InstallationSpecialinstructionsforFireSafevalvesappearonpage 8.1. TheBray/McCannalokvalveisdesignedtobemounted
betweenANSIflanges.Whenthevalveisopen,thediscwillextendintothepipeonbothsidesofthevalve–furtheronthebodysidethantheseatretainersideofthevalve.Pipingmustbelargeenoughtoallowthedisctoclearthepipe.Thechartsonpage 2showtheminimumpipeIDallowable,andstandardpipeIDs.Ingeneral,Class150valveswillclearSchedule40pipe,andClass300valveswillclearSchedule80pipeadequately.Class600willingeneralclearSchedule80sizes3,4,and6;andSchedule100insizes8,10,12,14,and16.

Positiveshutoffwillbeobtainedwiththevalveineitherposition;however,installationwiththeseatretainerupstreamwillgivelongerservicelife,especiallyinerosiveservices.
4. Withthediscinclosedposition,carefullycentervalvebetweenflanges.Guideholes(waferpatternvalve)ortappedholes(luggedvalves)tomatchANSIPipeflangesandassistinpositivealignment.
5. Use standard torques when bolting valve into theline.Theseatissufficientlycompressedbytheseatretainer,andadditionalforcefromflangeboltingisnotrequired.

Maintenance1. Reasonableprecautionsshouldbetakenbeforebegin-
ningworkonthevalve.Protectiveclothing,asrequiredbythespecificlinefluid,shouldbeworn.
WARNING
2. Beforeremovinghandleortheactuatorfromthevalve,orbeforeremovingseatretainerfromavalveindeadendservice,closethevalveanddepressurizetheline.
Theeccentricdesignof theBray/McCannalokmayallow linepressure toopen thevalve if thehandle/actuatorisnotinplacewhilethevalveisunderpressure.
WARNING
Do not pressurize the line without a handle oractuatoronthevalve.
3. The Bray/McCannalok valvemust be in the closedpositiontoberemovedfromtheline.

3. Aminimumof1/16”thickgasketisusedbetweenthepipeflangeandvalvebodyface.
4. When using a pipe whose I.D. is smaller than therecommendedminimuminsidediameterofpipewithadequateclearance,achamferof45°shouldbepro-videdontheendofthepipesothatitclearsthedisc.

Discspacers(5)areusedattopandbottomofdisctoproperlypositiondiscinbody.Properspacerswereselectedatinitialassemblyandrarelyrequirereplace-ment.Thelocationofthesespacersshouldbenoted,andthespacersmarkedatdisassemblysothattheyarereinstalledinthesamepositions,topandbottom.
10. Separatebodyfromdisc,andremovethrustwasher(9)frompackingbore.
11. Examine stem bearings (6) for excessive wear. Ifremovedfrombody,

12.Clean body thoroughly to remove all dirt, foreignmatter,rust,etc.
13. Placethebody(1)flat,seatretainersideup,andsup-portitonwoodenblockssufficientlyabovetheworksurfaceastofacilitateinsertionofthedisc(2)inopenposition.Lowerthediscintoposition,aligningtheboresinbodyanddisc.
14. Insertnewstem(3)inbody(1)withlargeendofthetaperpinholestowardthetop.Assemblediscspacers(5)asstem(3)isinserted,makingsurethatspacersarereturnedtooriginallocationsasmarked.
15.Aligntaperpinholesindiscandstem,andinstalltaperpins(4).Drivepinsintightlywithrodorpunch,andtackweldeachpin(4)todisc(2)atlargeendofpin.
16. Install new gasket (18) on locating plug (19) andinstallpluginbody.
17. Installnewstemseals,followinginstructionsin“StemSealReplacement”section.(see pg. 4)
18. Installnewseat,followinginstructionsin“SeatRe-placement”section. (see pg. 4)
19.Remounthandleassemblyoractuator,andoperatevalveseveraltimestoverifyproperoperation.Exam-inediscandseatforanydamagebeforereinstallinginline.

