Nicola & Luke17th January 2014 | Wanaka NZ

This gorgeous couple met on their OE in London and chose The Venue in Wanaka for their ceremony and reception. Incorporating the tube map into their invitations and table seating plan based on how they first met in London gave their day a very personal and creative touch. Their special day was a perfect blend of fun and elegance and was described by Nicola as AWESOME!

"The One"WE SHARE THE SAME

SILLY HUMOUR, VERY IMPORTANT WHEN YOU

FIND ‘THE ONE’

Luke was ‘the one’ for me I knew about 1 month after we started dating. We were both on our OE living in London.

We were in a cab heading home and as Luke was stepping

out of the cab to head away, I blurted out Seeya, Love ya!! I completely surprised myself and Luke! From that point I

knew things were meant to be and we have been together ever

since.

Page 7: Borrowed and Blue Issue 2

8 BORROWED&BLUE

Page 9: Borrowed and Blue Issue 2

The proposalI was 6 months pregnant with our first daughter Sienna, who is now almost 5 years old. Luke was away in Queenstown snowboarding for the week. I remember driving up our long drive way wondering why our garage door was wide open. Immediately thinking we had been burgled I started to think what is a 6 month pregnant women going to do or find in her house!!? Slightly panicked I ‘waddled’ my way into the house to be greeted with a very nervous/white looking Luke.

He had decorated the table with rose petals, lit a few candles and all of a sudden tried to get down on one knee whilst shaking and asked me to marry him.

I burst into tears and I guess as they say the rest is history! I have to also put in though that Luke was very good and had actually rung my Dad a few days before hand to ask him that extremely hard question. He was half way talking to my Dad on his mobile asking that very hard question and his cell phone cut out!! Poor old Luke had thought Dad had hung up on him meaning it was a NO! Thankfully Luke got the guts to ring Dad back and ask again, this time all went according to plan.

All about the dressI didn’t really have any set style I wanted, I went in with an open mind knowing I would be trying a few on that I had requested. The dress I decided upon wasn’t one I looked at but was picked out by Kirsty from your Wellington store; she clearly has a fantastic eye. As soon as I tried it on myself, mum and bridesmaids all agreed that it was the perfect one!

"Nicola was such a lovely bride to work with, she was open to styles and was happy to listen to suggestions. Being from Southland her decision was made on the first day she came to see us for a consultation. I knew that the Bonny gown would be perfect based on what Nicola had told me about her wedding. It is so rewarding to see the gown “in action” and that working together Nicola and I had found the perfect look. Because Nicola ordered 8 months before her wedding everything just ran smoothly and there was no stress for her. I would recommend that to every bride to make it easy and straight forward!"

WHAT MADE YOUR ASTRA BRIDAL EXPERIENCE SPECIAL?The girls were professional but personal at the same time. Nothing was a problem. They listened and understood what my style was and what I liked. They asked questions and not once did I feel uncomfortable.

Nicola'sAdvice for future brides:

If your children are going to be attending your wedding and are young like mine (2 years and 4 years), definitely allocate in your wedding budget hiring a babysitter for the reception.

Also found having a wedding website handy, we paid a very small fee to have our own website giving guests all the information about Wanaka and information about the wedding. We also had people RSVP this way.

And of course HAVE FUN!

Like everything at Astra Bridal we have searched for the best options for each gown and have a big range to choose from. Petticoats can be purchased or hired.

What body shape are you?

Inverted TriangleYour shape

Broad shoulders tapering down to slim legs.

Your aimTo balance your shoulders and

visually reduce their proportion. Create an hourglass by having a matching triangle at the bottom.

Suggested shapes or features

An A-line or fuller skirt is a must, this will balance out the shoulders. Straps can cut the wide shoulders and take the eye away. A structured fabric

will give you more shape. You can wear a shorter gown

because of your slim legs.

HourglassYour shape

Curvaceous, a noticeable bust and hips with a small waist.

Your aimTo show off your curves and

contain it all in a great gown.

