Despite our high tech, information driven world, we are still innately tied to the land. These paintings are about this relationship. They are an exploration of our evolving and often tenuous union with nature as well as our inherent desire to stay connected to it. Using stainless steel as substrate, these nature-based paintings seek out beauty

and balance in the unification of these two seeming opposites. January 23 – March 29Free Artist Reception: 5-7 p.m., Friday, January 23

Red Rocks was perfect for me—strong academics and small classes led by instructors with real-world experience. Not only was it

appealing, it really ignited something in me.Saling Simon, classical pianist, RRCC alumnus, Harvard class of 2014

Saling tried a different college his freshman year, but it just didn’t click. Then he transferred to Red Rocks Community College, where he immediately found a great fit.

Inspired by his psychology instructor, Saling continued this field of study and later completed his bachelor of science in psychology at Harvard. He credits the rigorous coursework and academic support services at Red Rocks with his success.

The Lakewood Heritage Center (LHC) is a 20th Century Museum that connects the community and its generations to the history and heritage of Lakewood through the care and presentation of authentic artifacts, innovative programming and engaging experiences.

In pursuit of this mission, LHC staff collects and displays appropriate objects in the museum galleries and buildings on site, and some of the buildings are artifacts themselves. Staff also stores, inventories and photographs artifacts in the Conservation & Preservation (CP) Building, which is climate controlled to protect the collection. The building gets its name from preservation, which is a term for the steps staff take that reduce or prevent damage in order to extend the life expectancy of an artifact, and conservation, which refers more specifically to the physical treatment of individual damaged items. For example, conservation could refer to cleaning dirt off of a pair of shoes from the 1920s, while preservation is making sure that the shoes are stored in an appropriate box in an environmentally controlled room with a disaster plan.

Lakewood Heritage Center collects objects because of their historical significance and in support of the museum’s educational mission. While the museum is not actively accepting donations at this time, there are times when specific artifacts are needed to fill an existing gap in the collection. When that happens, LHC reaches out to the public to secure donations.

On these pages are artifacts that Lakewood staff from different areas of expertise chose based on personal interest. Enjoy!

The moment that I saw this 3D planning

illustration, I thought it represented Morse

Park even though there was no title. I was

intrigued by the missing gaps in the object's

information: lack of a date and the changes

from this original design to the park's current

form. While we are still investigating the

creation date for this object, additional

research turned up an opening date of 1955

for the originally named Lakewood Park,

pre-dating city incorporation and boasting

Lakewood's first public swimming pool.

ROSS WILLIAMS, FACILITIES PLANNER

This typewriter is a visual feast, with so many

textures, patterns and shapes to explore. I had

to resist the urge to touch it! I especially enjoy

how the design showcases, rather than hides,

the mechanics of typing. One could depress a

key, watch the corresponding arm rise and see

the letter appear on a page. It's beautiful to see

the "how" of a machine at work.

CATHERINE FOY, ADVERTISING & MEDIA SPECIALIST

The material, rich color and pure elegance of this coat made me smile. It reminded me that there was a time

when daywear was different from evening attire, and evening attire was very different from formalwear. To think of

an auditorium full of women dressed to the nines, all wearing coats like this, puts a beautiful picture in my mind.

MEGAN LOWE, BUSINESS SPECIALIST

One day I was helping

move a shelf in the CP

Building when I saw these

blue handles protruding

from a box on the top

shelf and asked, “What is

that?” The explanation of

it being a hot dog roaster

made me laugh out loud.

It’s a lot of machine for

one function and we have

several items like this in

our collection…

I just think these old

appliances are so fun.

Located on West First Avenue near O’Kane Park, Washington Heights Arts Center enriches the Lakewood

community by offering a dynamic array of cultural arts opportunities for all ages and skill levels. Today’s visitor can participate in the center’s many program offerings including pottery, watercolor, papermaking, jewelry and weaving, to name a few. The building itself, however, has a much richer history. From 1899 to 1968 it served area students as a school and was a place of learning and enrichment.

Washington Heights was originally constructed in 1898 as a one-room rural school on land donated by Thomas M. Patterson, a delegate to the Colorado Territorial Legislature, later to the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., and who also was a United States Senator from 1901 to 1907. Mr. Patterson purchased the property on June 4, 1881, from Charles M. Kellogg for $2,500. The school was named for the old subdivision on which it stands, named and platted in August 1888 by William W. Cover. The boundaries of the school district extended from the west side of Sheridan Boulevard to the east side of Wadsworth Boulevard and from the north side of Alameda Avenue to Tenth Avenue.

From an architectural perspective, Washington Heights reflects the vernacular style of rural schoolhouses of the late 19th century; unadorned walls, hip roof and round-arched windows. The simple design and absence of decorative elements testify to the needs, attitudes and economics that governed education in the area. The original classroom, the largest room in the building, is where pottery classes are held today. A second room was added on the north side sometime between 1911 and 1912. When the second room was added, primary and intermediate pupils were then separated.