4. Carefullyremovegraphitegasketsfrommetalseat.Donotbendorcrimpmetalseat.Alltracesoftheoldgasketsmustberemoved.
5. Cleanseatretainerandbodysurfacestoremoveanyadheringgasketmaterial,corrosion,orotherforeignmaterial.Examinediscseatingsurfacesfordamage,andexamineseatingsurfaceofmetalseatforwearordamage.Replaceifdamaged.
6. Placenewseatondisc,carefullycenteringinbodyrecess.7. Placenewgraphitegasketonthebody.Positionmetalseatoverthe
disc,lipfacingout,ontopofthepolymerseat.Placeanothergraphitegasketontopofthemetalseat.Graphitegasketscanbefirstattachedto themetal seat to simplify theassembly.Spraya suitableadhesive,like3MSuper77generalpurposeadhesiveorsimi-lar,in3or4spotsonbothsidesofthemetalseattoholdthegasketsinposition.
CAUTION
Handlethegasketscarefullyastheyareverythinandareeasilytornorscratched.
8. Alignholes in seat retainerwithholes inbodyandseat, andcarefullyplace seatretainerinposition,ontopofseat.
CAUTION
Becarefulthatseatdoesnotshiftwhenretainerisinstalled.
Lightlygreasecapscrewthreadsandtightendownevenlyinacriss-crosspatterntoassurepropercenteringanduniformcompression.TorquecapscrewstothevaluesgiveninTable 2 (pg. 5).
9. Lubricate the disc edge with molybdenum disulfide spray or similar lubricant, ifavailable.Asaminimum,lubricatethediscedgewithlightmachineoilorlightgrease.Operatevalveseveraltimesandexamineseatfordamagebeforereinstallinginline.
1. TheFireSafeBray/McCannalokvalvewillprovidefiresafe shutoffwith flow in either direction,meetingAPI607andBritishStandard6755part2criteria,aswellasbubble-tightshutoffineitherdirectioninnormalservice.However, installation with the seat retainer upstreamprovidesmaximumprotection to the soft seat, andwillincreaseseatlife,especiallyinerosiveservices.
2. Installationboltinginformationanddimensionaldatagiv-enforthestandardMcCannalokvalvesisalsoapplicabletotheFireSafeversions.
Stem Seal ReplacementTheprocedure for replacementonpage 4 alsoapplies toFireSafevalves,withthefollowingexceptions:
1. GraphitestemsealsareusedintheFireSafevalves.Thearrangementofthetwotypesofstemsealswheninstalledis:bottomseal–carbonfiberbraidedring;centerseals–graphiterings;topseal–carbonfiberbraidedring.
2. Table 4 showsstemsealquantitiesforclass150and300valves.

Bray/McCannalok Operations and Maintenance Instructions
Stem and Disc ReplacementThesameproceduresapplytoFireSafevalvesastothestandardvalves,withtheadditionofthespecialrequirementsforstemsealandseatreplacement.
Field Adjustments – All ValvesStemSeal Leakage – Should leakage occur at thestem seals, it may be stopped by retightening theglandretainernutstothevaluesspecifiedinTables 2 (pg. 5) or 4 (pg. 8).
NOTICE
Donotovertightenglandnuts,as thismaycauseincreased operating torque and improper valveoperationorclosure.
Iftheleakagecannotbestoppedbythisaction,thestemsealsrequirereplacement.AdjustingValveClosure–Valveswithgearactuatorsor electric/pneumatic actuatorsmay require adjust-mentof the travelstops in theactuator toproperlyclosevalvefortightshut-off.Thefollowingproce-dureshouldbefollowedtosettravelorlimitstops.(Itisrecommendedthatthevalvemustberemovedfromlineforthisprocedureandactuatormounting.)
1. Usingastraight-edgeandvernierordepthcali-per,measurethedistancesfromthefaceoftheseat retainer to the disc (valve closed) face atthe3o’clockand9o’clockpositions (stem isat12o’clockposition).Themeasurementsmustagreewithin1/16”(0.062”).
2. If they do not agree, disc must be rotated inthe direction of the larger dimension. If the 3o’clockdimensionislarger,thediscisnotfullyclosed,andmustberotatedinthe“close”direc-tionmore.If9o’clockdimensionislarger,discisover-closed,andmustbeopenedslightly.
3. Thevalvediscisatthefullopenpositionwhenthe disc is perpendicular to the body. Set the“open”actuatorstopforthisposition.
CAUTION
Do not allow the valve to over-open as thismaydamagethediscseatingsurfacesbyhit-tingbodyorattachedpiping.
4. Ongearoperators, loosenandadjust theclos-ing stop screw topermitproperdiscposition-ing.Adjustandlockdownwhendiscclosureiswithinmeasuredtoleranceinstep1.Openandclosevalve;recheckmeasurementsbeforerein-stallinginline.
NOTICE
The setting of the actuation device’s closetravelstopisimportant.The valve has an internal travel limiter toensurevalvedisccannotbeoverclosed.Toensure that thevalve travel limiter isnotdamaged, the actuator close travel stop boltmust be at a position just before valve disccontactsit’stravellimiter.
5. Forotherpoweractuators,consultthemanufac-turer’s instructions for setting travel stops, asthesevarywithactuatormodelandtype.
6. Ifremovingthevalvefromthelineisnotpracti-cal,asacruderemedythedisccanbeplacedintoapositionintheseatatwhichtheleakagestopsandtravelstopsareadjustedtothisposition.
