ST JOHN BOSCO JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB 2014-15 SEASON

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2014-15 SEASON

The 2014-15 has been and gone in the blink of an eye. It hardly seems real that we have competed and completed in yet another year of the red ball game, and we are but a breath away from the start of another season.

I will start my report this year, unlike previously, by firstly thanking our Committee, our Coaches and Managers and our Sponsors. I feel without this core group of individuals (acting as a collective) we would not be able to function as the wonderful that we, St John Bosco Cricket Club, really are.

To the new members of our Committee this season, thank you for your efforts, they were much needed and much appreciated. We certainly hope that you will continue on the Committee in years to come, as the influx of new blood and new ideas is what keeps the energy and enthusiasm levels of all Clubs up and necessary.

To our tried and true Executive, you are fantastic. The behind the scenes work that you do is just great. Everything from regos through to gear, meetings, assocn liaison, sausage sizzles and net and pitch maintenance, raffles and everything else. It doesn’t go unnoticed.. thank you all so, so much.

Coaches and Managers, stand up and take a bow. This season we had a huge majority of first time Coaches and Managers and we also had a very very successful season. Coming into the last round of the season, I think we only had 1 team that was not still statistically in contention to make the finals. It was a wonderful effort by all involved. Our under 8 Coaches & Managers, who incidentally, were handed the envious job of beginning to mould the future of Australian cricket, I thank you immensely for your time and patience in giving these great bunch of kids a huge start towards a long and enjoyable involvement in their sporting life.

And finally, a huge thankyou to our Sponsors, who put their hard earned into the Club so that your kids can play and train with the best equipment and facilities. Without these benefactors, Clubs cannot afford to run, no matter how much external fund raising we do, we truly need them. If you are or know somebody who may wish to get on board as a Sponsor , in any fashion, don’t be backward in coming forward. Let us know and we can chase them up. Please support our Sponsors where you can, as they have been supporting us for years and will hopefully continue to do so for years to come.

Now for the season as it was.We had 10 Junior teams and 2 Mens teams playing for Bosco this year. 8 of the 10 Junior teams played competitive cricket, with our 2 under 8 teams in a non-competitive form of the game. (although according to the reports I got on Monday mornings form the U8 kids, I thought we had 2 U8 sides vying for the cricket World Cup every weekend. I love their passion.)

We 3 teams make the finals, our 10Ds, our 14Cs and our 16Cs. Our 16s ran out winners, and both the 14s and 10s came within an ace of winning their respective games. The 10s losing on the last ball of the game and the 14s a sniff away also.

Special mention to Liam McMahon in the 16s. We rolled the opposition for 47 of which Liam took 7-2 including a hat-trick. 6 bowled and 1 LBW. Fairly good effort that.

Mentioning the level of success of the Club, I’ll just run off a few quick stats. We had 31 players hit scores of 25 or more (many multiple times), high score of the year was Liam MCcMahon 129. We had 21 players take 10 wickets or more. 3 players taking 18 wickets..Tom Bryant, Cameron Cullen and Jonah Smithson. 7 players took 5 or more catches in the field, with Joe Gair bagging 8.

ST JOHN BOSCO JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB 2014-15 SEASON

We had numerous run-out exponents, with Dominic Roche and John Issa leading the charge with 4 each. Our wicket keepers were outstanding again this season, Caleb Newton holding 6 catches and Taylor Symonds leading the stumpings with3. So as you can see by a quick statistic flick, our kids were good...very good in fact, and I am sure they will continue to improve next season.

It would be remiss of me not to mention 1 of my favourite ever sporting teams, our 14C’s. If you recall last season, I stood at the presentation and said that this side had toiled for the last few years, always playing short but never complaining or making excuses. This team had won only 1 game in 2 years, but had displayed so much mateship and sportsmanship, it was hard not to admire this great bunch of kids.

Well this year, that team of enthusiastic young men made the finals. They played with a full team, but they still played with the same mateship and enthusiasm that kept them together for the past few tough seasons. The fairy tale win in the finals was not to be, but true to their form, 30 minutes after the game you couldn’t tell if they had won or lost. They just love the game and as I said, because of the way they conduct themselves, win, lose or draw, they are 1 of my favourite ever sporting teams. They are a credit to themselves, their parents and the Club. I hope all of our teams can follow suit and mirror the efforts of the 14Cs, on and off the field.

Statistics can be read and manipulated to say what you like, however, when they are there in front of you and they simply say that the stats on show are the best in the Association and Club for that grade, you can’t argue against them. This year we had quite a few Club and Grade records set.

In the under 16Cs Liam McMahon set a Club & Association record for the aggregate number of runs scored and average (373 at an average of 53.29).

John Tsoukarellis in the 12Es gained the Club & Association record for the number of runs scored with 183. Showing his versatility, John also took out the Association bowling average with 11 wickets @ 5.27.

Not to be outdone, John’s brother Anthony shared the Club record for the number of wickets taken also with 11 wickets. A great family double ( I wonder if Steve & Mark Waugh started this way)

The 10Bs also produced some records with Mark McNaughton producing a Club record with 149 runs @ an average of 21.29. Cooper Sullivan’s effort of 17 wickets @ 4.35 was both a Club & Association record for aggregate and average.

And finally, Jonah Smithson & Cameron Cullen of the 10Ds achieved & shared Club records for bowling aggregate, taking 18 wickets each. They make great reading, don’t they?

We also have a number of our players that are on the verge of huge milestones. We have 7 players who have scored more than 500 runs. Liam McMahon leads the charge with 1335, followed by Josh Quinn on 861, Ryan Forrest 736, Patrick Cordina 724, Jonah Herrmann 717, Luke Mecham 658 and Jayden Cauduro 597. Most of these players can conceivably reach the 1000 runs in the next year or two. A great effort.

In the bowling stakes we also have 4 current players who have taken 50 wickets or more. In order... Liam McMahon 97 wickets, Jonah Herrmann 72, Andrew Nicoll 69 and Jayden Cauduro 67.

As you can see, the Club has quality and ability and the above-mentioned players have given all players in the Club something to aim for and aspire to. And the wonderful thing about all of

ST JOHN BOSCO JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB 2014-15 SEASON

these young players, is the fact that they really are wonderful young people as well as being talented sportsmen. Great kids performing great feats, well done all.

This year our Men’s ranks were reduced to a mere 2 sides. These teams were a mixture of youth and experience and the young lions were thrown into the deep end, being graded B2s. The older, wiser heads again said they were over-graded, being allotted B4 status. History dictates that neither side made the finals but both put up credible showings for the year.

We did have something to crow about, with Rory Rowe scoring the Club’s only century in the Men’s division. Our bowlers faired a little better with 4 bowlers taking 5 or more wickets. Liam Hamling (must be the name Liam) leading with 6 for 27, Andrew Fenn 5-24, Patrick Eades 5-33 and Paul Barclay 5-42.

We have 8 current Men players who have been playing with the Club for more than 15 years. Luke Baker 21 years, Martin Dantas 20 years and Mitch Worsley 19 years are the most noteworthy. This is a magnificent display of Club loyalty and longevity.

Not every player is going to score thousands of runs or take hundreds of wickets, but if they play the game to the best of their ability in the manner of sportsmanship that it should be played, and enjoy themselves, they will have completed a very worthwhile career and contributed to the enjoyment of the mates they play with.

To every player who represented St John Bosco Cricket Club this season, congratulations and thank you for your wonderful efforts this year. Hopefully you will all return next season and help grow the Club into an even better sporting group. Thanks to the parents for their continuing support of their kids, getting them to training and the games.

