Yes that’s right, on Saturday 21st May we set off on our 100k trek from London to Oxford in great spirits. Alas, that didn’t last long as one of our members thought it was a good idea to put the 'official' bar code in a plastic bag. e scanner wouldn’t work, he took an age to sort it out, we crossed the start line in last place. Not a race though we said. We passed the 10K sign without a care in the world and the 1st checkpoint soon followed. In great spirits at Maidenhead we even broke into song (you can hire us as a quartet for special occasions). At checkpoint 2 we met up with our support crew for the first time. Aſter hot soup we were on our way again. All was going well, then the rain kicked in, we reached the halfway point tired and soaked through. Here, we enjoyed a hot plate of lasagne before setting off again into the night. We were down to three by this point as one of our team had the good sense to know when enough is enough. e night section of the trek was gruelling to say the least as the route leſt the ames and made its way along the Chiltern Way, dark woods and tough inclines were all starting to hurt. At least the rain had stopped. It wasn’t all bad though, we had some laughs along the way. As a team we have to thank our support crew, Ellen, Hannah, Jan and Lorna. Without whom we would not have got through this, they kept us going with supplies (special mention for Ellen’s Bacon Baps) and encouragement, they were simply the best support crew there. So much so that I believe some of them are volunteering to run the next event for the BHF, you just knew they’d take over. WE DID IT! But never, ever, ever again……..

Yes that’s right, on Saturday 21st May we set off on our

100k trek from London to Oxford in great spirits. We knew it was an endurance test and not a race but were in great spirits as we actually took up pole position at the start. Alas, that didn’t last long as one of our members thought it was a good idea to put the 'official' bar code in a plastic bag. The scanner wouldn’t work, he took an age to sort it out, we crossed the start line in last place. Not a race though we said.

We passed the 10K sign without a care in the world and the 1st checkpoint soon followed. In great spirits at Maidenhead we even broke into song (you can hire us as a quartet for special occasions). At checkpoint 2 we met up with our support crew for the first time. After hot soup we were on our way again. All was going well, then the rain kicked in, we reached the halfway point tired and soaked through. Here, we enjoyed a hot plate of lasagne before setting off again into the night. We were down to three by this point as one of our team had the good sense to know when enough is enough.

The night section of the trek was gruelling to say the least as the route left the Thames and made its way along the Chiltern Way, dark woods and tough inclines were all starting to hurt. At least the rain had stopped.

It wasn’t all bad though, we had some laughs along the way.

As a team we have to thank our support crew, Ellen,

Hannah, Jan and Lorna. Without whom we would not have got through this, they kept us going with supplies (special mention for Ellen’s Bacon Baps) and encouragement, they were simply the best support crew there. So much so that I believe some of them are volunteering to run the next event for the BHF, you just knew they’d take over. Count us out ladies, as we said at the beginning - never, ever, ever again!

The most important thing of all is that we managed to raise

a whopping £2552.00, so far, for the British Heart Foundation, thanks to your kind donations – THANK YOU.

Introduction

We somehow managed to have our Summer - all three days of it - ahead of schedule, so please enjoy this month's issue from the comfort of your own, warm home, lest you brace the bitter winds of the month that is June. All the usual suspects are featured in this month's issue, however Roger decided to replace his usual column with details on The Servant Queen. Be sure to check that out and enjoy the rest of the issue!

Observation A surreal seasonApologies in advance if you're not a fan of football, as that has un-intentionally become this column's focal point. I might try to force myself to talk about something else next month but I wouldn't put any money on it.

You shouldn't judge something before you have got to know a bit more about it. Having gone to Stamford Bridge last month, graced with little more than a terrible view (pictured) and a fellow spectator who was literally vaping on me, I can now confidently come to the conclusion that Chelsea Football Club is indeed the disaster I had anticipated prior. When they said it would be an infectious atmosphere I didn't realise they meant that I'd catch the flu from the guy sneezing behind me.

