It’s not every day that your local Dry Cleaner receives a Royal Warrant! It turns out that Barker Group are not just your local Dry Cleaner. From supplying Downton
Abbey with Gentleman’s Accessories and manufacturing Superior Quality Bed Linens, we wanted to learn more about this dynamic company so we interviewed Managing Director and avid Rugby Fan Matthew Barker!
Matthew – How did you get involved with Bournemouth Rugby? It is the only sport I am really passionate about having played in my youth. I scored some tries in
my time but when I discovered girls it seemed to me there were better things to do on a Saturday! Of course I was wrong! More recently I have enjoyed the sport with my Son who was a junior player at Bournemouth and now through sponsorship.
Matthew - How has your business evolved during this period?Wow, where do I start! We are known locally as
Dry Cleaners but, in fact, dry cleaning and our retail division actually account for less than 20% of our revenue. At our core is our laundry business which specialises in high quality domestic services to private individuals. But in more recent years we have expanded the business adding gentleman’s collars and accessories and a new line of luxury hotel quality bed linens to complement our core services.
We are now a Textile Services & Products Group with a growing online presence as well as our own delivery fleet covering central southern England and Greater London. In 2015 I was thrilled that the business had been awarded a Royal Warrant for services to HRH The Prince of Wales. I believe this is an awesome achievement as it recognises my teams’ commitment to provide a truly high quality service.
The latest addition to the group is The Barker Collection, our range of high quality bed linens and soft furnishings.Following several years of research, I found the best source of quality cotton in India where we are now manufacturing. All our
cotton products can be sourced back to the field where the cotton bud was picked and we are in control of the quality standards at every stage of the spinning, weaving and tailoring process. No other supplier is able to guarantee this.
The Barker Collection launched in Autumn 2016 and our online bed linen store is gaining momentum with customers especially loving the fact that their new bed linen arrives freshly laundered, nicely presented in a luxurious gift box and bed ready.
Matthew – What are you currently looking forward to most in this new rugby season?Well, apart from Bournemouth doing exceptionally well this season, it has to be the launch
of our new range of FUNBACK shirts. These are dress shirts with a twist. This autumn we are launching three new designs including a specially themed rugby shirt.
Matthew, you must be exhausted with so much going on, I am surprised you can find time for Rugby? You are match sponsors, with the big day on Saturday 9th September, we look forward to seeing you then, do you have any closing comment?
I’ll be on the sideline with some friends, eagerly supporting a club that I believe has an amazing future, I hope it’s an exciting game and good luck to both teams.

I think it is fair to say that both teams today were a little chastened by their respective experiences in the opening matches of the season
last weekend. I am sure for all teams there is an excitement and optimism at the prospects for the forthcoming season in the pre-season training mixed with an uncertainty of what changes others will have made over the close season and the effect that will have on their prospects. At Chapel Gate we entertained newly-promoted Newbury Blues who have done so well to stabilise their situation over the past five seasons and we found ourselves 14-nil down after just ten minutes play before we came to terms with fast-running and clever ball-handling opponents. Meanwhile at Lily Hill Park, I understand, Bracknell faced opponents Newton Abbot stiffened by players with recent Premiership experience and that represents a considerable challenge for teams at our level. So given that pre-season optimism, the outcomes were one of disappointment. However, as the saying goes, it is how you react to adversity and this afternoon will be a real test for two sides looking to get their season and their hopes back on track. Bracknell need no introduction to Bournemouth supporters as they have been rivals more or less since the leagues began but we offer Chairman Clive Field and the remainder of the Bracknell party a warm welcome to Chapel Gate.
In a sickening parallel to the opening home game last season I am sorry to say that lock Toby Kenneally suffered a broken fibula and tibula in the eighth minute and, similarly, the game was held up for a lengthy period while the medical team attended to him. The only possible consolation that can come out of this was the professional treatment of Andy Curtis and his team, including, I might add, assisted by the Newbury physio, enabled the trauma to be kept to a minimum. They had the use of some valuable equipment provided by the generosity of Alan Gilbert and I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to him for his concern for the welfare of the players and his generous contribution to the practicalities of looking after them. As a result the hospital were able to operate on Toby on admission probably saving a fortnight in his rehabilitation and a lot of pain as well. We wish Toby a speedy recovery.