Let’s look forward to a bigger and better 2015-16 season. Yours on a sticky wicket....finally.Mark Piper - President of the best Club in the Shire

SECRETARY’S REPORT 2014-15

The 2014-15 season saw a rewarding increase in registrations to 103 junior players but this was offset by the drop in mens registrations. We had 2 U8 and 3 U10s but we had the flow on benefit to the older age groups from previous years. We dropped to only 2 mens teams however which was disappointing.

We should increase again hopefully next year as all U16s will be returning and other age groups will get the flow on. Our incentives to new players and U8s did help increase our registration numbers but when the money runs out so might the registrations.

We do however need your assistance in spreading the word and ensuring as many people as possible are aware of the great facilities we have. We will be approaching both associations and Cricket NSW with a view to getting people in our nets and hopefully providing some coaching offshoots for us to latch onto.

We outperformed most of the other clubs for retention We will need to give discounted registrations a serious review for next season depending on finances and fund raising..

Our men’s registrations were also a disappointment this year with another team going with only 2 taking the field. Not sure what the reason is here but the Association may need to consider more one day games and possibly a 20/20 comp.

ST JOHN BOSCO JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB 2014-15 SEASON

We need to see more of the parents having a go here so if you can still hold a bat put your name forward (even as a casual player). We had 2 teams this year with only 36 registered players, another decline on last year.

There are some interesting stats on our player retention here with overall 24% of our juniors going on to play mens since 1994 but in this years mens teams there are 65% who have played juniors. This ratio has been steadily increasing and if we get back to the 5 or 6 teams we have had in the past it will get even better.

The player retention report below is also very interesting reading with Bosco above average in all areas over the last 10 years except U8 but even there only just below the average. Overall we are in the top 3 for the best retention rate of any club during this period. Up until the last 2 years we were above 80%.That’s where we want to be and hopefully with the continuation of the influx of U8s we can get back to the big numbers of the mid 2000’s.

There are also 43 players with 10 or more years playing service in juniors and mens combined with 20 of them still playing and racking up the years. Congratulations to Luke Baker 21 years and Martin Dantas 20 years.

CLUB PLAYER STATS

We at St John Bosco cricket club are endeavouring to compile all the records relating to officials, volunteers and player statistics for past years. We have a fairly good data base for years from 1995 onwards but are lacking some information for years prior to that and some player statistics for the years 1995 to 2001. If you have any information hidden away in your cupboard such as old scorebooks or keep in touch with past volunteers please pass on the message. Anyone who finds any errors in the club statistics can they please contact the Secretary.

Gathering of the data allows us to provide some very good historical information about the club, some of which we are starting to collate and have included in this report.

SPONSORSHIP

A general thank you to all our sponsors for 2014-15 season as without you we would not be able to meet our cost commitments.. Our wholehearted thanks go out to them and may they support us for years to come. So get behind them for the good of our club.

Many years ago sponsorship was unheard of at our club but gradually over the last few years we would never have met the rising costs of running the club without the involvement of sponsors. It is hard for a club such as ours with limited membership and playing numbers to offer our sponsors a great deal for their money. We only ask that you the parents and the heart of our club support our sponsors wherever possible. The funds provided by sponsors are used to renew kits and equipment, as well as ensure the upkeep of training facilities and pitches at Boys Town Oval.

A club can’t run effectively without sponsorship and we are no different to any other club. The Sponsor’s dollars go to renewing the kits and equipment that is necessary to give your kids the best opportunity to play and train for cricket. So I offer our Sponsors a sincere thank you

JUNIOR SEASON REPORTS 2014-15

Under 16C Season Report

What an amazing year was had by this fabulous bunch of young cricketers. We played the year with only 10 registered players. We played the first 7 rounds with anywhere between 7 to 9 players as James broke his foot and was out until after Christmas.

Our aim for the season was to enjoy ourselves, win as many games as we can and hopefully make the final. Our report card for the season was: enjoyed ourselves, won the majority of our games, finished the season as minor premiers, played our second consecutive final and more importantly were premiers for the second year in a row.

There was one major theme demonstrated throughout the season and that was teamwork. The boys played 11 games as a team. They supported each other, celebrated the team’s and each other successes and tolerated each others mistakes.

There were numerous memorable moments throughout the year with the majority of the boys achieving either their highest scores and/or their best bowling figures. Two performances in the final deserve a special mention: Dom batting in the final where he opened the batting and lasted 18 overs to settle our innings down as we were 3 for 3 off 4 overs and Liam bowling of 8.2 overs 7 maidens 7 for 2 (including a hattrick).

I would like to say a big thankyou to 3 guys who were of great assistance to me and the team throughout the year. Col, Val and Gonz were at every training session, Col and Gonz helped me umpire at the games and Val scored each week. Their assistance at training was instrumental in the boys success this year. We were able to provide one on one coaching to the boys with their batting and bowling.

Finally I would like to say how proud I was to be their coach and friend this year. I learnt a lot from them during the year, they learnt a lot from each other and hopefully they picked up a few tips from me.

Jayden Cauduro – Jayden developed into a very good opening batsmen during the year. As Jayden’s confidence in his ability grows he will score a lot more runs. Jayden is a good medium pace bowler and a very handy fieldsman with a safe pair of hands. Jayden score a solid 50 in round 5.

James Hankins – unfortunately James only played with us after Christmas due to a broken foot. James developed into an outstanding wicket keeper and his batting improved from last season.

ST JOHN BOSCO JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB 2014-15 SEASON

Jonah Herrmann – Jonah continues to develop into a fine all-rounder. Jonah is a confidence batsman and when his confidence is up he is very difficult to get out. Jonah is also a fine bowler who continually bowls at the stumps. Jonah also has a safe pair of hands.

Dominic Jacome – Dom is fighter who is always prepared to open the batting and is one of the players who is prepared to get in behind the ball. Dom has developed into a handy medium pace outswing bowler who will as he grows pick up many wickets.

Liam McMahon – Liam continues to grow into an outstanding young cricketer. Liam scored his first century this year and I am sure many more will follow. Liam was the fastest and unluckiest bowlers in the competition. When he attacks the stumps wickets follow as was evidenced in the final. Liam was also one of the best fielders in the competition. Liam captaincy skill also developed during the year.

Declan Moroney - The new boy to the team. During the season Declan’s medium paced swing bowling developed and he was unlucky not to bag more wickets than he did. Declan’s batting also developed and he will score more runs as his strength develops.

Andrew Nicoll – Andrew continues to develop his all-around cricket ability. Andrew is a handy medium fast left arm bowler who continually attacks the stumps. Andrew has also developed into a handy top order batsman who is capable of scoring runs quickly.

Josh Quinn – Josh’s captain qualities excelled this year. Josh managed to keep wickets and co -captain with Liam. His ability to read the game and rotate the bowlers showed maturity. Josh continued to score runs at a rapid pace. Who can forget Josh’s decision to retire on 63 in the game to remember Phil Hughes.

Matthew Reid – Matt’s bowling improved this season. Matt developed into a medium pace bowler who was able to continuously attack the stumps which resulted in some very good bowling performances at the end of the season. Matt’s batting is capable of scoring runs at a very fast rate.

Matthew Thomas – Matt developed into a good left arm orthodox spinner and when he pitched the ball up was capable of taking wickets as he did in the last couple of games . Matt’s batting also improved during the year. Matt’s wicket keeping also developed as the year progressed.

A big thankyou from the team to Harrison Giffen and Matthew McNaughton for helping us out in the final.

I am looking forward to coaching again if the boys will have me to make it 3 premierships in a row.

Under 14C Yearly Report Card 2014/15

Grand Finalists for 1014-15. Who would have thought? After many lean years without a game win, the boys played well enough to make the grand final after winning 7 of their 10 games. And what a game, the final went down the last couple of overs and late into the afternoon. Unfortunately we lost a close one after previously beating the minor premiers St Patricks in Round 9.

