    CHAPTER ITHE HABIT FORMS

Up in the mountains of Arkansas, there were manywhiskey stills in the times of prohibition days. I wastold the revenue men were on their way to find one ofthose stills in the mountains. They stopped at a houseand asked a little boy where his dad and mother were."They are up yonder in the mountains making whis-key", he said."Will you show us the way up there?" the revenuemen asked."I will for IIquarter," answered the boy. They said, "Come on and show us, then we will payyou the quarter after we come back."Earnestly and sincerely the boy quickly replied, "Payme the quarter now, because you ain't coming back."Arkansas HillsI was raised in the foothills of the Ozarks in Arkan-sas, in a country about like that.My uncle made corn whiskey and rye whiskey. Itwas counted a crime in those days. Uncle X went tothe State Prison for a year and a day for manufactur-ing whiskey in those woods. My brothel' had many nar-row escapes because of drink. While he was drunk a

man hit him in the head with a pail' of knucks. Hecarried that scar to his grave. He died at the age of 4:';with a brain hemorrhage.Fred T. drank six gallons of home-made whiskey anddied when he was 24 years old.Uncle Y. argued that the home-made rye whiskeywas good for him. He gave it to his wife and childreneach morning. He died at middle age with heart trouble. His wife and son passed away about that time.Virgil H. was under the influence of alcohol looking

at the river after a big rain. His reasoning power wasdistorted. He bet some boys that he could swim theriver. He went down when he was half way across. Wefound him about two months later, twenty-five miles

state of mind. He dated a bad girl. He is still sufferingfrom venereal disease. His brother, in about the samecondition, has a deformed son born unto him.Near Our HomeThere were about 15 whiskey stills in sight of themountain where we lived. Itwas reported that our cowscame up drunk, staggering because they drank themash from those whiskey stills. While Uncle F. was at church, testifying, Isaw someboys take the top off his smokehouse and steal mashby the gallon. Those boys did many foolish things. Forthe lack of caution after they had been drinking, theyput .22 shells on a rock. They took another rock and hitthem. A bullet went into one of their bodies. My boy friends were drinking. They were involvedin a gang-fight. They fought with rails and rocks untilthey were crippled. At an early age, Iwould take mash from the whiskeystill out of the woods, which was a very dangerousthing to do. This carried me into very dangerous places,Ihave slept out in the woods alone all night.Mama told Papa she was going to leave him if he ever

got drunk again. One day he became drunk. He took hisknife and ran his brothers out of the corn patch. He became poisoned on wildcat whiskey. He lay sosick that he looked up and said, "Lizzie, please don'tleave me and me so sick." He promised her that hewouldn't drink again, and he kept his promise.Papa ReformedI was with Papa and Mama as they walked over our80 acre farm. He showed her where he had his whiskeyhid. They destroyed it. Then he stopped drinking andstopped saying those bad words before me.He became an officer of the law and destroyed manywhiskey stills. He arrested people and carried theroughnecks to jail, thirty-five miles away. For 18 years

he worked faithfully at that job. I saw many alcoholics;I saw many people who were made paupers by alcohol. One of my friends began to drink. He attacked Papawhile Papa was sheriff, so Papa had to knock him Tn

    the head with his gun.

down the river, in the woods. He was partly eaten bythe buzzards. While Uncle E. was drinking, his sense of judgmentwas perverted until he cut his friend's head and handsoff with his pocket knife. He buried him and almost gotby with it when he was caught and went to the peni-tentiary for life.Roy H. was drinking at the age of 21. He killedUncle T. with a tire tool and he was sent to the electric

chair.Ralph M. began to drink. My friend put some bulletsinto his stomach, seven at one time, and he has neverbeen healthy since. My school teacher drank until his senses were seared. He whipped me unmercifully. He shot my friendthrough the stomach and Iwas a witness on the scene.Mr. T. shot the store windows out with a shotgunwhile he was drunk. His son got his leg cut off near hiship. He is in the grave now.My school teacher friend, F., ruined his life withdrink. He left his wife and ten children, ran off with ateenager and married her.Miss N., a girl full of the Holy Ghost, and a real soul-winner, backslid. She began to drink and was killed ina speeding car while she was drunk.M. was cut all to pieces with a knife while he wasdrunk.Mr. M. influenced me very much. He was a wealthyman who drove fine cars. We thought that he was reallyliving. He lost his sense of caution while drinking. Hestarted to whip his wife, but his son took a shotgun andblew his brains out. Now that son goes around in a daze,in a deep study, forgetting what he started to do.Ernest C., a man who kept the mob of boys off me,got his head cut off with a pocket knife.Mr. T., a boy who worked for me, began to drinksocially, but just a little affected his power of reason-ing. He was riding on top of a train. The train went

under a tunnel and cut his head off. While Mr. R. was drinking, he came into a don't-care3

1 drank whiskey mixed with water and sugar when1 was about six years old. One day when 1 was aboutL2, Mr. D. carried me on a trip and purposely made medrunk to see how 1 would act. After then, 1 made, bought and sold strong drink. 1 have been in 20 feet ofan officer with a jar in each hand and 'made my get-away.1 made wine from blackberries and grapes. 1 madebeer from corn shorts or meals. 1made home-brew frommalt and yeast. 1made apple cider from apples out ofsomeone's orchard near by.Effects on MeThe first drink, 1 had to hold my nose. Itwas bitterand hot. Itdidn't have a good taste. Then after 1 drankfor a while, my mouth became seared. That hot liquorburned the roof of my mouth until 1 h ad to put pepper-sauce on my food to taste it.1 kept this up until 1 developed stomach trouble foryears. 1 weighed less when 1 was 19 years old, than Idid at 13. 1 ate raw eggs and sweetened milk, becausethe lining of my stomach seemed to be burned. For eight hours at a time 1 have been unconsciousbecause I drank so much. For years later 1 learnedthings I did while under the influence of that boot-legliquor. Sometimes 1 would fight for hours with rocks, sticks, and knucks. At one time I took my fist andknocked a thick, solid car windshield into many smallbits. 1 started to shoot, when my brother hit my hand, the bullets went over a boy's head. Two men chased mewith a knife while it was dark, because they weredrunk. I put one of them in the hospital. That habit was broken when I accepted Jesus as mySaviour and was filled with the Holy Ghost and fire. The pail that holds the milk today; I used to fill withbeer. I have not spent a cent for drink for about 30years. Now I walk with my head up high; my steps arebold and free. What our God has done for you; He hasalso done for me. Set in His Ways"Uncle Jim was a 60 year old pastor with a longmustache and a coarse voice. We were small children.

