JERSEY SHORE WOMAN NEWSPAPER TM Breast Friends FOREVER n October of 2006, Erika Rech and her cousin Mike Ruane found out that one of their family members was diagnosed with stage 3 Breast Cancer. In less than a year a second family member was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer and another relative was advised by her doctors to have a prophylactic mastectomy to prevent a future cancer diagnosis. Throughout diagnosis and treatment, these two 15 year olds witnessed first hand the devastating effects that cancer can have on a family. The impact this had on them motivated these high school students to make a difference. Erika and Mike began researching the structure of non-profit organizations with the vision of creating their own organization to help women and their families struggling with the financial burden that ensues with a life threatening illness. Both had accumulated money over the years from birthdays, communion and confirmation gifts which they used to finance the launch of “Breast Friends Forever” based in Middletown, NJ. Sales of T-shirts, bracelets, candy and asking for spare change in front of a local supermarket helped fund the early days of this new non profit organization. They make it clear that Breast Friends Forever does not raise money for a cure for breast cancer. They raise money to help women and families who are strug- gling in our communities. “We have met amazing women who have been laid off from their jobs, or suddenly find that their disability has run out and are finding it hard to make ends meet. These women that are struggling sometimes need help with a heating bill, or paying for a wig to wear while going through treatment.” Breast Friends Forever already has chapters in 6 states: New York, Massachusetts, Georgia, Tennessee, Illinois and Pennsylvania with additional requests from 19 more states. “When we were 15 years old we didn’t anticipate that we would grow this big or this fast—it has been amazing.” Even though both are in college now and busy with studies, they continue to grow the organization. They are currently introducing a new campaign teaching the importance of self exam called, “Check Yourself Out”. On March 3rd, 2012 they will be holding the 4th annual Breast Friends Forever Gala, “Celebrating an Evening of Hope, Determination and Courage. Breast Cancer Awareness month is in October, but breast cancer affects people 12 months of the year.