The boys can all hold their collective heads high after such an improved season. Persistence payed off with training drills and skills improved in all facets of the game. The main group of

boys have been together for a few seasons now and the improvement in bowling, batting and fielding has been exceptional and continues to improve. They are an enthusiastic bunch who never stopped trying all year and playing the game in good spirit.

I’d like to show my appreciation to our Manager, Anthony Cordina for his assistance again this season. He puts his hand up each year to help the coaching and managing of the boys.

To all the parents for having a go at scoring, thanks. It’s a great load off your shoulders when you know someone is taking the scorers role on. This year we had involvement from all parents and this allowed for Anthony and I to concentrate on the cricket. Thanks also to the SJBCC Committee for their support and commitment shown to all age groups and advice in all matters concerning cricket.

Patrick CordinaA handy 50 n.o v Cronulla Caringbah Round 3, 70 n.o V St Patricks in Round 9 to set up the upset against the minor premiers, and anchored a number of innings through the year to easily qualify as our best batsmen. His spin bowling also contributed to the Round 9 upset against St Patricks. Another award winning year from co-captain Pat. Well done mate.

Isaac CornelisseFollowed on from his previous good season and Coaches/Most improved award from last year. Took three cracking catches one after the other to secure the upset win of the season V St Patricks in Round 9. Great season Isacc.

Taylor SymondsA good year with both the bat and keeping. Set up a number of stumpings including an important one for the team v St Patricks in the second round. Tay is working towards a batsman/keeper role in any future team. A handy 55 in round 10 with 28 runs in the grand final also.

Tom BryantWhat a season Tom. Started the year on fire with a five for (5/3) against Illawong Menai Round 1 and a 6/7 later in the season. Handy with the bat and one of our most enthusiastic fielders. Tom’s a positive influence in the team and communicates well with all team members.

Elliot WaughHis best year yet. Developed some good pace in his bowling and he picked up some great wickets including the last ball of the day in Round 3 taking out Cronulla Caringbah best batsman and setting the team up for win number 3 for the season. Handy with the bat and shows exceptional leadership in the team always a positive influence on his team mates.

Addison HealyAds had a great year. One of the fastest, most accurate and strongest throwers in the game, he caught many a batsmen short out of his crease and Taylor can thank Ads for some of his stumpings also. Improving every season

David CookeCookie had a great year with the team and shared the keeping role with Taylor and is showing improvement with each season. Dave is looking at the batsmen/keeper role in future after some great starts with the bat.

Ryan ForrestAnother great season for Ryan. Proves handy with both the bat and bowling and made some significant scores throughout the year as both an opener or further down the order. Handy

fieldsman with some lightning catches at mid off. A highest score of 39 with a 20 in the grand final.

Aiden FryPud has also had a big year in his second season with the side. Both his batting and bowling improved significantly this year he was unlucky to be pipped by Jack for the most improved/coaches award after taking 9 wickets for the season and making a few runs also.

Jack CaryDefinitely the most improved player for 2014-15. A critical number of wickets came his way through persistence and hard work. Jack made a handy 13 n.o with the bat against St Patricks which collectively helped the total against the minor premiers and set up a good win. Well deserved winner of the 2015 Coaches Award for the U/14’s.

Jarrod McCreaAnother big year for Jarrod. He was handy with the bat on a number of games with a 36 n.o. and 19 n.o. during the season. Jarrod has been training hard with his bowling and improving each season. Another positive influence on all his team mates, his fielding is exceptional.

Bosco Cricket 14D End Of Season 2014/15 Report

Our 14D boys come together this year with a number new players and a number of returning players. All but one of our boys started the season as either age 11 and the others just turned 12. We were a very young and in experience team playing in a U14 competition where 3 of the teams were very close in ability and the other 2 teams were miles ahead of us.

Coach Michael was voted the coach and I took on the managers job. Craig stepped up to score again this year and off we went. Our first training session was interesting as a number of players had not bowled or batted before with the red leather ball. The coaching staff were faced with a huge job to get the boys ready for round 1. In the words of the great man Mr Mark Piper we encourage the boys to focus on their own personal mile stones and just concentrate on improving each week. I must say how proud we were of all the boys efforts at training. We had excellent attendance at training each week and the boys were very well behaved and focused.

We kicked off the season with a shaky start where we were rolled then punished in the field. We looked to be going down outright. Then in the second week of the first game we played with determination to not allow our opposition an outright win. This determination and never quit attitude is what we will remember most about our 14D team for the 2014/15 season. From this point on each week we competed strongly and eventually after a few games we had our first win.

The most pleasing thing to watch with our 14D team was to see them grow and become best of mates and good friends. Most of the boys had met for the first time. Once again with organised sport there are friendships that have been made for life. I am sure that all the boys and parents will stop and have a chat as they run into each other in the years to come and talk about the cricket season that could have been.

Cathal Brady : This was Cathal first season of cricket. Cathal initially struggled with his bowling and batting. Cathal was very determined and work hard on his game where in his first game back from the Christmas break Cathal was a different player. I was in shock to how far his game had come on. Cathal was bowling off a long run with pace, line and a good

length. Cathal was rewarded with a number of wickets. When come to batting Cathal was always the first one to put his hand up to lead the team out to bat.

Liam Callahan: Liam has a lot of potential as a cricketer. Liam was best known for his batting. Liam was able to hold up an end and bat for a long periods of the game after a batting collapse. Liam needs to keep working hard in the off season on his bowling to improve his all round game. Liam is a great team player. Nothing was ever a problem for Liam he would always follow the coaches instructions. Well done on a good season Liam. Keep playing the game.

Jayden Davidson: This was Jayden first year. Jayden coming from a famous cricketing family had just woken up to the fact that his was born to play cricket. Jayden started out struggling with his bowling and batting. Jayden was determined and applied himself by working hard on his game to become a very sound batsmen and now can bowl straight. Jayden had some great innings with the bat and was often called upon to hold up an end. Keep playing the game Jayden.

Harrison Giffen : This was Harrison first year of competition cricket. Harrison showed a lot of promise and being the oldest was appointed captain of our team. Harrison had a strong season and become a very good leader. In our last game Harrison had the opportunity to step up and play in our U16 team in the last round as they required an 11th player for the finals. Harrison insisted in playing in our last round game. This was a wonderful sign of respect for his 14D team mates helping them get through a tough last game. Harrison is a good developing cricketer, has a good mind for the game and in time with more playing experience will develop into a very good cricketer. Harrison was good with both bat and ball. Harrison is also a very good fielder.

Jayden Howell: Jayden is a player with a heap of natural talent. Jayden is one of those players when he takes the field we are all hoping he gets it right. On his day Jayden has the ability of winning the game on the back of his own performance. Jayden had some great games at wicket keeper and played a few great innings with the bat. Jayden has a relaxed approach to the game and does not get flustered when things don’t go to plan.

George Issa: George is a great young man and with a lot of potential as a cricketer. George is best known for his accurate quick bowling. George is a very determined batsman and is very fast between the wickets. George should keep working hard on his all round game and he will develop into a fine player. George should stick with playing the game of cricket as we know he loves the game. Keep playing the game George.

Ethan James: Ethan loves the challenge of the game and worked very hard with dad on his batting determined to get a big score. With each game Ethan’s all round game improved. Ethan’s bowling was excellent this year. Ethan has an economical run up and get’s through the crease at pace. Ethan has a great work ethic and attitude to develop and I am sure will develop into a very good cricketer. Keep up the hard work Ethan.

Nicholas Lainson: Nick had a good season but struggle to wake up at times. Nick took on the role of wicket keeper this year and did a good job. When not wicket keeping Nick’s bowling improved and Nick developed into one of our go to bowlers to break a partnership. Nick is very quick in the field and running between wickets. Thanks for wicket keeping each week Nick.

