Appendix A: Methodology Sampling The sampling frame for this study is comprised of a list of all undergraduate students ages 18 or over as of February 9, 2018. The list was provided by the Brandeis registrar’s office and included 3,516 students. A simple random sample of 1,757 students was drawn from the frame.

Survey Administration The survey was conducted online using the Limesurvey platform (Version 2.67.1+170626). Invitations to participate in the survey were emailed on February 27, 2018. Invitations were followed by three reminders sent on March 2, March 8, and March 15, 2018. The survey was closed on March 21, 2018. All respondents were informed that upon completion of the full survey they would receive a $10 Amazon.com gift certificate. Upon completion of the survey, respondents were asked to provide an email address for their sending a gift code. Respondents were given the opportunity to opt-out of receiving a gift card; two respondents did so.

Dispositions and Response Rates During the course of the study eleven individuals were found to be ineligible for the study by virtue of not being students at Brandeis at the time of the survey. These individuals were dropped from the sample, leaving only 1,746 eligible individuals in the sample. The table below reports final dispositions and response rates by class year. Individuals who had completed at least the Religion and Ethnicity section of the survey were considered “partials” if they did not complete the remainder of the survey. Individuals who dropped out of the survey prior to the Religion and Ethnicity section were considered “break-offs.” The total response rate for the survey was 54.3% (AAPOR RR2).

Weighting Weights were calculated to adjust for differences between the characteristics of respondents and known characteristics of the population, with respect to class year and international student status. Unfortunately, it was not possible to weight the achieved sample by race and ethnicity because of limitations in the data available from the Brandeis registrar’s office.

Weights were applied to all analyses involving one or two way tables of frequencies but were not applied to regression analyses. Weighted analyses were conducted using the “svy” suite of command in Stata, and confidence intervals and Chi square tests produced for such analyses account for the sampling characteristics of the data.

Appendix B: Coding paradigms and Additional Analyses

Construction of Race Variable The survey question that asked about race and ethnicity allowed respondents to select multiple options to best represent how they describe themselves. A small number (N=65, 6%) of respondents chose two or more races. For these respondents, we privileged non-White classifications for analysis purposes. A hierarchy of responses was created to classify people who indicated they had multiple races: Hispanic, Black, East Asian, Other Asian, Other Ethnicity, and White. The race a respondent identified with that was highest on that list determined how they were categorized for analysis. For example, a respondent who identified as Hispanic and Black was coded as Hispanic. This follows the technique used by the US Census1 to ask about Hispanic status separately from race and to consider respondents who indicate that they consider themselves Hispanic to be Hispanic, regardless of other racial definitions.

Our categories were constructed from the following individual response options:

· Hispanic – “Mexican American/Chicano/a,” “Puerto Rican,” “Other Latino/a” · Black – “Black/African American” · East Asian – “East Asian (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese)” · Other Asian – “South Asian (e.g., Indian, Pakistani, Nepalese, Sri Lankan)”, “Southeast Asian

(e.g., Cambodian, Vietnamese, Hmong, Filipino),” “Other Asian” · Other Ethnicity – “American Indian/Alaskan Native,” “Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander,” “Arab,”

any other-text response not classifiable into an existing category · White – “White/Caucasian”

Construction of Jewish Status Variable In both the 2016 and 2018 surveys of Brandeis undergraduates, a respondent’s Jewish status was categorized based on answers to several questions: a primary religion question, a secondary religion question, a Jewish aside from religion question, and questions that determined the religion of the respondent’s parent(s). Regardless of their religious identification, 35% of 2018 Brandeis undergraduates reported that they have at least one Jewish parent. This includes 28% with two Jewish parents and 7% with one Jewish parent.

Based on data from these sources, this report’s categorization of Jewish respondents is as follows:

Jewish by religion: Respondents were placed in this category if they selected “Jewish” in response to the primary religion question and did not select any religion other than “Jewish” in response to the secondary religion question. In the 2018 study of Brandeis undergraduates, 83% of undergraduates with two Jewish parents and 51% of those undergraduates with one Jewish parent identified as Jewish by religion.

