This month we chat to up and coming folk-rockers Brother & Bones ahead of their UK tour, we say hi to local rockers Death of an Artist and ask dumbass questions to Mallory Knox. NEWSAfter 16 years, the last ever Sliky event at the O2, Bournemouth is set for October 5th and it sold out in a record 4 days. Set up way back in the late nineties, the current and final brand manager Lee Haslam answers a few questions about how he got involved with the brand and why it’s time to call it a day.

How did you originally get involved with Slinky’s?

I was then approached by the owners of the Slinky brand in 2007, which at the time was running in smaller club spaces and in my opinion a shadow of its former self. I came on board to help them get the brand back to mar-ket at the O2 and I am happy to report, for the most part, we succeeded. Soon after that came the record label, the weekly podcasts and I am proud to say we were the first dance music brand that had an iPhone app!

So why is Slinky ending?

In the current economic climate these events do not make financial sense. I know this may come as a shock to some people but its the truth and any promoter out there will tell you how hard it is. I run the events, the label and everything in between. Of course I have a few helpers and they get paid on an event by event basis but most of the money made from our events covers previous investments and wages not to mention deposits and

In 2010, the owners said they wanted to focus on their other businesses so Slinky nearly ended then but they gave me the option to run it under my own steam and I am glad they did. I love Slinky with a passion just like everyone else and I shouldered the risk, so when the events made a profit, investors got their return and I got a nominal wage for all the hours I put in but when the events made a loss, it came out of my pocket. Most shows we did broke even or made an ok profit, but when you’re doing 250 + hours on an event and quite rightly splitting profits with investors and owners, your basically working for not a lot, however you crunch it. Yes we’ve had the occasional sell out and successful event, but too infrequently for it to continue. Put it this way, if people supported our events like they have for the Send Off, then we wouldn’t be having this conversation. a shame but its a fact.

So what’s next?

I am now looking for the next venture so watch this space.

The current Bournemouth music scene is bursting at the seams with an eclectic choice of a huge variety of music covering many genres in venues all across the region. If you wanted to go to a gig everyday of the week this could easily be achieved by checking out the local gig guides as to what is on offer. The venues range from local pubs putting on tribute bands and open mic nights to dedicated venues hosting touring bands. w w w . r o c k - r e g e n e r a t i o n . c o . u k

If your tastes is anchored within the rock/metal genre you could do no better that check out any of the following great bands Sansara, Walk The Night, Saints Of Sin, Western Sand and of course the mighty Voodoo Vegas who all regularly can be found performing in the area.

There is also a broad selection of folk music of all styles worth looking up with bands like Willowen, The Jack Ratts, Pronghorn, Lady Winwood’s Maggot, Fearne, Thirstyman and The Jimmy Hill Billies. If punk pop is your thing then check Escape from ‘98, Escape December, 9 Left Behind and Pump Action Radio. There are also plenty of impressive indie bands who come in the form of Empire Affair, Draw Me Ugly, Sirpico, Yellowgroove, Hooligan Choir, Peace, Love & Gloves and The Frequency. Bournemouth is also home to a huge amount of supremely talented solo acoustic artists such as Si Genaro, Jack Grace, Andy Stock, Dan Gordon, Alex Roberts, Hanah Robinson, Charlie Hole and that is just the tip of the iceberg. Venues such as Mr Kyps, The Winchester, Chaplin’s, The Anvil and the Sound Circus play host to a lot of the mentioned artists and normally for just a couple of pounds and even sometimes for free you can see a showcase of several bands all performing in one night.

September brings us towards the end of the summer festival season and there is no chance the pace slowing down in Bournemouth as there are two must see great outdoor events arranged to end the festival season with a bang. The first is ‘Party In The Park’ in Ashley Cross, a two date event that takes place in a beautiful shady park with 10 local bands costing just a fiver for the whole weekend. The next is the Boscombe Community Fair which this year celebrates it’s 18th Birthday with a three day, two stage event in King Parks with entry just a tenner for all three days. There is also a dedicated local music radio show called ‘Live Wire Live’ on Hope FM 90.1 hosted by myself and Tim Heywood. Each week we have regular guests from the local music scene performing live in the studio. 2013 has been a busy year for British 5 piece Brother & Bones; two headline tours, a new EP, a summer packed full of festival shows and their first venture over to the USA. Next month they’re coming to stay with us on the south coast for gigs in Southampton, Portsmouth & Bournemouth so we thought we’d catch up with them and see what they’ve got in store for us.