Suggested shapes or features

Go for something constructed. A bias, lightweight gown may

make you look lumpy and bumpy. If you wear the fit and

flare mermaid shape, then you really will show off your assets to the best advantage.

PearYour shape

You are petite around the shoulders, but then have a

fuller hip or thigh area.

Your aimHide those hips and show off

your delicate décolletage.

Suggested shapes or features

A corset top with a full skirt is great for the pear. It looks feminine, but can hide hips

under a lovely large triangle.

AppleYour shape

Round and cuddly. You have no waist definition. Your bust and

hips are smaller than your waist.

Your aimPull in the waist and give the illusions of a lovely

hourglass figure.

Suggested shapes or features

Bridal is great for you, so look at ruched gowns, and the

A-line skirt is definitely your friend. A quality construction

with lots of boning is essential, for defining the waist.

AthleticYour shape

Wiry and super fit. Taut arms, maybe muscly

shoulders and a flat waist.

Your aimShow off all your hard work and get you out of the sweatpants.

Suggested shapes or features

Backless gowns – you have worked for that tone, show it

off. Lots of interesting necklines can feature your shoulders too.

ColumnYour shape

A bit straight up and down. Can be boyish and either

petite or tall. Not a big bust, and a small bottom.

Your aimMake you look feminine

and if you are tall, use your height to your advantage.

Suggested shapes or features

Soft fabrics which flow and drape. A nicely constructed waist, to

pull in a waist. A gathered train feature at the back can give the

illusion of a fuller bottom.

DEStination Wanaka

When we were approached by Wanaka Tourism to be part of a shoot we jumped at the chance, Who wouldn’t? Stunning location, amazing and talented suppliers to work with, and I can’t leave out the models who spent the day very patiently being bossed around to get the perfect look.

The setting at Rippon Vineyard created the perfect look for the theme that Carla from Wanaka Tourism wanted, Rippon overlooks Lake Wanaka and the rustic yet opulent hall provided the ideal stage for the glamourous old world theme. I was also lucky enought to sample some of their gorgeous wine at lunch!

With the help of our fantastic consultant Liz from Takapuna we selected the Bonny 8309 and a long 2 tier veil for Miriam to wear. This gown is the perfect choice for Miriam’s shape as it highlights her gorgeous natural curves and provides structure through the waist helping to accentuate her waist. Frankie, our wee flowergirl, wore the D1217 flowergirl dress.

The Bonny 8309 features exquisite beaded lace motifs adorning tulle atop allover lace adding richness and depth. An exquisite beaded and rhinestone band wraps around the natural waist. and is finished with a lace-up corset back.

This bride came to us with only a couple of weeks until her wedding. She had originally had a consultation and fallen in love with a gown. But pricing was an issue so she found another place she could buy the gown from for a little bit less.

With confidence she placed her order and awaited her gown. Once it arrived the terrible realisation came that the store had obviously ordered the wrong size and not realised that being tall she would require extra length.

She wanted us to step in and save the day, to talk to Maggie Sottero for her about fixing the problems. We tried our best, but unfortunately the message from Maggie was – the certificate of authenticity is meaningless unless you buy from an authorised retailer. They won’t work to fix problems with anyone other than an authorised retailer.

So how do you find out who is authorised and who is not? Easy, check on the Maggie Sottero (or any designers) website. If the store isn’t listed then it isn’t authorised to retail the brand. If you want to double check then email Maggie Sottero, they are always happy to help clarify for any customer.

They did that earlier in the year for a bride wanting to order from another company in Christchurch offering to supply Maggie Sottero gowns. She had a tough time getting her money back for a gown that they were never going to be able to supply. In this situation it was early enough before the wedding that we could order the gown and get one happy bride down the aisle in her gown.

So what happened to our first bride you ask?

Well she saved $500 by getting her gown through the back door. But it cost her over $600 in alteration costs and extra fabric to get the gown looking halfway decent. And she confided in us that she now hated her wedding gown because of all the drama.

Buy from Astra Bridal and you get1. The Astra Bridal Guarantee of right gown, right size.2. The backing of the designers guarantee.3. Coverage by our special insurance whilst your property

is on our premises.

