LATIN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES is a theoretical and scholarly journal for discussion and debate on the political economy of capitalism, imperialism, and socialism in the Americas. The authors, however-not Latin American Perspectives or Sage Publications-are responsible for their own views, sources of informa- tion, writing style, and so on. Our objective is to develop viable political strategies and transform the socioeconomic structure in Latin America through theoretical analysis that is well supported by facts, documentation, and other forms of descriptive data Strictly descriptive articles cannot be considered except where they contribute to the overall purpose of a specific issue. While we are a Marxist-oriented and anti-imperialist journal, we make a conscious effort to publish a diversity of political viewpoints. Top priority will be given to articles that strike directly at the most important theoretical issues, particularly subjects that have received inadequate discussion or are in sharp dispute. We also attempt to encourage the work of relatively "unknown" students and scholars, and to bring the work of Latin American scholars to the English-speaking world. LATIN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES welcomes strong views as long as they are backed by cogent arguments, are grounded in Latin American reality, and are written to be comprehensible to a wide audience. Readers' criticism, comments, and proposals are welcomed.

ALL MANUSCRIPTS will be submitted to the following review process. A Coordinating Editor will be named to serve as liaison between the author and the other editors and, for authors who so wish, to provide editorial assistance. Manuscripts will then be submitted to two Participating Editors, one Latin American and one non-Latin American, who along with the Coordinating Editor and Editorial Collective will decide if the manuscript is to be accepted in its present form, returned to the author for revision, or rejected. In the case of rejection or return for revision, the reviewers' signed comments will be sent to the author. The Coordinating Editor will settle any substantial disagreement among reviewers. An author who feels that important views have been rejected may appeal; this will be reviewed by all Coordinating Editors. Please submit five copies of the manuscript. Manuscripts should include a cover sheet so that author's name and affiliation can be deleted for review. Please conform to journal style, as dictated by style sheets that can be obtained from the Publisher or the Managing Editor on request. Manuscripts and questions about the editorial process should be sent to the Managing Editor, Latin American Perspectives, P.O. Box 5703, Riverside, California 92517-5703.
