Jeremy Dittus enjoys a career as a pianist, theorist, and Dalcroze eurhythmics instructor. An avid recitalist, he has performed solo and chamber programs and presented Dalcroze masterclasses throughout the United States and in Europe. He currently teaches on the summer faculty at Colorado State University where he founded and now directs the Dalcroze School of the Rockies Dalcroze Academy teacher-training center. A former lecturer in piano, theory, and solfege at the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory in Cleveland, he also has instructed undergraduate solfege, piano, and composition courses at the University of Colorado at Boulder as well as eurhythmics and solfege at L’Institut Jaques-Dalcroze in Geneva, Switzerland.

Dr. Dittus is the founder and director of the Dalcroze School of the Rockies in Denver, Colorado, the only authorized Dalcroze training center west of Pittsburgh in the United States. The DSR offers Eurhythmics classes for children (pre-kindergarten through high school), adult enrichment classes, and full time study toward the Dalcroze Certificate/License (eurhythmics, solfege, improvisation, and pedagogy). Additionally, he has presented Dalcroze workshops at home and abroad including the World Piano Conference, International Early Childhood Music and Movement Convention, National Dalcroze Conference, American Orff-Schulwerk Association National Convention, National Flute Convention, Colorado Music Educators Association State Convention, Piano Celebration at Metro-State University in Denver, University of Louisville Piano Institute, in addition to several summer music institutes, universities, and conservatories across the country. He also serves on the state board for the Colorado Federation of Music Clubs and functions as the Vice President of the Dalcroze Society of America. He recently has published books on Dalcroze Education: Embodying Music: A Textbook for Dalcroze Teacher Training, and the first of five books that correspond to the Rhythmic-Solfege youth program in place at the Dalcroze School of the Rockies.

Presenting Spring Workshop Guest Faculty Dr. Jeremy Dittus Everett Goodwin

Everett Goodwin began violin studies at age 5. He attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison where he received a Bachelor of Music diploma with a violin major. During the summers of his final two years, 1968 and 1969, Dr. Shinichi Suzuki held two week seminars in Madison. An opportunity became available for Everett to play in a master class for Dr. Suzuki which eventually changed the course of Everett’s musical career.

After studying for his undergraduate degree, Everett was accepted as a student of Sidney Harth. He enrolled as graduate performance major at Carnegie Mellon University and received his MFA degree in 1971. While in Pittsburgh, Everett and his wife worked at the St. Francis Hospital children’s mental health in-patient unit. Both he and his wife were moved to dedicate their life to helping children. The inspirational speeches for the sake of children given by Dr. Suzuki two years earlier now took on deep significance for Everett. He decided to use his love of violin and his good technical training to develop his teaching ability in the Suzuki method.

He had teacher training under Marge Aber in 1972 and 73. He attended the summer institutes in Stevens Point from 1973-77. He then worked under Marge from 1978 to 1981 as a full time teacher in the American Suzuki Institute and also as violin teacher at UW-Stevens Point. In 1981 Everett became the director of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Suzuki Talent Education Program. He retired from that position in 2004.

His teaching career has included work as a Suzuki clinician throughout the United States, Canada ,and New Zealand. He continues to teach privately and accepts invitations as a guest clinician. He and his wife enjoy performing chamber recitals. Playing the violin remains the great joy of Everett’s creative life.

Everett and Santha have four children and eleven grandchildren. He is now teaching 3 of his grandchildren.

Jessica began studying Suzuki violin at age 3 at Wheaton College in Wheaton Illinois under Kee Soon Ahn and William Fuhrberg. Leslie S. Harrington, MD Physiatrist

Katie Couch Colorado native Katie Couch grew up playing the piano. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in piano performance at the University of Colorado-Boulder, Katie moved to Shanghai, China, where she lived for three years teaching English and piano.

In 2010, Katie returned to CU-Boulder to study music education at the graduate level, and soon earned a Master’s degree and a Colorado public school teaching license. Around the same time, Katie began professional studies in Dalcroze Education, a unique and specialized form of music education which uses the entire body in rhythmic movement to teach music theory.

Katie earned the Dalcroze Certificate in 2013 and is now working along the Front Range as a eurhythmics teacher for the Dalcroze School of the Rockies, a private piano teacher, and a freelance pianist. Katie is currently working towards the next level of Dalcroze Licensure, which will certify her to teach eurhythmics to advanced musicians.

Katie greatly appreciates her former and current teachers, including Elizabeth Zawadowski-McCanne, Alejandro Cremaschi, and Jeremy Dittus. In her spare time, Katie can be found reading, playing the piano, running, and listening to music.

As an adult, she enjoys playing piano and has taught herself to play some of the “beginner hit parade” (e.g., Hot Cross Buns) on clarinet, trombone, cello, and violin in an effort to better understand the medical problems of her musician patients.

Dr. Harrington does also see a wide variety of other conditions, and can address rehab issues for patients with neurological problems such as stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, myelopathy, radiculopathy, peripheral neuropathy, etc. She frequently treats neck, back and extremity pain, including joint complaints.

'I wanted to thank you for awarding a BSS scholarship to my daughters. We truly appreciate the support as we strive to give our

daughters the best musical education we can and allow them to follow their dreams to the best of their ability. We greatly value

your program and the love of and knowledge of music it is inspiring in our children as they learn violin. Thank you for making it

possible for them to continue to follow their dreams.'

-BSS Parent

‘I spent the first eight years of playing violin with Boulder Suzuki Strings. This would never have been possible if not for the

scholarships they offered my family. These scholarships enabled me to take lessons and to discover what it meant to be musician.

With this strong foundation I was able to continue violin throughout high school and into college. As I see it, music is a joyful

vehicle through which I can “do good” and bring more beauty to our world. I am very grateful that I have had the opportunity to

study music and that I was able to participate in Boulder Suzuki Strings.’

-Shanti van Vuuren

‘I am so blessed to have been a part of Boulder Suzuki Strings growing up. The private lessons with inspiring teachers taught me so

much about not only violin playing, but also how my mind works. The Group Classes allowed me to experience the power of

communal music making. Through playing and learning I connected personally with many other students. My experience in BSS

played a big part in forming who I am today. It was a big part of what inspired me to love music to the point of making it my life’s

calling. Because my family could not afford to pay the full cost of the lessons and group classes that form the BSS experience, it was

a wonderful blessing that my involvement in BSS was made possible by the scholarship program. It was truly the best gift I could

ever have received, and there is nothing I can do or say to repay such wonderful kindness, I am just so, so thankful. I hope the

scholarship program lives on and brings this gift to other kids who otherwise would not be able to afford it, and that they will be

blessed by a life changing experience like the one I had.’

-Bram Margoles, graduated from BSS 2012

‘Our family is so grateful to Boulder Suzuki Strings for providing us with scholarships during the economic depression. Both my

husband and I are self-employed and really took a hit for several years. BSS means the world to our family, and receiving the

scholarship enabled us to continue with lessons and group for our children. What an enriching experience! The passion, sensitivity

and enjoyment of music has been a huge defining factor in all of our lives. Happily, we no longer need the scholarships and are

looking forward to supporting other families in need.’