Matthew McNaughton: Matthew had a very good season. Matthew when called upon stood up and lead the way with Bat and Ball. Matthew is a left arm bowler with a lot of natural ability with the ball. Through the months of November and December Matthew was in great form with the bat knocking up consist scores each game. His best inning was his 54 where he

played some great shots. Matt also got a 5 wicket hall with the ball. Following the Christmas break Matthew struggled to recapture that 2014 form.

Zane Piggott: Zane was the team’s top scorer with the bat again this year. When Zane gets it right look out the ball his flying all over the park. Zane best innings was against St Pat where he smashed the best side in the comp bowling all over the park. Unfortunately Zane was a little inconsistent. Zane bowling was excellent this year. Zane is a very good fielder. Keep having a go Zane and remember to back yourself.

Samuel Tompson: Sam had a great season with the bat. Sam fell just short of some big scores but he was one of our most consistent with the bat. Sam is a player with a lot of potential with an all round game and is like lightning in the field. Sam could have played under 12’s this year but chose to stick with the boys. Sam best is yet to come. Stick with the game Sam.

Closing

I would like to thank all the parents for getting the boys to training, the games and investing in their playing equipment. I could see you all enjoyed watching the boys play each week. Once again thanks to Michael for coaching, Craig for scoring and the Bosco cricket club for looking after our team.

We would like to thank the Bosco Cricket Club Committee on behalf of our 14D team for putting the players on the park, providing efficient communication and a Newsletter throughout the season.

It was a pleasure to manage the team. Stuart McNaughton

12C End of year report

Well what a season for the Bosco 12C’s. We were very lucky to retain the majority of the players from the 10B side from the previous year (finalists) with the welcome addition of our new players; Pat Leate, Jake Mellor, Caleb Newton & Joey Gair.

It was a shaky start to the season with only the 1 win from our first 5 matches. However, there were some positive signs and we were extremely unlucky to lose 2 of these matches. Everything started to come together in the 2nd half of the season where we won 3 out of our last 5 matches. It was especially satisfying to comprehensively beat the very good Como team who had beaten us in the final last year.

We equally shared the bowling overs between all of the players in the 2nd half of the year and this made a difference for us. I can honestly say that every single player contributed with the ball and we were the best bowling side in the grade. Our fielding also improved immensely in the 2nd half which was very pleasing.

We ended up finishing 3rd in the grade and with a little more luck in 3 of our games we would have made the finals once again. Well done boys, you should all be very proud of yourselves. I’d like to thank Pete Leate for being our fantastic manager this year. He was always on the ball with team communication and was always very encouraging of the players. Also thanks to Pete Leate, Michael Mecham and Matt Newton for doing a great job with the scoring. Thanks to Craig for being a great help on training nights and to the other mum’s and dad’s for helping out.

ST JOHN BOSCO JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB 2014-15 SEASON

I thank you all for the opportunity to let me coach again this year. They are a great group of boys who were always respectful and played for each other as a team.

Bosco 12C line-up (alphabetical order):

Ben BruckardBen’s bowling improved dramatically during the 2nd half of the season thanks to a determined effort to improve his bowling accuracy. He became one of our most consistent bowlers as a result. He also showed a lot of improvement with the bat towards the end of the season. He is a real delight to have in the team, on and off the field.

Joseph GairThis was Joey’s first year of competition cricket. He showed an abundance of natural talent and a willingness to learn and improve. Fantastic fielding throughout the season, some great batting performances as well and his bowling towards the end of season was top class.

Joel HalesJoel’s batting technique really improved throughout the season due to a determined effort from him to improve. He had a couple of really good innings with the bat. He showed us what a difficult bowler he is to face throughout the 2nd half of the season. Some great saves in the field throughout the year.

Kyan Holder Kyan showed a great batting improvement towards the end of the season and smashed the ball around the park on our last game. Kyan’s bowling was outstanding for us this year. As one of our strike bowler’s, he was given the opportunity to bowl in difficult periods throughout the season and he always handled the pressure very well. Fantastic line and length bowling with good pace.

Patrick LeateFantastic left arm bowler. As one of our strike bowler’s, Pat was always able to deliver when we needed him to; by restricting the batsmen’s scoring and getting wickets. Pat’s fielding improved dramatically in the 2nd half of the season and he was always solid with the bat when the team needed it.

Hayden LindsayHayden’s batting improved dramatically this year with some very mature performances throughout the season. Thanks to a couple of half centuries, Hayden achieved a batting average of 40 which has earned him the team batting award this year. Showed great maturity as vice-captain and again handled the pressure as one of our strike bowler’s very well.

Luke MechamLuke retained the title as our ‘master-blaster’ with some solid hitting throughout the year. He scored an excellent 80 not-out against St. Pats. He showed great maturity as our captain this year and improved his bowling dramatically which has earned him the team bowling award.

Jake MellorJake showed what a courageous and determined batsmen he was on many occasions throughout the season. He opened our batting many times and was always consistent at getting us off to a solid start. Jake’s willingness to learn during training sessions was always pleasing. His deceptive bowling was a huge advantage for us this year.

Luke Morris

Luke is a very accurate and consistent bowler who can always be relied upon when we needed to restrict the opposition’s runs. He took some great catches in the field this year and showed some excellent batting technique throughout the season.

Caleb NewtonCaleb was our dedicated wicket keeper throughout the season. He was easily the best keeper in the grade and enabled us to be the only team not to have to rely on a backstop. This was a huge advantage for the team. Caleb took some great catches and run-outs/stumpings throughout the year. He also showed us his ability with the bat on many occasions.

Lachlan NicollLachie was again one of our most consistent bowler’s. He can always be relied upon to take a wicket or a catch when we needed it. A very courageous fielder who would always put his body on the line to save runs for the team.

Coach Mark

Under 12E: Season report 2014/15

Marion and I were unsure what to expect when we took on the role of coach and manager for the under 12E this year. But we can both say the entire year was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and this was due to the great bunch of players and their families.

In the lead up to the season I met the team, which consisted of five player who had played in previous seasons, and five kids who were playing for the first time. Given the bowling skills of Mathew, John and Anthony in the team, my biggest concern was trying not to have anyone suffer a serious injury at training before the season even commenced. As luck would have it I stumbled across Darcy and his dad in the nets one afternoon and by week two we had our 11th player.

We started the year slowly struggling to compete on the Saturday’s due to the steep learning curve for our new kids. However there was a noticeable team spirit developing at training as the more experienced kids showed the new ones a few tricks and everyone started to become good friends.

I was amazed at how often nearly the entire team showed up to training and how keen everyone was to have a good time, and learn some cricket skills as well. Darcy brought his Grandad (Alan) to training one week, and it turned out Al was a very talented cricket coach who was happy to come and give me some guidance for the first few weeks. Given my lack of experience this was a fantastic help.

Towards the end of 2014 the kids commitment to their training and with ever improving skills started to turn the corner with their competitiveness on the Saturdays. By the fifth game we had our first win on the board. For the next three straight games we went from strength to strength and didn’t just win, we won so well, we had two chances at outright.

We finished the season playing Illawong, the same team that we played in round one, and the team that ended the season 2nd. The last game of the year went down to the wire and ended with us losing by a couple of runs, but more importantly we competed for the entire 2 weeks and looked like an all round great little team of cricketers.

You should all be very proud of yourselves for what you achieved on the cricket field and the fact that each of you played to the best of your ability and in the best possible spirit of the game. Nothing but kids doing their best and encouraging each other. Well done.

ST JOHN BOSCO JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB 2014-15 SEASON

A special thanks to Jason for scoring every week and making sure I never had to attempt to understand that book. We also can’t forget the two Minnie cricketers we relied on nearly every week to help in the field Ben and Ben. Both boys could easily play in the 12’s and be very competitive.

