Bean Soup Project- Intergenerational Mission

January 19 at 10:00 am

It’s that time of year … soup time! We will be assembling bean soup mixes on January 19 in Fellowship Hall. They will be donated to food pantries. The clients love these mixes, which include the mixture of beans as well as tomatoes, spices and instructions.

Assembling the mixes was a children’s Sunday School project for years, and is now open to all ages. It’s a fun and easy winter project. Please join us and give it a try!

Besides helping on that morning, you can help by bringing in dry beans on January 5 and 12. We need bags of pinto beans, Great Northern beans, black beans, and green split peas. We are making a layered mix, so no bean mixtures, please. There will be a soup pot in the lounge for your donations.

Thank you all and see you then. If you have questions, ask Jan Plas (614-486-7510).

Approaching a New Year

2020 is here… or will be here very shortly if you are reading this newsletter before January 1, 2020. (Yes, I keep saying 2020 again and again because there is a part of me that can’t believe it’s here and a part of me that says there is no way it is here!) The beginning of a new year is a natural and wonderful time to look to the future. During worship on December 22, I shared several dreams with you as we looked at the dreams of Mary and Joseph in the weeks and months before the birth of Jesus. At the same time, each person was encouraged to be open to dreaming and especially to the way God may speak to us through dreams and use us throughout our lives. As I arrived home that Sunday afternoon, I was thinking about what our lives would look like if we truly opened our lives to the leading of the Spirit when I saw a stretched canvas that Debbie has hanging in our house. I’ve always loved the ideas it shares, but it became an even more vibrant image of what our lives can look like when we seek to do God’s will daily. Perhaps the insights it provides can be a starting place as we seek to live faithfully in 2020 and beyond. (It includes various fonts, colors and sizes of print that I cannot replicate here.)

Today is a new day! You can start fresh, wipe the slate clean &

begin again Embrace kindness

Practice compassion Stand for justice Talk to strangers

Ask for help Listen with your whole heart

Offer hope Work for the common good

Love well Be the change you wish to see in the world.

PRESTON

Per Capita Per capita began in 1734 as a way to promote our connection to one another as a denomination. The amount of per member is not only a part of our history, but instead is a vital and substantial investment in our future. The majority of each contribution, stays in the Presbytery of Scioto Valley to support every congregation in the presbytery. These funds not only pay the PSV paid staff members, but are also used to fund mission grants, commissions support to congregations, and to provide pastoral support and

transitions across our vast geographic area. The Presbytery of Scioto Valley will vote on the exact amount for Per Capita for 2020 at their February 18 meeting, and Boulevard will be disbursing that information to you as soon as we have knowledge of it. It is anticipated to be approximately $37.75 per member.

Today’s congregation continues strong traditions of:

Living faith through worship, mission, education, and fellowship with the vision of “Reaching Out to Make Disciples.”

Following the path laid out by God through his son, Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Sharing the inclusive love of God to all of God’s children and God’s creation.

Exposing the light of Christ to the world through music, words, prayer, and actions.

Second Sunday Class “Are You Ready?”

January 12 at 10:00 am Our Second Sunday class, on January 12, is titled “Are You Ready?” and will explore some thoughts on end of life issues and some preparation for death.

Are you ready? What do we need to think about when we consider our own death? What are some practical issues everyone should be at least considering? What things should we be discussing with our medical team? Our children or other relatives? Our attorney? When do we start this process? Should this process begin in our twenties? Later? Earlier? What kinds of things should we be considering at various stages of life? It is rather obvious that if we have very young children our concerns are much different than when we are empty nesters and retired. Does our faith play a role in our decisions? How does that play out? If you have a preplanned and prepaid funeral, a will, and have informed your next of kin of where things are located, is this class even something you should attend? We hope to see you, with an open mind and perhaps even a list of questions. The only two examples I can think of who got to heaven skipping death are Enoch and Elijah, but if you have another name, come and share that with us.

Advent Devotionals

Once again we have benefitted from the wisdom and insights of members of our church family via the Advent Devotionals that Kyme Rennick coordinated again in 2019. It is so refreshing to read a piece of Scripture and then see how one of our family applies it to their lives. it is so easy to hear, or read, or study scripture, but many of us never seem to be able to apply it to our lives, and these insights are such blessings!

I would ask each of you to think about your own walk and seriously consider just how these teachings inform your own lives. It has become a little harder to find people willing to spend a few hours doing this. Perhaps it is your turn to share. You will be hearing more about this throughout the upcoming year. Please consider and pray about sharing your own spiritual journey. Blessings for this New Year.

Book Club meets January 21

Book Club will resume January 21 at 7:00 pm with a discussion on The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson. It is preferable to have read the book to be able to take part in the discussion, but don’t let completing the book stop you from sharing your ideas about it. Book Club will also be discussing what books to choose for the new year.

