BOTTLED WATER FICTION.
SPRING 2020
There is no shortage of water due to this pandemic. Greenlawn water is perfectly safe, and therefore, there is no need to stock up on bottled water. In fact, your Greenlawn Water District tap water is stringently regulated and is regularly tested, far more so than bottled water. Of course, with tap water, there are no disposable bottles entering the waste stream or landfills.
Just as the famous Rosie The Riveter WWII poster indicated generations
ago, winning the fight against the coronavirus requires cooperation by everyone…but we can do it! “The Greenlawn Water District team has been taking decisive, proactive measures to protect the public and to keep the water flowing, “Commissioner John Clark stated. “Our water supply is safe. COVID-19 virus is not waterborne, and we routinely chlorinate. There has been no interruption of service and our water continues to be in compliance with all federal, New York State and Suffolk County regulations.”
Commissioner Clark also noted “the District has taken numerous precautionary measures to protect the health of all personnel, including social distancing and the use of masks and gloves. We have educated our staff on disinfectant protocols, and we have been working in split shifts since March to ensure maximum safety. ” Paying Water Bills: In an abundance of caution, public access to the Greenlawn Water District office at 45 Railroad Street, has been restricted until further notice. Check payments for water bills can be left at any time in our drop box.
Visits to your home: Our service technicians will not be allowed to enter your home until further notice due to virus control measures such as social distancing.
Emergencies: As always, the Greenlawn Water District staff is there for you in all water emergencies. To report an emergency, call (631)-261-0874.
Note to consumers: Greenlawn has won the Suffolk County Best Tasting Tap Water contest 10 times, including the last two contests in 2018 and 2019!

Water district infrastructure includes wells, pumping systems, controls like SCADA,
and in the case of our District, over 1,250 hydrants and more than 200 miles of water mains. It’s certainly a lot to maintain 24/7, but we have the trained staff and the expertise to do it.
For the record, 100% of our tax dollars are dedicated to the production of your water including compliance and preventive maintenance of the water distribution system,” Commissioner James Logan stated.
INFRASTRUCTURE: YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK!
Pilot studies are small scale preliminary studies conducted to evaluate
feasibility (duration, cost, advantages, adverse effects, etc.) and implementation prior to launching a full-scale project. The Greenlawn Water District Pilot Study utilized two different water treatment technologies for the removal of 1,4-dioxane. Funded by a grant from the Center for Clean Water Technology at Stony Brook University, the studies were brought to successful conclusion. We’ll keep you posted on progress!

The need for Long Island to conserve water as a region is mandated by New York State.
“People often ask me why do we need to conserve water when Greenlawn has such a plentiful supply?” Commissioner John McLaughlin noted. “We need to look further than just today. Our wells pump from a sole source aquifer. However, emerging chemicals from Long Island’s farming and industrial past could endanger the future water supply that we bequeath to our children and grandchildren. Conservation measures that we observe now can help ensure sustainability of our precious water supply for the future. Small steps can mean big savings.”

Our meter replacement program had been progressing ahead of schedule, but was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, with our return to full staffing, the replacement of outdated water meters located outside the home will resume. Replacement of interior meters will resume only when pandemic restrictions permit and only in coordination with residents.