    4

We thought that he knew everything that there was toknow. But we soon learned that he didn't know it all.One day for the first time in our lives, we were intro-duced to some large, green, sweet-pepper. We couldhardly believe that there was some pepper that wasnot hot. After we were convinced we went across thecreek, through the woods, and told Uncle Jim about thissweet pepper. He had never heard of it and refused tobelieve it. We asked him to taste of it, but he thoughtwe were playing tricks on him. He stubbornly refused, saying "You can't fool me, all pepper is hot."Two Meanings1 have met with people who think they know it all. There are two kinds of giving mentioned in the Bible, public giving and private giving. So they say they doall their giving in secret. There are two kinds of prayer, public and secret. Yet some people say.they do all theirpraying in secret. There are two kinds of faith mentioned in the Bible-public and secret. Some people will not take part in thecalled fast, saying they do all their fasting in secret. There is more than one kind of love. God so loved theworld, (John 3:16) and then the Bible says love notthe world (I John 2 :15). There is more than one mean-ing to the word, "world".Anger is a fruit of the flesh; wrath is a fruit of theflesh; he that has wrath shall not enter the kingdomof heaven (Gal. 5 :21). Yet Jesus was angry. But Hisanger was a righteous indignation. He was angry at theevil powers instead of being angry at people. There are two kinds of kisses, one a lustful kiss andanother is a holy kiss. The whole duty of man is to fear God, yet perfectlove casts out fear. There is more than one kind of fear.We fight not against flesh and blood but againstpowers of darkness. The word, "Fight", has two mean-

ings. The Bible says "Thou shalt not covet"; it also saysto covet the best gift. There are two meanings to the words debate, hate, fool and many other words in the Bible. One kind of5

jealousy is of the devil; the other kind is of God. Godis jealous of us. We must acknowledge these truths, orsay the Bible contradicts itself. Two WinesThere are two kinds of wine spoken of in the Bible. For one not to acknowledge this, the burden of proofis on him to explain a great contradiction. For one tosay that all wine is fermented is for him to be like myuncle who said all pepper is hot. He is set in his waysand closes his eyes to plain facts. There are two kinds of cider. In California we boughtfour gallons of sweet cider, which was not fermented. In Arkansas you can buy unfermented cider. In SouthAfri_ca we bought sweet cider, also, in Nigeria and inWest Africa. In Switzerland they call it apple wine, butit isn't fermented. There is also a hard cider all over the world, that isfermented. There are two kinds of wine. In South Africa wedrank sweet wine. In Nigeria they have palm wine, which they get out of palm trees. It is unfermented. Most of the time they let it ferment. Here in Germany, I talked to a man about this. Hesaid the people here always called it wine whether, itis fermented or not. Since the war, the Americansclassify it grape juice and wine. The Bible does not speak of grape juice except insome translations. It is called old wine and new wine. Some call it sweet wine and fermented wine.At the time of this writing, I am in East Germanyand have just been to a German grocery store. Theyhave cider, wine and beer. You can get them all fer-mented or unfermented. In the United States manytimes we have made the California seed beer which isunfermented.

The Dictionaries TestifyThe Smith dictionary says that the weight of the

grapes pressed out juice before the juice was put intothe wine presses. This was new wine, or fresh wine. The wine was "pressed into its unfermented statesometimes and drank as must".

"It is possible that new wine was preserved in thestate of must by placing it in jars or bottles, and bury-ing it in the earth." A dog has proved that meat may bepreserved by putting it into the ground.Smith dictionary explains that the new wine at Pente-cost could have been eight months from the time ofvintage. He says that new wine was used for entertainingguests (Gen. 14:18). Itwas called the first fruits. (Lev.23 :13). The tithes were paid on"new wine as first fruits(Exo. 22:29; Deut. 18:4).He says, "The wines of antiquity were more likesyrups. Many of them were not intoxicants, even in a

small degree."Funk and Wag n aIl say, "Wine is the fresh juice ofgrapes fermented or unfermented." Webster's New Col-legiate Dictionary says, "The fermented, or loosely theunfermented, juice of any fruit, used as a beverage."Abbot's Dictionary of Religious Knowledge says,"Fermented wine was not the least common, and thepercentage of alcohol was small. New wines were whollywithout alcohol and were easily preserved in this con-dition for several months. There were also wines, whichby boiling or by drugs, the process of fermentation wasomitted and alcohol excluded. These were mixed withwater and constituted the most common drink of theland."

    6

Hebrew WordsSmith's Dictionary of the Bible says, "The Hebrewword translated wine, refers occasionally to unferment-ed liquor."The Hebrew word, chemer, may be fermented or maybe unfermented wine (Ezra 6:9). The scriptures caliunfermented wine, "The pure blood of the grapes"(Deut. 32 :14).No conclusion may be drawn if the Hebrew word, yayin, is fermented or unfermented. The Hebrew word, tirash, can mean fermented orunfermented. The word, Asis, is new wine, just trodden out (Isa.49 :26; Joel 1 :5). It is called wine sometimes before the

grapes are matured on the vine (Amos 9: 13), Or assoon as it is harvested. The word, Mesec, may mean fermented or not fer-mented.The word, axas, means vinegar from grapes. The word, gleukos, always means sweet, unfermentedwine (Acts 2:13).The word, yay in, sometimes meant fruit as soon asit was gathered out of the field (Jer. 40:10; Isa. 62:9).When the drought destroys the fruit before it is gath-ered, it is called wine (Isa. 24:7; Joel 1:10).The terms, wine and vine, mean the same in someplaces. The word, tirosh, was to be eaten rather than drunk. The word, debash, means food (Gen. 40 :3-11).It is pressed directly into the cup. The Latin word, sapa, means grape juice, boiled down to 1/3 its sub-stance, as it is in Syria today. It is must, unfermented

(Isa, 1:22; Hosea 4 :18).Another Latin word, vinum, refers to the grapesometimes, ordinarily meaning a solid substance.