A Very Special Thank You

A huge “Thank You” to Nancy Henning for her many years of exceptional work in our Nursery. She resigned her position after four years as of December

22, 2019. It has been a huge gift to know our children are cared for, loved, and safe while we attend worship. Being here each Sunday, like the postal carriers, in all sorts of weather, all the way from Gahanna is beyond welcome. We have all been so blessed by her steadfastness.

Heifer Mission Collection 2019 Our mission drive for Heifer International collected $4,203 this year--one of the largest collections we have had for Heifer! The animals and care kits that will be

purchased with these funds will make a significant difference in the lives of many people by enabling them to work towards a sustainable livelihood not only for themselves but also for those who will be sharing in the bounty these animals will provide.

Of the total collected, the youth at Boulevard, ranging from preschoolers in Wee Worship through seniors in high school, raised $374.31 from leaf raking, chores, allowances and donations. Congratulations! This amount was matched by the Mission Committee from the undesignated mission fund and allowed the youth to donate:

2 pigs 2 sheep

2 Hope Baskets 2 Flocks of Geese 2 Flocks of Chicks 2 Flocks of Ducks

2 Hives of Honeybees

Donations totaling $635 were made in Honor Gifts and were used to supply:

7 Hope Baskets 3 Flocks of Chicks 2 Flock of Ducks

2 Hives of Honeybees 1 Goat

The balance of $2,813 enabled us to purchase several larger animals that we have not typically been able to supply. It is very exciting to see that we will also give:

3 Heifers 2 Mating Pairs of Alpacas

1 Water Buffalo 1 Trio of Rabbits

2 Community Animal Health Care Kits $3 where needed

Thank you sharing the love of Christ with those who will receive these gifts through your generous contributions to this very worthwhile organization.

The Best Blind Band in the Land in Tampa Florida

The Best Blind Band in the Land, the only marching band in the world composed of students with visual disabilities, formally known as The Ohio State School for the Blind Marching Band, performed at halftime at the Outback Bowl, January 1, 2020 in Tampa, Florida at 1:00 p.m. (televised on ESPN). 18 students and their marching assistants perform with other high school marching bands. The group left December 28 and returned January 2. The trip included a day at Disney’s Magic Kingdom Theme Park, competing in the Outback Bowl Music Festival Marching Band Competition on December 30 (their first time to compete in a marching band festival), marching in the National Outback Bowl New Year’s Eve Parade in Ybor City on December 31; New Year’s Eve at Busch Gardens, and, finally, the Outback Bowl. Boulevard Church is covering the expenses of two students on this trip. Be sure to watch!

A bit of history: Carol Agler revived the band program at OSSB in 1998. She founded the Marching Band in 2005. Their signature marching drill is Script Braille Ohio to “Le Regiment de Sambre et Meuse” in the fashion of The Ohio State University Marching Band. The band performed in the Tournament of Roses Parade January 1, 2010, the International Lions Club Parade in 2011 in Seattle, Washington, and in 2016 in Chicago Illinois at the 100th Anniversary of the International Lions Club. They performed their signature drill while OSUMB performed Script Ohio at the Florida A&M football game halftime show in 2013. Mary Ann Stockum, now retired from the band, was one of the first marching assistants. Carol Agler retired in 2015, and is now Director Emeritus. She and Fred Agler continue as marching assistants and Carol volunteers during band classes as well. They will travel to Florida to guide students.

Googling “Youtube Ohio State School for the Blind Band” will produce many videos of the band.

Boy Scout Troop 73 News The Scouts of Troop 73 just completed our 2019 Christmas tree sale, and it was a big success: We sold approximately 450 Christmas trees! We are very grateful for the support we receive from our communities. 2019 was a very successful year for our Scouts. Six of our guys became Eagle Scouts this year. We had 21 youth and 9 adults attend Summer Camp at Camp Falling Rock. In July, 12 adults and 12 youth hiked a 6-day trek on the Appalachian Trail near Damascus, Virginia. Troop 73 just received some wonderful news from Simon Kenton Council. Hal Schofield, our Troop Committee Chair and past Scoutmaster, has been selected to receive the BSA Silver Beaver Award. The Silver Beaver Award is presented for distinguished service to young people within a BSA local council. It is the highest council recognition awarded to registered adults for distinguished service to youth. This is a very significant award, and Hal is obviously extremely deserving. Hal has been involved with Troop 73 for 18 years. Troop 73 will be traveling to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico in June of this year. Philmont represents the ultimate high adventure experience for Scouts. 21 of our youth and adults will spend 12 days backpacking the large, rugged, mountainous ranch. This January marks the 92nd anniversary for Scout Troop 73 meeting at Boulevard Presbyterian Church. Thank you all very much for providing us with a wonderful place to call home!
