S Box of Tricks is a new writing theatre

company committed to developing and

producing the best new work around;

discovering, nurturing and promoting the next

generation of playwrights. We are drawn to

plays that have an immediacy and relevance

today: the stories that need to be told, the

voices that need to be heard.

We have produced critically-acclaimed work on

the London stage and are establishing a regional

presence in the UK, exposing new writing to the

widest possible audience.

Over the last four years, our work to date

comprises various critically-acclaimed London

productions, including: Letting in Air (

WhatsOnStage), Streetlights and Shadows

( Time Out Critics’ Choice: Show of the

Week), Whispering Happiness (“intensely de-

lightful” – Telegraph ) and Word:Play 2

( Remote Goat).

In 2010, we took new work to the Pulse Fringe

Festival in Ipswich, Latitude Festival in Suffolk

and to the Nu:Write Festival in Zagreb, Croatia.

S We continue to forge relationships with

emerging talent and to develop the plays of

the future through our New Tricks readings

and our unique Word:Play initiative (“one word,

six new plays”).

Playwrights we’ve worked with to date include:

Ali Taylor (Meyer Whitworth Award; Overspill –

winner of Metamorphosis 08 – at Soho; Cotton

Wool at Theatre503), Kenneth Emson (Old Vic

New Voices’ 24 Hour Plays 08 and US/UK

Exchange 09; winner of the Arundel Festival’s

Joy Goun Award), Becky Prestwich (nominated

and shortlisted for Pearson Playwright Scheme

2009; developing work with the Manchester

Library Theatre), Jacqueline McCarrick

(Mushroom Pickers at Southwark Playhouse and

in New York) and Leo Richardson (BBC pilots

and Sh*tmix at the Trafalgar Studios in the West

End).

We have an active and complementary

education programme delivering workshops

that inspire future generations to engage with

theatre hands-on, and to use it as a vehicle of

self- expression and exploration.

As a company, we are continually looking

forward, seeking new challenges and scaling

new heights; bringing the next generation of

new writing to the stage today.

Playwright Scheme 2009

"You shouldn't keep secrets. Secrets keep you

up at night. They stop you sleeping."

Adam and his father have never been close. For

Adam, Manchester is the sprung dancefloor at

the Ritz and cider on the 42; for Frank, gaslights

and cobbled streets.

In the wake of his mother’s death, Adam returns

to Manchester with his girlfriend, promising a

fresh start. But when Amy, a teenage girl with a

troubled past, strikes up an unlikely friendship

with his father, unspoken tensions

reemerge. Family bonds are tested and secrets

refuse to remain hidden as Manchester

becomes a whole new city.

Following the success of Streetlights and

Shadows, Becky Prestwich's Letting in Air is a

lyrical family drama about the ones we love and

the secrets we keep.

"Polished, gutsy production from director

Hannah Tyrrell-Pinder. Against the wonderful

darkening sky of Georgia Lowe's gangland-

estate set, a dilapidated tramp and two bicker-

ing teens hunt for happiness... Beautifully abra-

sive, visceral production... Stupendous cast."

Time Out

"Kenneth Emson’s latest offering, Whispering

Happiness is a lyrical tale sheathed in modern

urban destruction… Lovely moments... Thought-

provoking." Telegraph

moments that will hit theatrical nerve-endings.”

World première of

Whispering Happiness by Kenneth Emson

"Come closer. Some things should only be

whispered..."

Two teenagers sit in a desolate playground as

the city tears itself apart. An old tramp waits in

an empty church, while the gangs stalk the

streets for their next fix.

Into this wasteland of crumbling tower blocks, a

shadowy figure appears, promising

happiness. But at what price?

A political play of personal journeys, Whispering

Happiness is a lyrical and provocative urban

fairytale that explores the choices we face when

society is in freefall.

Captain of the School Football Team by Kenneth Emson

"The universe stops for everyone. Everyone except

one."

Amid the prefect badges, school blazers and empty

B&H packets, a secret lurks that will send shivers

down the spine of a small community. Kev goes out

with Lisa, Lisa lives down the same road as Jack, Jack

hangs out with Ben.

But on a warm sunny day, when they should have

been at school, events take a darker turn and it’s no

longer just a laugh. A dark, lyrical tale of teenage

tragedy, The Captain of the School Football Team is

a dizzying journey through the irrevocable events of

one summer’s day.

strangers. Until one day, one call shatters his

"We kick (or rather, push) off with Kenneth

Emson's 'Shove'… A promisingly intriguing start

and an engaging performance by Simon

Darwen… Hannah Nicklin's 'Awake'… neatly

engages in a poignant argument... aided by a

terrific performance from Gunnarsson, evoking

the spirit of a Jean-Pierre Jeunet hero. [In

'Struck by Love/Train', Natasha] James has great

fun with Evan Placey's witty and poetic script…

We end with Marcelo Dos Santos' 'Safety'… Dos

Santos marries Pinter with Philip Ridley in a

uniquely beguiling manner and the cast are

excellent… Box of Tricks' evening is certainly

interesting, even fascinating at times."

Six world premières

Word:Play 3 One word, six new plays

WORD:PLAY is back! For one week only, Box of

Tricks returns to Theatre503 with six brand

new plays inspired by a single word.

Following the critically-acclaimed sell-out

success of Word:Play 2, Box of Tricks has

commissioned six new playwrights to write a

fifteen-minute play inspired by a single word;

for this cycle, “obsession”.

We’ve assembled some of the hottest emerging

talent to rise to this unique creative challenge:

six playwrights, who between them have

already won a clutch of awards and accolades;

including OffWestEnd's Adopt a Playwright

Award, the Kings Cross Award, Best New

Writing at the Lost Festival, winner of the Off

Cut Festival, the Old Vic New Voices' 24 Hour

Plays and US/UK Exchange and the Royal Court

Young Writers' Programme.

"One of the most thoughtful, tricky and

interesting plays in the programme. It's co-

written by three talented emerging writers...

The sharpness and specificity of the writing are

hugely impressive... The effective direction from

Adam Quayle and Hannah Tyrrell-Pinder keeps

things simple, and it's very confidently

performed... It took some courage from these

writers to tackle this theme: it's paid

dividends."

British Theatre Guide (Latitude 2010)

"There’s irony also in the triple-authored True

Love Waits in which three women write to a

man on Death Row... It’s short and intensely

gripping."

Whats On Stage (Pulse Fringe 2010)

"Three interwoven monologues that gel per-

fectly... It’s a clever concept and one that is de-

livered with skill by Box of Tricks... Abi Hood,

Natasha James and Rowena Lennon deliver

gripping performances, making each pen-pal a

thoroughly believable character. The three

interwoven story arcs overlap perfectly and

move to a surprising and moving climax. This is

a world premiere but this assured production

will hopefully go onto wider success."

World première of

True Love Waits By Kenneth Emson, Marcelo Dos Santos and

Evan Placey

"I can’t talk about these things with anyone

else. You’re my priest."

Daniel is a convicted murderer on Death Row.

Alice is his neurotic girlfriend.

Charlie is a 15-year-old girl from Reading.

Judith, a God-fearing mother.

They all write to Daniel. They all need Daniel.

But will true love wait?

An explosive comic drama for three voices, True

Love Waits fuses monologue and movement to

tell the story of three 'pen pals' approaching

personal crises. As they write to Daniel,

separate lives begin to interweave and collide,

and events take a darker turn.

A unique commission from three of the hottest

talents from the Royal Court's Young Writers'

Programme, True Love Waits is a darkly comic

journey through three women's lives and their

obsession with a serial killer.