Despite my hatred for the club (one or two of their fans are alright I guess), I can't deny how exciting it was to be at the game that handed Leicester City the Premier League title - arguably the greatest sporting achievement in history. It felt very odd being the only person in the stand not really celebrating when Chelsea scored; an emotion perhaps only paralelled with when I was the only white person working in an Indian restaurant. How I end up in these kind of circumstances, I don't know.

Regardless, at the final whistle it was a special moment. Chelsea had prevented their closest rivals, Tottenham, from having a chance at winning the league. In hindsight it feels dirty to have been amid the vaping and the hurling of abuse at the Spurs fans, but at the time it was interesting to say the least.

Meanwhile, on local turf myself and many others from the yellow & blue army enjoyed the greatest season for Oxford United in recent memory; certainly in my lifetime. It was a privilege to be at the final few home games as The Yellow's gained promotion to League One. One thing I don't understand is why they always try to prevent pitch invasions from occurring at the end of the last game.

The poor fella's attempts over the sound system at dissuading the fans from running onto the pitch were in vain as hundreds piled on Kassam Stadium's green grass, celebrating the best conclusion to one of the strangest football seasons.

With all these expectations being defied, would it be otherworldly to suggest that England will win the Euro's this year? Actually yes, it probably would because we all know that that is one thing that will definitely never happen, but perhaps it's only a matter of time before a yet-to-be-established Cassington team hold aloft the Premier League trophy.

Sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself. I meant Champions League.

Roy’s ramblings

I just hope we choose right, to get away from Euro dictates. One thing they have never done is produce their accounts for the world to see.

We stood alone before, we can do it again. Where has the fighting spirit gone? We always were the best and can be again. I hope I don't upset too many people.

What a wonderful gathering to say good-bye to Kath and family - what have these Essex Girls got? June came from Essex, they both seem to have captivated many hearts, one did especially mine.

I am sure Bike Night will be special. Sorry I can't help, but I wish you all a wonderful evening. I always said, when I looked after the Green, that at Bike Night I could always guarantee it would be cleaner than the rest of the year. June always said I looked after the Green better than our lawns. Even as I write this, our old weather glass read rain, and sure it is, at least it is always a cause to moan or cheer. Whichever way you look at it, (the weather) is always a topic of conversation if you get stuck for something to talk about.

I can feel for the lads and lasses who feel they are the ones who don't fit in. Frankly, I was no good at night school. Luckily, I was told to leave. I was the first boy in our group to be put to work on his own. The Good Lord gave me the aptitude to repair almost anything. I have not looked back.

How are these youngsters dealt with? Because everything seems so techincal now. I dread to think what would have happened to me. I think the poem we had at June's funeral says it all:

Be The Best of Whatever You AreIf you can't be a pine on top of the hill

Be a scrub in the valley, but beThe best little scrub by the side of the rill;

Be a bush if you can't be a tree.

If you can't be a bush, be a bit of the grass,Some highway happier makes;

If you can't be a muskie, then just be a bass -But the liveliest bass in the lake!

We can't all be captains, we've got to be crew,There's something for all of us here,

There's big work to do, and there's lesser to do,And the task we must do is near.

If you can't be the highway then just be a trail,If you can't be the sun, be a star;

It isn't by size that you win or you fail - BE THE BEST OF WHATEVER YOU ARE!

This was sent to me by a very good teacher on business. Unfortunately, with business expanding, I lost touch with him and his wife which I have regretted very much.

One final quote, very often used by my Dad: 'Trust in the Lord, but keep your gun powder dry'. People have said to him 'don't you trust him then?'. Dad said 'I most definitely do, but if you don't do your bit to help, why should the Lord help you?' There you are, enough of me this time. God Bless.

Desert Island DiscsLast month’s castaway was Jane Bishop, correctly guessed by eight people! Only one could be the first to guess correctly though, and that person is Nigel Fancourt - congratulations! Do you think you know who this month's castaway is? Email us at [email protected]. 1. Lily the Pink – The Scaffold: This reminds me of my childhood, when we used to sing it in the playground, and I still know all the words by heart.

2. Life on Mars – David Bowie: The first album I bought was Ziggy Stardust so I’d have to take a David Bowie track. Although it is hard to choose just one I think it would be this one – it’s such a classic.

