COPY2.2 How We Write It
To maintain consistency and clarity, please follow the preferred style guides below.
As a general rule, use the University of Cincinnati (UC) Foundation on first reference. Subsequent
references and in headlines, use UC Foundation or the foundation. Never UCF.
2.3 News Writing
For news writing, follow the Associated Press (AP) Stylebook and Libel Manual and Merriam-
Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition. When AP style doesn’t answer the question,
refer to the Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition.
Consult the University of Cincinnati’s style guide for content specific to the university. It’s
available online at uc.edu/ucomm/resources/stylebook.
2.4 Formal Messaging
For formal writing, including invitations and letters, consult UC’s style guide. For titles, refer to
Honor & Respect: The Official Guide to Names, Titles, and Forms of Address and Merriam-Webster’s
Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition.
