Building Committee UpdateSanctuary Concept Drawing

Forums & Feedback On June 3, Wynne Yelland of LOCUS Architects presented three concept alternatives of the chancel and sanctuary at a Sunday forum gathering. These concept drawings are now posted in the welcome area for anyone to see and comment. The purpose of these concepts is to explore alternatives to generate excitement and response. The building committee remarks that these are not final designs, but more beginnings points for further development. No final decisions have been made yet.

About 200 people attended the forum and comments were gathered from table discussions and individual submissions. Thank you to everyone who attended; the comments were so helpful to the committee and they greatly appreciate the time and thought that was given.

Provide Your Own FeedbackThe same questions have been set out by the drawings which are on display in the foyer. Interested people are encour-aged to review the concepts and place their comments in the response box next to the drawings. You can also review the drawings on the building page accessible from the First Lutheran website at firstlutherancr.org/renewing

Mark Your CalendarsBased on all of the feedback gathered, Locus will continue to refine the concepts and be back with us on August 12 to present the resulting design.

Design & Construction Timeline•August 12 – Final Chancel Design Proposal•October 3 – Construction Documents for Bidding•Nov. – Feb. – Bidding and Selection of Contractor•Spring – Congregation Vote to Approve Contractor •April 22 – Construction begins day after Easter•Late Fall – Completion

Wynn Yelland of LOCUS Architects presents at the forum.

To Kneel or Not to Kneel The Question of Holy Communion

There has been active discussion about the design of the chancel and the use of altar rails and kneeling. The building committee will continue to include an altar rail design similar to what we have. This will allow for continuing the practice of kneeling for communion at the traditional service. These rails can also be removed to allow flexibility in worship and use of the sanctuary. The council has also requested a study of communion practice and chancel design so that the congregation will have a broader understanding of the issues. This study group will bring a report back to council and the congregation by early August. The report will include responses from the congregation about current communion practice as well as gather insight from knowledgeable sources on worship and communion from a Lu-theran perspective. Congregation responses were received at the June 3rd presentation and an additional time for response is set for July 14-15.

Council HappeningsLike many FLC members, church council members have spent the last few months engaged in discussion and discernment around various aspects of the building project. In addition to thinking about chancel layout and communion practices. We have dreamed about how our church building could enhance worship in both the near and distant future. One of the themes that continues to come up is that of relationship. How does our physical space affect our relationship with God and with our church family? We are considering things such as, how to maintain connections to each other when we are temporarily displaced from our house of worship. How can flexibility of seating or different types of spaces within our sanctuary bring members together?

We also consider the practicalities within a building project. Council is mindful of being a good steward with the monies given for the renovation and ensuring those monies are spent wisely. We discuss where will worship when our building is unavailable and how we can worship in a way that has the least impact on weekly services. We also are regularly updated on the timeline for the building project and the efforts the build-ing committee are making to keep things moving forward. Throughout all of these aspects, we are so fortunate to have pastoral, church staff, and building team leadership in moving the building project forward. Many people are working together and putting forth much effort to bring the project toward a fruit-ful conclusion!

A Wrap-up of a great week of Ministry:We hear a lot of words every day from a lot of different people.

Words from our grown-ups, our teach-ers, our classmates, our friends, on the tv, and the radio. Most of the words we hear are good words, words we can trust and that make us feel good. But some-times we hear words that aren’t so good, or words we’re not sure we can trust. Not every word we hear is trustworthy. But this week we learned that God’s word IS trustworthy. Psalm 12:6 says, “The words of the Lord are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold re-fined seven times.” This week we read four stories from the Bible that help us to know and be sure that God’s word and promises are GOLDEN.

On Monday, we read the story of God’s Promise to Abram. Abram and Sarai prayed every day that God would give them a child. One night, God told Abram that his descendants, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, great-great-great-grandchildren would one day be more numerous than the stars! Abram trusted God’s words, and soon he had Sa-rai welcomed a baby boy, named Isaac. We learned that God’s promises are GOLDEN. In Art we made sun-catchers to remind us of the sun and stars, and all the promises God keeps to all of us. In Science we made a constellation finder. Just as Abram looked to the stars, so can we, to see evidence of God’s goodness toward us. In Service, we colored cof-fee sleeves from Brewevd Awakenings, to share some happiness and joy with all God’s people.

