ALCL (Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma) in patients with breast implants



As opposed to systemic ALCL which can occur anywhere in the body



these rare cases have predominantly appeared in the scar tissue that forms around the implant is not

cancer of the breast tissue



Reports of this condition have been noted around the world in

very small numbers



and the increased risk of developing this problem in patients who have had

breast enlargement is only slightly higher than the non-breast

enlargement patients



The location of implants should be considered and should be discussed

with your surgeon to determine which options best suit your needs



The implants can be placed above the pectoralis muscle referred to as

subglandular or it can be positioned under the pectoralis muscle called

submuscular placement



Your surgeon will discuss the best position for patients depending on

individual anatomy, breast shape and the presence of fatty tissue



An incision site can be performed in different locations including the



underarm, around the nipple or areola or in the inframammary fold



Your surgeon will be able to discuss the pros and cons of each method



and it is important to remember that regardless of the location for

incisions, permanent scars are most likely to occur



Scars are always visible, they always take time to mature and the degree

and quality of a scar can never be guaranteed



Scars can be influenced by personal family and racial factors and cannot always be controlled by the surgeon

individual healing rates



and in particular what the surgeon has to work with prior to surgery
