2020 Annual ReportBRANDON UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION

In preparation for this message, I spent some time reflecting on last year’s greetings. I indicated at that time that I was sending the Annual Report with “mixed blessings” as we were in the midst of responding to the COVID 19 pandemic. We had moved all classes off campus and were offering spring and summer courses by distance only. It seems like a long time has passed, and much has happened since then. We’ve had some challenges, and other developments have been far more optimistic.

This past year has demonstrated the benefits of investment in sciences, including health care and pedagogy, the science of education, as well as the liberal arts, including music. Science is a wonderful thing, and the fact that vaccines were developed in less than a year is a testament to the scientific community. In a pandemic of this nature, we cannot underscore the importance of science. It has taught us the benefits of wearing masks, keeping an appropriate distance from each other, and the importance of washing our hands. Of course, the scope of the pandemic is new to us, we should anticipate that scientists too are learning as we go, and therefore not be surprised with changes in scientific expectations.

At the same time, the benefits of the humanities and social sciences have also

become more evident to people outside of the academic community. Science has demonstrated that masks help stop the spread, but it is the social sciences that encourage people to change their behaviour. The humanities have helped us to live in a more remote world and to realize that we are not alone. They have allowed us to better understand the toll that this has taken on our mental health and have provided us with tools to lessen the impact of stress.

All of this has highlighted the important work that is being done at Brandon University and other post-secondary institutions. We must continue to educate the next generation of leaders. We know that no matter how the world might look in a year or so, it will be a very different place. We will need these future leaders for many reasons, including to help regrow our economy in a post-pandemic world.

We also need social engagement. Artists and craftspeople will be just as critical as accountants in maintaining a diverse society. The pandemic has also raised the ugly spectre of discrimination, and we know that a well-educated society is a more tolerant and understanding society.

This past year saw a very different style of course delivery with the majority of our classes online. Our amazing faculty delivered courses in new ways, and our students did the best they could to work from home. Our staff delivered many of their critical services in new ways as well.

We also understood that many students did not have secure access to internet and/or computers. Thanks to our library, IT and student services, we had laptops available for students and safe places to learn on campus.

Of course, not all material can be delivered online. Many science labs, nursing labs, and music and fine arts studios were all conducted on campus with the highest public health standards in place. The campus may have been closed to the public, but it was certainly open for learning.

It is hard to say at the moment what the fall term will look like, but we know it will be guided by the best scientific advice available. At the same time, we have made several improvements to campus that will facilitate some re-opening.

This critical work could not have been undertaken without the support of the Foundation and all of our stakeholders. Resources to make these changes have come from the province and our supporters. Donations to the student emergency fund have been most generous and have allowed students who lost out on work opportunities to continue with their studies.

So yes, we need the Arts and Sciences, we need Music, we need Health Studies who are producing the students who are working in a pandemic world, and we need our future educators to be prepared to teach young Manitobans in a new and challenging environment. But we also need you… and you have risen to the cause in a way that is incredibly touching and humbling.

Brandon University is blessed to have the support of so many alumni and friends. As this report will indicate, when the need was there, you helped fill it. On behalf of all of us at BU, thank you!

Sincerely,

Dr. David Docherty

President and Vice-Chancellor

GREETINGS FROM THE BU PRESIDENT

On many levels this has been a very difficult year due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Despite this, Brandon University Foundation had a fairly successful year financially. The Foundation granted the University $3.04 million, up $170,000 from the previous year. Since 1980 the total the Foundation has granted to BU is $62 million. Our business is student success, and these disbursements help our students to be successful.

The donors, alumni, faculty, staff and friends of Brandon University are a caring and generous group, and I thank them for their gifts made through the BU Foundation. You will read some great examples of this generosity in the stories within this publication. One of these stories started in 1967 with Brandon University’s first chancellor, Mr. Maitland Steinkopf, and his

family’s connection to BU. In another story you’ll read about June Sprott, a fellow graduate and friend of mine from Winnipeg, and how she is able to maximize her tax benefits through gifts of securities, really making her donations work in her interests. And you will read about Wendy Menzies. I remember Wendy as a classmate from Lee Clark’s first year Canadian history course, and was saddened to hear of her passing last year. The award that her family has established in her memory is a wonderful way to honour Wendy and her connection to Brandon University.

We are pleased to recognize a number of donors who are new members of the Order of the Sheaf, and we happily recognize those who have advanced to a new level. Their names are highlighted in the back pages of this report. I mentioned in my report last year that we are looking forward to an in-person banquet when it is safe to recognize this generosity. We still are looking forward to that date.

