Dictionary: {(Wel) + (coming)} = The action of feeling well (comfortable, good) when in a coming situa-tion. In order to a person be welcomed, it implies that he or she should be arriving somewhere. This meant that a movement, from point A to B, happened before. That is why we choose this background image as the introduction of our research, as this was the starting point of all our brainstorming – before thinking of any solution, we have putted ourselves in the shoes of a wide range of users (from children to seniors, to people with desabilities and so on) to see, somehow, if there was any weak signal that could contribute to increase the quality of the welcoming process on a major city such as Milan. We choose to classify each case with values from 0 to 5 in the following tags : Quest, Curiosity, Enabling, Relaxation, Home feeling and Improvement. These tags not also enabled us to understand better the true nature of all our cases but also, to manage them it a clearer way. The charts (presented below) are the result of that, which also shows somehow, the different origins and influences of the members of the BRACE group.

La Scala welcomes youngersPiazza alla Scala - Milan,Italy

Young people are far from the traditional ways of amusement and are less interested about museums or libraries, so they realize new programs to envolve them. In this case the result was a succes but, for theatres is more harder. Opera or ballet are really far from discos and movies, so it is difficult to propose them, expecially for their price. The theatre “alla Scala” has so decided to look at youngers, offering them a series of appointments in a special time slot and with a low price range. Their first approach was one day of “open doors” last semptember. Their initiative rescued so much success that they soon think about a new projet named “LaScala Under30”, in wich, people from 6 to 30 years are welcomed. Culture is not an advantage of few person, so everybody is welcome.

That’s the idea behind Blind Dinner, a Milan Blind Association where patrons eat in complete darkness. Illuminating devices like cell phones and watches are strictly forbidden, and it’s so dark you can’t see your hand in front of your face. Don’t think you can get away with any funny business, however the waiters are blind person.

Welcome new 500c via Montenapoleone - Milan, Italy A guerilla marketing strategy is what Fiat has choose to say “welcome 500C”. For the launch of this product they have realized some resin models in human scale of the Cabrio 500; they were settled in the parking area of Montenapoleone street. On the top of these cars, where is the sun-roof, they have put a vase cointaining little trees. Tourist and fashion shoppers are funny attracted by these cars: it was surely the best way to say welcome to this product and create a first contact between users and product.

Low prices for a luxury experienceNetherland, Amsterdam

Who designed the CitizenM was surely thinking about a new kind of travellers, mobile citizens which travel a lot and over all the planet, connected by technologies and smart transportation. For them was born CitizenM, an hotel that offers affordable luxury for the people, actually settled in two main airports of Amsterdam. Being a luxury hotel with a low price, they decided to add a new service known as “self chek in”; you can do it at home, deciding arrival and leaving time, the color of the light’s room and the disposition of furniture. It is the hotel that every traveller dreams, so welcome to luxury: it has a low price.

ChitChatNetherland, Amsterdam

Waiting for the train or for the plane long hours gets boring. But what if waiting became fun!? In this chair design by Teun Fleskens waiting could become fun and a good excuse to socialize and interact with others while trying to keep sitting and in balance. This idea is definitely a cool welcoming to waiting rooms.

I amsterdamNetherland, Amsterdam

How could a city give you a better welcome than let you climb and play with it's own name? Maybe with sex and drugs? oh... they already did this... thats' probably why i saw only kids playing with those tall letters...Anyway this giant logo is travelling to the main citys touristic hot spots to be your favourite pal in your vacations pictures!

Welcome in an unconventional locationKaiserslautern, Germany / Maastricht, Netherland

So, it is born a new trend in hotel world, concretized in welcoming in places that are far from the common idea of hotel. In Kaiserslautern, Germany, has been opened the Alcatraz Hotel, a receiving structure birth in the building that, till few years ago, guested a prison. It maintains the birthing architecture of the location, welcoming guest in rooms with gates. A similar approach has been adopted for the Kruisheren Hotel in Maastricht, Nederlands, where guests are welcomed in a deconsecrated gothic Church of V century, transformed into an Design Hotel.

Treptower parkBerlin, Germany

Ok, this summer I was in Berlin for the holidays and I noticed that it was pretty common (and legal) to be naked in parks of the city. Mostly, there was like people alone, just reading a book, catching sun or just admiring the contact with nature. They felt like they were at home. What can possibly be more welcoming than knowing that your city is open minded?

Das Park HotelVienna, Austria

Designer Andreas Strauss took sections of huge sewage pipes and added a coat of varnish and some creature comforts. To reserve a pipe, you use a self-service booking website, where you are provided a security code for when you arrive. Inside your pipe, you can expect to find a double bed, a light, a power outlet and internet connection, and a sleeping bag. Toilets and other hotel amenities are in the park nearby. The park, by the way, is located on the beautiful Danube River. The cost is whatever you choose to pay. (Some people even leave little presents!)If Milan have the same park hotel, it will become a much more welcoming city, specially for young tourist.

Piccadilly Circus interactive displayLondon, United Kingdom

Right in London's heart, this huge screen was program to interact with the one million of people that cross this square everyday. Instead of been one more publicity display, this screen invites you to play with the city. This is specially effective with tourists that are usually with close friends or family and have more time to play around and take photographs to record this funny moment. The screen near the Duomo would be perfect for this. And it's free!

