‘BOYHOOD’ LEADS GOLDEN GLOBE WINS January 16th, 2015 By Jovel Johnson
Transparent dominated in TV
Last Sunday night gave us a small taste of what the rest of the awards season might look like, with Boyhood living
up to its “favorite film of the year” status, showing us it’s all it’s cracked up to be. The film walked away from the
night’s happenings with three Golden Globes in top categories: Best Director (Richard Linklater), Best Supporting
Actress – Drama (Patricia Arquette), and Best Motion Picture.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted for the third and last time, and saying they didn’t pull any punches in their
opening monologue would be an understatement. Aside from the usual Hollywood commentary and ribbing, they
decided to put their two cents into the bizarre happenings of the Bill Cosby saga with some rather awkward jokes,
poking fun at the comedy legend. Those jokes were met with mixed reactions, but what caused more of a
controversy was the running gag featuring comedianne Margaret Cho, who poked fun at the whole Sony/The
Interview debacle, dressed in North Korean military attire, pretending to be a part of the country’s army. There
were a few laughs from the audience, but whether it was in good taste or not was ultimately left up to public
opinion.
There were a few highlights among the winners, showing us that the Hollywood Foreign Press loves to award
underdogs. Online streaming’s new show, Transparent made a huge splash when it took home two main awards
– Best Actor in a Television Series (Comedy) for Jeffrey Tambor, and Best TV Series (Comedy). This is the first
show produced by Amazon Studios to get a major award. Speaking of firsts, The CW network also got to dip their
toes into the “first time” pool with their show Jane The Virgin, garnering a surprising Best Actress in a TV comedy
award for Gina Rodriguez, who revelled in her Cinderella moment. “My father used to tell me to say every
morning, ‘Today is going to be a great day. I can and will.’ Well, Dad today is a great day. I can, and I did.”
Jeffrey Tambor accepts his Best Actor in a TV Series (Comedy) award for ‘Transparent’. The show also won for Best TV Series
(Comedy). (hollywoodreporter.com)
