The quaint borough of Branchville, hometo 841 people, is less than 1 square mile, but has a lot to offer. Settled in the1700’s and nestled in the northern mostarea of Sussex County, Branchville wasoriginally part of Frankford Township.According to the marker
commemorating the history of Branchville, located in BranchvilleBorough Park on Wantage Avenue/Sussex County Route 519:

James Haggerty purchased thisland in 1793 and built additional successful mills lending the area thename known as "Brantown" due to the many mills located here. Named"Branchville" in 1821 by Schoolmaster Samuel Bishop. The post officeopened in 1824. William H. (Billy) Bell established a railroad line in1869. In 1882 a devastating fire ravaged most of the Village ofBranchville. Charles Crisman erected a dam and powerhouse along theCulver Brook to generate power in 1892."
