At B&R, we are justifiably proud of our products, and we strive to ensure that you have what you need, when you need them. We have a network of offices and distributors throughout Australia and internationally. Wherever you are, you will be able to buy B&R products nearby.

B&R Enclosures was founded by Dick Bridges in 1955, specialising in sheet metal fabrication, including electrical enclosures for domestic metering applications. With little capital but great enthusiasm for operating his own business and a determination to succeed, Dick commenced operations in his backyard in Adelaide, South Australia.

It was this family determination that has sustained B&R’s growth into manufacturing plants in Brisbane, Adelaide and Sydney, 10 locations nationally and an international network of distributors, allowing them to increase the range, availability, quality and service to their customers.

Under the direction of the founder’s son, Ken and daughter, Chris, B&R Enclosures has grown to be the largest manufacturer of domestic, commercial and industrial enclosures in Australia.

brenclosures.com.au Hazardous Areas 13

What is a hazardous area?A hazardous area is an area where flammable liquids, vapours, gases or combustible dusts are likely to occur in sufficient quantities to cause fire or explosion. Industries such as metalliferous mining, oil and gas infrastructure, automotive refuelling stations, chemical processing plants, printing industries and cement works often have hazardous applications.

There are three basic conditions that must be satisfied to create a fireor explosion.1. Flammable or combustible material – such as flammable Liquid, vapour or

combustible dust must be present in sufficient quantity and concentration.2. Oxygen3. Ignition source

Hazardous area electrical equipment works by suppressing or separating one or more of these three components to avoid a fire or explosion.

Ignition SourcesThe following ignition sources have the potential to cause an explosion in the right circumstances:

• Electric arcs and spark• Flames• Hot surfaces• Electrostatic sparks• Thermite sparks• Mechanical friction

IEC Standards & CertificationsIEC Ex is an internationally recognised scheme for the certification of hazardous area electrical equipment. The IEC Ex System is designed to facilitate international trade in equipment and services for use in hazardous areas, while maintaining the required level of safety.1

Required InformationThere are 4 important pieces of information required when selecting equipment for hazardous areas.

• Zone Classification• Gas Group• Temperature or T Rating• IP Rating

Zone ClassificationsEquipment that is used in hazardous areas is classified into zones, depending on the potential of an explosion under normal operating conditions. The table below is a guide to zone classification of hazardous areas. B&R Ex Systems does not classify areas for customers, it is the responisbility of the installer or end user to know which zone their area falls within. It is recommended a qualified person is engaged to complete a risk analysis and classify the area in accordance with standard IEC 60079-14.

Gas & vapours Dust Description

Zone 0Ga

Zone 20Da An area in which an explosive atmosphere is continuously present or for long periods or frequently

Zone 1Gb

Zone 21Db An area in which an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur occasionally in normal operation.

Zone 2Gc

Zone 22Dc An area in which an explosive atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation.

The hazardous areas are classifi ed in the table above according to IEC 60079-10-1 and IEC 61241-10-2.

Page 16: B&R Enclosures HAZARDOUS AREAS · the hazardous area market. ... 10 Hazardous Areas LIGHTING ... The table below is a guide to zone classification of hazardous areas.

14 Hazardous Areas

Gas GroupsElectrical apparatus for use in areas with flammable gases and vapours are divided into groups:Group I – electrical equipment used in underground coal miningGroup II – electrical equipment used in petrochemical industries

Group II is subdivided into 3 groups based on their explosive properties (see table below).

Groups Representative Gas

Group I Methane

Group IIA Propane

Group IIB Ethylene

Group IIC Hydrogen, Acetylene, Carbon Disulphide

Temperature or 'T Rating'Temperature for IgnitionHot surfaces are a potential ignition source in hazardous applications. Hazardous materials will have different minimum temperatures at which ignition becomes a danger. Electrical equipment for hazardous areas is tested and allocated a ‘T Rating’ based on the maximum temperature of the equipment. The ‘T Rating’ must always have a lower maximum temperature than the ignition temperature of the gas group present.

Table 1: provides a summary of the maximum temperatures for the different ratings.

T Rating Maximum Temperature

T1 450ºC

T2 300ºC

T3 200ºC

T4 135ºC

T5 100ºC

T6 85ºC

Table 2: provides some examples of the ignition temperatures and ‘T Ratings’ for gases.

Example Gas Ignition Temperature T Rating

Methane 580ºC T1

Hydrogen 500ºC T1

Kerosene 295ºC T3

Petroleum 400ºC T2

Carbon Disulphide 95ºC T6

Diethyl Ether 160ºC T4

Ethyl Nitrite 95ºC T6

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

DustCombustible DustDust fibres or flyings, which are combustible or ignitable when mixed with air are known as combustible dusts. Dust explosions may be initiated by ignition of a cloud of dust. It is not unusual for an explosion, which starts from the ignition of a dust layer, to cause the dislodging of dust accumulated on various surfaces, which then leads to a dust cloud explosion.

Protection MethodsTypes of explosion protection for electrical equipment.

Type of Protection Principle Standard Zone

Ex d Flameproof Enclosure Containment – explosion within an enclosure will not be propogated outside the enclosure.

IEC 60079-1 Zone 1 & 2

Ex p Pressurised EnclosuresEnclosure in a protective gas is maintained at a pressure greater than that of the external atmosphere. IEC 60079-2 Zone 1 & 2

Ex q Powder Filling Mounting of potentially incendive components in an enclosure fi lled with quartz or solid glass particles. IEC 60079-5 Zone 1 & 2

Ex o Oil Immersion Equipment or parts are immersed in protective liquid such as oil. The protective liquid acts as an insulating medium. IEC 60079-6 Zone 1 & 2

Ex e Increased Safety Non sparking components are designed to substantially reduce the likelihood of the occurrence of fault conditions which could cause ignition. IEC 60079-7 Zone 1 & 2

Ex i Intrinsic Safety The potential spark energy of a circuit is reduced to below the amount required for ignition.

IEC 60079-11 Zone 0, 1 & 2

Ex n Non–sparkingElectrical apparatus in normal operating conditions and in certain specifi ed abnormal conditions, that is not capable of igniting a surrounding explosive gas atmosphere.

IEC 60079-15 Zone 2

Ex m EncapsulationParts that are capable of igniting an explosive atmosphere by either sparking or heating, are enclosed in a compound so that the explosive atmosphere cannot be ignited under operating or installation conditions.

IEC 60079-18 Zone 0, 1 & 2

Ex t Dust Protection by Enclosure Electrical equipment is protected by the enclosure and surface temperature limitation for use in explosive and dust atmospheres.
