Dear Visiting Boaters,
The City of Marathon and Boot Key Harbor City Marina would like to extend you a
warm welcome to the heart of the Florida Keys.
Marathon offers two grocery stores, a public library, a hospital and two post offices.
There are numerous marine retailers and many restaurants and bars for your enjoyment
Boot Key Harbor City Marina is located adjacent to the beautiful municipal park and
sports complex. The harbor is minutes from Sombrero Reef, an internationally renowne
diving and snorkeling venue and public bus service connects us to Key West and the
mainland.
The City Marina administers the harbor mooring field; new arrivals may contact our
office to receive a mooring assignment on a first come, first served basis. Our continuing
efforts to improve water quality have earned us the Clean Marina designation from the
Florida DEP. All mooring customers receive a weekly pumpout at no cost, and anchored
vessels may call in for a pumpout. Dinghy dockage customers are entitled to the use ofour laundry facilities, library, television/lounge area, trash receptacles, recycling, bicycle
racks, and vehicle parking.
We are pleased to be a sponsor of the2007/2008 Boot Key Harbor Cruisers Guide and
wish you a pleasant stay.

As the sun rises over Boot Key Harbor, theamiliar sounds o dingy motors chug to lie
as cruisers and liveaboard boaters begintheir day and the Boot Key Harbor Cruiser s
Net crackles to lie.Every morning, beginning promptly at 9
a.m., radios across the Harbor switch to VHFchannel 68 or the latest news, gossip andtips that aect the lives o the cruisers livingin one o the most well-protected harbors onthe eastern coast.
Good morning Boot Key Harbor and allthose interested in the area, greeted BevDickerson, proprietor o the Overseas Loungeand one o the net controllers on Saturdaymorning.
The Net began in February 2004 asan inormal communication system thataddressed cruising issues such as mechanicalproblems and area services.
Now, The Net operates on a punctual dailyschedule and handles a variety o cruisingconcerns ranging rom local announcementsand weather alerts to trivia games, recipes, medical advice and personal bartering. TheNet is now so tightly woven into the abrico the oating community that most o theparticipants know what day it is by who iscontrolling the airwaves.
Dickerson & the Overseas preside over The Net on Saturdays and throughout therest o the week control o the orum passesaround between Dockside, the Smorgasboatoperators, and other cruisers.
Mike Atterbery, a Phoenix native who hasbeen living aboard or more than 11 years, isa regular listener and thereore, a recognizedmember o the community in the harbor.
I listen because it generates a sense ocommunity more than anything, he said.
Like a neighborhood watch.Throughout the broadcast, which can last
15 minutes or aslong as necessary, new cruisersare welcomedinto the harborand departingvessels are bida ond arewell.Ater roll call andannouncements, cruiser MartyBrown, who
operates aweather band radio, issues weather updatesor tropical storm warnings and advicescruisers about systems to keep an eye on.
The radio banter lightens up during thetrivia question when cruisers test theirknowledge against their neighbors on hook,or even their landlocked contemporarieswho monitor the harbor via a shore-side
radio. Correct answers are rewarded wcocktails or lunch courtesy o neighestablishments like Burdines, DocksideOverseas. Humorous responses are treathe same manner o other good commnews a crackle o clicking micropsymbolizing congratulatory applause.
Even the Coast Guard, FWC, and City recognize The Net as a valuable tool tothe cruisers living in Boot Key suptimely reports news that keeps the c
abreast o important issues.Ater two years, The Net has b
as important to Boot Key Harbor amangroves protecting it, and whethcruisers are living on a hook, ball, or sVHF ch68 is the requency that bindstogether.