Michael D: A competitive cricketer and natural leader. Great skills with the bat and a more than handy bowler. One of the kids who really helped out the newer players. Loves his cricket.

Steve C: Another of the experienced kids who really took on a leaders role in the team. Steve is a natural wicket keeper with absolutely no fear. His batting average this year was massive.

Darcy H: The kid that was just smashing balls in the nets with his dad and fell into our team. Darcy has one benefit that no-one else in the team had, his grandad can coach cricket. Darcy has natural speed and balance and was keen to train and keen to learn. As a result his skills were developing at a very high rate, but unfortunately a broken hand at Christmas time cut his season in half. Hopefully 2015/16 will allow him to reach his clearly high potential.

Kye F: Genetically gifted, comes from great parents. Kye’s first year at cricket was an all round good experience. His bowling abilities really improved in the second half of the season. He can hit a very nice ball, and his running between the wickets really improved. Shows great potential for next year..

John T: A natural cricketer, bats like Dave WARNER, bowls like Brett LEE. Somehow manages to be the most polite and friendly boy I have ever met.

Anthony T: Could almost be related to John, he bats like Michael CLARK and bowls like Mitchell STARC. Would finish in a dead heat in the race for the friendly/ most polite person of all time.

Mathew A: If not for the T brothers Matty would have been the absolute stand out bowler in this team. A handy left hand batsman who has a fantastic attitude toward his teammates and his cricket. Bowled some amazing spells and his wicket tally nearly always out-numbered the runs scored. Hayden: One of the real team men. Always the centre of the fun at training and game day. For a first year player, showed brilliant skills toward the end of the year. The only player to smash a 6 all year, and took 3 wickets in his last game. A very promising young cricketer.

Max: The kid who tried to learn something new every week. He listens to the coach, he listened to his dad, he watches the cricket and he tries to put all that into action every Saturday. His bowling improved massively throughout the year and will be a very good little cricketer if he keeps going the way he is.

Harry: Harry turned up to every available Saturday and did exactly what he was asked to do, by his teammates or the coach. Harry is a guy that will give his best at every task. He was a great member of the team and I hope he continues with his cricket next year. His bowling improved out of sight, through his own hard work.

Gabby J: Gabby was the rose between ten thorns. She turned up to training battered and bruised nearly every week from her kickboxing classes, although she called them Irish dancing but I am not convinced. Gabby was just as fearless as Steve Cook, she spent the first three games getting hit on the hip until she got out of the baseball stance and started to

use the bat to fend the ball off. As a result of her commitment to training she ended the year as one of our most reliable fielders and a very handy bowler. An absolute joy to coach.

10B - 2014 /15 END OF YEAR REPORT

It was a season of what should have been, could have been. We should have been playing in the final and I have no doubt if we got there we would have gone close to winning. This group of boys toughed it out all year playing short, and at times having only 6 players on the field. Despite this we finished in third position and missed the final by 1 point which was extremely disappointing given our last game we had to win and only had 8 players and it really hurt us. We lost in the last over of the game and looked like winning all game, however, with only 8 fielders there were just too many gaps in the field and the boys were exhausted chasing the ball all day. There were a lot of teary boys at the end of the game and I was so proud of this bunch of boys. The effort they put in was first class, tough, determined and all boys in the team rose to occasion. I know all of the parents at the end of the game where so proud of the boys and they can all hold their heads up high with the effort they put in.

The kids in this team are some of the most competitive and determined I have seen. They played short all year and never complained once. They competed on every ball and never gave an inch. They won a few tough games that we probably should not have won, being short 2 and 3 players, but won purely on toughing it out and not giving in. We were easily the 2nd best team in the competition and had the best team, Engadine, on the rack in our final game but as stated previously missing players killed our cause.

Each and every boy in the team contributed to our success through the year and the most pleasing thing was seeing the boys improve dramatically throughout the year. I think there are some very talented cricketers amongst the group and most importantly almost all of them have that will to win and not give in. The boys love their cricket and it shows on the field and all the boys get on with each other.

A big thanks to John Roche for the free comedy routines every Saturday, managing the domestics on the side line, making sure the boys had their boxes in and the correct shoes on the correct feet. John made life a little easier for everyone and the boys and I loved having him around the team. Not to mention the parents also loved having him there for a cuddle. Thanks for all your help with the boys, we all really appreciate it and thank your efforts.

Another big thanks to Mel McNaughton. Mel was the custodian of the score book and keeping us updated on how we were tracking through each game and making sure our opponents were crossing the T’s and dotting the I’s. Mel did a first club job of the scoring, getting the scores in early every week without error and not complaining about what can be a thank less job. Thanks very much Mel.

Cameron JamesCameron loves his cricket and was the team’s enforcer with the bat. Warms up by eating cricket balls on Saturday morning and going three rounds with the old man in the backyard. I loved watching Cam bat as he makes watching an under 10’s game much more exciting, smashing the ball to boundary and over the fence. Never complains about what you ask him to do and absolutely loves smashing the ball. He times the ball beautifully for a young bloke and smashed 2 sixes and a heap of 4’s this year when Dad decided to buy him a new bat and retire the bat Don Bradman used.

ST JOHN BOSCO JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB 2014-15 SEASON

Cameron opened the batting for us all year and got us off to a good start almost every time. He changed the game a couple of times by simply scoring his runs quickly and hitting sixes and fours and putting the other team’s bowlers off their game. Really handy with the ball and took a few key wickets for us through the year. His bowling improved out of site throughout the year and has really good pace with the ball. Look forward to seeing him back next year.

Mark McnaughtonMark absolutely loves his cricket, hates getting out and is extremely talented with the bat and ball. Opened the batting all year for us and won the teams batting award. Knocked out a heap of runs for us with a few 25 not outs throughout the year. Got us off to a great start with the bat almost every game we played in a scored all his runs quickly. Has a great batting technique and shot range and lead with the bat all year.

Developed a good batting partnership with Cam that was really effective all year for us. Got us out of trouble a few times with the bat by bathing through almost the whole innings. Very handy with the ball also and finished up runner up with most number of wickets for the team. Took some really handy wickets through the year that set us up for a win when things looked tough. Has a great set of hands and a really good arm and took a couple of nice catches through the year.

Aiden RiderAiden is super competitive and competes for every ball and talks well on the field. Swims about 4km on a Saturday morning at 5am just too warm up for the game. Probably one of the most competitive in the team. The team’s wicket keeper and does a first class job behind the stump for a young bloke. Took some great catches through the year and really helped us getting sides out with run outs and his glove work.

Started the year on fire knocking out 25 not out with the bat. Works hard on his batting, scores his run quickly and really made some handy runs for us through the year and really knocked out a couple of good innings for us when games were tight. Aiden’s bowling improved towards the end of the season which was pleasing to see the Aiden back. Took valuable wickets for us at times and bowled with good pace. Will only get better with time.

Dominic RocheDom, together with Johnny Issa was probably the team’s best fielders. Took some super catches that 10 year old boys should not have caught. Bit like his old man catching things he shouldn’t have caught when he was younger. He has a super arm and ran out countless batsman with his sharp and accurate throwing. Opened the bowling all year with Cooper and bowled with good pace and length. He should have taken a lot more wickets and just bowled without luck, missing the stumps weekly by millimetres and certainly deserved more than the 4 wickets he took for the year.

Has a great batting technique and scored us handy runs at valuable times throughout the year. Dom is going to be a cricketer that one day it will all just click into place and he will have a breakout year. He just needs to keep trying and concentrate for the whole game whilst batting and the runs will come in buckets. Make sure you are back next year Dom, it could be your year.