The Scriptures TestifyWhile I was in Palestine, I saw a man walking witha hog on his shoulder. I watched him as he went to afountain, where he filled the hog with water. It wasonly a skin, not the hog, which he used to carry waterin, but it looked like a real hog.I.Then I understood more fully the terms Jesus usedas He said that they put new wine into new bottles.New wine is unfermented. It could be put into newpigskins. As it fermented it expanded which made thepigskin stretch. After then the pigskin must be usedfor old wine, which is already fermented, for it would

break if it stretched anymore (Luke 5 : 37-39).To me this was plain proof that there was a differencein old wine and new wine. God's Word says for us notto look upon the wine when it moves itself aright in thecup. Pour new wine out and it does not move of itselfaright; it does not form beads. Fermented wine does. This is one of God's commandments, for us not to look

upon the wine when it is fermented. This plainly showsthere are two kinds of wine.II.The disciples were known, according to Church Ilis-tory, we have already mentioned, to drink only newwine. They refused to break God's commandmentswhich said, "Look not upon fermented wine."

The mockers knew this. When they saw these peoplereeling and rocking under the power of God. theymocked them and said they must be drunk on newwine. One translation says sweet wine. They were mocking and kidding, just as we used todo when someone acted foolish. We would say, "Youare drunk on ignorance and staggering on starvation."And we would say, "You are crazy." Fighters used tosee us reel under God's power and say, "You are hyno-tized." They said that Jesus was under the influenceof the devil. On the day of Pentecost, Peter explained to thesemockers that the saloons were not open yet, as it wasonly 9 o'clock in the morning. They had no chance tobuy strong drink at that time of day. Wine in this placeis "c1eok us" , which was always unfermented. Thirscripture shows there were two kinds of wine.

III.It takes new wine about nine days to ferment, beforeit can be old wine. As soon as Jesus created fresh wine,it was called wine. His wine tasted good. Fermentedw.ine is not used for taste, as it is hot and bitter. ittastes unpleasant and is used for effects. Old wine hasno food value. Jesus made good wine. It was bette"than the old wine. When Jesus made bread, He did not make old, stalebread. You can't prove that His bread was leavenedbread. When He created fish, He did not create rottenfish. IV.Do you accuse Jesus of breaking His own command-ment, which says, "Look not upon fermented wine"?When Jesus put His approval upon marriage, He didnot create something that is a known home-breaker, or

    8 9

    7/18

alcohol, which is responsible for millions of divorceseach year. You wouldn't dare accuse the one who de-livers a man from alcohol of' being in the business ofmanufacturing the stuff. When He put His approval on sex in the home at thatmarriage, He did .not approve of the very thing thatmakes "wineos" and sex-perverts out of men. When He created fresh, sweet and good wine, it wasa rebuke and a disapproval of the old wine. He replacedthe old with the new.At the beginning of the creation, everything Hecreated was good for food (Gen.). Alcohol has nofood value. It is made by men. We clearly see here twokinds of wine in the scriptures.V.Paul told Timothy to "keep thyself pure." He knewthose who drink alcohol don't stay pure, because alcoholdefiles. Paul said, "If we defile this temple, God willdestroy us."Paul used Timothy to be an example to the believer. To the leader of the flock he said, "Ye must not be givento fermented wine" (I Tim. 3 :3). He gave these in-structions to Timothy. The fact that he told Timothy to use a little wine forthe stomach's sake proves to us that they also had bothsweet wine and old wine, or Paul would not have con-tradicted himself. No one uses fermented wine for his stomach. Itcauses stomach trouble. It affects your whole nervoussystem according to physicians. The main nerve goesthrough your stomach. If it is upset, it causes indiges-tion. Alcohol cooks a man's mouth, destroys his taste, causing him to put pepper on his food so he can tasteit. It also sears the stomach lining which causes stom-ach trouble.Since your stomach can digest raw meat, it woulddigest itself if it were not for an inner lining that pre-vents it from doing so. When alcohol or tobacco smokeburns that thin lining, there is your ulcer.Physicians say there is no food value in alcohol. Itcontains only empty calories. Alcohol is much against

    "

your heart, liver, circulation, brain, nerves. Alcoholcauses stomach disorders, polyneuritis, heart and kid-ney disorders. Because it dialates your skin, it over-works the liver, causing complications. It degeneratesthe organs of your body. (You can get a hundred pagebook for $1.00, which tells what physicians say thatalcohol does to the human body.)Paul did not violate Proverbs 23 :31, and his own com-mandment in ITimothy 3 : 3. Timothy evidently set theright example and drank must, a preserved sweet winewhich was good for his stomach. This proves to me thatthere are two kinds of wine, or Timothy would havebeen confused by a double standard given him bySt. Paul. VI.Another scripture that clearly shows to me there aretwo kinds of wine is Heb. 7 :1-7. Melchisedec is thehighest priest. He blessed Abraham and brought wineto him (Gen. 14:18).A priest was not permitted to drink fermented wine,or he would die (Lev. 10:9). Fermented wine was to bepoured out and never to be drank by God's people(Num.28:7). VII.The scriptures clearly condemn fermented wine andendorses new wine. Death and destruction followedwhen Nabel drank wine. Amnon drank wine and rapedhis own sister. Then he committed suicide (IT Sam.l~:10-17; 27).Job's children died while drinking fermented wine(Job 1:18-19).Belshazzar was destroyed while he was drunk. Hedefiled God's vessels with wine. If you defile Goa'stemple with alcohol, you will be weighed in the bal-ances. If you defile your body, you will be destroyed(ICor. 6 :19; Dan. 5 :18-20).A curse fell upon Noah's family after he drank fer-mented wine. Shame and judgment followed for cen-turies because Lot drank fermented wine.VIII.A drunkard shall not enter the kingdom of heaven

XII.Fermented wine causes sickness (Hosea 7 :5). Jesuswould not create a wine to make man sick. The devilcomes to kill and destroy. Jesus comes to save men'slives. Fermented wine kills and destroys. Fresh winehelps life. Jesus comes to destroy the works of thedevil.