In 1917, Margaret Patterson Campbell (who was the daughter of Thomas M. Patterson, the original grantor), clarified the landholdings of District No. 50 through a warranty deed. This enabled construction of the front portion of the schoolhouse. This 1920 addition consisted of two classrooms, a central hall and a basement which is where the furnace room, lunchroom and kitchen were located. Outside ‘outhouses’ were still used until the interior lavatories and hallway were added sometime in the late 1920s. An architectural style change occurred with the large front addition. Colonial Revival was the dominant style for domestic architecture throughout the country during the first half of the 20th century. As rural schools resembled houses, the style was also applied to

schoolhouse construction. In Colorado, the typical expression was a very simple vernacular building with a few classical elements, such as a pediment, fanlight or pilasters, all of which Washington Heights exhibits. The symmetrical façade with a balance of multi-light windows and a centered door added a certain formality to the building, as did the use of the classical elements and boxed eaves.

The building is listed on the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties. By 1968 when the decision was made to move district students to newer buildings it was the oldest continuously operating school in Lakewood and one of the oldest in the country. Foothills Park and Recreation District used the building from 1965-1968 for evening and summer recreation classes and continued to use the building full time from 1968-1998, when it was deeded over to the City of Lakewood. The structure remains the oldest standing school building in Jefferson County and has been referred to as “The Father of the Alameda Area Schools.” Lakewood is proud to recognize the historical significance of Washington Heights and continue its tradition of education with an exciting array of fine arts classes. If you are interested in taking a class or workshop in this very unique locale, please contact the Washington Heights Arts Center at 303.987.5436 or by e-mail at [email protected] or visit www.Lakewood.org/Classes.

Tomáš Kubínek is absolutely delightful. He is full of youthful energy and boundless enthusiasm for his life’s work as a highly innovative and humorous entertainer. Self-described as a “Certified Lunatic and Master of the Impossible,” Tomáš brings his Orchestral Lunacy show to Lakewood Cultural Center on Thursday, May 7 and Friday, May 8, for two special performances with our own Lakewood Symphony. Bravo Editors were lucky enough to spend an afternoon with Tomáš in October to chat about the show and get a glimpse of what audiences can expect to see in May. Because anyone who has been performing since they were 9, in over 30 countries, and once cast over 200 local residents in a production called “The Big Sheboygan Shebang” should not be missed…

BRAVO: We want to hear about what you have in store for Lakewood. But first, what’s this about Sheboygan?

I travel often, taking up artistic residencies. I found myself in Sheboygan one year and decided to help the city put on it’s own variety show of sorts, where anyone, regardless of age, skill or talent, would have a place in the show. I ended up with over 200 area performers, from a herpetologist who was a mechanic by trade, to acrobats, to a local choir of seniors. The age range was 4-92 years old; literally anyone who wanted to be in the show was in the show. We held the performance in a 1500 seat vaudeville theatre and it sold out. There was an old Wurlitzer playing in the lobby when guests entered, the performers were phenomenal, it was really was magic.

BRAVO: That sounds amazing...and insane! How were you able to put it all together?

I’m really good at sharing the light, making people shine and having fun. The result is always funny, collaborative and beautiful. It really was a dream performance for me and for my fellow performers.

BRAVO: Switching gears, how did “Orchestral Lunacy” come about?

I felt that the symphony could use a little irreverence and lunacy to engage a larger audience. I found myself thinking a lot about how to make it charming and funny, yet still honor the music. The result is a program that really honors the music while breaking down the walls of stuffiness and really entertaining people.

We're handing "Certified Lunatic" Tomáš Kubínek the keys to our theater. Buckle up!

Page 23: Bravo Lakewood January - April 2015

January-April 2015 | BRAVO LAKEWOOD 23

BRAVO: What can our audience expect?

A show that is charming, friendly, zany, accessible, funny, collaborative and beautiful. I act as a drawbridge to the audience, engaging the musicians so that they smile, laugh and have fun, and then their music really shines. When we did the premiere tour of this symphony show, the concertmaster said it was the most fun she’s had in years, and also commented that the show left her thoroughly exhausted.

BRAVO: From laughing?

Well, let’s just say this — the first night of the run, I was popping beers on stage with the conductor. On the second night, the entire brass section popped beers. It was mayhem.

BRAVO: What do you think makes the pairing of comedy and music so effective?

Laughter gets everyone breathing together, music gets them feeling. When those things come together, the combination is hilarious, and it also goes deep on an emotional level. Laughter is miraculous — it never gets old.

BRAVO: How does the orchestra respond?

From outright mutiny to falling on their instruments.Honestly, it seems like it’s a breath of fresh air for them and they’re having a ball. With this performance I feel like audiences are getting a new take on symphony musicians. They’re seeing a very human side. People in the audience get to see the players getting drawn in just as much as they are, and it creates a very special rapport. When you see somebody engaged and laughing, you see their spirit. One thing I often hear after a show from musicians and conductors is how much they enjoyed being part of this dynamic with the audience. It’s something they didn’t realize was possible.

BRAVO: What do you hope to accomplish with this show?

To singlehandedly take over the universe ... Really, I just want people to have an amazing time, to laugh and see their orchestra in a whole new way. For orchestras I want to be part of the solution. The revolution. I want to give them this compelling and engaging program that is inspiring and sparkling and alive and energizes the entire community. I want to help to create this very human and joyous event that keeps all of us doing the work we love and keeps all kinds of people coming to the concert halls and theaters.

Don't miss the mayhem! One of the most anticipated shows of the whole season, "Orchestral Lunacy: Tomáš Kubínek with the Lakewood Symphony" tickets are on sale now and going quickly. Call 303.987.7845 today!