“But I have a certificate to say it is real," came the cry from a bride with a Maggie Sottero Meredith that was too small and too short.

We asked the team at Astra Bridal what happens when things go wrong!

Sarah married Hayden

{ 22nd March 2014 }

Sarah and Hayden tied the knot at Elm Cafe in Palmerston North. Their

gorgeous wedding had a vintage feel to it with a colour scheme of

creams, olive green and pink, with bunting and doyleys being used.

Sarah described her wedding day as

"perfect"Photography by Bihn Trin

"spread the love"

"The one"

Hayden and I were set up through a mutual friend of ours whom I had gone to high school with and had recently got back in contact with. On a whim I had asked if her husband had any ‘nice’ friends and little did I know Hayden had asked her the same thing. It definitely felt like it was meant to be. From our first contact with each other I was taken by him. His kindness, warmth and genuine nature brought me comfort and happiness.

AFTER ONLY DATING FOR A MONTH HAYDEN ASKED ME TO GO UP TO AUCKLAND TO WATCH THE COLDPLAY CONCERT. WE COVERED 12 HOURS OF DRIVING OVER THAT WEEKEND, I KNEW AT THE END OF THAT WEEKEND THAT IF WE COULD SIT IN A CAR FOR 6 HOURS STRAIGHT THERE AND BACK AND FEEL COMPLETELY AT EASE THAT WE WERE ONTO SOMETHING GOOD!

The Proposal

For a person who is not into cliché romantic gestures Hayden

got the proposal just right!

It was on an ordinary Sunday evening and I was in my

pyjamas lying in bed after we had actually just had a silly tiff

(unbeknown to me Hayden’s on edge behaviour had been due to

his plan to propose).

He lay next to me and started pulling something out from his bed side table and explained he

had planned to ask me in the morning but couldn’t wait any

longer…

“Sarah will you marry me?”

In my shock of the moment while trying to wipe away many excited tears, I actually forgot to say yes and I remember Hayden

asking “So is it a yes?”

In my eyes his proposal was the most romantic of all as it was

beautifully ordinary!

Magic moments

That’s a tricky one as I honestly was on cloud nine the entire day! I think it would have to be going to have photos taken of the bridal party and enjoying the moment with Hayden, my sister and my best friend Rosie. Our photographer Binh put us right at ease and we all just had so much fun getting the photos taken. I would also say our reception at the Elm Café was fabulous. We had brilliant service and were all treated to a delicious three course meal and we all enjoyed the heartfelt speeches that I’ll never forget!

All about the gownIn my naivety I hadn’t realized that it would take up to 6 months for a dress to be ordered and made, so when I went and contacted Astra Bridal only 4 months prior to our wedding (having had a short engagement), I could have easily been turned away but instead was made to feel that they would do their upmost to accommodate me. When trying dresses on Lisa made me feel extremely comfortable and she gave me her honest opinion which I appreciated. She was able to order in my dress in the short time and Averil the seamstress did an absolutely superb job altering my dress with only a week to go before the big day.

OVERALL I HAD A FAULTLESS AND STRESS LESS EXPERIENCE AT ASTRA BRIDAL, WHICH MADE

FOR A VERY HAPPY BRIDE!

Sarah chose the Christina Rossi 4134

Favourite part of the dress:

That’s a very hard one as I loved every part of my wedding dress. I guess I would say it was its overall elegant simplicity, that it had lace but it wasn’t glitzy and over the top. I loved the beautiful lace trim around the bottom of my dress and liked that it wasn’t strapless.

Why did you choose your dress?

Because it was something a little different without being extreme, that it was flattering with my body shape, classic and I felt really good in it.

