WITH the advent of modern smartphone technology and access to limitless informati on at their fi ngerti ps, we oft en hear parents and many of the older generati on commenti ng on how the youth of today have it much easier compared to themselves a mere 30, 20, even 10 years ago.

This limitless access, however, does not necessarily guarantee a bright future. To quote physicist William Pollard, “Informati on is a source of learning. But unless it is organised, processed, and available to the right people in a format for decision making, it is a burden, not a benefi t.”

It’s easy to take these freedoms for granted; just as it should be easier for our youths to mobilise themselves for social change and contribute to nati onal development.

They must improve. The way to this is through a sound educati on system.

A strong educati on system gives our youths the skills and knowledge as well as the resources and support to ensure a producti ve life which in turn ensures they have a chance at a successful and sustainable future.

Youths must be moti vated to go beyond just basic educati on and they must be insti lled with positi ve atti tudes.

They should be suffi ciently informed so they can make wise choices over their careers.

This year the Borneo Post Internati onal Educati on Fair brings professionals from the industry to speak on careers which we hope will give students and their parents a bett er insight as to what to pursue aft er SPM or STPM.

As Minister for Welfare, Women and Family Development who also has the Watching brief for Educati on in Sarawak, I strongly urge students, parents and teachers to take this opportunity to visit the Borneo Post Internati onal Educati on Fair (BPIEF) 2016 which showcases over 90 exhibitors and speak with the insti tuti ons representati ves.

THE recent changes in the JPA bursary awards have caused much anxiety and stress not only among the aff ected students and their parents, but undoubtedly, also among aspiring students for whom, and all those in the same situati on, such fi nancial study aid may mean the diff erence between an ordinary and a terti ary educati on.

In the light of the turn of events, we hope the Borneo Post Internati onal Educati on Fair (BPIEF) – where representati ves of universiti es, colleges, higher learning insti tuti ons and training centres come together to advise students and their parents on available studies and courses – can provide a fi tti ng platf orm to assist and benefi t all quarters concerned in the cause of higher educati on and development of human capital in the country.

BPIEF is now entering into its seventh year. No matt er how technology has advanced – even to the extent of bringing a copious reservoir of informati on within the reach of one simple mouse click – the advantages of having face-to-face discussions with experts in an educati on fair like BPIEF do oft en outweigh the appliances of faceless digital dialogue.

The Fair is an opportunity whereby students, parents and guardians can source for the best informati on with which to make a decision to shape the future, hence saving ti me and resources which would otherwise go to waste if a wrong study or course were chosen due to lack of informati on and knowledge.

BPIEF, in its own unique way, is acti ng as the bridge between the government that aspires to provide the people with quality educati on as well as informati on on choices of educati on and training programmes, and insti tuti ons of higher learning that strive to tap the socio-academic potenti al of students to the full under one roof.

It is organised with full knowledge of the fact that the ability to know what to expect in an increasingly competi ti ve world of educati on and learning is a vital quality a student should be imbued with.

We feel it is our corporate social responsibility to give back to society that has

been responsible for our present remarkable standing within the orbit of the print media in Sarawak and Sabah.

We are also thankful to the government of Sarawak, YB Datuk Hajah Fati mah Abdullah, Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development and BPIEF patron, the State Educati on Department and various quarters for their eff orts, assistance and advice in ensuring the success of the event year aft er year.

The Borneo Post would also like to extend its warmest welcome to all the exhibitors and visitors, and record with sincere thanks their support for yet another BPIEF endeavour that aspires to champion the cause of educati on state and nati onwide.

PHYLLIS WONGThe Borneo Post & Utusan Borneo Editorial Director/ General Operati ons ManagerBPIEF Advisor

We welcome you to the 7th editi on of Borneo Post Internati onal Educati on Fair (BPIEF), a CSR acti vity of Borneo Post for the people of Sarawak and neighbouring countries.

It has been a journey of many sorts as we bring together 92 reputable exhibitors under one roof at BCCK.

We are blessed with collaborators who have pitched in their ti me and eff ort to organise acti viti es and talks for the visitors especially the youths.

The BPIEF Committ ee takes this opportunity to express our heartf elt thanks and grati tude for the conti nuous support and guidance of our Patron the Honourable Datuk Hajah Fati mah Abdullah, the State Educati on Department, State Department for Women & Family, OurYouth.my, AZAM, SarawakYes! and iCube Innovati on.

We also thank the teachers, students, exhibitors, parents, volunteers as well as the various organisati ons that have provided feedback to improve this event.

We, at BPIEF, welcome new and returning exhibitors from public and private insti tuti ons both local and overseas.

We also thank the corporati ons who sponsored lucky draw prizes as well as gift bags.

Thank you.DORGE RAJAHBPIEF chairman

“Knowledge is power. Informati on is liberati ng. Educati on is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.” – Kofi Annan, 2001 Nobel Peace Prize winner.

All Malaysians must have equal access to educati on and the Sarawak State Educati on Department is adamant in emphasising this in its policies.

Getti ng an all-around educati on paves the way for our citi zens to build a progressive life for themselves and every citi zen should have this right.

Being educated gives students access to a world of possibiliti es as they acquire the confi dence and more importantly, the knowledge with which to pursue their futures.

The Sarawak State Educati on Department is tasked and fully committ ed to ensuring students are prepared for the challenges and right skills and mindset. Getti ng a terti ary educati on or skills training will enable them to face the numerous challenges that come with technological advancements, economic, environmental, politi cal and social advancements.

Students need informati on on the choices available as well as viable careers to choose from. Our Sarawak State Educati on counsellors are on hand at the Borneo Post Internati onal Educati on Fair to help and advise them on this aspect.

The wide variety of local, nati onal and internati onal insti tuti ons off ering formal and vocati onal training under one roof will provide much to choose from.

I urge students and parents to visit Borneo Post Internati onal Educati on Fair for the exposure and to look at the very wide range of choices and opti ons available for their terti ary educati on and skills training.