3 - Are you Lonesome Tonight - Elvis Presley: When I was a baby and wouldn’t go to sleep my mother would

put on the radio and if Elvis came on then I would shut up. I clearly had good taste – and I still love his voice and music. It is difficult to choose just one of his tracks, and I did think I should go for a song I could dance to – as I love a good bop – but I am an old romantic, so it has to be this one!4 - Pomp and Circumstance March no 4 – Elgar: A truly rousing piece that I would put on if I am in need of some moral fortitude! 5 - I know that my Redeemer Liveth – Handel’s Messiah: A beautiful aria that sends my heart soaring.6 - How lovely are thy Dwellings – Brahms Requiem: I love singing choral music and this is probably my favourite piece.7 - Like an Angel Passing through my room – sung by Anne Sofie Von Otter from the album For the Stars that she made with Elvis Costello: This is an extraordinary album that I bought on a whim and absolutely love. This song was actually written by Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus of Abba fame!8 - Spartacus adagio – Khachaturian This piece was used for the programme the Onedin Line, and as I listen to it I shall see my tall ship coming over the horizon to rescue me!

The book I choose is “Seven Ages – Poetry for a Lifetime” chosen by David Owen. This is one of the best poetry collections I have ever seen, and contains all the classics as well as some lesser known poems and prose. Poetry is food for the soul, and so, although I shall be starving, as I am going to be completely useless at catching my own food, at least my soul will be nourished!

I found it very difficult to choose a luxury, as there are so many things I am going to miss. But eventually I decided to take a piano! I don’t play at all well – I can just about pick out a tune – but maybe on a desert island I shall learn to play.

Teenage angst Give reasoning for your answer Dear Roy,

thank you for your response to my previous article. It's really great to hear that you've suffered similarly to myself, you too have had to try to conquer the challenge that is adolescence and the unknown. I had never really considered that other people had been in my situation, I always thought I was giving people an insight into a life that very few understood, when in fact it is quite the contrary. Teenage angst is something that we all share; past, present, or future - we all will suffer from teenage angst.

And with that in mind my angst this month is 100% exams.

A constant cloud of rain that pours nothing but stress, apprehension and depression. A curse upon any and all teenagers that lingers year round until it becomes an inevitable force of disappointment. You spend years learning about the most pointless, insignificant information imaginable: the formation of a river terrace, the uncodified nature of our constitution, the significance of theatre in 17th century France and you do all this just to be asked an outrageous 40 marker on rainfall in Thailand.

It's these seemingly aimless tests that not only determine the rest of your life but ones entire mood. I find that not only do I have to battle with exams, but the pressure they put on me. I tend to ignore this pressure, but that's a story for my psychologist.

However, ignoring me for a moment, others enslave themselves for months just constantly piling in pointless facts about pointless topics just to get 'that grade'. Why can't we educate without having to examine? Exams for me prove nothing; by now I know my own capabilities, what areas I'm stronger in than others. Exams don't make me smarter, or more job ready, or more gifted, or more grounded, or more

experienced, or more healthy, or more appreciative, they don't make me happy, or excited, or confident or optimistic or self-assured. They make me feel hopeless and drag me down, exams sap all inspiration for the

future they are supposed to set me up for. And yet, despite all this, my angst is once again insignificant, this morbid depressive state that I currently live under even with its seemingly fatal control on ones life; it's just simply angst we have all shared. Past, present, or future exams happen to everyone for just a couple of months and then they finish and one then becomes the same as everyone else in the world - another tiny spec of human who did a couple of exams in their teens.

This is of course teenage angst.

Why should the public have a say in what research gets funded and how? Surely doctors and researchers know best? Would you want to influence research tackling your own illness? And what impact does involving “lay” people have on questions being asked and money being spent?

The play, a comedy drama, explores the complexities of patient and public involvement through the eyes of two teenagers with very different ways of confronting a future made uncertain by a serious medical condition.