(ICor. 6:10). If you steal, you are a thief; and if youlie .you are a liar; if you kill, you are a murderer;if you sin, you are a sinner; if you drink, you are adrunkard. If it takes four drinks to make a man drunk, then one drink makes him one-fourth drunk. One drinkaffects your reflexes, so you can't make a decision asQuickly.IX.The fact that wine is a type of judgment or thewrath of God, shows there are two kinds of wine. God

would never tell you to drink alcohol which is a typeof His wrath (Ps. 75 :8). Fermented wine mocks pee-ple and destroys homes (Pro. 20 :1). God says leaveit alone (Prov. 23:29-32).Judgment is pronounced on those people who drinkfermented wine (lsa. 5: 11). Itwill overcome you (Isa.28 :1).False prophets erred through wine as some preachersand priests do who drink it in our day (Hab. 2:5; Micah2: 11). God says some would eat, drink and would bedrunken in our day. These false prophets want us toprophesy smooth things and say that it is all right todrink wine.Daniel refused to defile himself with fermented wine.He knew it was unclean and unholy (Lev. 10:9-10; Dan.1 :8).But Daniel drank fresh wine (Dan. 10 :2-3). It isplain that there is a difference.

X.God said when His people backslid, they would begindrinking poisonous, fermented wine (Deut. 32 :31-33).He condemned them for doing it. They drank a differ-ent kind until they do this. The word, bread, does not always mean bread thatis fermented or leavened. Then why would you say thatthe word, wine always means fermented wine?XI.A drought does not affect fermented wine. Yet Godcalled for a drought on the new wine, and the corn(Hag. 1 :11). This means grow in grace, showing thereare two kinds of wine.

XIII.Jesus made and drank fresh wine, but He will cutthose people in pieces who eat and drink with thedrunken (Luke 12:45). He knew that there would beopen saloons in the last clays. He said for us to shunthe appearance of evil. He that knows to do good anddoes it not, to him it is sin.XIV.The new wine of the fruit of the vine is a symbolof the blood of Jesus (Matt. 26 :27-28). Fermented wineis the symbol of judgment. If unleavened (or unfer-mented) bread is the type of Jesus' body, then unfer-mented wine must be the type of His blood. The Jewswere not permitted to eat leavened bread at the pass-over (Lev. 23 :5-6). The yeast releases alcohol.

XV.Jesus drank new wine, but He refused fermentedwine (Mark 15 :23). He knew it would wreck Hissenses. He tells us to follow His example and presentour bodies as a living sacrifice, wholly and acceptableto the Lord (Romans 12:1; I Cor. 6:1.9).

XVI.Jesus and the disciples drank new wine, but theywould have never drunk anything to cause people tostumble (Rom. 14:29). We must do all things for theglory of God, and glorify God with our body. Usingsomething that breaks homes and hearts, does notglorify God (I Cor. 10:31; 6:20).God's Word used fermented wine as the opposite ofHis Holy Spirit (Eph, 5:18). But new wine is a typeof the Spirit. You must either have the f)Juit of thespirit or the spirits of the fruit. You can't serve twomasters. A house divided against itself cannot stand.A fountain can't send forth both sweet water and bitter.

XVII.It takes wine nine days to ferment. The new wine

was offered as first fruits or tithes (Nurn. 15:5; 18:12;Provo 3 :9). Fermented wine causes nothing but con-fusion.So we can clearly see that these foregoing scripturesshow there are two kinds of wine mentioned in theBible - new and old, or unfermented and fermented.Of course, some people who want to drink won't ac-knowledge this.

    CHAPTER IITHE FIRST STEP

Mr. C. sat in a chair for me to pray for him to bedelivered from cigarettes. I asked him if he believed itwas a sin to smoke. He said, "No, I don't." So I wouldnot pray for him. God has not promised to forgive oursins unless we confess them (lJohn 1 :9). That is whymillions of people are not deliverer! from sin. They.i ustify themselves.

I.Some say it is all right to drink fermented winebecause Christians overseas drink it. I have just comefrom Africa, where confessing Christians practicepolygamy. Is it all right for you to have several wivesbecause those people do?Some of them may come to America and take upsmoking cigarettes, saying it is right because theChristians in America smoke. Many of the Christians in Europe do drink and manyof the Christians in America smoke. Neither groupshould do these things. When you go across the wateryou should be a missionary and teach the people to liveholy. Some say that they drink fermented wine while they

are overseas, so they will not offend some of the Chris-tians who drink. When Paul was in Rome he did as the Romans. Thatwas in customs only. This did not mean hat he tookpart in their sins. When he was in Rome he did as heought to do.If you drink to keep from offending certain peoplein one country, why not chew tobacco to keep fromoffending people in another? Why not have five wives

in Nigeria because some professing Pentecostals prac-tice polygamy? Many people were offended at Jesus, because He toldthem how they should live. They would not walk anymore with Him (John 6 :61,66). Are you better thanJesus? Can you improve on His doctrine? Because ofVi

the Word a certain group are offended (Matt. 13 :20-21).They are the seed that fell on stony ground. I hope thatyou fell on good ground.

II.Some say drinking is right because Jesus was awine bibber.Itwas the critics that called Him a wine bibber. Theyalso called Him a glutton. But He wasn't. He didn'tbreak His own commandment (Proverbs 23 :20).The people also called Him a devil, a bastard and a

faker. But they were wrong. He drank the same kind of wine that He created, before the devil's children defiled it and made alcoholwith it.

the bottle to his neighbor's lips.V.Some say that it is all right to drink wine becauseNoah did.Why don't you commit adultery because David did?Noah drank wine after he came out of the Ark. TheChildren of Israel murmured three days after theycrossed the Red Sea.There was a fornicator in the Early Church. Bu4; thatdid not prove fornication to be right.Noah indecently exposed himself and a curse wasbrought upon his family. The effects were felt for gen-erations. Fermented wine will do the game today as itdid then.III.Some say it is all right to drink if you are moderate.