106 BORROWED&BLUE

Page 107: Borrowed and Blue Issue 2

Sarah is a lovely lady, very soft spoken and quite

demure so the delicate and soft look of the CR4134

suited her perfectly. Sarah was quite short on time

but hadn’t realised that until she had booked with

us. We were able to do a rush for her which was

really fortunate. Sarah hadn’t expected to go with

this style of gown but after the process of trying

varying styles and necklines which I felt suited her

body shape, look, and the style of her wedding,

it was very evident that the CR4134 ticked all the

boxes. The reality of finding the perfect gown on

her first visit had taken her quite by surprise but

she trusted her instincts and my advice, and she

obviously knows when she’s onto a winner! I am

sure her husband will agree!

BORROWED&BLUE 107

Page 108: Borrowed and Blue Issue 2

Sarah's advice

• Best advice is to enjoy planning for your big day and that you don’t have to spend exorbitant amounts of money to create a stylish and memorable wedding.

• I personally wouldn’t scrimp on a photographer as they are able to capture that very special moment in time that you will be able to re live again and again.

• I found having a shorter time frame to plan for our wedding made me be more assertive with my decision making which was a positive .

• Have the groom try on his suit a few weeks before the wedding to ensure it still fits.

• Allow 6 months for getting your wedding dress!

Congratulations to our BRIDE AND GROOM MAGAZINE

WIN your wedding gown winner Rebecca!

Becky is marrying Matt on the 24th January 2015.

We know what gown Becky has chosen and while we won't be sharing it with you we can tell you Becky looks AMAZING!

We asked Becky to tell us all about Matt, the proposal and of course, all about the gown!

122 BORROWED&BLUE

Page 123: Borrowed and Blue Issue 2

THE PROPOSALIt was our first night in Sydney, before heading over to Bali for 2 weeks. We were going for dinner and Matt asked me to choose somewhere to go. I was tired and walked up and down not really making a decision and we finally settled on the first restaurant we passed down at Darling Harbour.

We sat down to have a drink before dinner, a song played in the background and Matt

started laughing,

I didn’t think anything of it, we then got seated for dinner, Matt went to the “toilet” came back and sat down. We started looking at the menus and I asked him what he fancied and proceeded to tell him that his menu that he was looking over was upside down and still thought nothing of this until the waiter came up behind me with 2 champagne glasses on a tray and asked if I was Becky. He handed me over a note and when I looked up Matt was down on one knee. I saw the ring and it was perfect. I, of course, said “yes.”

Later he told me the reason he laughed when we sat down was the song that came on had been Beyonce

“IF YOU LIKE IT, YOU BETTER PUT A RING ON IT”

“THE ONE"Matt and I have been together for 10 years. I had immigrated to New Zealand with my family in February 2004. We were renting a house in Torbay. One night we went out for a family dinner to the local Indian restaurant and Matt was in there with his friend Josh. We noticed each other and my Dad started making fun of me. The boys left the restaurant and a waitress came over to us and gave me a bit of paper. I opened it and it had Matt’s name with his mobile number on it. I texted him and that is when it all began; we have been inseparable ever since.

Matt is kind hearted, outgoing with a great personality, my best friend, my rock and my

soul mate, I would be lost without him.

We asked Becky how she felt when she won the Bride and Groom and Astra Bridal gown competition

Speechless!

I had been checking Facebook every day from when the competition closed. It was perfect really! Everything to do with the wedding was going well, the only thing I was stressing over was buying a gown. We didn’t have much money to spend which made trying them on really hard. I was tossing up whether to get one made but had heard horror stories about brides who had done this. I actually missed the call on the day. When they called back and said that they were from Bride and Groom magazine my heart jumped. I was in shock for the rest of the day. I am so thankful that I won! It was my first time winning a competition and for this to be it was pretty amazing.

ALL ABOUT THE CONSULTATION

I had two consultations with Penny at Astra Bridal Takapuna prior to winning the competition she was so lovely and helpful. Liz also knew that I was struggling with the cost of a gown and then I won the competition. I made my consultation and when I arrived the girls there were just lovely. I felt so special. I think I nearly tried on every dress in my size - it was such a wonderful experience.

