Padre’s Corner SEPTEMBER 1, 2019 TWENTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “Life Teen” runs Catholic youth ministry training conventions on the West Coast, designed to help pastors and staff to uncover helpful strategies in connecting young people to their faith. From June 9-12, I went to one such convention with Sister Laura Urbano at the “Double Tree by Hilton Resort” in Scottsdale, Arizona. The one hundred degree temperatures were muted by the dry heat of the region. The conference featured a series of informative lectures on the aforementioned theme. Those we attended included: “Iphones and Hormones : Middle School and High School Differences” (competing ideas in culture, technology and parishes), “Lost In the Middle : Ministry to Hispanic Youth” (new immigrants are caught in the conflicts and flux of two opposing cultures), “The Modern Areopagus: Affirming the Good in Teen Culture” (parallels of Saint Paul 2,000 years ago bringing Jesus to a twisted and confused culture as pastoral staffs do today), and “Lost In Translation : Tools for Reaching Hispanic Parents” (striking the balance of faith and trust, within the social mixes of a machismo and illegal immigrant quagmire). There were also Masses each day of the convention, underscoring the need for the Blessed Mother Mary in life who monitors our beating heart. During my time in Arizona, I received disturbing news that there was graffiti at Saint Francis of Assisi Church (upside down cross, “666” as an expression of the evil devil, and an image of possible gang in motion). The sequence of events, just a few days after possible gang-related homicides, apparently triggered a reaction (further proof of needing God). I have a growing sense of persecution against Churches. On June 11, the second full day in Arizona, I arose with concerns about the graffiti attack at Saint Francis of Assisi, wondering about the meaning behind it. An Indian pastor from Jacksonville, Florida told me he had a similar incident a few years ago and concluded it was an initiation rite for a satanic group in the area. The interconnected triangles symbolize an invitation to the devil to come into the building – meaning one of our parish churches. At the morning Mass, the Phoenix Diocese priest homilist addressed the issue of discouragement for believers in our complicated and turbulent times. He cited the story of Saint Barnabas, who was born in 1 A.D. Cyprus. The disciples gave him that name, meaning “son of encouragement consolation” though he was born as Joseph. Born into wealth, Barnabas would sell and donate all of the proceeds to the Church. He would also be the liaison of reconciliation for the converted Saint Paul, who was eyed with suspicion by the disciples considering his Christian persecution background as Saul. At dinner that night some lovely youth ministers from Sacramento, California were met. They discussed the challenges of secularism, or indifference to God, pertaining not just to Northern California but as a worldwide issue of spiritual challenge. The goal, as purveyors of God’s message, is closely linked to finding the potential goodness in each person we meet. The Indian word for it is “Namaste” or “I respect the God in you.” Arizona was followed by flying to Denver, Colorado to stay with good friends in a suburb called Golden. They invited me to three games at Coors Field pitting my San Diego Padres at the Colorado Rockies. On June 14, proving that the art of baseball can imitate life, the Padres were losing 11-5 heading into the ninth inning. Wanting to stay to the end, despite the incredible odds against winning for San Diego, I yielded to the wishes of my hosts who were tired. The Friars, a nickname for the Padres, defied the enormous odds by scoring six runs in the ninth and five in the twelfth en route to an outlandish 16-12 win. Life lessons from this game: never let losing, the odds against you winning, adversity, hopelessness, nay-sayers, and a sense of futility defy our innate skills of faith-filled optimism and learning wisdom when at the clutches of defeat. In this way our interactions with culture teach us about perseverance in the midst of the “thrills of winning and the agony of defeat” (old theme song for “ABC’s Wide World Of Sports” from the 1970’s). On Saturday, June 15, there was a morning encounter with the Saint Mother Cabrini Shrine in Golden. Built in 1929, the area was originally purchased by the future saint in August of 1909 to serve as a summer camp for an orphanage. Cabrini first came to Denver in 1902, at the invitation of Bishop Matz, to minister to the Italian immigrants working in the mines. Reflected in her journal, “I am happy to have a mission in the Rocky Mountains where I always desired to go. God be blessed.” Mother Cabrini’s stamina to found this work was fueled by the life adversities she faced including being born two months premature (wake up pro-abortion politicians) on July 15, 1850. One of eleven children, she was one of four that survived early childhood. She established in Codogno, Italy of 1880 the “Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.” She authored sixty-seven institutions of schools, hospitals, and orphanages before dying in Chicago at the age of sixty-seven on December 22, 1917. She was canonized a saint on July 7, 1946. Like the battles of life on a baseball field and our individual lives, Saint Mother Cabrini teaches us survival skills through the lens of faith. She is also the patron saint for finding car parking spots: “Oh Mother Cabrini don’t be a meanie, please find a spot for my machine.” From 1996 to 1998, while stationed at Sacred Heart in Newburgh, I would often bring the school children to her large statue to be so inspired. .........(Continued on page 3)

