MSU’s research focus areas are many, ranging from plant biotechnology to clean and alternative energy resources, to carbon sequestration and high temperature electrochemistry.
Hands-on opportunities make MSU a leader in the number of prestigious Goldwater Scholarships won for undergraduate excellence in science and math. Faculty also take advantage of the ability to conduct pioneering research in a unique learning environment. MSU faculty are recipients of National Science Career Awards, Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), Fulbright grants, a Technology Review magazine “Young Innovator” award and a McArthur Foundation Award.
The integration of learning and discovery is a hallmark of the undergraduate experience at Montana State University. With outdoor laboratories in nearby Yellowstone National Park, MSU students have ample opportunities to pursue exciting projects throughout their college careers. The center of campus life is the Student Union Building, which includes many study and meeting rooms, restaurants, a large bookstore, a bank, recreation center, theater and a full-service health clinic. The MSU campus has more than 175 active student organizations and hosts many cultural events, including concerts, lectures and films.
An extensive gymnasium complex provides a swimming pool, tennis and racquetball courts, a fitness center and intramural team sports for students, faculty and staff. The unique Outdoor Recreation Center leads students on adventurous camping, skiing and boating trips around the western U.S. and teaches outdoor skills like rock climbing. MSU’s men’s and women’s athletic teams compete in the Big Sky Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division I, and use the bobcat as team mascot.

H O U S I N G FAC I L I T I E SConvenient, on-campus housing is available with a choice of 10 residence halls for undergraduate students which provide students with a healthy environment as they navigate through their academic career. On-going social activities and educational programming opportunities assist students as they make the transition to college life. Professional Resident Directors, Hall Front Desk Program Assistants, Resident Advisors, and a Central Administration Staff work to ensure students are provided with everything from basic amenities to networking opportunities with a diverse group of individuals.
Students have the opportunity to eat in three dining facilities across campus. Miller, Harrison and Hannon Dining halls are locally owned and operated, guaranteeing excellent customer service and a wide variety of meal choices, ethnic cuisine and vegetarian offerings. Students may choose between seven and five-day meal plans. Both plans allow unlimited entry and unlimited food in the dining rooms between 7am and 7pm.
Other on-campus convenient housing includes 620 apartment units and houses for students with families and for graduate students. On-campus housing offers reasonable rental rates compared to those in the surrounding area and provides a safe and friendly community-based environment for its residents. A 24-hour staff is available to answer questions and for emergencies. Throughout the year, Family and Graduate Housing organizes children’s activities and educational workshops for its residents.

MSU is a globally engaged university, maintaining active partnerships with more than 50 universities worldwide. The Office of International Programs (OIP) manages these partnerships; offers a wide array of study abroad programs; provides services for international students, scholars and sponsoring organizations; supports international curricular development and builds customized training programs. The annual International Street Food Bazaar, International Children’s Festival and International Education Week are exciting events produced by OIP for the campus and community.
MSU students have the opportunity to choose from 250 different study abroad options in 52 countries. The variety of study abroad programs includes semester or year-long direct exchange opportunities at international partner universities, as well as programs during the summer months. In addition to the direct exchanges, programs are offered through both the College Consortium of International Studies (CCIS) and International Student Exchange Programs (ISEP), giving students even more opportunities to study abroad.
MSU enrolls over 600 international students from 73 different countries. International applicants receive personalized assistance through the admission process and pre- and post-arrival support services. A team of experienced and dedicated advisors assists students and scholars with immigration regulations, academic and personal advising.
The Training and Special Programs Division of OIP specializes in the design and administration of high-quality training programs. Over the past decade, fully customizable programs have served hundreds of international participants, among them students, scholars, educators, and other career professionals selected by various universities or governmental organizations.

A place of great beauty, Bozeman is surrounded by mountain ranges and rivers, clean air and starry skies. The surrounding area offers many outdoor recreation opportunities throughout the four seasons.
The 45-mile “Main Street to the Mountains” trail system for biking, hiking and skiing weaves through Bozeman’s neighborhoods and makes Bozeman easily navigable for residents and visitors.