Since the mid 1990s, major telecommunication advances has allowed
cruisers the reedom to work or play anywhere there is connection
to the Internet. Many baby-boomers are throwing o the dockline
earlier because they can telecommute or at least stay in touch. Besides
GPS, the most proound eect on cruisers has been the introduction
o broadband Internet now being delivered wirelessly to a marina or
anchorage near you!
In Boot Key Harbor the City Marina, Burdines, Dockside, and others
are oering WiFi hot spots that cruisers can log in via a membership
program using a secure credit card transaction and roaming services,
just like a cellular company. The cruiser buys one membership that
works in all the marinas and anchorages served by a particular operator
and their roaming partners. $5 or an hour in a cyber-ca has nowbecome fty dollars or an entire month o unlimited use; just like on
and a real bargain or cruisers!
Recently, the addition o built-in wif adapters on laptops
revolutionized the portable ofce once again. Cruisers were quick to
see the advantages o moving the cyber-ca to their own cockpit
Open 24 hours a day and the laptop stays sae and dry!
For cruisers the measure o WiFi success is the ability to use their
laptop rom the boat. The main impediment to this is the low
digital WiFi radios built into the new laptops; they can connect on
short distances, typically under 200 eet. This pretty much limit
use to shore-side locations like the Chiki Tiki at Burdines and Do
in Marathon or the adjacent marinas like Panchos Fuel Dock an
Blanco all o which have unctioning WiFi networks available.
But i the boat is in an anchorage or mooring feld Maratho
Marina or example - cruisers must have high-power WiFi ad
and antennas above deck to enjoy the broadband speed tha
delivers. Happily these adapters are available rom several s(The Smorgasboat water taxi has them in Boot Key harbor).
Your new cruising wireless adapter will work everywhere there
i it has the right characteristics: It must operate on the intern
IEEE 802.11 b and/or g standard. (This is the only WiFi standard.)
an external antenna that can be positioned or best receptio
moving the laptop or is fxed on deck; and it has an output pow
least 100mw.
And hey, ellow cruisers, lets ace act: We spend 99 percent
time in harbor, not on the deep blue; and we like a bargain! Sat
expensive, cellular is expensive and slow, and PACTOR via SSB is
s-l-o-w! Marine WiFi is more aordable and its everywhere we c
go!
Expect the unexpected as the WiFi broadband revolution m like personalized weather orecasts and movies on demand
avorite anchorage! Welcome to the world o marine WiFi!

What you came to the Keys for!

Just pull up a stool to the longest tiki bar in the FloridaKeys, relax and enjoy the scenery. The bartenders are sureto put a smile on your face when you sip on one of theirfrozen favorites or an icy cold beer.
After all, this is what you came to the Keys for.
Sunsets, Fresh Fish, Florida Bay Views, ColdDrinks, and Good Times are our Speciality!
Come by Boat, CarW
you know a hurricane is
proaching, prepare or the worst.
T OFF THE OPEN WATER, or AS
R AWAY FROM THE STORM AS
SSIBLE.
this is impossible, keep in mind
t the right ront quadrant o arricane usually, but not always,
duces the most violent weather.
you boat is easily trailerable,
cuate rom the Keys AS EARLY
POSSIBLE. Monroe County has a
ased evacuation that allows or
ly departure o boaters, tourists,
d those in mobile homes. Please
member that i you wait too long
evacuate, you wont be allowed
take you boat on the road. I you
ce on taking your boat away by
ter, please remember that the
ys drawbridges will be lockedwn once mandatory evacuation
gins.
Marathon is also home to many
at storage acilities and yards that
y remove your boat rom the
ter, but please plan several days
ead. During these emergencies,
ds and marinas are not only
busy helping others, but they must
also begin preparing their own
evacuation and hurricane plans.
Evacuations:
I you must move your boat, frst
inspect the trailer to make sure it is
in proper working condition. Check
tires (including a spare), wheel
bearings, tow hitch and lights. I
you can, put you boat and trailer in a
garage or under a carport. Secure theboat to strong trees or a deadman
anchor. Strip o anything that could
be torn loose during high winds.
Increase the weight o your
trailered outboard by flling the
hull with water. Insert wood blocks
between the trailer rame and the
springs or extra support with the
added weight.
Securing your vessel in the water
Never stay with your boat! Once
your boat is secured you must
seek shelter on land immediately.
Please remember: Monroe CountyHurricane Shelters are closed or the
most severe hurricanes and you will
be orced to evacuate.
Option 1: Berth at a dock that has
sturdy piling and oer reasonable
shelter rom open water and storm
surge. Double up all mooring lines
but provide enough slack so your
boat can rise with the higher tides.
Cover all lines with chae protectors,
or double neoprene garden hose,
at points where the line is likely to
wear an put out extra enders and
enderboards.
Option 2: Anchor your vessel in a
protected harbor where the bottom
can allow a good anchor hold. An
advantage to anchoring is that theboat can more easily respond to
wind and water changes without
striking docks or other boats. Heavy
and extra anchors are needed or
this option and enough line should
be on hand to allow a scope o at
least 10:1 or each anchor.
Option 3: Hurricane holes are
ideal locations to moor your boat
during a hurricane. These are deep,
narrow covers or inlets surrounded
by a number o sturdy trees which
which block the wind and provide
a tie-o or anchor lines. The bestlocation or a hurricane hole is one
ar enough inland to avoid the most
severe winds and tides, yet close
enough to reach under short notice.
Saety-conscious cruisers may want
to scout out a satisactory hurricane
hole ahead o time.
One of the many possible
arrangements that can be used
secure a boat in a hurricane ho
Using three anchors set 120
apart allow the boat to swing a
face the wind. This is an especia
good technique in crowded
harbors because the boat will n
swing as wide an arc as a boa
riding only two anchors.
