It’s the awards season!

We’re delighted that this catalogue comes hot on the back of a string of awards over the past few months:

BGTW best article - on Hungary, by Bradt PublishingDirector Adrian Phillips, in the Independent on SundayBGTW best guidebook – for Yukon by Polly EvansThe Oldie – Best Guidebook SeriesWanderlust Readers’ Awards – Gold award for BestGuidebook Series Independent Publishers’ Guild – Trade Publisher of theYear CommendationWhich? – Top travel guidebook publisher (from a survey in April).

Thank you to everyone who has supported us.

In addition to new titles and editions in our main series, November sees new titlesin our full-colour Highlights series, covering Amazon and South Africa, for travellerswho want to focus on the top sights of a destination. Also in Autumn our Bradt onBritain campaign celebrates our growing list of UK titles with the arrival of SacredBritain, Bus-Pass Britain, Eccentric Oxford and Eccentric Cambridge.

A focus on wildlife brings new editions of Southern African Wildlife and GalapagosWildlife, while in August comes 100 Alien Invaders, a fascinating look at theinvasive species – animals and plants – that are changing our world.

Finally, we have moved offices. We’re still in Chalfont St Peter, where we werefounded by Hilary Bradt almost 40 years ago, but now at a new, bigger, brighteroffice. The details are in the back of this catalogue.

Managing Director

The Bradt Story

When Hilary Bradt and her thenhusband George wrote their first guideon a river barge floating down atributary of the Amazon in 1973, theynever dreamt that they werefounding one of the most esteemed travelpublishing companies in the world. Nearly four decades laterthere are over 140 Bradt titles.

The company has grown slowly but consistently – its sustainable philosophy hasextended beyond travel and is at the heart of its own development – which meansthat each title has been hand-picked for adding something new and worthwhile tothe ever-increasing range of guides available in bookshops around the world.

Hilary Bradt handed the management of the company to Donald Greig in 2007and now lives in semi-retirement in Devon. She was awarded an MBE in 2008.

Britain is packed with places to visit that can be

called 'sacred'. Many are tourist sites, such as Iona

and Stonehenge. Many more are out-of-the-way

pilgrimage destinations, druidic circles or obscure

islands. Some are only recognised as 'sacred' by

those with a special interest: Karl Marx's tomb in

Highgate cemetery or the island on Althorp where

Princess Diana is buried. The book visits sites of myth, legend, and apparition,

and locations revered for their connections with philosophers, art, music,

literature, sport and crime.

Martin Symington is an awarding-winning travel journalist and author.

■ There is no comparable guide on the market.■ Interprets ‘sacred’ as a personal viewpoint, from Buddhist shrines to a

tree in Barnes where a rock star died. ■ Practical information on travel, where to stay, eat and drink.

Bus-Pass Britain50 Great British Bus Routes

Favourite journeys described by locals

Edited by Nicky Gardner and Susanne Kries

A colourful celebration of travelling by bus

around the British Isles with favourite bus-

routes submitted by members of the

public in response to a Bradt competition.

The selection reveals a mosaic of journeys,

from a pleasant meander through Surrey

lanes to an orbit through Birmingham's

edgy suburbs.

Each journey includes recommendations

on where to stop and explore, with details

of inspiring sights, suggested walks and the

best places to eat. All the practical details

are here – bus times, map references, the

length of each route and travel

connections. A scattering of quirky stories

(‘Bus-stops’) entertain travellers as they

wend their way across the nation.

The editors, Susanne Kries and Nicky Gardner, are also editors of hidden

europe magazine.

■ An antidote to fast travel, this first guide of its kind, celebrates the local – slow travel at its best.

■ Bus journeys in Britain increased by over a billionin the last five years.

EURASIA

You may not think anything so slow could

be so deadly, but this murderous mollusc

leaves a slimy trail of death and destruction.

Also known as the rosy wolfsnail, the

cannibal snail has a voracious appetite for

other snails and has proved the downfall of

many native species wherever it has been

introduced.

