SPRING 2016 San Carlos Unified School District

Familiy, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) students and Mrs. Leyva from the Secondary school mixed up delicious smoothies made with real fruit for the students to try while they whipped up several flavored smoothies and explained what went into each smoothie.

Several areas focused on exercise while one station had students take turns using the hula hoop while others were running and jumping in place, another station had the students learning how to exercise by using drum sticks to exercise their bodies.

Students were allowed to take any healthy snacks with them they received from the stations. Many students were able to win prizes at a few stations if they guessed the right answer to the nutritional questions by the SFE employees.

All in all, everyone who attended this event left with many healthy treats and learned more about what fats and sugars can do to the body. It was a great event sponsored by SFE and Rice Elementary School!

Southwest Food Excellence Service (SFE) who provides our nutritious lunches for San Carlos Unified School District held a Health Fair in Rice Elementary gym on March 9th , 2016. Representatives from SFE had stations set up around the gym where students learned about nutrition, the health content of foods and how much sugar is in a bottle of Pepsi. Healthy snacks were provided by the cafeteria staff who served up fruit, veggies and various cheeses for the students to eat.

Our Reading Challenge is going full force this year! We are so excited by the number of students who are now participating in turning in their reading logs and meeting the challenge of daily reading. We explain to our students that reading makes their brain smart so that when they grow up they will have many choices for their life.

Over the holiday we told students to read daily and THEY DID!!!!! We had a large number of students who turned in Reading Logs for holiday reading and they earned a McDonald’s Happy Meal coupon for their efforts.

Our Pizza Hut coupon rewards are still being given each month. If a student in Pre k- 2nd grade turns in a weekly log with at least 70 minutes read, they earn a coupon. In grades 3-6 the time read needs to be 105 minutes. In addition, we had our Semester Reading Challenge Awards Ceremony on Jan, 26th to celebrate those students at every grade level who turned in weekly logs at least 80% of the time in the first semester. We will be having another end of the year celebration for those students who turn in reading logs 80% of the weeks for the second semester.

We have begun announcing the Reading Challenge winners each week on KYAY radio, Wednesdays from 3:00-4:00 pm. Please encourage your children to listen for this recognition weekly.

5SPRING 2016 San Carlos Unified School District

Every week, San Carlos Unified School District updates the community on what’s happening in our schools on 91.1.FM San Carlos Apache Radio. This weekly program gives each school an opportunity to highlight special events, give recognition to students and to inform the community on upcoming sporting events or testing blocks for our students.

Laura Kent, Nathan Wright from Rice Elementary School and Terry Antonio from San Carlos Secondary School join Cheryl Mae Haozous from the District Office every Wednesday to share information and news about the schools.

Whether it be an announcement of upcoming tests for the students, or change in a sports schedule, you can be sure to hear about it on the SCUSD Radio Program.

Listen in every week to hear what’s happening in your children’s schools.

Congratulations to Head Coach Terry Antonio for receiving the Co-Coach of the Year award 2016 from the Navajo Times!

Coach Antonio received a plaque and the Navajo Times mentioned that the San Carlos Braves, was the only native boys basketball team to win a 2016 state championship in the state of Arizona.

READING CHALLENGE AT RICE ELEMENTARY

The Reading Challenge is in full spring mode! We have been having Surprise Spring Thursdays! On some Thursdays students are getting a surprise McDonalds’ Happy Meal Coupon when they turn in their reading logs! Students never know which Thursday will be a Surprise Spring Thursday so they need to turn in their Reading Logs EVERY Thursday between now and the end of the school year! We also have Pizza Hut Coupons available for March for those students in grades PreK-2 who read at least 70 minutes in one week of March and in grades 3-6 for those students who read at least 105 minutes for the week.

Every Wednesday we read the previous week’s names of those students who turned in a reading log on KYAY 91.1 Apache Radio! This is an exciting incentive for our students. This spring so far the following numbers of students have turned in their reading logs at each grade level:

PreK-Kinder 86First Grade 102

Second Grade 104Third Grade 91

Fourth Grade 87Fifth Grade 101Sixth Grade 43

This is a grand total of 614 or 61 % of our students! Although we are excited about the number of students participating in the Reading Challenge, we would LOVE to get 100% participation!