Ben DavisonBHP - The quiet achiever. Ben was a bit of a surprise packet. Just chipped away all year with the bat and snuck up on everyone to take the team’s batsman of the year. Scored a heap of runs for us and often in difficult circumstances. This young bloke has a lot of potential and I can see him making a good opening or top order batsman. Does not get flustered with fast bowling or tough situations, just gets on with the job.

26

ST JOHN BOSCO JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB 2014-15 SEASON

Really solid with the bat and got us out of trouble a few times through the year and hung around to bat through the whole innings a couple of times. Has great batting technique for a young guy and capable of playing most shots. Ben was really handy with the ball and took some crucial wickets for us. Bowls a really nice line and length and rarely bowls no balls and wides. Things are only going to get better for Ben. Well done Ben, great effort mate.

Cooper SullivanThe teams strike bowler. Opened the bowling for us all year and took 17 wickets at less than 5 and got the job done for us week in week out with the new ball. Took crucial wickets for us throughout the year and knocked the stumps over plenty of times. Other teams we played found it really difficult to score runs off Cooper. Missed the stumps whilst bowling by millimetres countless times. I think he only bowled 1 wide all year. Was rewarded with a spot in the development squad. His batting improved as the year went on and will only get better if he keeps practising. Loves his cricket and will be back next year with the boys. Well done Coop, great effort mate.

John IssaJohnny “ants in your pants “ Issa. This young guy has so much energy and loves his cricket and loves life. He swears he doesn’t drink Red Bulls before the game but I am not sure. A pleasure to have in the team, a real gentleman. The boys loved having him in the team. Together with Dom, the team’s best fielders. Hardly let a ball past him in the field all year. Great with the bat and ball and scored nearly 100 runs for year which is a great effort. Scored a 25 not out which was well deserved and made a stack of other good scores for us with the bat. Bowls both spin and medium pace well and will only get better. Took some much needed wickets for us through the year. His bowling improved a heap towards the end of the year and teams found it really difficult to score off him.

Brock ThomasBrocky just loves his cricket and improved out of site this year. Modelled some of the latest hair styles throughout the year for the team and the local Engadine hairdressers. A pleasure to have in the team, well mannered, respectful and never complains about anything. Loves wining and competes on every ball. His bowling improved a heap throughout the year and took a couple of handy wickets for us throughout the year and scored valuable runs for us in tough situations when we needed them. Towards the end of the year jumped in behind the stumps to keep and did a great job with the gloves. With a bit of work I think Brocky could develop into a good keeper. Great in the field and took some good catches through the year. Brocky will only improve with time with a bit of hard work. Look forward to seeing you next year Brocky.

Nathan SteyneNathan doesn’t like to mention his uncle Dale much but I am sure his uncle would be proud of his efforts. Another well-mannered young bloke who did everything that was asked of him. Loves to smash the ball and only knows one way and that is to belt the ball as hard as he can. Made valuable runs for us on countless occasions with a high score of 24 not out. A real handy bowler who got better as the year went on and bowled without luck and should have had a few more wickets to his name. Hang around Nathan you will improve out of site next year and enjoy your cricket even more.

Assen MaroneyAssen was great to have around and was the life of the party. Always happy with a smile on his face and Johnny Roche and I loved having this little bloke in the team, at training and at the game and so did the boys in the team. I still cannot work out what he was digging for in the grass all the time but I am sure he will find it one day whatever he was looking for. Surprised everyone with the bat and ball and to see the smile on his face when he took a

wicket was priceless and is what cricket and sport is about for these guys. Improved all year with the bat and ball and scored us some handy runs when we needed them and was really hard to get with the bat. The last couple of games he played he really bowled well and cut the wides right down and bowled with good pace. I really hope he comes back next year and plays. PS bring a shovel!

10D’s End of Year Report 2014-15

What a great season the 10D’s gave us this year. The boys had 10 great games of cricket played in good spirit and smiles on their faces each week. The improvements both individually and as a team were outstanding and a pleasure to watch throughout the year.

Training was a lot of fun each week and the boys worked hard and continued to learn the most important basics of the game. They all practised their running between the wickets and good loud calling to each other with many an opposition coach commenting on the running between the wickets. Fielding was also another improvement area this year with the boys all gaining an understanding of good underarm returns and backing up, a lot of run outs resulted. Again batting and bowling improved with the team finishing with the least amount of no balls and the best team bowling average.

The boys were rewarded with being minor premiers and making it into the final against a very good Miranda side. After two very close games during the season the final did not disappoint. The game was amazing both teams playing great cricket and enjoying the occasion. The boys should not be disappointed with the result and proud of themselves that they played a final that went right down to the last ball of the game. Unfortunately Miranda just got the win on the day but it could have easily been a different result with only one run separating the two teams. Both Paul and I and all the parents are extremely proud of the effort the team put in during the season and the final, a terrific year.

Thank you to Paul Smithson for again taking on the coaching role. Paul did a great job with the boys on game day and taught the boys a lot of new skills coming up with new drills each week and most importantly kept all the boys enthused and having fun. To Todd Armstrong and the other parents that filled in when Todd was away a special thank you from Paul and me for taking on the scoring duty each week, a great help.

Thanks to the mum’s and dad’s that helped out at training, writing match reports, arranging a great BBQ for the final and giving up their time to bring the kids along to training and the games each week. Your support and encouragement for the team was terrific.

As far as the statistics went the team scored a total of 625 runs and the bowling attack took 115 wickets during the season.

A big congratulations to the 10D’s on a fantastic year. We hope to see you all back next season!

Ryan ArmstrongRyan had a great year with all areas of his game improving. A real team player that played with one arm during the year and during this period found the art of great line and length bowling taking some outstanding wickets. Ryan’s batting and fielding continued to improve throughout the year. Well done Ryan, a great year. Matthew Bruckard

ST JOHN BOSCO JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB 2014-15 SEASON

2015 10E's Players Report

The boys had a great season winning more games than we lost. They were very well behaved at raining especially when we had classic catches in the pool at my house on the extremely hot Friday afternoons. All the boys showed improvement in their cricket and enjoyed themselves, win , loose or draw. It gave me a lot of pleasure to coach a great group of kids who have a love of the game.

I would like to make a special thanks to Dave Sheargold for Managing the team and Jeff & Vanessa White for putting the scores in each week. I would also like to thank Mick Flanagan and Brett Graves for training the boys when I was unable to be there due to work commitments, I also appreciated the help with scoring from Chris Togher.

I hope all the boys enjoyed the season as much as I did and they all come back next year for another fun season.

Glen Armstrong

Bailey ArmstrongBailey had a good season with the bat and ball, he is a team player who loves to slide in the outfield to save a FOUR.

Ryder SheargoldRyder's cricket improved this year especially in the bowling department, keep that arm straight mate. He plays a top cover drive too.

Ben FlanaganBen did an outstanding job at wicket keeping and took some classic catches throughout the year. Ben also plays a good horizontal bat shot.

Jackson GravesJackson is an allrounder a keen cricketer and he did well with the ball and bat. He took some great classic catches in the pool!

Owen BurgherOwen had an excellent batting year scoring plenty of runs and is very enthusiastic in the field, aspiring to be like his grandfather. His new wicket keeping gloves help to stop plenty of runs.

Ian GillIan had heaps of improvement this year in his batting and bowling, well done mate!Elijah RyanElijah returned some great bowling figures this year consistently each week, he always plays with a smile on his face.

Thomas SmartThomas always listened at training and he did well for his 1st season. He improved batting once he got his David Warner "KABOOM" bat.

Zac WhiteZac is a powerful hitter, when he connects, the ball goes straight to the boundary. Good job Mate!

ST JOHN BOSCO JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB 2014-15 SEASON

Noah joined our team during the season and showed some brilliant bowling and batting skills and always listened at training

Patrick TogherPatrick enjoys his cricket and excelled this season in particular with his batting doing a great Pull shot/sweep shot.