Shell-shock

The cannibal snail is a native of Florida. In the

1950s it was imported to Hawaii in order to see off

another invasive predator, the giant African land

snail (Scientific name). Unfortunately, like all bullies,

it was reluctant to take on a larger rival and instead

turned on its smaller, indigenous cousins. One such

victim was Hawaii’s O’ahu tree snail (Scientific

name), which was driven to extinction within just

one year. On the Hawaiian island of Kauai, all 21

species of the endemic Carelia genus of snails are

believed to have vanished, and more Hawaiian

species are now on the endangered list.

Sadly it seems that we didn’t learn our lesson in

Hawaii. During the 1970s, cannibal snails were

taken across the Pacific to French Polynesia, where

they soon developed a taste for the native tree snail

Partulid faba. After just two decades, the population

of this species on the island of Raiatea had dropped

by 80 per cent.Thankfully, however, speedy

intervention by Bristol Zoo is saving it from

extinction. The zoo is breeding the Partulids in

captivity, caring for 88 precious little snails in a

climate-controlled laboratory. So far it has raised 15

and hopes, one day, to release these tiny babies into

protected areas of the Pacific.

Where next?

Unfortunately the march – or slither –

of the cannibal snail continues across the

tropics.According to Columbia University,

Euglandina rosea has now colonized Samoa,

Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Japan, Madagascar,

the Seychelles, India, Sri Lanka and the Caribbean.

The potential effect on the native snails of these

islands is devastating.

Cannibal snail

Euglandina rosea

Fact file

•Cannibal snails breed five times faster than most other

species of snail and an average adult will lay up to

40 eggs each year.

•The shell of this chunky species measures up to 76mm.

•Cannibal snails follow the slime trail of their prey,

slithering up to three times faster than their victims.

They will eat a smaller snail whole or launch

a ram-raid attack on the shell of a

larger one.

3 INVASION OF THE CREEPY CRAWLIES

58.

The secrets of snail success

This super mollusc is able to thrive

anywhere because it keeps all it needs

to survive immediately to hand. Not only

does it carry around its own house on its

back; it also has an inexhaustible food

supply. Parents will eat their own young,

and surviving babies start devouring

their weaker siblings as soon as they

hatch. It’s hardly surprising, then, that

adult cannibal snails tend to work solo.

They put dinner on hold to mate,

however. And, being cross-fertilising

hermaphrodites, both partners are

liable to become pregnant.

than 15m. Once the alarm is raised, the hive will

release great armies of bees to attack and sting the

intruder. They may pursue their victim for nearly

2km.

Killer bees are remarkably adaptable and can make

their homes in hollow logs, heaps of rubble, cars,

tree stumps, log piles and even tin cans. They

spread their territories by raiding the hives of the

more easy-going European honeybees, found

across the Americas, deposing the queen and

replacing her with their own monarch. Then they

mate with the local populace to create hybrid

bees.

These hybrids cause severe problems for the local

beekeeping industry in the Americas. Not only do

they produce just one fifth of the honey of the

European bees; this honey is more difficult and

thus more expensive to harvest. They also pose an

environmental threat by competing with native

pollinating insects.

Fact file

• Hidalgo, Texas has a statue of a killer

bee. The tiny town (pop. 7,000) claims

to be the first place in the United States

to have been attacked by killer bees

and now styles itself as the Killer Bee

Capital of the World. It even has a

hockey team named the Rio Grande

Killer Bees.

• If attacked by a swarm of killer bees,

run indoors and slam the windows and

doors shut. Don’t dive into the nearest

pond to escape: the killer bees will be

waiting for you to surface – and you

can’t hold your breath forever.

• Local people across Africa have

traditionally harvested wild honey by

following the call of a small bird, the

greater honeyguide (Indicator

indicator), which leads them to the nest

in exchange for some left-over

honeycomb.

We coversurprising destinations like Lake Baikal, North Korea and Shangri-La, as well asthose on the cusp of a travel renaissance such as our ground-breakingZimbabwe, Sierra Leone and Guyana guides. Although the mix of titles anddestinations may change, some things don't. ...take the road less travelled“Our books are as much travelogues as travel guides, infused with the personal

voice and accounts of each author.” Hilary Bradt, Founder

indulge their individual passions. This attention to quality has brought many