Page 5: Brandeis Community v2 TechAppend

3

Jewish, no religion: Respondents were placed in this category if they did not select “Jewish” as their primary or secondary religion but did indicate that they considered themselves to be fully or partially Jewish “aside from religion.” Thirteen percent of 2018 Brandeis undergraduates with two Jewish parents and 29% of those with one Jewish parent identified as Jewish, no religion.

All other respondents were considered “not Jewish.” This includes respondents who indicated that their primary religion was “Jewish” but then selected another religion for a secondary religion, or who indicated a religion other than “Jewish” in their primary religion but selected “Jewish” as their secondary religion (1% of all undergraduates in 2018). It also includes respondents with a Jewish parent who did not indicate they were Jewish by either religion or aside from religion (3% of all undergraduates in 2018).

Homophily of Social Networks by Race/Ethnicity and Religion In our analysis of friendship patterns across different groups at Brandeis we adjusted for the different proportions of each ethnic groups in the Brandeis student population, by adapting a measure used in the study of social networks known as the Coleman homophily index (Coleman, 1958). In the study of social networks, the term homophily is used to describe the tendency of people with similar characteristics to associate with one another. For each group the Coleman homophily index 𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻 is calculated as

𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻 = 𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝐻𝐻𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃 𝑓𝑓𝑃𝑃𝐻𝐻𝑓𝑓𝑃𝑃𝑓𝑓𝑓𝑓 𝑤𝑤ℎ𝑃𝑃 𝑎𝑎𝑃𝑃𝑓𝑓 𝑃𝑃ℎ𝑓𝑓 𝑓𝑓𝑎𝑎𝑠𝑠𝑓𝑓 − 𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝐻𝐻𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃 𝑃𝑃𝑓𝑓 𝑔𝑔𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑔𝑔𝑃𝑃 𝐻𝐻𝑃𝑃 𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑔𝑔𝑝𝑝𝑎𝑎𝑃𝑃𝐻𝐻𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃

1 − 𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝐻𝐻𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃 𝑃𝑃𝑓𝑓 𝑔𝑔𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑔𝑔𝑃𝑃 𝐻𝐻𝑃𝑃 𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑔𝑔𝑝𝑝𝑎𝑎𝑃𝑃𝐻𝐻𝑃𝑃𝑃𝑃

Although we do not know the average proportion of a student’s friends who are the same race, we can still use this formula to adjust the proportion of students of a given race who have “all” or “mostly” friends of that same race, as reported in Table 7 in the main report, and account for fact that some racial/ethnic groups are more common on campus than others. The original 𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻 measure was constructed so that, for a given ethnicity, it would equal zero if social connections across races were formed purely by chance, that is, that individuals of that race had no particular tendency to form friendships with others of their own race. In this adapted form a value of zero indicates that the proportion of individuals of a given race with all or mostly friends of the same race is the same as the incidence of that race in the population. For example, if Whites were 50% of the population, and 50% of Whites had “all or mostly” White friends, the adapted 𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻 measure would equal zero. However, if Whites were only 20% of the population, but 50% of Whites still had all or mostly White friends, their adapted 𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻 measure would equal .375, reflecting the fact that having 50% of Whites have all or mostly friends of the same race seems far less likely to have resulted from random chance in a population where Whites make up only 20% of the population, compared to a population where they make up half of the population. While the values produced by the adapted 𝐻𝐻𝐻𝐻 measure do not have the same intuitive interpretation as the original measure, they still allow for a comparison of the homophily of different groups on campus which accounts for their varying incidences in the population. The adapted score would equal 1 if all individuals of a given race had all or mostly friends of their own race. Homophily scores can also be negative, suggesting that individuals of a given group have a propensity to disassociate from one another. A value of -1 is the lowest possible score, implying that no individuals of a given race have all or mostly friends of their own race.

Tables B1 and B2 show the two componenty of the Hi score and the calculated score itself for each group discussed in Table 9 of the main report, seperatly for the 2016 and 2018 surveys. Note that for international students (of any race) the Hi score was calculated in reference to the proportion of friends who were also international students (of any race).

Table B1: Homophily Calculations for 2016 Survey

These data show that, in both years, Black students have the highest Hi score and whites have the second highest. Hispanic students have the lowest Hi score in both years and, in fact, have a negative score in 2016. Although the Hi scores for Asian students declined substantially between 2016 and 2018, Asians had the third highest Hi score among the four racial/ethnic groups in both years. Thus the substantive results of this analysis confirm those presented in Table 9 of the main report.