Would it be all right to be moderate with murder, lying, stealing, tobacco or adultery? To be temperate is to refrain from sin completely, and not to go to the extreme with legitimate things, such as eating, sleeping and talking.Moderate drinkers influence our youth to drink morethan drunkards do. It is the wrong example. If we causeour weak brother to stumble, we commit sin (Rom.14:2).

IV.A certain amount of the young people that you influ-ence to drink wine, become alcoholics and divorcees. Some say drinking is all right because it is legal.A t the timet>f this writing I am in Berlin where theylicense prostitutes. You would also think that prostitu-

tion is all right because it is legal. Suppose they legal-ize gambling or murder. A rattlesnake, that is legalizedand brought down the main street, is just as poisonous, and lots more dangerous, than it was before it waslegalized. In the judge's book, a drunk man who kills your wife,or rapes your girl, is guilty of a crime. In God's bookthe man who sold the drink, or the one who helped makeit legal, is guilty. They are guilty of souls. Woe to the one who puts

    1 -. 1

VI.Some day God puts His approval on the membersdrinking fermented wine when He saiel that the bishopmust not be given to wine.If He told a deacon not to commit adultery, did thatmean that it was all right for the members to do w?He wanted the bishop to be an example for all the chil-dren of God to follow.God does not have two classes of people, one holyand the other unholy. He is no respecter of persons. Some professors in the early church committedadultery. Others drank strong drinks. Some professingChristians today use tobacco. The chu rches have a rulefor the deacons not to use tobacco. That does not mean

it is all right for the members to do so.lf I should say a deacon should not go around smok-ing a long cigar, that would not mean it was all rightfor him to smoke a short one. If 1 would say a deaconmust not be given to a lot of wine, that does not meanit is all right for him to drink a little. All Christians are in the royal priesthood. They area holy nation. If a pan is clean, it cannot be any cleaner. If a lineis straight, it cannot be any straighter. Jesus said, "Goand sin no more."Those who are separated unto Him must not drinkfermented wine (Numbers 6:3). We must be separated

from all these things (II Cor. 6:14). Samson had powerwith God. He was not allowed to drink wine (Judges13:4-14).God especially blessed the Rechabites for not drink-

ing strong drinks, making them an example to us (Jer.35:6).John the Baptist came preaching holiness and a clean

life. He drank no wine. God's holy people do not drinkstrong drink (Lev. 10:9-10)."Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy

sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of thecongregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for everthroughout your generations: And that ye may put dif-ference between holy and unholy, and between uncleanand clean."Ministers who touch unfermented wine break God's

    commandment (Lev. 10:9).VII.

Some say it is all right to drink fermented winebecause Lot did.Lot also slept with his daughters and let them bear

children by him. Would you say that is all right becauseLot did it? Adultery and wine go hand in hand.A curse fell on the generations that sprung from

those children. They gave themselves to idolatry.A drunkard shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

VIII.Some say that wine is all right because it is used at

the Lord's supper. You cannot find that fermented wine was ever used

in the Holy Communion by Jesus or His disciples. Thefruit of the vine was a type of His blood. Alcohol is thetype of destruction.

Medical dictionaries do not classify alcohol as food.It has empty calories and overworks the liver. The bodycan't contain or. assimilate it. It can't repair or: assistthe development of the body. It can't be incorporatedinto any tissue or organism.

X.Sorce say wine is all right because David gave the

hi_5hpriest wine (I Chron. 16:3).The scriptures prove it was new wine he gave to the

priests. If the priests drank fermented wine they woulddie (Lev. 10:9). XI.Some say they don't take enough wine to hurt. The least amount of alcohol affects the brain and

slows down judgment. The brain is the center of yourwhole nervous system. It prevents self-criticism andself-control, especially when driving.XII.Some say that alcohol makes their body warmer. It actually flushes your face and makes you feef

warmer but it is a sensation only. The blood rulles toyour skin and loses heat so you may freeze quicker.Alcohol is not a stimulant.XIII.Some say it improves their eyesight. It only interferes with the interpretation of the

image, as it reaches the brain. Then it disturbs themuscles and the adjustment of your eye, sometimesmaking you see double.

    IX.

XIV.Some say a little alcohol makes them a better driver. It actually dulls the brain and helps you take a

chance. It affects your decision and slows down reactiontime. Would you want your employee to drink, or yourpilot, or an engineer on a train, your doctor, or yourminister? It lowers you!" alertness and your sense ofcaution.

Some say wine is all right because Paul told Timothyto use wine.Timothy was to use it for his stomach's sake. Fer-

mented wine causes stomach trouble. Itmakes mensick (Hosea 7:5). New wine is good for your health.Alcohol causes delirium tremens. Itcauses an earlydeath. Itmakes a man see snakes and demons.

XV.Some say it helps them to be more skillful. You can't make a decision quickly if you have the

least amount of alcohol. The hangover affects you for18 19

    24 hours. Ball coaches have a rule against drinking. Ithinders your appetite and digestion. It cooks yourmo. . upsets stomach acid and irritates the stomach'in;

grass, it will choose grass. We must be teachers. If weknow a bridge is out and fail to warn a man, we areguilty of his death when he plunges into the river.Multiplied millions of televisions, road signs andmagazines are teaching people that they should drink. We need a program just after theirs, telling people thatalcohol kills. A sign should be put beside each roadsign, telling the youth that alcohol is poison. Besideeach magazine advertisement, we need the warning, telling people that it breaks homes and causes divorces. Some argue that they will never be an alcoholic. An alcoholic is one who's drinking causes difficultiesand yet he continues to drink. All of our doctors couldnot treat the 881/2 million who demand treatment now.None of these alcoholics intended to get beyond help.XXI.Some argue that prohibition cannot be enforced.You. could argue the same thing about prostitution. So you believe in making it legal"? Our governmentdoes not catch all the murderers. Why not legalizemurder"? They don't enforce the income tax in everycase, but they do a very good job of it. If they coulddo that, they could enforce prohibition if they were notgin-heads themselves. They are selling souls for tax

    money.

