August 2018 Chair’s reportYet another productive and successful year for BEA has passed, amazingly quickly! The number of volunteers has increased. They all do sterling work, as do the BEA and OWLS staff. On behalf of the Trustees, I would like to express our sincere thanks to all concerned for making BEA the strong, supportive organisation it is. Long may this be so.We are grateful too for the continued support of Leeds City Council, while it faces its own unprecedented challenges; BEA could not function without substantial financial backing. Great efforts by staff members have produced an increase in fundraising this year. Trustees are pleased to single out Tudor Trust and Morrisons Foundation for substantial donations. However, sufficient money is always an issue and work to seek out funders and other initiatives to yield much needed income goes on.This time last year, I advised of ongoing discussions with the council over the future of Bramley Community Centre. I am pleased to report that those discussions have yielded fruit, and BEA expects to take on the management of the centre early in 2018!Finally, it is with regret that we have to say goodbye to two Board members. Norah Gibson has served her term, half of it as a very successful chair, and constitutionally must now step down from the Board. Sharon Wyeth, has had to hand in her resignation due to her business commitments. Our deep thanks to Norah and Sharon for their valuable contributions to the work of the Board.Stuart Quin

August 2018

General Manager’s reportDid you know that Leeds aims to be the best city in which to grow old? And that the city sees ‘community based assets’ like BEA and OWLS as playing an important role in achieving that aim?

BEA’s involvement with Mrs W is a good example of how we can help Leeds become the best city in which to grow old. Mrs W joined BEA after her husband died. She is nervous about going out but uses our door-to-door shopping service and has a weekly visit from a befriender. Mrs W has problems communicating but when you mention her volunteer befriender, her face lights up. She misses baking for her husband but has started baking buns for the befriender and BEA’s driver.

Behind the scenes we have been working on a strategic plan to increase our contribution, whilst being careful not to overstretch ourselves. Our appointment of a qualified Community Social Worker (part of the Supporting Wellbeing project), is a great example. This two year post is supporting elders to make positive changes to their lives.

BEA has always contributed to the wider community and in doing so promotes the value of older people. For instance, through our intergenerational work, support for community events, Bramley Community Shop and the increasing community use of Bramley Lawn social centre. In 2018 we will become custodians of Bramley Community Centre. We plan to make the centre a place that Bramley is proud of and another example of the value of local older people.

VolunteersBEA could not operate without our volunteers, who are actively involved in every part of the organisation including graphic design, washing up, strategic direction, helping people on and off minibuses, serving customers in the shop, leading activities, taking photographs, IT work and so much more! After looking carefully at volunteer training needs we now run sessions in 1st aid, dementia awareness, and wheelchair handling every 3 months. We are always looking for new volunteers. At the moment we are especially looking for day time befrienders, shop volunteers, drivers and bus buddies.

Age is…“looking for new ways to fill up my time with activities I enjoy.”

Bramley Community Centrea new era for Bramley

We are delighted to say that we expect to move to Bramley Community Centre early in 2018!

Leeds City Council’s Executive Board agreed in February that BEA could take on the management of Bramley Community Centre in an ‘asset transfer’ from the Council. This has been a long journey, but we are nearly there!

Becoming custodians of Bramley Community Centre offers a tremendous opportunity, both for Bramley Elderly Action as an organisation and for the whole community.

We hope that existing users of the Centre will remain, and we are actively looking for new users. We will also be moving our own office there. We will leave our Stanningley Road office (our home since 2008) while retaining and continuing to develop our innovative social centre Bramley Lawn. We will then have bases in which we can run activities, as well as hosting a range of community events, in different locations. We sincerely believe that this move will make our services and our staff more accessible to more of our members and potential members.

We want and intend to make Bramley Community Centre a vibrant, inclusive, well-used venue that the people of Bramley feel proud of.

Please let us know if you would like to contribute to this exciting new era for Bramley. You can still phone us on 0113 236 1644.