Entry is FREE. To book a place please use the link below: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/people-are-messy-a-new-play-about-patient-and-public-

It will appeal to audiences of all ages and will bring the issues to a whole new audience nationwide. Please join us!A £54m project to upgrade a stretch of the A40 into Oxford into a dual carriageway has been agreed. Plans to widen the road to ease the "chronic congestion" between Witney and Eynsham were agreed by Oxfordshire County Council on Tuesday. A further bus lane in both directions along the road between the park and ride at Eynsham and the Duke's Cut canal bridge will also be added. The authority said the plans would now be used to seek government funding. An estimated 30,000 vehicles use the route between Oxford and Witney each day, according to the authority. County Councillor Ian Hudspeth, Leader of Oxfordshire County Council, said: "The only way to get to Oxford by road at the moment is to sit in chronic congestion - that has to be tackled. "We understand the frustrations of users of this major route." Prime Minister David Cameron, the MP for Witney has previously described the A40 as "a bit of a foot on the windpipe of west Oxfordshire economy".

Over  three  terms  we  will  study,  observe  and  learn  how  plays  are  made,  try  things  out  ourselves,

and  create  a  group  production  of  our  own.

You  do  not  have  to  be  an  actor  to  take  part  and  you  will  never  have  to  perform  unless  you  actually  want  to.  A  healthy  interest  and  a  sense  of  fun  is  qualification  enough!

If  you  would  like  to  reserve  a  place  on  the  course  for  September,  or  would  like  further

information  please  email  Mandy  -‐  [email protected]

(We  plan  to  meet  up  initially  in  July  for  a  glass  or  two  when  we  have  a  complete  group  list)

Looking forward to a fun-filled, dramatic Autumn term!

OUR NEW PRIEST Father Mark Lagorio has now arrived so please note the new details above.

FATHER MARTIN WRITES: My maternal and paternal grandfathers were Italian: The Lagorio and Picozzi families. They emigrated to Birmingham and Hamilton respectively in the late 19th Century. The two families eventually met during the Second World War. The Picozzi’s made and sold ice cream in Scotland; my grandfather, John Lagorio, is recorded in ‘A History of Birmingham’ as the first in Birmingham to obtain a licence to sell ice cream publicly. I was born in the late fifties and grew up in my home parish of St. Wilfrid’s, Castle Bromwich, just a stone’s throw away from Oscott Seminary. I am one of five children: My parents were devout Catholics. I was accepted for the priesthood by Archbishop Dwyer and ordained at St Wilfrid’s. I have served in different parishes in the North, Midlands, and South of the Archdiocese for the past twenty nine years. I have been in my current parish of St Joseph’s, Thame, for fifteen and a half years. Although very sad to say farewell to the people I have served and loved for so long, I am very much looking forward to getting to know the good people of Eynsham.

WEEKDAY MASS TIMES are now on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays at 9.30am and on Thursdays at 7.00pm. On Fridays the Mass will be followed by Adoration for half an hour.

THE CATHOLIC CHURCH OF ST PETER , EYNSHAM

THE BIBLE SHARE will continue but will now take place on Wednesdays in the Tolkien Room at 10.30am. Anyone can drop in to this. You do not need to be there every week although there is a small group of regulars. We have a cup of tea/coffee and then read together the Bible Readings for the following Sunday and then share what we make of them. This is followed by a short instruction on their background and we finish with a few prayers and the Angelus.

THE EUROPEAN REFERENDUM Philip Giddings will be speaking at St Leonard’s Church, Eynsham on Tuesday June 14th from 8pm till 9.30pm about this and will hopefully answer any questions we may have. Refreshments will be provided. “This will be an unbiased talk - but bias is as much in the ears of the hearer as the lips of the speaker!” Philip retired from the University of Reading in 2011 when he was Head of School of Politics and International Relations. He is a practising Anglican.