Piano staircaseStockholm, Sweden

This installation in Sweden invites people to play and have fun in the city while doing exercise at the same time. It's invites people to start losing their lazy habits and estimulates each ones creativity! And it's free! Not surprisingly, after the piano stairs were installed, 66% more people than usual choose the stairs over the escalator.

The Big Lemon rideBrighton, United Kingdom

In Brighton, an organization of citizens with eco-sustainable ideas has realized the first low cost bus system, in order to invite people to be environmentally friendly. These yellow buses, run using 100% used cooking oil. They are easily distinguishable for their color that gave them the nickname of “Big Lemon”. To promote their initiative, once a month you can have a free ride if you bring them a lemon!

Arlanda hotel Stockholm, Sweden

Cheap and comfortable public transportation play important role for all passengers .In some countries the weather condition make different problems to tourists.A Swedish hotel (Arlanda hotel) can solve this problem by new way. In this case, an express train go directly inside the hotel. It means that one of the train station is located inside the hotel. Hotel Arlanda’s guests can come to the hotel from the airport and visit all the town with out any problem even during cold and dark Sweden winter.

5 star public bathroomParis, France

This is not a typical public bathroom. Here, you are assisted by a butler who keeps everything fresh and clean. It costs 1E, but you are provided with a top class service that you would get in a 5 star hotel. No more dark and smelly bathrooms or the need to consume something in any establishment just to use the toilet. It is welcoming because it offers a personalized service with hygiene and comfort.

Vehicles with useful information for pedestriansParis, France

Why vehicles when they are stopped are completely useless? This new concept, was made for the heart of the big European cities as a public transportation. The feature I found most welcoming it's the fact that when it is stopped (traffic or just parked) its translucid interactive panels display useful information about the surroundings; for instance, map with the precise location, it could also make publicity of nearby small restaurants/shops and other small events that cannot afford to be displayed in some major comunication plataforms. Proximity related information. And it's free!

Zero star hotelTeufen, Switzerland

Null Stern Hotel is an invention by the Swiss twin brothers and concept artists Frank and Patrik Riklin from the Atelier für Sonderaufgaben (studio for special works) in St.-Gallen. World’s first Null Stern Hotel develops in cooperation with the commune of Teufen (canton Appenzell Outer RhoWat-des, Switzerland) as a full of relish amplification in the common Hotel bargain in form of an art installation.Converted from an old nuclear bomb shelter, the Null Stern Hotel is the antithesis of the luxury and megalomania of this time, especially if you consider that Town House Galleria in Milan was just named the first seven star hotel… The concept of Null Stern might be over their heads when they compare it to youth hostels.

NUMBERED STENCILS Oporto

This stencil is all over my city, it’s funny because it makes people talk about it, and it welcomes them to start to take a closer look at all the gorgeous street art that exists in the city. But the best part is, if you find and photograph yourself with all the 1000 stencils, you get a prize!

HAND SANITIZING SOLUTION Oporto

Ok, so more and more people have become nervous and threatened by the ebb and flow of various types and viruses and more and than ever sanitation has become an issue. Public domains like airports, schools, hospitals, etc, afford high traffic with a high level of human interaction are the most problematic places. The hand sanitizing lotion is being implemented in these places, since its alcool based, water isn’t required. Hygiene is always welcoming.PUBLIC OPINION SCREENS

Oporto

What is more welcoming that knowing that your opinion is heard? When are you more receptive to information? When you are bored! Like waiting for the metro at some station. This worked pretty well in my city because everyone felt (and was in fact) involved somehow in the final decision (cityhall related). And of course, it is highly entertaining and interesting to hear people of all social backgrounds speaking about one single cause. I never thought that mannerisms, accents and expressions could be so funny to observe!

SPANISH COMUNIST VILLAGEMarinaleda - Spain,

Marinaleda is a town and municipio of the province of Seville, Andalusia inhabitated by 2708 people. What is defintly welcoming about this little town is that the town give you the project, the materials, and the land where to build your new home. Plus they will give you a job in the farming cooperative runned by the city itself. And they lived happily ever after, also during the global crysis.

HOBBIT HOUSE Manila - Phillipines

Long before the Lord of the Rings trilogy debuted on theatre screens, the Hobbit House was founded in Manila by former Peace Corps volunteer and Tolkein fan Jim Turner. Don’t expect to find the sort of lush Middle Earth scenery that filled the movies, however – what you’ll encounter instead if you stop to dine at the Hobbit House is a staff of ‘the smallest waiters in the world’. That’s right, check your political correctness at the door – this is one group of little people who are okay with being referred to as hobbits.

BUS STOPKuala Lumpur - Malaysia

Welcome to bus stop, a funny place, where lying in wait.More and more, people prefer moving using public transportation. You could be bored by lying in wait and the idea of resting a lot of time at bus stop, may be alone, is terrifying. Some comunication agencies have proposed to use this place as setting for the advertisement, proposing publicities that have changed the bus shelter. Quicksilver realized a mini ramp attached to a bus stop and, for surf lovers, there is a bus stop with a surfboard bench and a wave image as background. The most interesting was that realized by Sony for Play Station in Malaysia, where the bus shelter was transformated in a ludic station putting on its walls some sheets of bubblewrap. People are invited to interact with them, spending their waiting time, having fun. So, welcome to Play Station bus stop, a place were boringness is not admitted.

The smallest country in the world is located near Dayton, Nevada and has been ruled for over 30 years, by President Kevin Baugh. But his great nation ( 2 sons and 3 dogs) has yet to file a complaint.Molossia is the world’s smallest republic, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have laws.
