MATTERS OF NOTE Bravewell Awards Grant for Leadership Program in Integrative Healthcare The Bravewell Collaborative recently awarded a $1.4 million grant to Duke Integrative Medicine to create and launch the rst leadership program focused on integrative healthcare in the United States. Set to begin in early 2015, the Leadership Program in Integrative Healthcare at Duke University will train and mentor the next generation of healthcare leaders to transform practice and improve the health of the nation through a patient-centered, personalized, and prevention-oriented approach to medical care. There is an urgent need and unmet demand for world-class executives with the qualications, competencies and leadership attributes to build, sustain and grow integrative healthcare pro- grams and institutions throughout the United States, said Christy Mack, Co- Founder and President of The Bravewell Collaborative, a community of philan- thropists dedicated to bringing about optimal health and healing for indivi- duals and society. The need for change within healthcare has never been greater and the program at Duke will create leaders who can address the changing landscape and implement integrative strategies across a variety of healthcare settings.Integrative healthcare is a rapidly growing and highly credible eld that seeks to integrate the best of Western scientic medicine with a broader understanding of the nature of illness, healing, and wellness. Built on this philosophy of care, the yearlong pro- gram begins with personal transforma- tion and ends with the tools for systems reorganization and change. The course includes three in-person retreats, an extensive online curriculum, and a per- sonal mentorship experience, all result- ing in the creation of a business plan for each participant's unique goals and work environment. This leadership program builds on our mission to bring about optimal health and healing for individuals and society, added Mack. We believe that by shifting the focus of our health care system to preven- tion, health maintenance, early interven- tion and patient-centered care, integrative health care holds the power to not only transform the economic models that impede our present health care system but to vastly improve public health. The Growing Need for Leaders In February 2009, The Bravewell Colla- borative partnered with the Institute of Medicine to convene The Summit on Integrative Medicine and the Health of the Public to examine the scientic basis of integrative healthcare and its poten- tial for improving the health of the nation. Building on key points from the summit, The Bravewell Collabora- tive sought to identify and document the leading models of integrative health- care. As a part of this effort, the group released a survey of U.S. integrative medicine centers last year, nding that 75% reported success using integrative practices to treat chronic pain and more than half reported positive results for gastrointestinal conditions, depres- sion and anxiety, cancer, and chronic stress. The United States spends the most per capita on healthcare across all developed countries, yet lags behind in life expec- tancy and many other health outcome measures. Research shows that integrative healthcare interventions can reduce costs and improve health through increased patient engagement and lower utilization of expensive medical interventions. Healthcare is moving inexorably toward value based, outcomes based care delivery and taking an integrative approach can more rapidly achieve these goals. But this transformation requires more than clinical skills. We need leaders with business acu- men who can think critically, create colla- borative environments, develop strategic approaches to change and inspire excel- lence throughout an organization, said Dr. Adam Perlman, Executive Director of Duke Integrative Medicine. This grant will allow us to build a lasting cohort of new integrative healthcare leaders equipped with the tools to make a signicant impact on the way we practice healthcare in this country. As a collaboration between Duke Integrative Medicine, the Duke Fuqua School of Business, and the Duke Clin- ical Research Institute, the program will include faculty from across the country and cover topics focused on integrative healthcare, leadership training, and busi- ness development. Designed specically for healthcare and hospital executives, physician leaders and other healthcare providers in leadership positions both in the public and private sectors, registration will open in the sum- mer of 2014, with the rst cohort slated to begin in early 2015.