So, the new EP is due out imminently, what can we expect?

Rich: Yeah, the new EP is out in Autumn. We’re really proud of it. It was recorded in a studio in Wales which was a really good experience for us as it was the first time we’ve had the right space, especially for recording drums, where we can record live but still have a good, roomy sound that’s really natural. We’ve produced it ourselves too so there’s a lot of our personality in there. There’s definitely some big, epic moments as well as some really intimate moments with a live track that we did which is just piano and a stripped back arrangement so there’s a bit of everything in there.

We know your live shows are pretty special, how do you manage to capture that in a recording?

Yiannis: This is the dilemma we’ve been having. In the past what we’ve done is try and replicate what we’ve done live on record but I think it’s transpired that’s actually a lot harder to do because you’re never going to capture exactly what you do live on a record…because it’s a record. So with this recording we’ve been using different textures and trying to think of it as two different entities; live and recording and take it to the next level with experimenting and trying new things.

You’re very much a self-made band, having achieved so much already through your own determination, how did you get started and how did the band come together as a unit?

Rich: I suppose we started how a lot of bands started. I’ve known Rob for years and years; we’ve played music to-gether a lot. I knew James for years from him playing in a rock band, watching him play guitar in the same venues and then I got introduced to Yiannis and Si through mutual friends.

James: It was quite natural wasn’t it, really? We got together, it worked well live so it kind of grew from there. It be-came much more of a business or much more of a reality when we actually started doing gigs together….

Robin: We’re a business?

James: Well, you know, the fact that we thought, actually this works quitewell, let’s take it seriously, rather than just for fun.

Yiannis: And the fact that we’ve got to where we are just by hard grafting ourselves means we have had to treat it like a bit of a business in a way, where everyone’s got their roles...James does everything!

FEATURE It’s been a pretty hectic summer, full of festivals – any particular highlights or stand out favourites?

Si: Yeah, this summer we went to Ride Festival in Colorado, which was 10,000ft up in the mountains. Beautiful scenery – we got invited out there and it was a fantastic experience for us all.

Is America somewhere you want more experience of?

All: Yeah!

Rich: Definitely, it was amazing. The fact that we were out there in the first place was due to complete luck that the festival organiser found us on YouTube. So to be the only British band on the line up and to play with some real leg-ends was incredible. We got to meet quite a few people and everyone was really humble and really welcoming. So we saw some great music and just had a ball!

James: I think it was really great playing in America as, no questions asked they seemed to get our style of music. It was amazing to go somewhere fresh for the first time and get that kind of reception. So definitely from that experi-ence, we’re all massively keen to get back out to America.

What’s your ultimate show goal? The one that marks the ‘yeah, we’ve made it’ point?

Yiannis: Glastonbury, gotta be, hasn’t it?

Rich: Yeah, Glastonbury. You can’t NOT want to play Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, that’s just impossible. Big stages work really well for us so Coachella, Benicassim, Glasto; they’re all the ones we want to go and play because it would be amazing.

James: With regards to venues, we’ve always talked about Jools Holland. I think that really would mark it, I suppose more for music lovers and critics and ourselves…..just to be asked.

Yiannis: I think that when you’re in that position where you’ve got a room full of 10,000 people or whatever and you know that they’re there to see you…. I think, for me that would be a massive changing point.

Rich: As for support, if Zeppelin ever did another reunion gig, imagine getting the support on that show. I think I’d have a meltdown!

James: Can you imagine?!? I think that would probably be the only time we’d ever get stage fright!

Rich: I would be sh**ting myself.

Are there plans for a full length album soon?