Our Foundation members have had a trying year. Everyone has missed the in-person coffee visits, social events and the Foundation functions. Nonetheless, we have developed patience and a sense of humour with our Zoom meetings, and we have persevered!

We have a number of Foundation members whose terms of service are concluding. I thank them for donating their time, effort and hard work at our regular meetings and for serving on varying committees of the Foundation. And I commend them for their part in shaping the future of the organization.

I have finished my final year as your Foundation president, and I want to introduce you to Dwight Conroy, the incoming BU Foundation President. He is well known to Brandon and western Manitoba. At our meetings his observations are insightful, he is passionate, and he brings with him a sense of humour. I know you will really enjoy getting to know him.

At a BU Homecoming dinner several years ago, alumnus Andreas Souvaliotis from the class of 1984 concluded his speech with the message to remember BU the next time you change your will. I thought that was good advice, and I will conclude by asking you to think about BU in your planned giving.

On behalf of the Foundation Board, thank you and stay safe.

Sincerely,

Robert R. McLennan ’75

More than $300,000 raised through Annual Fund AppealThanks to the generosity of BU alumni and friends, $309,279 was contributed to the Annual Fund in 2020.

Each year, contributions received through this appeal provide support that is critical to helping BU meet its needs and enhancing the educational experience for our students. Gifts directed to the area of greatest need provide the flexibility to use the funds when and where they are most needed. Contributions to scholarships and bursaries, departments, a faculty or school, or to other areas of importance to our donors enhance our programs and services for students, and significantly increase the amount of student awards available for our scholars.

Siblings David Wilson, BA ’59

and June Thompson (neé

Wilson), BA ’68, BEd ’73, are

honouring their family’s

musical background with the

establishment of the Charles

& Marion Wilson Memorial

Scholarship-Bursary in Music.

This scholarship in memory

of their parents will provide

funding for School of Music

students with academic

merit, financial need, and a

demonstrated dedication to a

career in music.

Charles Robert Wilson and Marion Dolena Wilson (neé MacKay) were both raised in large families where music was a constant influence and both became amateur musicians. They each took lessons as adults, Charles in voice and Marion in piano, and they first met as choristers at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Brandon’s east end.

Despite the financial constraints of a depression and a world war, their five children were each offered professional lessons (piano/organ, voice, violin, accordion, and French horn) and each became involved in the musical life of Brandon, from serving as summer organist in five different churches to running the records/sheet music department of the P. A. Kennedy Company. Marion and Charles always made time to attend Christmas concerts at the church, school concerts, the Brandon Festival of the Arts, and all of the recitals in which their children participated. Singing played an important role in all of the Wilson reunions and gatherings.

June has always felt that the greatest gifts she received from her parents were her sense of humour and an appreciation for music. While growing up in Brandon she studied piano, and she worked part-time at the School of Music as a Brandon University student. She then moved to Winnipeg to pursue a career as an English teacher and teacher librarian in the River East School Division. She received her ARCT in voice performance and has given many recitals to raise money for various charities.

Although he had studied piano with several professors on the faculty of Brandon College, David graduated in 1959 before music degrees were offered through the College. His musical contributions to Vincent Massey and Harrison high schools in Brandon included directing choirs, producing and directing 42 musicals, and organizing workshops for music teachers from across Western Canada. His contribution to the musical life of the

nation were recognized by his induction into the Order of Canada in 1991.

David and June, along with the other two surviving members of the Wilson family, continue their support of musical activity in their respective homes of Brandon, Winnipeg, Toronto, and Ottawa.

Maitland Steinkopf, MBE, QC, LL.B., served as

Brandon University’s first Chancellor from 1967

until his passing in 1970. A businessman and

politician, he also served as a cabinet member, and

a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba.

In 1990 Maitland’s sister, Maxine Ellend, established an endowment in his memory. The Maitland Steinkopf Humanities Endowment has supported department operations in the humanities discipline, providing for such things as funding for students to present at conferences in Florida, Bosnia and South Africa, bringing various visiting speakers to the BU campus and other opportunities for students that are not planned for in the annual operating budget.

Maxine passed away at the age of 102 in 2019 and BU has received the generous bequest she established in her will to be added to the Maitland Steinkopf Humanities Endowment she established 30 years ago. Her gift will allow even more opportunities to come to fruition in the future, making it possible to promote scholarship in ways that benefit both students and faculty, as well as the larger BU community.