TODAY TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28-29 Those who are humble will find favor with God. Everyone should realize that there is much we can learn from each other. Even the most knowledgeable people need to be humble enough to know that they can still learn from others. Second Reading: Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24a The Hebrews are informed that they are not approaching an untouchable mountain etched with gloom and fear. Rather, they have neared "the city of the living God, Jerusalem." The Hebrews have approached a joyful gathering of angels, God our judge, and Jesus, who brought us a new covenant. Gospel: Luke 14:1, 7-14 Jesus went to share a meal with one of the leading Pharisees when he noticed other guests competing for places of honor at the table. He warned that a guest who takes the place of honor may be asked to move to the lowest place. Yet a guest who takes the lowest place is honored when a better position is offered by their host. He then added, "He who humbles himself will be exalted." Monday 1 Thes 4:13-18; Lk 4:16-30 Tuesday 1 Thes 5:1-6, 9-11; Lk 4:31-37 Wednesday Col 1:1-8; Lk 4:38-44 Thursday Col 1:9-14; Lk 5:1-11 First Friday Col 1:15-20; Lk 5:33-39 First Saturday Col 1:21-23; Lk 6:1-5

PADRES CORNER CONT’D Mother Cabrini was experienced again on Father’s Day, June 16, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in the old Italian section of Denver. Colorado was the recipient of many immigrants from Italy due to the developing mining industry. Cabrini was revered then and now. Her statute inspired one about the overall positives of Church history. Analogous to many other cities where the Church gained a foothold, many of the faithful have fled to the suburbs in retirement or returned to the Lord, replaced by newbies who are not Catholic or indifferent to organized religion. The same emptying of older churches has puzzling concerns for the future be it Denver or Newburgh. A pastor in his eighties governs this parish. The early seven Mass in the morning had perhaps sixty people, and the two Masses behind it average just a bit more with no children. This saint represents our potential and resiliency. Back to baseball for more spiritual lessons, perhaps, that can be applied to our growth as persons through the lens of faith. I attended three of the San Diego at Colorado games in Coors Field, named after the beer company founded in 1873. One fan asked me an intriguing question, if I was a baseball player. What would be the song on the public address system as I came to bat? My reply to her, after some thought, was “Little Willy” from 1972 by the English group “Sweet.” Often played on the Bogota High School jukebox, the words “But you can’t push Willy around – Willy won’t go” gave me a musical push to strive and become strong as a young person. In a world of so much political, economic, and Church disunity we all need to be spiritually tough. With so much verbal sniping in the media and persecution against Church teachings, especially on Her teachings of what constitutes the beginnings of life and defines marriage, we each need to be strengthened by far more than favorite sport teams and rock group songs. The strength we need is to be in union with God in sacramental prayer, and true repentance of our sins. Father Bill

MESSAGE FROM ARCHDIOCESE The archdiocesan lay review board has found credible and substantiated allegations of sexual abuse of a minor made against Father Donald Timone. In keeping with the policy of the Archdiocese of New York, and the promises made by the Bishops of the United States in the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, his ability to function as a priest has been removed; in fact, he has not been permitted to function as a priest since December 2018. Father Timone was in residence here at Sacred Heart while serving as the area director for the office of Christian and Family Development; and as temporary administrator from March 25, 1988 to January 31, 2001. The Archdiocese of New York is notifying all of Father Timone’s former assignments of this allegation, and requesting that if you have information or concerns about Father Timone that you contact the district attorney; you may also contact the victims assistance coordinator at [email protected] or 646-794-2949.