XVI.':'vme argue that alcohol makes them think clear. It makes you more talkative but reduces the qualityof your speech. Itmakes you a second rate guest. In-stead of making you braver, it perverts your judgment

as to what risk to run. XVII.Some believe it helps their health. Both the League of Nations and the United Nationshave sought ways to change people to wholesome juice. It makes one stronger in sensation only, but actuallyweakens the body. Instead of helping your bad cold,it only raises the temperature of your skin and makesyou have a warmer sensation. But it actually opens thepores so you will freeze quicker. It destroys caution.XVIII.OtlWrs argue alcohol is not dangerous. It gives you a false sense of security and distortsperspective. It gives an illusion of superiority and af-fects speed reaction or muscular control. Because it en-courages extreme behavior, it lessens caution andcauses murder and rape. Alcohol directly causes 200,-

000 divorces in the United States in one year. It is aself inflicted disease.

XX.Others argue that you should let people choose forthemselves and not try to influence them.If you let a garden choose between tomatoes and

XXII.Some argue that it is not immoral to drink alcohol. The Baptist churches have a rule against their peopledrinking. So does the Methodist church, Latter DaySaints, Seventh Day Adventists, and most all denomi-nations. Martin Luther condemned it. So did the EarlyChurch fathers. Mohammed prohibited it. He now has400 million followers. The Hindus teach that it is wrong. There are 500 million of them. Pope Pius XII advisedtotal abstinence. Russia won't let her women go to thebars as our women do. Why would the professing Chris-tians of America weaken their nation by selling alcoholto 100 million people"? They know very well that itcosts them in crime nearly 18 billion dollars in one year.XXIII.Some say they are just a social drinker.

XIX.Some argue that you need to sow wild oats whileyoung and learn how much alcohol that you can stand.Seventy per cent of the alcoholics began drinking intheir teens. Over half of them die under 50. If you getin society where someone's capacity is greater thanyours, you may be very uncomfortable; they will callyou chicken. The Lord says whatsoever ye sow thatshall ye reap.

Being a social drinker influences people more thana downright drunkard would. Your liberty causes othersto suffer.Ifyou run with that kind of society, you will feel outof place unless you drink. Itmakes you a second classguest. Itaffects your sense of humor. You say you have a right to do your own choosing. You may have the privilege, but not a right. You maybe free to shoot a gun, but when it endangers the livesof my family, that makes it my business.XXIV.You say people have used alcohol for centuries.Well, it is more dangerous than ever in our day, when we have high-speed cars, planes, trains, bombsand missiles. The highway accidents cost Texas in oneyear over 347 billion dollars. 40,000 people die annual-lyon our highways. That is more than were killed dur-ing the war. Many more are crippled for life. Wreckscost individuals one and one-half billion dollars eachyear. We pay 11 billion dollars each year for alcoholicdrinks; much more than we pay for milk, or for mis-sionary work.

    CHAPTER IIIBREAK THAT HABIT

Now that you have made the one big step; you havegone nine-tenths of the way. That step is to confessthat the habit is a sin. God said that He would forgiveyour sins if you would confess them.Forgiveness is an important step. Some people try toreform in their own power. That is like a man comingto his grocerman and saying, "I believe I will pay cashfrom now on". The grocerrnan says, "That is wonderful, hut what about the old account?"The old account must be settled. God will not onlyforgive your sins, but He will cleanse you from all un-righteousness (I John 1 :9). Y')U will become a newcreature in Christ Jesus and all things will become new(11 Cor. 5:17).After you have made this step you are dean, sweptand garnished. You are empty OVIatt. 12 : .14). Thereare a few more steps which will help you to stay de-livered.

XXV. I.You must cooperate with the Lord. Don't expect Godto do everything and you do nothing. Don't be like thelittle boy that got up, stretched himself, and said."Lord, bring me my shoes".When God sees that you are doing your best He willhelp you. When you do your best He will do the rest. When you reach the end of your own strength, thenyou walk out into God's strength. When you go as faras you can go, the Lord will be there to carry you on.You will seek for Him and find Him when you shallseek for Him with all your heart (Jer. 29:13).

II.I lave a purpose in quiting. Why do you want to quit, just because it weakens your body and let you catchdiseases, or do you want to use your health andstrength for the glory of God and in His service? Hedoes not want you to just use that divine strength foryourself or in the service of the devil. His glory He willnot give to another.

Some say they like it because they forget theirtroubles.Well, you can give strong drink to those people whoare going to perish and they will perish quicker; thenthey will forget their troubles as far as this life is con-cerned.Alcohol burns the mouth, so you have to take morenext time to even taste it, or to feel the effects. It is dangerous to try to escape reality. It affectsyour higher faculties, that distinguish you from a brute. The least bit affects you.By using it, you influence the weaker brother. Itcauses the life saving reflexes of your body to be re-tarded. You are actually doing as Cain, you are asking,"Am I my brother's keeper?"The Americana Encyclopedia gives a long list of dis-eases that are caused by alcohol. When your toes arestuck up, your troubles are not forgotten. You will re-member them in eternity.

    22 23

    14/18

Your body is the temple of God (I Cor. 6 :19). Yourbody is holy (I Cor. 3:17). God does not want you todefile it. He wants you to present your body as a livingsacrifice, holy, and acceptable unto Him (Rom. 12:1).He wants to dwell in your body. Some folk have been taught that what goes into thebody does not defile it. Daniel refused to defile himselfwith the king's meat or his wine (Dan. 1:8). That goesinto the body. According to some people's teaching youcan take all the dope you want to and become an addict.Jesus taught it is what creates at the heart that de-files a man. It is when you become willing in your heartto take tobacco, alcohol, dope, or anything that is notgood for your body, that you become defiled. If youaccidentally kill a man it is not sin. If you accidentallydrink deadly poison it is no sin. If you accidentallydrink alcohol it would not be held against you as a sin.