St John Bosco Cricket Club U/8 Gold

What an amazing first up season of cricket with too many highlights to list. All eight boys were on debut and it was incredible to see their skills develop as the season progressed. I want to thank them all for their commitment all year, as it was rare not to have a full team at training. The support from all of the parents was second to none, I couldn’t of done it without you, so a big thank you to you all.

Special thanks to Rodney Edgar my manager and scorer, I often think that this job is harder than coaching I can’t believe we didn’t win a Croucher voucher. Also to Trent Harvey who filled in for me for one game as I was off looking for a mid-season marquee player signing in Fiji. I hope the boys enjoyed the season as much as I did, see you all next season were we can continue our four game winning streak.

Tate Brooks (Brad Haddin) Outstanding season Tate, some great performances with the bat and ball and possibly one of only two boys that could concentrate for 12 overs in the field. Loves being in the thick of the action, a wicket keeper in the making, also involved in one of the great batting partnerships of the year.

Harley Brown (Muttiah Muralitharan) Harley took a wicket with his first ever ball, from that moment on the ICC and media was on his back about his suspect action. After this was sorted out Harley went on to have some excellent bowling performances, another player who loves the wicket keeping duties. Wins the award most weeks with the dirtiest whites at the end of days play.

Benjamin Donohoe (Gramae Swan) Ben loved bowling with his sunnies on hence the nick name. Many highlights including being on a hattrick and hitting a two off the last ball of the game to win us the game by one run. My personal favourite is Ben’s taunting of the opposition bowlers with his one handed block shots. Ben I’m going to miss our talks about Pokémon in the off season.

Luke Edgar (Shane Watson) The true all-rounder of the team. Luke was the most consistent player all season with bat and ball and his dynamic fielding culminated with some direct hits resulted in many a run out for the team. Rumour has it Luke has been added to the Brazilian cricket world cup squad for 2019. Look forward to Luke taking his game to the next level.

Chase Edwards (Glen Maxwell) The self-tilted “Big show” worked out pretty early the harder you swing the bat the further the ball goes. Recovered from a mid-season broken foot to become the team’s leading run scorer. Chase’s season highlight came in the last game of year when he cleared the fence hitting our teams sole six of year. Good luck in Josh’s team next season as I’m not re-newing your contact.

Jasper Ellis (Mitchell Johnson). There was fear in the batsman’s eyes when I threw Jasper the ball. Fast and aggressive and when he got them right he was unplayable. More than handy with the bat playing a game winning innings with Tate dispatching the seagulls bowlers over their heads. Good luck in under 10s jasper you are a great little cricketer.

ST JOHN BOSCO JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB 2014-15 SEASON

Lachlan Harvey (Steve Smith. )Another all-rounder and a great competitor. Lachlan was always amongst the runs and wickets. Played the cover drive of the season which ran all the way to the boundary. Lachy has a big future in cricket and will only get better. A pleasure to coach.

Harison McCann (Michael Clarke) One of the pups of the team. The first thing you notice about Harry is his infectious smile and his politeness. Harrison was at his best off the long run up and if he wasn’t hitting the wickets he was hitting the square leg umpire. Harry has a great eye and is one of the team’s best trainers. I expect big things next year.

Under 8 White End of Year Report

Wow what a great year! A tremendous effort from what was clearly the A side of the under 8s (sorry Brad!). We had a young team this year, with only 2 going up to the 10s next year, but every week we tried our best against older and more experienced opponents.

Leny Legros - Our player of the year was Leny, who got 8 wickets and 125 runs off the bat. His bowling improved out-of-sight throughout the season, and his pull shot was a sight to see. Leny did a great job the times he was wicket-keeper, with countless stumpings and a classic diving catch the late, great Richie Benaud would have described as ‘Simply Marvellous’. Good luck in the under 10s next year mate.

Kyanne Armstrong - Kyanne, our other player going up next year, showed a tremendous improvement in her batting technique this year and looked particularly stylish with her brand new helmet. Thanks to Santa for the much needed equipment. Coach will miss your ‘spunk’ in the field next year!

Max Carey – Our left-arm, right-arm, over-the-wicket, around-the-wicket, Mitchell Johnson-like fast bowler. He put the fear of God into our opposition batsmen, as well as the coach standing at square leg. His Kookaburra bat was a blocking machine. Looking forward to another under 8s season with you next year mate.

Ruby Johnstone – one of our debutantes, was our strongest right-arm pitcher…..I mean bowler! She took an amazing 7 wickets in her first year, with a couple of 2-fors. Her batting and running between wickets was much improved throughout the season and she was a fantastic slider of the bat.

Erin Johnstone – Erin, who was also a debutante, did a fantastic job in her first year keeping her arm straight when she bowled. She was also very courteous, asking the coach prior to each of her deliveries whether everyone was ready for her to bowl. If only all the kids were as thoughtful!

Lincoln Cooper – Lincoln was poached form the B side early on in the season, and was a great signing! Apart from the many questions asked throughout the game, he was also one of the most attentive players in field. His Merv Hughes-like run-up was a highlight, and he kept the opposing batsmen honest with numerous run-outs.

Zach Lewis – Our final debutante, Zach was the leading catcher in the team this season, including 2 great catches at mid-wicket off Max’s bowling in the final game of the year. With 9 wickets and 51 runs off the bat, it was great year of cricket for our youngest player.

Ethan Lewis - Ethan, in his second year of cricket, was our most technical and consistent batsmen, the highlight being a straight drive he hit for 4. His bowling style, resembling Max Walker (tangles), delivered our only caught-behind of the season.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable season. It was great to see the kid’s enjoyment and improvement increase throughout the year. Thanks very much to those parents who assisted at training and with scoring, in particular Steve Cooper (Lincoln’s dad) and Glen Armstrong (Kyanne’s dad).

ST JOHN BOSCO JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB 2014-15 SEASON

MENS SECRETARY REPORT 2014-15

It was an enjoyable year all-round for the gentleman of the St John Bosco Youth Centre Cricket Club. It was great to see another incident free year, continuing Bosco’s long record of good sportsmanship and fair play.

Bosco entered two teams in to the senior competition in 2014/15. The teams consisted of 36 players, 10 of which were part-time. Both teams had some up and downs but unfortunately neither could make it in to the finals this year.

The B2s always had a challenge when they were promoted two grades after finishing middle of the table in the B4s last season. They managed the one win in round 11 but were competitive in many of their games. Rory Rowe took out the batting award with over 300 runs for the season. Rory also scored the club’s only century for the men this season. Liam Hamling took out the bowling award.

Liam Hamling was also named Club Senior Player of the Year for the second time. Liam contributed in all forms of the game with 230, 14 wickets, 3 catches and 1 stumping.

The revolving door of captains in the B4s side continued this year with Marty Dantas taking the helm. The team was competitive beating every team in the comp except for one. But that was only enough to get them to the middle of the table, finishing fourth overall. The wins came on the back of great team efforts, but there were some great individual performances on the way including 5-fors from Andrew Fenn, Pat Eades and Paul Barclay and a match-winning performance with the bat and ball by Tim in round 12. Paul Barclay took out the bowling award and Jason Vincent won the batting award.

As well as the action on the field there were also a number of events off the field including the end-of-season presentation. This year the guys decided to have a Twenty20 game between the two teams in place of a presentation night. It was good to see most of the guys having a go and sharing a few beers afterwards.

Next season we will be aiming to increase the numbers in the senior competition so if you are thinking about giving it a go now is a good time. Looking forward to seeing all the boys back next year and hopefully a few more.

ST JOHN BOSCO JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB 2014-15 SEASON

MENS SEASON REPORTS 2014-15

B2 season report.

