Pastoral Ponderings….

I want to share with you something very powerful that he wrote on May 6th of this

year.

Answering The Crisis Question-by Brian Tome

What we do right now, and in the following weeks, matters.

You may not address the world’s stage, but you can check in on your family. You can give your toilet paper to the elderly couple across the street. You can share a meal with a friend who is stressed. You can make a phone call to someone who is lonely. You can dare to hug someone who is hurting. Say thank you to service industry professionals who are still bravely picking up your trash, patrolling the streets, and fighting fires. Leave a larger tip for the waitress. Pray for teachers. Shop at a local business. Meet a real and tangible need.

Do not dare to think that you will escape if you remain siloed. To bolt the door and leave the hurting on the street to pick up their own pieces is abhorrent. If you identify as a follower of Jesus, calm in the midst of crisis is in your bloodline.

We follow Jesus, who himself broke cultural norms of cleanliness when he touched lepers, men and women afflicted with an incredibly infectious skin disease.

We walk in the footsteps of early Christians who, when Rome was decimated by plague in the 200s AD, stayed behind to care for the poor, the sick, and the left behind.

We are inspired by the storied history of believers who traveled the world over to build hospitals for the sick and orphanages for the abandoned.

We are driven by the same spirit that compelled reformer Martin Luther to open his home during the plague, preacher Charles Spurgeon to remain in London during a Victorian-era cholera outbreak, and Mother Teresa to minister to the infected and dying of Kolkata.

It is in times of crisis and darkness that the light of Christ inside his followers shines the brightest. We can be a source of hope. We can be a picture of compassion. We can be real and tangible kindness. You are alive during the coronavirus outbreak of 2020 because you can do something about it. The question is, will you?

2 Timothy 1:7 says that “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and self-control.” When our lives intersect with God, His Spirit dwells within us. That Spirit brings power to rise above panic; it brings self-control over the thoughts in our minds; and most of all, it brings a love that compels us to move toward our friends and neighbors who need a dose of hope.. We live in scary times, but the fear doesn’t have to win. Choose the path of resilience and courage. You were born for this. By the grace of God, we will get through this crisis. Together. See you Sunday—Pastor David

A Word About Re-Opening For Worship

Beginning last Sunday with approval of the Board and Elders a gradual re-opening of the sanctuary for worship has begun. Last week was by invitation only. During the month of June we can have 25 in worship. We have focused the first two weeks on those who do not have internet capabilities. If you would like to be on the list to come back into worship we are asking that you call the church office and have your name and how many to our list. There are strict guidelines including wearing a mask and sitting in specific places.

School Aged Children’s Ministry Update

Hello Everyone, I hope you had a fun Memorial Day! I was blessed to have my husband available to celebrate our 29th wedding anniversary since it was a holiday. It was nice and relaxed!

May 21st ended our Montessori at Home schooling for all of our students. Even though I could not see them every day it was fun to see pictures of the work they had been doing and receiving hidden Morse Code message from them. I will miss these. Normally, right now, we would be getting ready to have our fun last two weeks of school with our pajama pizza party and play date at Mrs. Agoff's house and honoring all the wonderful Fathers, grandfathers and uncles in our lives, but not this year. So since I can not say how awesome and great they are at a special breakfast or lunch I hope you will allow me to do it here. I have had so many fathers contact me during this forced homeschooling adventure with questions or videos and texts of what their child is doing. It is great to see how involved they all are and how fun they are making school for their children. I love the tag team between the mothers and fathers as they take turns working their daily jobs and teaching their children. We are so blessed with these amazing men in these children's lives. Thank you each and every father, grandfather and uncle out there that is showing these children that they are important and valued and that school is important and valuable no matter where it happens. You are valued and loved!

The other thing we will not be preparing for is our end of year graduation with the class play and songs, acknowledging all the hard work everyone has done, saying good bye to those going on to kindergarten and the amazing feast afterwards. No, nothing so grand this year. Thankfully the governor said that we can do gatherings of 25 or less so we will be doing individual family graduations with those families that want to. Every child and parent has worked so hard they all deserve a diploma!!

Right now I do not know if everything that is happening is going to interfere with our normal school activities that we do during the summer. Mainly our Meet and Greet in July and our Orientation night in August. I really appreciate all your prayers for the students, the teachers and myself. We do feel and see the blessing of those prayers. Thank you! If I could ask for prayers for guidance in how to move forward towards preparing for fall classes I know that Ms. Jamie, Mrs. Hemingway and I would greatly appreciate them.

We at Children's Corner Montessori all pray that you have a safe, healthy and fun summer! Thank you, Mrs. Agoff

Zoom has worked well for keeping the Children’s Ministry going for March, April, and May. However, our children are overwhelmed with screen time and remote structured learning, so we are going to switch up our program a bit for the Summer. Based on feedback from parents of the participants we are moving away from structured remote learning for the summer months. We will meet by Zoom every couple weeks to hear joys and prayer concerns as well as just to visit and see each other. We are going to continue to send monthly activity packages with crafts focused around the scriptures and learning. Additionally, we are reaching out to the kids by sending letters, postcards and mail. (Who doesn’t love to receive mail??) If anyone wants to help with this ministry, please contact me at [email protected]. Our supplemental activities during the week have been a big hit! Kathy Helms really deserves all the credit and thanks for this. After receiving their package in the mail, the Ray family (who have been joining from Spokane Washington each week) sent a message saying, “Thank you sending the activities. The kids work on them every week. It’s a fun activity to mix in with the schoolwork!” Check out the sample artwork from our talented artists below! As with any ministry program, it is important to be open to adapting to the needs of those you are serving. I am hopeful by August we will be back to a more normalized, in person experience. But if not, I will work with the ministry team, program cabinet, and families on ways to continue to keep our families engaged and supported during this time.

A WORD ABOUT GIVING

Friends, during times like this everyone it seems suffers financially and in other ways. The church is no different. Churches often times suffer when attendance is kept away or lower than normal. There are many who give when they are in church but when they are not physically in the building they don’t give. Right now very few are actually in the building now. We want to remind you to mail your check in with the included envelope or make your donation via the web page giving portal: https://fcc-jc.com/donate Thank you ever so much for your faithfulness!
