Co-Presidents’ MessageDear Members,Welcome to the 2012-13 Year!

This year will prove to be exciting with our innovativeprogramming under the direction of Programming VP GladysSimon. Membership VPs, Joyce Gordon and Kathleen Witkinsurpassed our goal last year and hope to exceed our upcomingnumbers for this year through creative retention and newmember events. BNC - Chapter prides itself on our varied andunique Study Groups. The VPs coordinating this area are SueAdatto, Daron Barness and Sara Leopold. As we approach thisnew Study Group season, we wish to provide a brief background into BNC Study Groups.Almost 60 years ago, in the 1955 meeting of the National Executive Committee of the Brandeis University NationalWomen's Committee, Hannah Abrams, a founding member, brought up the idea of providing cultural andeducational programs for its members. The idea was adopted. University professors wrote syllabi that were offeredto BNC members. Three subjects were chosen: Education, Diplomatic History of the US and Great Novels. In 1956, the National Executive Committee wrote: "It is hoped that Study Groups will be the thing to link chaptersto the University." From the inception, the subjects grew in scope to include World Drama, Faith of Islam,Feminism and Family in Literature to gourmet classes, etc.As you read this year's study group guide, you will see that the subject areas are vast and the number of individualstudy groups is impressive. These Study Groups are a combination of ones continuing from prior years, new StudyGroups formed and led by our very own members, and Study Groups based on a wealth of resources suppliedby the Brandeis National Committee. The BNC is indebted to the faculty of Brandeis University for the preparation of the courses of study and forinvaluable assistance in developing this significant area of its work as the University itself continues to make itsimportant contribution to American education. From the beginning, the one requirement to attend is that one must be a paid-up member of the BNC. A guestmay attend a study group once for a fee and then the requirement is to join the organization. Our Study Groupshave lived up to the original expectation. Programming differs from Study Groups in that they are stand-alone special events whereas a study group meetsat least two times in a season. The work of both our VP of Programming and our team of Study Group VPs, alongwith their committees, are to be commended and are greatly appreciated. We look forward to meeting you and hope you find the study groups and programs that are perfect for you.

Sincerely,Lori Roth and Marcy StraussCo-Presidents, Phoenix Chapter, BNC

Please remember to bring yournon-perishable food items to allBNC events to help the PVEmergency Food Bank.

Michael Willrich, professor of history, has been selected by theOrganization of American Historians (OAH) to receive the 2012 LawrenceW. Levine Award, given annually for the best book in American culturalhistory. Founded in 1907, the OAH is the largest learned society andprofessional organization dedicated to the teaching and study of theAmerican past. The award committee said that "Pox: An AmericanHistory" is a beautifully written account of the smallpox epidemics thatripped through American cities at the turn of the century. The virus killedrelatively few, but as Willrich explains so well, the organized response to

those few deaths had lasting effects on culture, law and politics. His "wonderful ability to account forthe ideas and actions of ordinary people and to capture the struggles over power in their daily livespersuaded the committee that the book deserved an award that honored Lawrence Levine."

Brandeis University is a private, coeducational, nonsectarian institution of higher learning named in

honor of the distinguished U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis. Founded in 1948 bymembers of the American Jewish community, the university today combines the breadth andscope of a world-class research university and the intimacy and accessibility of a small liberalarts college.

Consistently ranked among the nation’s best universities, Brandeis is widely recognized forthe excellence of its teaching, the quality and diversity of its student body and theoutstanding research of its faculty. In 1985 Brandeis was nominated and elected tomembership in the Association of American Universities, which represents the 61 leadingresearch universities in the United States and Canada.

Students who succeed at Brandeis are self-motivated, curious and open to exploring newexperiences that might test them. They take responsibility for their personal, social andintellectual choices, embrace the pursuit of higher knowledge, believe in the value ofmultidisciplinary studies and collaborative learning and share an abiding commitment tosocial justice. Undergraduates can choose from among 43 majors and 45 minors; manystudents opt to pursue multiple majors or minors.

The Brandeis community, representing more than 100 nations, consists of 3,400undergraduates and 2,000 graduate students, more than 350 full-time faculty and more than1,000 administrators and staff members. In addition to the College of Arts and Sciences, which confers undergraduate as well as graduate degrees, the university is also home to TheHeller School for Social Policy and Management, the Brandeis International Business Schooland the Rabb School of Continuing Studies. In addition, Brandeis has more than 30 researchinstitutes and centers that contribute to the academic life of the campus.

Brandeis also has a rich athletic tradition. Theuniversity fields intercollegiate teams in nine men’sand ten women’s sports. Brandeis is one of eightDivision III schools that compete in the UniversityAthletic Association.

Brandeis is located in Waltham, Mass., just nine mileswest of Boston. The 235-acre campus is notable forits contemporary architecture, which is evident innearly all of its more than 100 academic andresidential buildings.