It is a sin as soon as you become willing in your heartto drink, before it enters into your mouth.God commands you to cleanse yourself from all filthi-ness of the flesh (II Cor. 7 :1). You do it and He willfurnish you grace. His grace is sufficient. His commandment to you is to do all that you do, tothe glory of God (I Cor. 10 :31). Can you drink strongdrink to His glory? The devil gets glory out of it untilyou quit. Can you win more souls by using it? One soulis worth more than anything in the world. Jesus gaveHis life for souls.Jesus is our example (I Peter 2 :21). We should fol-low His steps. Would Jesus drink, smoke, or chew?

III.Be sure that you want to quit. The reason some folkdo not want to quit a habit is because they like it. Theylove it more than they do Jesus, or they would quit. They want to serve the Lord and hold on to that habit. They are double minded. They are unstable in all theirways (James 1:8). They see double. If their eye issingle their whole body shall be full of light (Luke11:34).God is Light (I John 1:5). If your body is full ofGod there is no room for the ungodly habits to stay inyour body.

    24

If a man's blood is full of alcohol or tobacco hiswounds will not heal nearly as fast as the man who haspure blood.God responds to faith. If our heart does not condemnus we have faith (I John 3:21). So you put your faithinto action. If you are in Christ you are not under con-demnation. The very fact that you spend, your moneyfor drink, when your children need things, if; e nough tocondemn you.

IV.Make a decision. When you make a decision you havethat thing whipped. You may suffer for years becauseyou have not made a clear-cut decision. A man that isfull of indecisions is a miserable man.Iam in Berlin Germany at the time of this writing. One thousand teenage boys are buried in one grave, because they made a decision to fight for Hitler to thelast ditch. If one thousand boys could decide to give their livesfor Hitler, can't you decide to do something for God?My uncle was never saved. He killed a man and didnot claim to be religious. After using tobacco thirtyyears he made a decision to quit it. He never used itagain. If he could do that for himself, Iknow you cando it for God, if you will only decide that you will do it.You need a backbone, old fashioned gumption, and awill power. My wife's brother went to an institution because he

refused to give up smoking when he was saved. He saidit was impossible for him to quit. But when the doctortold him it was either quit it or die, he quit. If he coulddo that, as he was in a backslidden state, you can do itfor Jesus. My dad used tobacco about thirty years. Ithought itwas impossible for him to quit it. One day he made a

decision that he would quit. He carried a twist of tobac-co in his pocket for a month, just to show himself thathe had a will power. He decided that he would quit, andhe did. He did not ask God to help him. If he could dothat in his own power you can do it in the power of God.In Tokyo we observed how millions of people were

    25

  • 8/2/2019 Break That Habit by W. v. Grant, Sr

    15/18

willing to give their life for the Emperor. They joinedthe suicide squad and many gave their lives in train-ing.If they could do that for a man, you can do some-thing for the Lord. Could it be that you want to satisfyyourself, and just hang on to that cigarette? The com-pany is wrong. They say that it satisfies. The very factthat you are always reaching for another one, provesthat they do not satisfy. That is true with any habit. You should remember how Jesus suffered for you.If you do, I don't see how you can refuse to sacrificesomething for Him.George Baker is a colored man who calls himselfFather Divine. He claims to have twenty million loyalfollowers. He demands that they dissolved relationshipas husband and wife, and live together as brothers andsisters. If they do that for a false god, then you shouldsurely be able to sacrifice a little alcohol. You havedivine help, but those deluded people do not.You say you can't give up alcohol. Suppose a mangets saved and says he can't give up adultery. Wouldthat excuse him at the day of judgment?

V.Learn to say "No". That is the reason that ninetyper cent of the people hold on to a habit. They can'tresist anything. They have never learned to say "No".A man will never make a success in business if he can'tsay "No". He will always be in debt. He will buy every-thing that is offered to him.The wisest man that lived said, "If sinners entice theeconsent thou not" . You are to blame for most of yourtemptations because you are too easy to say "No".A lady was having trouble with many men. Thetemptations grew stronger until she was tempted all thetime. Men would phone her often, trying to get her tobe untrue to her husband. We advised her to simplysay, "No, I will not". She tried it, and that was the lasttime they would phone her. She really had not made adecision. She only thought she had. She made it tentimes harder on herself by gradually torturing herself. Finally she looked in the mirror, called herself by

name, and said to herself, "You will never do this aslong as you live". The battIe was over. She had told her-self, the man, the. devil, and the Lord that she wasthrough, and she was.

VI.Don't try to taper off. Many people are like a manclimbing out a well. When he gets nearly to the top hefalls back to bottom. He has all that climbing to do overagain.I was in the car business. Some people paid on a carfor twenty years. About the time they almost had onepaid for, they would let it go back and buy another one. That is no way to quit a habit. If you do that you will

never quit .Put every hour you can between the time you tookyour last drink and the present moment. You would nottry to taper off on murder, lying, stealing, adultery,or any other sin.If you cut a dog's tail off one inch each month for ayear it would hurt just as badly each time. It wouldhave to heal up twelve times. It would stay store allthe time. Cut it all off at once and have it over with.Write down the word HABIT. Cut the H off. You

have abit left. Cut off both the H and the A. You havea bit left. Cut off the three first letters, H, A, and B.You have it left. That is the way some people taper offa habit. When they have gone for days they have it left.Soon it tapers the wrong way. Itgrows larger.VII.Try fasting with your praying. That kills out the lustof the flesh. When the natural strength weakens in yourbody the power of God is stronger. When you are weakthen you are strong. The Holy Spirit dwells in yourbody. That will leave room for Him to take dominion.