Cassington WI We met in the village hall for our May meeting. Our president, Mrs Jane Cook introduced our speaker, Mrs Lynda Warren, from Wiltshire who had arrived with just a few of her many herbs from home. In fact Lynda had over 100 varieties of herbs in her garden! She had some astonishing facts about herbs. Did you know that herbs have been used for 1000’s of years? Five thousand years ago, a king from Mesopotamia specifically grew 64 different herb plants which were used in a variety of ways, including herbal teas. Countries like Egypt, India, Italy and of course not forgetting China all used these plants for soothing, healing and flavouring. The monks in Europe were big users of these plants. Herbs in World War 1 and 2 were all used to treat wounded soldiers. Following questions, Di Williams gave the vote of thanks. We had a break for refreshments and then our president and Di Williams presented us with the two resolutions – one on food waste and the other on hospitalisation for people with dementia. After discussion we voted for both of these resolutions to go forward to the NFWI AGM. Following this, the rest of the business was conducted, including discussing Bike Night. We meet again in June when the speaker will be Lynda Bull, talking to us about stroke prevention.

June 2016

We are actively seeking new children for our Nursery and Foundation Stage for September. We accept children in our Nursery from their third birthday so please drop into school if you are interested. We also accept children from neighbouring villages so if you know of any one with a three year old who may be interested please encourage them to come and see us or phone. We will also be offering ‘Stay

and Play’ sessions for two year olds in September. More details next month.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BEING A GOVERNOR AT OUR SCHOOL? IF YOU ARE PLEASE READ ON…Our governors play a key strategic role in our school and we do not have our full compliment. We have six main meetings a year during term time and a similar number of committee meetings. At the moment we are looking to recruit new Governors who have a church commitment. If you are interested then please contact the school office.

NATIONAL CURRICULUM ASSESSMENTSIf you had come into our school in May you would have noticed a great hush as the children sat their statutory tests in Year 6 and statutory assessments in Year 2. Other year groups were also involved in assessments to check if they had made progress and whether they had reached the National Age Related Expectations. We know that the children have tried as hard as they can and we look forward to the results.

CYCLINGEvery year the children in Year 6 have the opportunity to take a cycling proficiency course which gives them key skills in how to ride a bicycle safely on the roads. You may have seen the children stopping at junctions and practicing manoeuvres supervised by one of our staff and supported by parents. Our roads are increasingly busy and this skill will stand them in good stead in the future.

WEBSITEIf you are interested in what we do at our school then we have a website with information about our activities. You can access our newsletters as well to keep up to date with what we are doing.

SWIMMINGWe will be starting our swimming sessions soon and I thought a brief outline of timings was called for so that our friends and neighbours know what to expect. During the school day there will be various teaching sessions going on especially on Monday after 11am, Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon. There may be occasional sessions on Thursday and Friday afternoons.

The timetable for after school swimming is: • School weekdays. (Monday to Friday inclusive) Pool will be used during usual School hours plus, 3.00pm to 4.15pm. At the lifeguards discretion in hot weather the pool may stay open until 5.30pm at the latest.

• Weekends and School Holidays (Summer...Half Terms etc.) 3.00pm to 4.15pm. At the lifeguards discretion in hot weather the pool may stay open until 5.30pm at the latest.

• There will be no use of the pool on Sunday mornings or between 12.00 noon and 3.00pm OR after 5.30pm.

SAINSBURY ‘ACTIVE KIDS’ VOUCHERSThank you for your support with the Active Kids Vouchers. We have now sent them off and the total was about 7,000 vouchers.

Cassington, then and now

I have some black and white pictures of Cassington, taken in 1960. They could do with enlarging I fear, but if there is anyone interested who would be willing to help this 84 yr. old, I would let you have them for your 'then and now'. I am afraid I am totally incapable of using Facebook!

I also have some more recent, coloured pictures of the preparation for building the new Chequers and the new houses between the Village

Hall and Chequers. If you're interested I will meet up with you and let you decide if the pictures are worth showing.

There are plans to fill the depression but we need to understand that the depression will not get bigger. Discussions are in hand to perhaps dig down and explore the reasons it has appeared. If any of our older residents can remember what might have been here before it might help the understanding. It has been suggested that a blacksmith may have had a pit here?POLLING STATION FOR EU VOTEJust a reminder, the polling station will be in the Sports Pavilion. The Green Waste scheme by WODC will take cuttings away.SOCIAL HOUSING IN CASSINGTONThe Parish Council are considering carrying out another survey to make sure the needs of those residents requiring social housing is understood.
