HistoryofMyPathinJiu-Jitsu

IstartedJiu-Jitsupracticein1984whenIwas10yerasold.SergioLauroJardim,morecommonlyknownasMalibu,encouragedmetotakemyfirstlessonintheJacare shool where he taught some classes. Like any other teenager, I lovedactionmoviesandwantedtobeawarrior, sotheopportunitysoundedperfecttome, almost like a dream come true. I always admired the advanced students, wondering if one day Iwould knowwhat they know, and be able to performwhattheycan.Manythingshappenedinthosedays,thingswhichshapedmefortherestofmylife.

In the beginning I devoted myself to pratice. But later, I had to face mygreatestdecision:whetherIshouldfollowmydreamsanddowhatIreallyenjoyinmylife, orchoosesomethingthatwouldbuildmysocialposition—awayofsubmittingtotherulesofthemarketplace(whichwassomethingIwasexpectedtodo).

Myfather’sdeathwasashock,leavingmewithgreatgriefandabig,emptyholeinmyheart.Sincethen,Ihavehadtoberesponsibleformyfamilywithout

having thesupportofsomebodywhocouldguideme.Whiledeath isapartoflife, and does not have to set us back, this death was not expected. Manyresponsibilitiesanddutiesfellonmyshoulders.

Another important moment came with my decision to get married andbecomeafather.Itisnotaneasytasktobeahusband, afather, ateacher, andawarrior at the same time. Such a life instantly becomes busy with manyresponsibilities,andthereislittletimeforfun.IthinkIamtrulyblessedwithmyjob,whichbringsmejoyandsatisfaction.

WhenIinjuredmybackin1988,Iwasforcedtostoppracticingandwasn’tabletoseemyfriends.IwantedtobefarawayfromtheplacesandpeopleIlovesomuch.IthoughtIwouldnotbeabletoresumemypractice.

Aftersurgeryattheendof1989,Ibegantrainingagain.Igotmyblackbeltin1991.Then, in1998, Iwent to adoctor to confirmwhat sortof exercises Icouldbedoingtostayintopshapeforanupcomingcompetitionwithouthurtingmyself.Ihadbeengetingbackinjuriesoften.MydoctortoldmethatIshouldn’tpracticeatall,thatIshouldn’tinvolvemyselfinanyserioussportsordemandingactivities. And especially, I shouldn’t practice Jiu-Jitsu. I thoughtmy life hadended, thatmydreamswereover.

I went to another doctor, my friend, who had taken care of me sincemychildhood.Hedecidedthatmyconditionwasstableenoughtonotonlypractice,butalsotoparticipateinacompetition(indicatingthatIshouldalwaysbeawareofthelimitations,pain,andailmentsIcanexperienceatanytime).

I feltconfident. In1999Iwonall thecompetitions inwhichIparticipated,butaweekbeforetheworldchampionshipsIsustainedabadkneeinjury.Iwenttomydoctor,whoassuredmethathecouldperformsurgerythesameday.Ihadtwooptions:eitherarthroscopy,toremoveapieceofthemeniscus,whichwouldimmobilzemyknee;ornormalsurgery, inwhichablockwouldbeplacedintomyknee,thoughwithoutawarrantythatatanymomentitmightnotslipoutofplace.Ichosethesecondoption.Irestedtilltheendoftheweekonlytodiscovertwodaysbefore thecompetition that Ihadgained someweight andneeded tolose 8 kilograms in order to be able to compete in my weight category. Theenormousweightgainwascausedbyacombinationoftwofactors:medicationcontainingcorticosteroidsplacedinmyknee, thuscausingwaterretention, andthe fact thatmy bodywas being deprived of high-energy activities. I lost thesurplus weight, passed the weight test, and after surmounting uncountableobstacles and challenges, manged to reach my goal – I won the worldchampionship.

Page 16: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: The Ultimate Guide to Dominating Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts

All the obstacles I faced through the whole advanture, like the doctorsdiagnosing that Iwas almost handicapped, onlymademy sucess taste sweeterandmoresatisfying.

