Thank you for your interest in the role of Director of Marketing & Communications at Bournemouth University.

BU is building an excellent reputation in the sector and is ranked in the top 200 young universities in the world, according to the current Times Higher Education World University Rankings. We are now seeking an exceptional and strategic leader to develop and enhance our profile and reputation at home and internationally.

As a member of the University Leadership Team, the new director will collaborate across the University to achieve the aims of BU2025, our strategic vision and plan can be viewed on our website here.

We have a great story to tell about our next stage of development that follows a sustained period of investment in our staff, our infrastructure and facilities and in developing a collaborative and high performing team-based culture.

Our teaching quality was awarded Silver in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and we have a reputation for producing graduates ready to embark on a wide range of careers, including future Oscar and BAFTA winners, healthcare professionals, leading designers and cyber security experts. Last year our Business School was awarded accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) after a rigorous accreditation process.

In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), 96% of BU research was rated as internationally recognised or higher, with 18% ranked as world-leading (REF 2014). As we approach the next REF in 2021, our communications will be key to showcasing the wide range of new BU research that impacts society, and to launching our exciting new strategic investment areas.

As the new director, you will join BU as our transformational estates and IT programmes are changing the face of the University. We are investing £350m between 2012 and 2025 in our estate and digital infrastructure including our two new ‘Gateway’ buildings, which will provide modern teaching resources and social collaborative learning spaces for students and staff.

With a government review of funding for HE underway and a tumultuous external environment, there will be plenty of new challenges to meet, while leading an exceptional and award winning marketing and communications team.

This is a very exciting time to join BU and take our marketing and communications to the next level of success.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Jim Andrews Chief Operating Officer

BU2025 is our strategic plan for Bournemouth University. Our vision is to be recognised worldwide as a leading university for inspiring learning, advancing knowledge and enriching society through the fusion of education, research and professional practice.

Our Fusion model is at the heart of BU2025 and brings together education, research and practice, which have been core parts of our DNA throughout our history and can be traced back to the early 1900’s. Our values are excellence, inclusivity, creativity and responsibility.

Inspiring learning: We will continue to establish our distinctive Fusion culture and communities and build a worldwide reputation for our Fusion approach to learning. Key features of our approach include co-creation, collaboration and inclusivity. By developing our learning communities we will ensure that the BU learning experience, for staff as well as students, is personalised, inter-disciplinary and consistently excellent. We will continue to build our diverse and inclusive environment so that it enables achievement for all.

Advancing knowledge: The Fusion of education, research and practice enables us to advance knowledge through research and education that is informed by industry and practice and to contribute to the development of professional practice though our relationships. We will be a catalyst for impact by advancing knowledge, creativity and innovation. Our students and staff will thrive as life-long learners. We will continue to develop staff who will lead in their disciplines and professions.

Enriching society: We will have an impact on challenges facing society, at home and worldwide, building partnerships and connectivity. Our students, graduates and staff will continue to be active citizens in their communities within and outside BU. Our education, research and practice will drive social and economic growth and development. Managing our own impact on the environment, and contributing to thought leadership in this area, is one way that we will make a difference. BU2025 sets out the actions that we will take to achieve our vision and the outcomes that will define our success.

See how far we have come since the launch of our previous strategy BU2012-2018.

Bournemouth University has more than 20,000 students and 1,600 staff. Located over two sites, the University is structured around our academic disciplines in four faculties: Faculty of Science & Technology, Faculty of Management, Faculty of Media & Communication and Faculty of Health & Social Sciences.

BU is an inclusive, forward looking and ambitious university, with an exciting and developing international profile. Over the next seven years of BU2025 we will embed our Fusion model and build strength and critical mass in four strategic investment areas which have been identified to meet future societal and global needs. These are: Medical Sciences; Animation, Simulation and Visualisation; Assistive Technologies and Sustainability & Low Carbon Technology.

BU plays a leading role in the local economy, contributing over £1 million per day to the south west region and we have a number of key partnerships. These include the Dorset CCG, looking at innovation in health care provision and with Premier League football club AFC Bournemouth, bringing student opportunities, collaboration and exposure at a regional, national and international level.

All our activities are aligned to the UN sustainable development goals. We are #BUProud to have held the EcoCampus platinum award for our work in making the university sustainable since 2011 and we have just been ranked 55th out of 450 universities worldwide in the new Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2019 – which measure universities against the UN’s sustainable development goals.

Bournemouth University benefits from a wonderful location, situated between one of the UK’s newest national parks, officially the best beach in Britain (according to Trip Advisor, 2019) and the second largest natural harbour in the world, with the World Heritage Jurassic Coast located nearby.

The favourable climate, good schools, a wide range of culture and festivals, as well as good links to London and abroad all make Dorset a great place to live and work with varied choices across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole and the wider Dorset region.

Every undergraduate degree student at BU has the opportunity to undertake a work placement as part of their course. BU has a long established programme of placements for students both nationally and internationally and has a reputation for the quality of these opportunities.

Our latest alumni survey found that 96% of undergraduates would recommend BU as a great place to study and live. ‘My Time at BU’ was made by M&C to capture students’ reflections of their BU student experience.
