What can I get away with? H1: Trust is more salient for women in pro-environmental behaviors High Trusting women are more likely to report pro-environmental behaviors than low-trusting women. Protestant Fundamentalism -Fundamentalism Undermines Trust H1: Trust is more salient for women in pro-environmental behaviors H2: Fundamentalism will reduce pro-environmental behaviors for women, but have no effect for men. Data and Methods General Social Survey 2010 National Sample Collected by the National Opinion Research Center Total N=587 for our analyses Dependent Variable Environmental Cooperation Personal Responsibility (Direct) Recycling Driving less Reduce energy consumption at home Buying environmentally friendly products Reducing or reusing water Environmental Cooperation Political Participation (Indirect) Give money to an environmental group Signed a petition Member of an environmental group Variables of Interest -Identifies as Born-Again -Encouraged others to accept Jesus as their savior -Biblical Literalist Protestant Fundamentalism Results Higher trusting women are more likely to participate in environmental cooperation than lower trusting women. There are no differences for men. Personal Responsibility Fundamentalist women are less likely to participate in environmental cooperation than non-Fundamentalist There are no differences for men. Personal Responsibility Higher trusting women are more likely to participate in environmental cooperation than lower trusting women. Political Participation Fundamentalist women are less likely to participate in environmental cooperation than non-Fundamentalist There are no differences for men. Political Participation Conclusions 1)When making decisions about cooperation, trust is salient for women, but not for men. 2)Fundamentalism reduces the propensity for women to participate in environmental cooperation, but this effect does not hold for men. 3)Protestant Fundamentalism promotes rigid gender roles often associated with the Feminine Mystique, and we find that these roles among other things have negative effects on womens trust and cooperation.