Rich: No. We don’t do albums. We ONLY do EP’s. We have 99 EP’s ready to come now. You can have them one by one. One per year!! (ha ha)

Robin: This EP, if it comes out the way we think it’s going to come out it will definitely speed up that process so I don’t think it’s going to be too long, given that this is the blueprint to how we want to approach it.

The ‘Brookes Brothers’, or Phil and Dan to their mates, have emerged as one of the major break-through drum n bass artists of recent years. They hold residencies in both Fabric and Herbal night-clubs, playing regular national and international DJ sets and this month they’re coming to Bournemouth!

Formed in 1999, UK gospel-reggae band Dubheart have made a name for themselves supporting artists such as The Wailers, Vibronics & Don Letts. With evident influences from classic 70s sounds to modern JA/US sounds as well as heavy steppin’ UK sounds Dubheart continues to deliver original live roots music to those who still want to hear heavyweight positive vibes!

Shlomo is known for pioneering original beatboxing techniques including his 2-mic trancebox routine which won him widespread respect in the international beatbox community. He has worked with artists such as Björk and his own hip hop crew Foreign Beggars and is a must see for anyone intrigued by the magical things that can be achieved by the human vocal chords!

We were bowled over by The Ramona Flowers when we caught them supporting Bastille earlier this year. Combining elements of both rock and electro but not quite fitting into the traditional electro-rock mould, get in to see these guys now and expect them all over the festival season in 2014!

Described as ‘the most sophisticated drugs baron of all time’, Howard Marks has worked with the British Secret Service and has been connected with the Mafia, the IRA, MI6 and the CIA. This is a BRAND NEW SHOW for 2013 and Mr Kyps has the opening night which will feature funny anecdotes, terrifying tales and as much cunning as the proverbial fox.

Introduce yourselves – who are you and what do you do in the band? Ross, and I play bass. If you had to create a genre name for your music, what would it be? Pop-Metal-Post-Post-Hardcore-Fusion? I guess, we just play what we like to listen to! Who or what gave you your first musical inspira-tion? Personally, probably Queen and Meat Loaf as that is all my Dad ever played, until Robbie Williams went solo… But as a band, Underoath and Alexi-sonfire were the main influences to start the band. If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would you choose? Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards! What’s your favourite midnight snack? Two pizzas What’s playing on your Ipod/in your car stereo RIGHT NOW? Bruno Mars, Jimmy Eat World and Hot Water Music currently What makes playing a hometown gig so special? Getting to play to our friends and family is always great, but the shows have just gotten bigger and bigger, and we’ve been making more fans and new friends and it just makes the shows a lot more fun and always a memorable experience! You can never beat a hometown show. Our local crowd are always up for it and always involved in the show from the first notes. Why should we come and check out your live show? We love to play live. We put our all into our shows and practise hard to ensure it comes across. We want everyone to leave sweaty and smiling.

ZAN LAWTHER

Death of an Artist first hit the local scene with their own brand of melodic/post-hardcore music in April 2009. By 2010 the band’s sound had progressed to a heavier, epic plane, taking influences from Underoath, Saosin, Emarosa, Thrice, and Alexisonfire.

Their first release, the ‘Clarity of the Collective’ EP was recorded with Dan Lancaster at Studio Glasseye, with their debut album ‘X’, self released in June 2012, being recorded and produced with Neil Kennedy at The Ranch in Southampton.

Summer 2012 saw the introduction of ex Viatrophy bassist Gav Thane as the bands new guitarist. Swiftly followed by a hugely successful hometown album release show for “X” and glowing reviews from the UK press. Since then the band have shares the stage with such luminaries as Deaf Havana, Yashin, and Lower Than Atlantis.

This year has seen more changes to the line up with introduction of drummer Tim Reynolds and departure of Ross on bass. Gav made the switch back to bass and the band are on the hunt for a new guitarist. But far from slowing the band down, Death of an Artist have hit 2013 running. With a successful headline run at the start of the year the band are pressing forward with tours and looking forward to the summer festival season and a new EP to write and release in the process.