"SUCH A LOVELY BRIDE"- Liz, Astral Bridal

“Penny loved helping Becky look for her dream gown. When we heard she had won the competition, Penny was so happy as she knew it meant that Becky could have the gown of her dreams. When Becky came in to make her decision she saw a gown on another bride and asked Penny if she too could try it on. As soon as she had that gown on she knew it was the gown for her. My bride was super excited also as she was in on the occasion and we all just had such a lovely experience.”

124 BORROWED&BLUE

Page 125: Borrowed and Blue Issue 2

THE PERFECT GOWN

I had an idea in my head of what I wanted but my ideal gown was out of my price range. I

had to re-think and tried on a couple of other options and both times I thought I had found

the “one” but still wasn’t sure. I went back with different family members both times who gave

different opinions, and I was getting pretty confused, Penny was great she was so helpful

especially as my mind wasn’t made up and I was getting confused with so many opinions

and then I won the competition. I ended going into Astra on my own and there was another bride in there at the same time who held up a dress and asked if I had tried it on before. I hadn’t as it was one out of my price range

but was actually my original idea of a dress I would love. I tried it on and that was it I knew

I had found the one finally. I felt like a bride finally - I can’t wait for it to arrive.

Thank you so much to the whole team at Astra Bridal Takapuna, but mostly

Liz for making my experience so special and Penny for being so patient, helpful,

and just amazing.

To Bride and Groom magazine, thank you for picking me. You have

taken away my only stress making my wedding planning that much easier and

special!

Cameron Diaz is a definite column figure. She is fairly straight through without a defined waist.

This gown is a shocker. The neckline is too wide so it emphases her shoulders. The skirt

is narrow so does nothing to balance her out. The waist is all baggy. Generally I can't

think of anything good to say about this.

This gown is much better as the bodice has structure so it gives Cameron some shape from

waist to shoulders. The wide skirt balances out the fact that she has wide shoulders.

The way the waist is seamed and with extra embellishments draws our eye there creating

a waist.

Kristen and Brad’s rustic themed wedding was in one word

AMAZING.

The proposalBoth Brad and I are involved in water ski racing. The most prestigious race every year is the Bridge to Bridge in Hamilton.

I was in Hamilton ready to timekeep the race on the return leg when Brad had an interview that was shown on

the big screen from the halfway point. After talking about the race he got

down on one knee (in his wetsuit) and proposed. I was standing with a bank full

of people watching the big screen. He then skied back and as he crossed the finish line he blew me kisses at 130Kph.

All about the dressKristen chose the

Maggie Sottero Symphony.

When I put the dress on for the first time I knew it was the one. It was a really good fit for me and felt right.

I really appreciated the effort that Dee and her team went to to source

the embellishments that I had seen on a different dress. It truly personalised the dress and was my favourite part of the dress.

6-12 monthsGown SelectionTime to start working with New Zealand’s most trusted bridal salon to make one of the biggest decisions (apart from the groom!). Some gowns take six months to arrive so to have the full salon selection don’t delay.Once you have made this decision you can advise all your wedding party of the colour scheme for their outfits. Your decision will influence the groom, the mothers and the bridesmaids. Your florist will also want to know details for the flower selection.

3-6 monthsFlowergirl Dress Don’t leave it too late limiting your selection, or too soon that she may grow out of it. A style with a sash can often accommodate growth between purchase and wearing.

Jacket or Belt Think about this accessory early, as it can take some time to find the perfect match.

3 monthsTime to get an idea of your complete head to toe look by making a booking in the salon to try on accessories.

Shoes If you order now they will have time to arrive, be worn a little, and then be ready for your first fitting. This is also the time to select a colour for dyeing. Shoes are essential for any gown fittings.

Handbag Will it match your shoes, or go for some bling, or both?

Jewellery Select any headpiece sooner rather than later, as your hairdresser will want to know about both your veil and jewellery for your hair trial.

Lingerie Have your lingerie fitted by one of Astra Bridal’s consultants who are trained in specific bridal undergarments.

Veil The one accessory that really says bride. To have a selection from the full range of edges and colours available, order now.

Flowergirl Accessories A special piece of jewellery will serve as a memento of the wedding day.

1 monthYou should have your first fitting scheduled and be able to have all your accessories together.