We will be sending home reading logs at the end of the school year for our Summer Reading Challenge. We hope that all of our students will continue to read daily over the summer! Reading is the number one thing our students can do to help make their brains stronger and smarter and if they make their brain smart when they are small, they will have many choices for their lives when they grow up! Happy Reading!

6 Empowering graduates with skills to be 21st century Nnee.

Rice Elementary students were introduced to a new way to exercise termed “POUND ROCKOUT WORKOUT” by Tina Flores the Physical Education Coordinator for the San Carlos School District during the recent Health Fair held at Rice Gymnasium.

POUND® IS THE WORLD’S FIRST CARDIO JAM SESSION INSPIRED BY THE INFECTIOUS, ENERGIZING AND SWEAT-DRIPPING FUN OF PLAYING THE DRUMS.

“Unlike other classes that require a certain level of fitness or experience, anyone can pound drumsticks.” Tina said.

“Messing up is not a big deal. Anyone can hold a stick and hit the floor.”

“We even had teachers and staff up and pounding away!”The Carole M. White Physical Education Grant which

was awarded to San Carlos School District provides for teacher training in new ways to get children moving. The PE teachers are all learning POUND and will use it to help the students reach their health and fitness goals.

Numerous studies have proven the powerful brain boosting, stress-relieving effects of drumming. The rhythm of drumming permeates the entire brain to improve focus, increase higher-level thinking and decision-making skills, and boost the immune system, lower blood pressure, decrease chronic pain, anxiety, and fatigue.

“Health, active students make better learners” so get up and POUND!

San Carlos Unified School District would like to thank the community and families for joining us in a joyous celebration to recognize our very own San Carlos Braves for bringing home the 2016 AIA Division V State Championship!

On Friday at noon, a SCUSD celebration for the San Carlos Braves started off with a motorcade. Cars began lining up at the water tanks at the Secondary School. Leading the motorcade was the San Carlos Braves bus with the superintendent close behind the bus. The sixty plus car motorcade proceeded to leave the school at 1:00 pm to drive throughout the San Carlos community, beginning with the Peridot housing divisions, Gilson Wash sub divisions and the Seven Mile district.

Fans stood by on the roadside or in front of their homes waving and cheering for the Braves as the motorcade drove through the housing sub divisions. Signs were posted up in yards, on the roadside and on the fences in downtown San Carlos. It was a great day to be a San Carlos Braves fan!

The motorcade ended up at Rice Elementary School and a lunch was provided after2:00 pm in front of the Primary Cafeteria. Seating was provided in the grassy area in front of the Primary cafeteria.

Ms. Katrina Talkalai SCUSD governing school board president presented the student athletes with a DVD of the championship game. Coach Antonio thanked the community for their support and gave a brief talk about the ride to the championship. Mrs. Steele SCUSD superintendent and Mr. Draper Secondary School Principal thanked the Braves for creating a moment in history that the entire community will remember for a lifetime.

The festivities ended with our San Carlos Braves playing against our district/school staff in a scrimmage game held at 3:00 pm in the Rice Elementary Gym.

Every year, Mrs. Leyva and her students host an Open House for all of the parents of the FCCLA club. The Arizona chapter of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) has a mission to promote personal growth and leadership development through Family and Consumer Sciences Education.

This year, on March 8th, Mrs. Leyva and her students prepared several cuisines and provided dinner for their parents and guardians.

Students provided a Mexican/ Chinese/American Buffet which included Mexican tamales, rice, beans, chow mein, chicken stir fry, egg rolls, smoothies, steak kabobs, pizza and cupcakes.

Mrs. Leyva and her FCCLA club are helping students learn how to cook and prepare meals in the kitchen so that when they go out in the field after high school, they will be able to work in a kitchen environment where they can use their kitchen experience and their Food Handlers Card.

Way to go, Mrs. Leyva and the FCCLA club members for making Open House a success with parents and guests!