Let not sin reign in your mortal body. If you live afterthe flesh you shall die. Glorify God with your body.VIII.Build your faith in God. Faith comes by hearing' the

Word of God. A man in Baltimore was reading one ofmy books, when suddenly he found that he was deliv-ered from tobacco and alcohol. He was saved and re-ceived the Holy Ghost.2fi 27

IX.Attend a church that believes in the power of God.Go where the men are with the anointing of God. Don'tbe ashamed to go into the prayer line. Go to the altar.Help in the prayer rooms. Stay so busy praying forothers that you forget yourself.A man was about to freeze in the snow when sud-denly he saw a man covered with snow almost frozen. He became so busy saving that man's life that he saved

his own life. He did not freeze to death.X.

Be filled with the Spirit. That is a commandment(Eph, 5:18). When the unclean spirit leaves your bodyyou are left empty, swept and garnished (Matt. 12 :44).Some people stay empty. They try to match wits withthe devil. This you can't do. You must be filled withthe Spirit. Put up a sign, "No Vacancy". Then whenthat unclean spirit returns he cannot come in.God gives you power over all power of the enemy. You shall receive that power after the Holy Ghost hascome in (Acts 1 : 8).Without the power of the Holy Ghost in your life,to help you fight, you are like a soldier boy without agun. You are like a ship without a sail. You are pushedabout by every tempest.

Be prepared to be tempted. Jesus was tempted. Youare no better than He. Many months after a man issaved he suddenly feels like he is not saved. If he saysthat he is not saved he isn't. You have what you say(Mark 11 :23). Many months after you are set freefrom alcohol you may suddenly be tempted. The crav-ing may return suddenly. Don't say, "I have it back."Quote a Scripture and pray. Resist the devil and he willflee from you. Stand firm against that thing. It is not anatural craving. Itis the power of Satan to resist you.If you will not agree with it; if you will stand firm itwill leave in just a few minutes. You will be strongerthan ever. You may go for years without that battleagain. All the time you are growing. Soon you are sostrong spiritually that you are so much larger than it,that it does not bother you.XI.Seek the anointing of the Spirit. Stay full of theSpirit. Peter was a full man. So was Paul, Jesus, Ste-phen and others. If a glass is full of water there is noroom in it for kerosene. If you are full of the anointingthere is no room for alcohol in your body. The yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing(Isa. 10 :27). The anointing that you have received ofthe Lord abides in you. Whether you feel it or not,it is there. Jesus is with you alway even to the end ofthe world (Matt. 2R:20). He will never leave thee norforsake thee."Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? ...Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerorsthrough him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that

neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, norheight, or depth, nor any other creature, shall be ableto separate us from the love of God. which is in ChristJesus our Lord."

There is power in agreement. If any two of us onearth shall agree as touching anything that we shallask it shall be done for us. We do not have to be in thesame church, or the same town. Anywhere on earth weagree it shall be done.A man in Waco was addicted to alcohol. His sistertook one of my prayer cloths and put it under his pil-low. He was suddenly set free. He began serving theLord. I never pray over these cloths until I feel thepower of God in my hands, and feel led to do so. ThenGod sends results.Neil Frisby was bound by alcohol. He was sent tothe state institution. He even went to the snake pit. Heeven saw demons dancing before him. On a furloughhe was reading one of my books. He was set free andstarted to church. Now he is preaching and deliveringothers.

XII.Don't spend your money for alcohol or tobacco. Whydo you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? (Isa.55 :2). Money represents your strength. Your strength28 29

is your very life. Your life is a part of God. It is divine. It is a sin to waste God's money. If you are God's child, then all you have belongs to the Lord. You are not yourown. You are bought with a price.

XIII.Keep your mind on the Lord. Don't believe the ad-

vertisements that lie about alcohol. Eve first began tolook. Then she took. Her mind first dwelt on that sin,or she would never have yielded to it.David first began to look. Then he took. Had he been

busy that day he would not have been looking. He stay-ed away from the battle that day.An idle mind is the devil's workshop. Keep your mind

busy at something worth while. Then you will not betempted so much.Commit thy ways to the Lord and your thoughts shall

be established. The way to quit thinking of an evil habitis to replace that thought with good thoughts. Memor-ize Philippians 4 :8. Do what it says. Then you willthink about that which is pure, honest, and true. Youcan be doing something better than watching beer ad-vertisements.Look on alcohol as you would a rattle snake that

comes and wraps himself around you. Don't treat thedevil nice. If you love the world the love of the Fatheris not in you (IJohn 2: 15). If you will come out fromthe world and be separate, He will receive you; if youwill touch not the unclean thing (II Cor. 6).XIV.Don't wait any longer. That habit is like a big snake

that wraps around you. It is growing each day. Soon itwill be large enough to squeeze your life out of you.In this life is the only time you will ever have to get

rid of that filthy habit. Jesus says that whenHe comeshe that is filthy will be filthy still. Exactly the waydeath finds you judgment will find you the same way. Many people train their children to use alcohol and

tobacco. Many babies are born crying for, craving, andreaching for these things. Itis in their blood.XV.Change your associates. You pray that prayer, "Lead

us not into temptations". Yet you walk right into them. Many people will go where angels dare not tread. Theyhave no protection. No wonder they yield to tempta-tions. They match wits and strength with the devil.Nine-tenths of your temptations are brought about

unnecessarily. You just walk out where they are, whenGod does not want you to.Quit running with your old associates. Birds of a

feather flock together. If you let them know whereyou stand you will not be bothered with them anymore. You won't have to quit them; they will quit you. Tellthem you are through hanging out at the old places.Tell them you have better company and a better placeto go. The way to quit the old associates is to get betterones to replace them. XVI.Memorize scriptures. You overcome by the blood and

by the words of your testimony. Say what God says.Testify what He does. The Bible is the Word of Histestimony. Memorize Luke 10:19.What you say becomes a part of you. Speak the truth.

Read and say, "I can do all things through Christ thatstrengthens me." "He that is in me is stronger than hethat is in the world", "Nothing is impossible unto me".Heavenly Father, I take authority and dominion over

every evil spirit that tries to hold anyone who readsthese lines. I rebuke that spirit now in Jesus' name. Letyour strength and power flow through each and every-one of them. I command them to be set free now! Thepower of Satan is broken! Amen and Amen.