The Alliance Academy was created in 1994 from the joint forces of theMaster Academy (Jacare and Fabio Gurgel) and Strike (my school in thosedays). We didn’t want our teams competing with each other in prestigiousdomesticandinternationalcompetitions.

Our decision to join forces and establish one strong tournament teamwiththe potential to win was welcomed with interest — other schools joined theAllianceteamandbegancompetingunderthisname.

Currently the Alliance team is a four-time world championship winner(1999, 2000, 2008, 2009); thePanamerican championshipwinner in 2009; theBrazilian championshipwinner in2009; andwas choosen thebest tournamentteambymanysides.

Alliance gave an opportunity to many great athletes including LeonardoVieira, Leonardo Leite, Fernando Terere, Ricardo Vieira, Claudio Moreno,Marcos Meireles, Alexandre Street, Gabriel Leite, Marcelo Garcia, AlexMonsalve, Lucas Lepre, Michael Langhi, Cobrinha, Sergio Moraes, DamienMaia, andmanyothers.

Jiu-jitsu

Jiu-Jitsu techniques canbe characterizedby a reasoningprocess similar to theone found in the game of chess. In both activities, all actions are defined bylogic, tacticsandstrategy.

Yourpath in Jiu-Jitsucanbecompared toattempting to solveapuzzle.Atthebeginning,wearegivenafewelementsthatareeasyenoughtofigureout.Assoonaswesolvetheeasyones,however,wearefacingamorecomplicatedpuzzle,withmore elements to piece together. It is hard to imaginehowmanytechniques are possible, howmany techniques can be created. The variety oftechniques can encourage one to not only know possitions, but to also try tounderstandthemechanicsofmovement.

Thelogic, tactics, andstrategyintechniquesmustbebuiltontheknowledgeofanatomy.Onemustknowbodyparts, structure, mechanics, andallkindsoflimitations—the limitationsof the rangeofmotionneeded toexecutesprainsandneeded toperformchokes.Basedof this sortofknowledge, onecan learnhowtouselocksandpinstoforcetheopponentintosubmission.Thisisaclosecontact fight, body to body. Both fighters need to set their own strategy andtacticsofattack, buttheyalsohavetounderstandandanticipatetheopponent’smovesandpossibleactionsinordertocounteract.

PlayingchessandpracticingJiu-Jitsudemandexercisingtheanticipationoftheopponent’smoves.Thus,playingchessmightbringadvantagesfor theJiu-Jitsustudentandcanbeapartofthelearningprocess.

Besideitsphysicalside,Jiu-Jitsuhasalsoamoralandethicalcontext,whichalsogives students training inmoral aspects.Whenpracticingwith a senseofproportion and respect for the opponent, Jiu-Jitsu is very positive and moral.Practicingwithothersallowsonetodevelopfriendshipsandtobondwithotherpeople.Thesocialaspectkeepsthestudentcomingback,continuingtopracticeand—finally—achievingnewskills.Jiu-Jitsuisawonderfulwaytoeducateapersonandallowthemtodevelopsocialtools.

Withoutdoubt,Jiu-Jitsuisaneffectivemartialart.Ithasbeenprovedassuchin comparison with others martial techniques, and included in the trainingroutines of those who fight the most brutal combat: World Vale TudoChampionship (WVC), Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and Pride

FightingChampionships (PrideFC).BeingawareofJiu-Jitsu’sadvantagesandeffectivenesshelpsstudentstodevelopself-confidenceandself-esteem.

Technical development in Jiu-Jitsu depends on the way one maintainsdiscipline in many aspects of daily life, such as a healthy diet, a regularschedule,etc.Thisdisciplineisanotherwayofsayingself-control.

The practice of martial arts is also a great life lesson which will preparestudents to face their surrounding reality by teaching them about theirlimitations, increasing their self-esteem and confidence, and improving theirmotor skills. Practicing a martial art teaches one to respect one’s friend andopponents, tohandlebothvictoryandfailure.

If onlywe choose,we can live our dream life and achieve everythingwewant, instead of watching as time passes by. Jiu-Jitsu can be of great use increatingandpreparingforsuchalife.
