INTRODUCTION

Bharat Pumps and compressors Ltd. (BPCL) (A Public Sector Undertaking under the control of Ministry of

Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, Govt. of India), was set up in the year 1970 at naini, Allahabad as an

import substitution unit for manufacture of sophisticated process pumps and compressors for core sector

industries, which were hitherto being imported by them. The company is engaged in manufacture and supply

of heavy duty pumps & compressors and high pressure seamless and CNG gas cylinders / cascades to cater the

needs of oil exploration & exploitation, refineries, petro-chemicals, chemicals, fertilizer and down stream

industries.

PUMPS INTRODUCTIONA Pump is a device that expands energy to raise ,transport ,or compress fluids-liquids and gases. The term pump is generally used

For liquid handling or hand operated device ,while the term compressor is used when the pressure of gas is increased in motor

driven machine.

Pump is a machine intended to raise the pressure of an incompressible fluid using mechanical energy from an external source

that is a driver.

CLASSIFICATION OF PUMPS

Under the system, all pumps may be derived into two major categories.

1. Dynamic In which the energy is continuously added to increase the fluid velocities within the machine to values

in excess of those occurring at the discharge such that subsequent velocity reduction within or beyond

the pump produces pressure increase.

2.Displacement In which energy is periodically added by application of force to one or more movable boundaries of any

desired no. of enclosed, fluid containing volumes, resulting in direct increase in pressure upto the value

required to move the fluid through valve or ports into the discharge line .

CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS

The pump which work on the centrifugal action of working fluid is known as centrifugal pump. It consist fundamentally of

Rotating element, called an impeller, and a casing. Liquid is led through the eye or center of the impeller and is set into

rotation by the impeller vanes. By virtue of centrifugal force the liquid is thrown from the rim or periphery of the impeller

With a considerable velocity and pressure. The casing, which closely surrounds the impeller, has a volute shaped passage

of increasing area, which collects the liquid leaving the impeller, and converts a portion of its velocity energy into additional

Pressure energy.

Page 6: bpcl

CLASSIFICATION OF CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS

RADIAL FLOW : A centrifugal pump in which the pressure is developed wholly by the centrifugal force.

MIXED FLOW : A centrifugal pump in which the pressure is developed partially by centrifugal force and partially by the lift of the vanes of the impeller on the liquid.

AXIAL FLOW : A centrifugal pump in which the pressure is developed by the propelling or lifting action of the vanes of the impeller on the liquid.

BPC is manufacturing following different types of pumps:

Horizontal Radial split, Overhang design, Single & two stage

Horizontal Radial split, both end supported, Single & two stage

Horizontal Axial split, Single & two stage

Horizontal Axial split, Multi stage

RECIPROCATING PUMPS

BPC designs and manufactures custom built Reciprocating pumps conforming to API 674 latest editions available for

wide range of applications.

These are positive displacement pumps. These are classified as :

PLUNGER PUMPS : These are for making positive displacement of working fluid . These are used where low

discharge and high pressure head is required. Plungers have less cross section area and more

length.

e.g. A-346

PISTON PUMPS : These use pistons for making positive displacement of the working fluid. These are used where

high discharge and low pressure head.

e.g. A-850PT

COMPRESSORSThe company is engaged in manufacture and supply of heavy duty pumps & compressors and high pressure seamless

and CNG gas cylinders / cascades to cater the needs of oil exploration & exploitation, refineries, petro-chemicals, chemicals,

fertilizer and down stream industries.

CLASSIFICATION OF COMPRESSORS

Compressors are also classified as:

Reciprocating compressors

Centrifugal compressors

PUMPS AND COMPRESSORS PLANT [PCP] Pumps & compressors plant is the manufacturing section for the pump, compressors spare parts. PCP is divided as:

Pumps & compressors Manufacturing(PCM): This section mainly handles the assembly, testing, packing and dispatching of centrifugal pumps, reciprocating pumps and reciprocating compressors.

Feeder : This section consists of six bays. In this section all machining, fabrication and heat treatment operations are

carried out.

BAY- I : This place is said to be heavy machine shop. The machine available in the BAY-I are : 1. Vertical borer BV-25 2. Plano Milling 3. Horizontal boring Machine BFT-125 4. Cylindrical grinder BUA-63 5. Radial Drill RF-51 6. Radial Drill DR-3 7. Centre Lathe LC-100 8. Vertical Turret LC-100 9. Horizontal Boring Machine

Page 11: bpcl

BAY-2: This is a light machine shop which mainly contains Center Lathe, Production Lathe, Small size Radial Drilling machine, Boring machine and Turret lathe. In this shop mainly small size components like impeller

of centrifugal pumps and shaft keys, bushings cutting of connecting rod etc. are made.

BAY-3: This is Fabrication shop where for pumps and compressor are fabricated.

BAY-4: This shop has welding shop machine along with two main cutting machines.

1. Bend Saw Cutting Machine

2. Profile Cutting Machine

HEAT TREATMENT SHOP Heat treatment is done for getting desired mechanical properties in the material. There are following heat treatment operations:• Hardening• Tempering• Normalizing• Annealing• Surface hardening• Stress relieving• Solution annealing

GAS CYLINDER PLANT

The gas cylinder plant at BPCL, one of the most unique plant in country where both high pressure and low pressure

cylinder are manufactured. These are used for both domestic as well as industrial purposes.

Cylinder manufactured in gas cylinder plant are:-

1. Seamless gas cylinder

2. Welded gas cylinder

3. Liquefied petroleum gas cylinder

4. Porous mass plant

Seamless cylinders are made by two methods.

5. Closing the pipe end on CNC hot roller spinning machine.

6. Piercing billet to form shell and close the end on hot spinning machine.

CONCLUSION

BPCL has played a very crucial role in the development of India since its establishment in the year 1970. The products

Manufactured by BPCL are working as ‘Heart’ in many Oil and Nuclear concerns.

BPCL has the shortcomings of a Public sector for sure. This is why, in spite of having such a wide market & variety of

customers in demand ranging from different parts INDIA, it incurred losses in recent years.

But now, due to the various adequate & recovery measures taken by the management authorities, the losses have been

considerably reduced in recent years.

Presently, the company is looking forward to perform well on the near future and to compete hard with such other firms
