WhiletheBoroughofCaldwellhasaquaint“Mayberry”feelandisjust1.2squaremiles,manyareamazedtolearnweareacommunitymadeupofover7,800residents,oneofwhomwasGroverCleveland,the22ndand24thPresidentoftheUnitedStates,whoseboyhoodhomestillstandsonBloomfieldAve.WearealsohometothethrivingCaldwellUniversity,abeautifulOlmsteadPark,aCarnegieLibrary,intheheartofourdowntownandvariouspicturesquehousesofworship.Ourschoolsareoutstandingandourhomesaresetonbeautifultree-linedstreets.WetrulyarethehiddengemofEssexCounty!

Greetingsresidents.DespiteanunseasonableNor’easterwhichhittheregiononMarch14,springisFINALLYhere.Whilethestormwasnotasbadasitcouldhavebeen,itstilldumpedaboutafootofsnowonCaldwell--that’ssayingsomething.However,theBoroughwasreadytohandlethesituation,andIwouldfirstliketorecognizealltheworkthatwentintomakingsuretheraodswereclearedandresidentsweresafe.Youmayhavenoticedafrontloadertruckplowingtheroadwaysandparkinglotsthroughouttown.Thistruckwaspurchasedaround18monthsagothroughtheeffortsofCouncilmanKrisBrownandtheDepartmentofPublicWorks.ThisparticularpieceofequipmenthasbeenveryhelpfulforDPWindealingwithmajorsnowevents.Ontopofthis,thereareadditionalinvestmentsinDPWequipmentplannedoverthenextyear,whichwe’reexcitedabout.DPWwasoutworkingveryhardthroughoutthestorm.AbigthankyouisinordertotheentireDPWcrewfortheirefforts.Asidefromequipmentupgradesandsnowclearing,IwouldalsoliketorecognizeourOfficeofEmergencyManagement.OEMisstaffedofmostlydedicated

volunteerswhoarecommittedtoprovidingresourcestoresidentsduringemergencysituations.Wheneverthereisaweathereventwhichcouldaffectresponsetimes,OEMsetsupa“standby”crewatthefirehousetomonitorweatherforecastsandconditions,keeptrackofanyroadclosuresand/orpoweroutages,andevaluatehowwelltheemergencyservicesarecoping.Whileeveryoneissafeathome,OEMistherereadytohelp!Duringthelaststorm,theysetupthenightbeforeandworkedthroughtheentirenightintothefollowingeveningwhenthesnowfinallysubsided.IwouldliketothankCVFDChiefGaryGaramella,FireOfficialMarkGuiliano,DeputyChiefAndrewPollara,AndrewHenderson,BrianWhite,andShaneCunningham.Nowenoughwiththesnow,asImentioned,itisfinallyspring(andsummerwillbeherebeforeyouknowit).Thismeanswarmerweatherandmoretimespentoutdoorssoakinginthesunandfreshair.Withthat,IamremindedoftheBorough’seffortstoreduceourcarbonfootprintwhilesimultaneouslysavingtaxpayermoney.Wearecontinuingupgradesandrepairsatthewastewatertreatmentplant,amongtheminstallationofsolarpanels–justintimetotakeadvantageofthelongsummer

days!Additionally,theBoroughisupgradingmunicipalbuildingswithenergyefficientlighting.Theanticipatedsavingsinenergycostswillpayfortheseupgradeswithinjustacoupleofyears,whichwillresultinrealsavingsinthebudget.TheseupgradeswillmakeCaldwellmoreenergyandfiscallyefficient.Finally,don’tforgetthatbulkpickupisnowbeingdonemonthlyratherthanquarterly.Despitethe

What’sNewintheCaldwell-WestCaldwell
Attheelementarylevel,alldistrictfifthgradersrecentlycompletedaninterdisciplinaryprojectinwhichtheydevelopedideasforrevitalizingdowntownCaldwellandWestCaldwell.Studentsresearchedareasofhistoricalinterest,exploredpotentialwaysthatbusinessescanengagethecommunity,andconsideredpotentialsuggestionsfortrafficflowandaccessibility.ThefifthgraderspresentedtheresultsoftheirworkatpubliceventsateachoftheelementaryschoolsonMarch30and31.
GroverClevelandMiddleSchoolrecentlywelcomedRutgersgraduateEricLeGrand.LeGrand,whostarredinfootballatRutgersuntilatacklein2010paralyzedhimfromtheneckdown,hasbecomeaninspirationtoothersthroughhispositivity.Havingrecentlypublishedhisbiography,“Believe:MyFaithAndTheTackleThatChangedMyLife”,LeGrand'smessagetothestudentsincludedthisadvice:
