf/min is suggested for a tool of interest when machining 4140 at 100 ksi, a speed of 675 sf/min (900 X 0.75) should be used if the 4140 has a tensile strength of 145 ksi.

If the 4140 is quenched and tempered to a hardness of 45 HRC, an accurate cutting speed can be obtained by using Figure 2. The standard material for SMG H5 is 4140 heat treated to a hardness of 50 HRC. Logically, a softer material, in this case 45 HRC, can be machined at a higher speed. Since the hardness, 45 HRC, is 90% that of the standard material, Figure 2 shows a speed 120% that of the standard could be used. If a speed of 200 sfpm is recommended when machining 4140 at 50 HRC, a speed of 240 sf/min (200 X 1.2) could be used if the 4140 is 45 HRC.