Alumna June Sprott (neé Cosgrove), TTC ’64, ’75, ’77, grew up on a farm near Napinka in southwest Manitoba. Her parents stressed the value of education, and, because of them, she decided to attend Brandon College.

June considers the time she spent at Brandon College/University as an immensely positive experience that provided her with many opportunities in life. She taught for more than 35 years — the first three years in Minto, MB followed by teaching in various Winnipeg schools, and one year on a teacher exchange in Scotland. She served as president of Seven Oaks School Division Teachers’ Association and was also president of the Manitoba chapter of DKG, an International Teachers Organization.

Over the years June felt that contributing to Brandon University would help others

to have career and life opportunities as well. More recently, she became aware that gifts of publicly traded securities (stocks, bonds and mutual funds) could be donated “in-kind”, with no expense to her, and a savings on the capital gains taxes she would have paid had she sold the shares.

June now makes her contributions to BU through the donation of mutual funds and receives a charitable tax receipt for the full value of the funds received by Brandon University Foundation.

Of her donations via mutual funds, June says, “This is one especially easy way for me to share with others at BU and pass on the values stressed by my parents.”

Currently, she and her husband Brian are looking forward to more overseas travel when restrictions allow and it is safe to do so, and for June to resume volunteering as a Goldwing Ambassador at Richardson International Airport.

For more information on donating gifts of securities, talk to your financial advisor, and contact the Office of Advancement at 204-727-7374 for the required forms.

Wendy Menzies, BMus ’99, began teaching music on the family farm near Roland, MB. She attended Brandon University’s Faculty of Education and later returned to complete her Bachelor of Music, while simultaneously raising her four children. Wendy taught in the Eckhardt-Gramatté Conservatory of Music at Brandon University for many years until her passing in March of 2020.

Wendy was an energetic person with a contagious enthusiasm. She loved teaching and maintained her own music studio throughout her life. As an instructor, she focused on positive encouragement, while passionately pursuing skill development within her students. Wendy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and teacher. She lived life with joy and gratitude. It was important to her to live each day fully and with mindfulness. Her greatest joy was spending time with her husband, Bruce, her children and her beloved granddaughters.

Wendy’s family established the Wendy Menzies Award in her honour to continue her lifelong love and commitment to the development of young musicians. Collective contributions on behalf of her family will provide an annual award of more than $1,100 to a new or returning student of the Eckhardt-Gramatté Conservatory of Music who may face accessibility barriers to their musical education.

Sharing the Gift of Music

Wendy and Bruce Menzies with their granddaughters

Wendy Menzies was an extraordinary citizen,

musician, and person. Her impact on our

community of music educators cannot be overstated. As

a young music student, you could not imagine a more

dedicated, tireless and supportive teacher. Wendy's influence

continues in our Conservatory through the contributions

and achievements of her students. They receive recognition

with outstanding performances in the annual Conservatory

Scholarship Auditions and bring joy and sincere fascination

to their teachers each week.

Though I first came to know and love Wendy as a young

child, I was privileged to have her influence through many

stages of my life, both personal and professional. Wendy

introduced me to Prof. Megumi Masaki and helped me

make the decision to pursue my BMus degree at Brandon

University. When I started my teaching career at the

Eckhardt-Gramatté Conservatory of Music in 2015, Wendy

and I shared a teaching studio. As we would share stories

about the brilliant young people we had the privilege to

work with, Wendy would usually tell me excitedly "I just

have the best students" – and of course, that was true. They

were the best students because they were all so excited to

share their discoveries, questions, and triumphs with their

compassionate, sincere and inspiring teacher.

On behalf of the Conservatory, I am privileged to thank

Bruce and family for creating The Wendy Menzies Award

in her honour. Thanks to their generosity, we will be able to

offer deserving students substantial assistance on the basis

of accessibility, financial need and high achievement. Wendy

would be delighted to know that her proud legacy of helping

students celebrate the joys of music and community-building

will continue for decades to come.

The A. E. McKenzie Legacy Society is named in honour of Dr. Albert Edward McKenzie. The owner of a Brandon seed firm, he led a committee of the Chamber of Commerce in the 1930s whose task it was to keep Brandon College open, often traveling with the College President, Dr. J. R. C. Evans, to help raise much-needed funds. He was the first person to leave a legacy gift to the institution. This gift, given at the height of the Depression, saved the College from certain closure.

Many others have since generously supported Brandon University through gifts in their will, gifts of life insurance, or through other methods of legacy giving, each making a significant impact on our institution. We are pleased to thank and recognize the following members of the A. E. McKenzie Legacy Society.
