Bramley Community Centre New Year, New Start
January is a time of new starts, and we’re delighted to announce that from January 2018, our main office will be at Bramley Community Centre on Waterloo Lane. BEA will take over management of the community centre, aiming to make it a thriving place that local people are proud of. Our weekly drop-in will also move to the centre. Come for a look around our new office and a cup of tea to welcome in the New Year on Tuesday 9 January, 10-12.

Winter wrapped up: a guide
to keeping warm this winter

Keep warm, keep well
Winter is on it’s way. The cold can make people more vulnerable, and ice, snow and rain can make people more isolated. Public Health advice is to keep your house warm to reduce the risk of health problems such as chest infections, heart attacks and strokes. There are things you can do to keep warm, stay well and be active. BEA can help. ··························································································· ···
The advice is to keep your main living room around 70°f
(21°c), and the rest of your home at least 64°f (18°c). If
fuel bills are a worry, or to save some money on heating,
we can put you in touch with experts on insulating your
home or finding a more affordable energy supplier.
Organisations like Money Buddies can take away the pain
of switching supplier and will guide you through the
process. It can save you a lot of money! ···························································································
Closing your curtains at dusk keeps the heat in. Wearing
several thin layers of clothing, which trap warm air, can
keep you warmer than one thick layer. Wearing warm
clothes at night, even a hat will also help. Have plenty of
hot drinks if you’re cold. ···························································································
Keeping a stock of basic food items in the cupboard or
freezer is sensible in case it becomes difficult to go
shopping. Talk to BEA about using our shopping service
over the winter months, or ask someone to help you order
food online if you can’t get to the supermarket. If you need
medication, call your pharmacist to ask for home delivery. ···························································································
Having flu can be very serious. You can have a free flu jab if you are: aged 65+; under 65 with a medical condition such as diabetes, heart or lung disease; or a carer of an older or disabled person. Even if you feel healthy, getting the jab may help to protect you and those around you. ···························································································
See the panel on the right for information on what help and support is available to you around Winter warmth.

Meet the local resident Philip McConnell, Chairperson, Broadlea Better Community Tenants & Residents Association
Starting a tenants and residents association is a great way to improve your area and get to know your neighbours. Bramley has very few residents associations. Leeds Housing encourages people to start new groups with their help and training. We asked Philip McConnell to tell us about how tenants and residents in Broadlea are making a positive difference. Would you like to start or get involved in a tenants and residents association where you live? Contact BEA. Philip McConnell, moved to the Broadleas in 2009, joined the Association in 2016 and soon became Chair. Contributing to the Association helped him feel useful again after redundancy, as voluntary work often does. The Association runs a Homework club on Fridays (at which some adults also get reading support), coffee mornings, litter picking, supervised sporting activities in school holidays, and garden makeovers (for frail older people, people with illness or disability, and single parents). The gardening is particularly valuable for older people who may just see family once every week or two. It helps reduce social isolation and can lead to involvement in other events and services. It’s very rewarding work. The team involved in the Association get excellent support from councillors and housing office staff. They would love to hear from you if you live on the Broadleas and would like to get involved in activities or on the committee – phone Philip on 0113 805 8217 or find them on FaceBook.
I’m a BEA Volunteer Janette Jones 1. What’s your volunteer role? I lead the Tuesday exercise class at Bramley Community Centre and supervise bingo on Thursdays. 2. How long have you been a volunteer? Since January 2017, and I’ve been doing the exercise class since the Spring. 3. Why did you get involved? After retiring, at first my family needed me, but then I felt a bit redundant. It’s given me back my pep and vitality! 4. Three words that sum up BEA for you? Friendship, caring, included 5. What do you get out of volunteering? ’ Feeling wanted and valued. It’s good for my self-worth. I can do what I’ve trained in all my life. 6. What else do you like doing? All sorts! Caravanning with my grand-children, and line dancing (which I’ve been doing for 23 years!) 7. Where were you born? Lee Moor Common (a village near Wakefield.) I moved to Bramley in 1965. 8. What’s your favourite film? Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. 9. And your favourite book? Things by Dilly Court and Josephine Cox. 10. Tell us one interesting fact about yourself I’ll have a go at anything!
