DirkseOi (R; 111.) called today for tha administration to take a tougher line in the United Nations to get It "back on the track." Jt W t/f DIRKSEN, 1TBCB senate Re- publican leader, predicted con- gress will ire-examine U.S. con- tributions to the United Nations in the light events,'in The Congo and Goa and the failure of some other nations to pay their assessments- He told a news conference he was disturbed by what he called India's aggression In Goa, adding India has forfeited its moral statute by what was done there." Dlrksen also criticized the UN military" action against President Molse Tshombe's Katanga pro- vince. He said the foundation will be laid for a take-over by leftist Antolne Giaenga and his Soviet supporters "if you clobber Katanga." •a v *SOME EFFORT should be made to get the United Nations back on the track to serve the purpose for which It was intend- ed," Dlrksen contended. "Per- haps a tougher line by this country may be the answer. Our representatives could do a little tougher talking." He praised U. S. Ambassador Adlai E. Stevenson's fight against Red China's admission to the United Nations as the kind of "good tough statement" he had In mind for other UN problems. Turning to domestic matters, Dirksen voiced belief that public sentiment has not yet crystalized for or against President Ken- nedy's plea .for broader authority to reduce tariffs to boost foreign trade. # 4f * HE NOTED that the adminis- tration has not yet proposed its specific legislation to extend the reciprocal trade agreements pro- gram and* said he has not yet decided on his own stand. "You've got to see the facts," te said. "I don't know what escapes may be provided. If a manufacturer can prove damage, where does he go for help? What wll be proposed about retraining of displaced workers? You get a diversity of interests in problems of this kind and you have to know what defenses might be built up." Shriver Urges Prudent Pens ANNOUNCEMENTS NEW YORK, Dec. 7 (UPD— Peace Corps Director R. Sargent Shriver flew^bere from Washing- ton today to see 39 volunteer teachers leave by plane for Nigeria. He asked them to be prudent about what they write home. Shriver told the corpsmen their mission to Nigeria had "partic- ular significance." He referred to the "postcard incident" of several months ago for which the Peace Corps was severely criticized in Nigeria and in the United States. The incident arose when the contents of a postcard written by Peace Corps' member Margery Michelmore, who expressed shock over Nigerian living conditions, was publicized. Shriver urged the corpsmen to- day to "be prudent about what you write home and always be aware that you write may be publicized" CITATION PR045F OF WILL THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW TCORK, By the Grace of God. WASHINGTON,* Dec. 2 f (AP) — Senator pverett M. DirkseOi (R; 111.) called today for tha administration to take a tougher line in the United Nations to get It "back on the track."

J t W t/f

DIRKSEN, 1TBCB senate Republican leader, predicted congress will ire-examine U.S. contributions to the United Nations in the light o£ events,'in The Congo and Goa and the failure of some other nations to pay their assessments-

He told a news conference he was disturbed by what he called India's aggression In Goa, adding India has forfeited its moral

statute by what was done there." Dlrksen also criticized the UN

military" action against President Molse Tshombe's Katanga province. He said the foundation will be laid for a take-over by leftist Antolne Giaenga and his Soviet supporters "if you clobber Katanga."

• • •av

*SOME EFFORT should be made to get the United Nations back on the track to serve the purpose for which It was intended," Dlrksen contended. "Perhaps a tougher line by this country may be the answer. Our representatives could do a little tougher talking."

He praised U. S. Ambassador Adlai E. Stevenson's fight against Red China's admission to the United Nations as the kind of "good tough statement" he had In mind for other UN problems.

Turning to domestic matters, Dirksen voiced belief that public sentiment has not yet crystalized for or against President Kennedy's plea .for broader authority to reduce tariffs to boost foreign trade.

# 4f * HE NOTED that the adminis

tration has not yet proposed its specific legislation to extend the reciprocal trade agreements program and* said he has not yet decided on his own stand.

"You've got to see the facts," t e said. "I don't know what escapes may be provided. If a manufacturer can prove damage, where does he go for help? What wll be proposed about retraining of displaced workers? You get a diversity of interests in problems of this kind and you have to know what defenses might be built up."