Our match sponsor this afternoon is Matt Barker of the Barker Group who do all our laundry for us. To pack a pile of sweaty, dirty kit on a Sunday morning and then for it to reappear on Thursday, as if by magic, beautifully clean borders on miraculous. Matt you know how grateful we all are, especially Mrs Warren, but it doesn’t hurt to say ‘thank you’ once again does it?
We first met Henry Lowis, our referee today, at Hornets last February where we managed to reverse a home defeat suffered in October. It is Henry’s first visit to Chapel Gate, certainly in terms of refereeing 1st XV league matches and we offer him a warm welcome. The referee adviser is Simon Thomas who has been to Chapel Gate any number of times in his present role and as a referee and we also offer him a warm welcome and hope both he and Henry enjoy their afternoon with us.
I heard from Nigel Yeoman of the death of David Haddleton. Nigel writes:
David Haddleton was the second son of former president Bill Haddleton. He was educated at St. Edwards, Oxford, and after doing his National service in the Army, joined the rugby section in 1957. He was able to play anywhere in the three-quarter line having a devastating burst of speed, but his best position was fly-half. His partnership with Paul Dart at scrum-half was a class act in the years 1958-1960 and it was exciting to play outside this combination if you were a centre or winger. He was also something of a rarity in those days—a fly-half with a devastating tackle which made him an extra back row forward. He and his wife emigrated to Vancouver in 1964, and he became a boat-builder of repute as well as a skipper of off-shore racing yachts. When the veterans team toured British Columbia in 1989, David joined the team as an extra player. He attended the club Annual prize giving dinner four years ago where he swapped a few yarns with Scott Chislett. Sadly, his health failed in his latter years and, after a fall, he died very shortly afterwards. He was a class act, and among his friends this side of the pond, he will be sorely missed.
I also learnt from Richard Llewellyn that Tim Simpkins suffered a fall recently and is not very well. We wish Tim well and a speedy recovery.
Thank you for your attendance today and lets us all look forward to an enjoyable game of rugby.Doug Warren, President.

n 1991 the Club appointed former England and Wasps prop Paul ‘The Judge’ Rendall and that season the Club reached the semi
final of the National Junior Cup, losing to Bradford Salem at Nottingham and in 1992/3 gained promotion to Southern Counties.
At the beginning of 1995/6 the Club toured Zimbabwe, gained promotion and secured its first Berkshire Cup, defeating
Maidenhead 22-21.
The years 1996-1999 saw three successive promotions to National 2 for the 1998/9 season. After just two seasons, the Club
gained promotion to N1 (level 2) for 2001/2, playing clubs such as Coventry , Moseley, Exeter, Rugby, Bedford, Rotherham,
Worcester, Otley and London Welsh. The Club was honoured with a Civic Reception given by Bracknell Forest Borough Council,
the Mayor presenting an inscribed memento, to mark the Club’s promotion to N1.
However, the dream of playing in N1 did not last long. Despite relegation to N2, the Club still had ambitions to move upwards
with the appointment of a new full time Director of Rugby but relegation to SWl followed.
In 2006/7, having lost six of its opening matches, Chris Sheasby was appointed player coach. The Club subsequently won eight
out of ten matches in the second half of the season and beat Maidenhead 51-14 in the Berkshire Cup. In 2007/8 Bracknell lost to
Worthing in the play off. The Club also lost to Birkenhead Park in the semi-final of the Intermediate Cup. In 2008/9 the Club again
lost in the play-offs this time to Barnes but won the Berkshire Cup, defeating Redingensians 41-22.
For 2009/0 the Club played in National 3 London & SE, finishing third behind Jersey and Old Albanians and retained the Berkshire
Cup defeating Broadmoor Staff 74-10.
In 2010/1 Bracknell finished fifth in National 3 London & SE but were relegated the following season (2011/2) moving to SW1E for
2012/3. The Club appointed Rory Greenslade-Jones as club coach and the 1st XV won SW1E at the first attempt. In 2013/4, they
finished third in N3SW and won the Berkshire Cup, defeating Maidenhead 41-17. 2014/5 was Bracknell’s Diamond Jubilee and
Club president, Jonathan Dance, was elected RFU President at the RFU’s annual general meeting in July 2014.
