WHAT IS BRAINSTORMING?
Brainstorming is a group or individucreativity technique by which efforts are made tofind a conclusion for a specific problem bygathering a list ideas spontaneously contributedby its members.
BRAINSTORMING …to attack the problem with the ideas as much as possible
Programmed thinking versus lateral thinking
Another way to think of brainstorming is to understand what it’s not and how it differs from something we do often in our day to day jobs— programmed thinking.
Programmed thinking is using a structured or logical framework to create a product, system or service. GS Method, general project management, information design, and quantitative and morphological analysis all represent programmed thinking.
Lateral thinking is about jumping outside of traditional patterns that we use to solve problems.
Brainstorming is different from the structural process that we often use on projects, but both methods have a time and place in our toolkit when used correctly.
Where programmed thinking works…
In the analysis or research stage of a project
In the detailed design of a product, service or system that has been identified
Root cause analysis
Where Lateral thinking works…
In improving an existing concept
Generating radical ideas
Making creative leaps
What are some areas in your company where you can use lateral thinking?

My Favorite Book
My favorite book… I don’t know where to start. I read so many books that are interesting that it’s hard to choose just one. I guess I could start by talking about the kinds of books I really like. I like biographies and autobiographies the best. I really enjoy reading about another person’s life. One of my favorite
books is called Roots by Alex Haley. How the author was able to trace his family history all the way back to Africa was amazing! Another book I really enjoyed was Carl Sandburg’s biography of Abraham Lincoln. What an incredible president! There are also
some very interesting books about leaders like Napoleon, Churchill, and Stalin. Well, I guess that gives me a few ideas
about where I can start on my topic.
The advantages of Brainstorming :
1. Encouraged Creative Thinking
2. All ideas are accepted
3. Makes everyone part of team
4. Exciting and Easy
The Disadvantages of Brainstorming
Only works when everyone in the room has something to say.
Without strict control or leader present, the group may take a long time to get the solution.
Group with a large members will not effective.
People with high emotion are not allowed.