It can’t be said that the mighty Bosco B2’s had an inspiring year this past season.  Results on the pitch were hardly of a spectacular nature and certainly not in the realm of our consistent past deeds in making the finals over the last few seasons.  Not sure if we came stone motherless last, but if not, we certainly made up the numbers at the south end of the table.

That being said though, we did manage to surprise ourselves every now and then, maybe once or twice both on and off the field.  The B2’s has been the highest grade this team has played in, our final standing in the table was probably not a true reflection of the capabilities of the individuals in the team or the team as a whole.  Whilst we had twenty two players registered, often it was difficult to muster a full team for our Saturday outings.

Through various reasons such as Schoolies, hangovers, dedication to the ‘misso’ (Tudjman and JT), dedication to the books (Sean), end of season soccer jaunts, horse racing days and sometimes just not showing up at all (Favaloro), consistency of players and performance was lacking.  This didn’t help to maintain any momentum or continuity in the off situation that we played well one week that didn’t carry over to the following week.  Nevertheless, fun was still had together with a bit of tom foolery, and that is what it is all about.

Highlights of the year: Rory Rowe's inaugural ton after many years of talking himself out of ever achieving

this milestone. Neil Hamling's extraordinary 90 while although being oh so close yet again to the

magic number, was achieved in stiflingly hot and humid conditions. In the same game as Neil's 90, beating an obnoxious Como with only 10 men (plus a

couple of ring-ins) after barely being able to scratch a team together on the morning of the game.

Again in that same game and perhaps an historical first in the Sutherland Shire men's cricket competition, our mates from Como scoring an all run five during the game.  Only three fielders on the leg side with two old blokes at deep fine leg and deep long on waving Daniel Van Ruth with an injured ankle (after much protestation and committee meetings) to chase a shot to deep mid wicket from his short leg fielding position.

Having a quiet drink after a game (twice) at the clubhouse and still being present post midnight, only leaving because the beer fridge had been drunk dry and the problems of the world solved (yep, we all hate Mark Nicholas).

GVR and Tudjman being dismissed by the first two deliveries of the day forcing Liam Hamling to face a hat-trick ball on the 3rd ball.

In the same game, Rory Rowe managing to score 6 runs in the first 20 overs to the frustration of the lads on the sidelines, then going on to post a score of around 90 by the end of the 40 overs.

Sean Castro’s diving, one-handed screamer of a catch at Boys Town Oval. Liam Hamling’s cheap 5 wicket haul in the same game. Damo’s first 50 marked by a master class in big hitting.

ST JOHN BOSCO JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB 2014-15 SEASON

The infamous run of games where the squad was dismissed for 80, 55 and 44 consecutively.

And finally, a more comical moment, when a bozo from the Miranda side complained of chatter during Dan Evans’ run up for the first ball, forcing him to retake the delivery, only for the clown to be bowled by the retaken delivery. It can be assumed that the batsmen received quite a send off from the lads.

See you all again next season for more flannelled foolery!!!!!

Phil

B4 season report.

Well it’s that time of year again to put out this annual tome and once more the author of this review has been provided with an exceptional amount of material with which to convey the past season’s highlights, lowlights and oddlights.

The year started off with the Bowlologist getting in the ear of Andrew Fenn and telling him to go very short and very wide outside off. 45 minutes later history shows 5/24, and NO ONE can ever take that away from him! The team had a brilliant round 2 with Illawong forfeiting before defeating Bangor Tavern 276 to 195, with Martin Dantas scoring 82 and Paul Barclay ripping through the middle order with 5/42. Blake Holden bowled particularly well and miserly – 16 overs, 8 maidens, 2/19.

A hiccup against Kareela that probably cost us the semis in the end, was followed by what was by far and away the worst display of fielding ever seen in the Antipodes. Some catches are variously known as ‘sodas’, ‘dollies’ and ‘sitters’. We need a whole new category to describe some of the ones dropped in Round 6.

This disaster was then erased by one of our better fielding efforts seen by this side in a long time. Up against the comp leaders who had thrashed all comers and were a thousand points ahead on the ladder, we tore strips off them for 127 all out – their lowest 1 st inns total for the year by some 100 runs. Honours shared all round with Blake, Barcas, Pat Eades, Fenn and Jay Vincent all taking wickets.

The run chase started in the usual fashion (1/0), but some steady, sensible batting from Michael Cross (28) took us past 50. A wobble here or there left us teetering before a solid hitout from Julian Batchelor with 30 got us over the line with 1 solitary wicket to spare. Well done, continuing our uncanny knack for knocking off comp leaders who don’t respect or take us seriously.

Next game some good batting from Vinno (56), Jules (45) and lusty hitting from Paul scoring 21 off the last over gave us a defendable total of 188, however, luck deserted us with the opposition doing it easy in their dig. Lightning and cyclonic driving rain saved the day. Only Matt Battam took a wicket that afternoon with a peach of a delivery, one of the best of the year. Comets finished 1/111 with 18 overs to go when the rain came down.

David Robinson claimed 3/18 with his controlled swing bowling against Illawong and Jules belted 59 to get the win. We then came up against a rampaging Bangor Tavern and it saw us turn in our lowest batting total for the season with the team out for 59 chasing 185. Only Battam could hold his head up, scoring 37 of them. Pat earned his 3/38 and Barcas was tidy with 2/17 off 8.

A top spell of bowling saw Tim take 4/24 against Kareela before sharing a vital partnership with Vinno for us to fall across the line in round 12. I can’t move on without mentioning

ST JOHN BOSCO JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB 2014-15 SEASON

Mitchell Worsley, who was given out LBW after hitting the ball off the middle of the bat. We’re sure to still be hearing about this in 2035.

The fielding against St Pats the second time around was a marked improvement however reverting to type we just forgot to take wickets and the opposition cruised to 340 off 60 overs. Well done to Mitch and Michael Vu who both showed up the regulars and did manage to take one apiece.

Pat found some form with the ball and in a heated spell of unplayable fast bowling took 5 wickets to kick off the final match. With 60 overs to play we were 238 runs behind and needing an outright for the semis. It was fated to happen.

But it didn’t. Sorry. We tried really hard. Honest! Jules battled superbly to keep us in the game. Running on one leg he was in all sorts but in another brazenly ridiculous decision, the ump had the finger up BEFORE the keeper even had the ball. By the time the bails were off Jules was well past the stumps. Out for 66 and denied what looked to be a certain century.

The season should have ended there. Michael Vu arrived at the crease and had other ideas. Subscribers to these reports would know what I am talking about. For those who don’t, strange and unusual things tend to happen when Vu plays cricket. It is not often one witnesses a handle-the-ball dismissal, but the Vu-Man gave us something to remember this year. For that we salute you, and we’ll try one day to stop laughing about it.

It would be remiss of me not to mention a few other happenings this year. Congratulations are due to:

- Andrew and Jess for their nuptials in February- Mitchell and Deborah for their wedding in April- Mark and Grace for their bub on the way

On a personal note, I started playing cricket for Bosco in 1995 – 20 seasons and 225 odd games ago. To me, cricket would not mean much without all of you, and how we further and foster our unique brand of half-arsed efforts, lolling our rivals into false senses of security. You can’t bat without someone at the other end, and you can’t be a good keeper without a bowler getting edges. To Barcas, Jules, Battam, Crossy, the Eades brothers, Fenn, Blake, Tim, Ogle, Rob-o, Vinno, Vu, Mitch and many many others MIA along the way thanks for the memories.

Special thanks also to our Club Committee, especially to Pipes, Dave and the evergreen Errol, without whom no one would be taking guard each game. Finally, congrats to our award winners – Vinno (241 @ 40.2) and Barcas (24 @ 12.16). Well deserved and well played. See you all back in 2015/16.