On Tuesday, we read about Isaiah’s prophesy, foretelling of Immanuel, “God with us.” God was coming to God’s people – to show them how much God loved them. Immanuel, Je-sus – God’s GOLDEN SAVIOR, came to earth to show God’s people how God wants us to live. In Art we made Nativ-ity Story Stones. On each of five stones we colored a character from Jesus’ birth story. We can use our stones to help us remember and retell the story of Isaiah’s prophecy fulfilled, Immanuel, God with us. In Science we made our own prophe-cies, or predictions, about how to clean a penny. Only one way we tried worked. We learned that there are many paths in the world, but one path of love that God desires from us. In Service, we made Rice Sock Buddies: socks colored in fun shapes and patterns, then filled with rice to be used as a heating pad or other comfort item for all kinds of humans, and even animals, in need.

On Wednesday, we learned that God’s GOLDEN love lasts forever. As Jesus and his friends were at the temple one day, the overheard people talking about how beautiful the temple building was. Jesus reminded his friends, and all who would listen, that all the things we see will pass away – they will not last forever. But God’s love DOES last for-ever. We can trust God’s GOLDEN love. In Art we made a bracelet with round beads and golden string. We talked about how a ring or circle shape has no begin-ning and no end, like God’s love for us. In Science, our leaders had us walk on

eggs! We thought they could break, and some did, but most were strong! And we could walk on top of the eggs! Like God’s love, the eggs were strong. In Ser-vice we made No-skid socks for people in the hospital or nursing homes. These socks we made with puffy paint designs on the bottom so those wearing them won’t slip, and their feet stay warm.

On Thursday, we read the story of Philip and the Ethiopian. Philip, a fol-lower of Jesus, encounters a man from Ethiopia on the road. The man is try-ing to understand God’s word, but he needed help. Philip talked with the man about Jesus and explained what God’s words said. The man was amazed at what Philip told him and believed God’s GOLDEN words. Philip baptized the man and God’s love filled the man’s heart. In Art we made a special prayer journal, where we can talk to God. We also made a golden glitter jar that helps us focus our thoughts on God. In Sci-ence we got to decode a secret message that reminded us that God’s words are GOLDEN. In Service we wrapped up our other projects, then colored Summer placemats for the St. Luke’s Living Cen-ters nearby.

Also every day in the week, we had the opportunity to experience Story and Stretch, where we used our bodies in yoga to tell the story we were studying each day.

Renovaré. Spiritual . Transformation .

Renovaré begins again September 10—JOIN US!

Renovaré Spiritual Transformation Group members wound up this year’s session with a study of James Bryan Smith’s book, The Magnificent Story. Together we consid-ered the stories we’ve been told about the gospel, Jesus, the Christian life, and where we fit into that story. Smith provided a foundational framework of beauty, goodness and truth upon which to base our lives and our faith. Here’s what some of the participants had to say…

I have always been deeply grateful for the opportunity to participate in Renovaré at First Lutheran, but when former Pastor Jessen made mention of how inspired he was by the Spiritual Transformation offerings at FLC, I was suddenly more aware of how wonderful and special my church is! -Sheila Anderson

Renovaré has been a welcomed spiritual growth opportunity for me. I love the thoughts and wisdom of the group of women I study and share with in a very nonthreatening environment. It challenges me to dig deeper in my faith journey and to live as Jesus asks us to. If you haven’t tried it, you're missing a wonderful fellowship experience. -Judy Barnes

The readings and discussions at Renovaré tell us that God de-sires to have a closer relationship with all of us. Jesus is full of beauty, goodness and truth writes James Bryan Smith in the Magnificent Story. This discussion is a reminder that God's beauty is all around us if we open our eyes, if we take time to listen, taste and smell the beauty that is present in nature and in humanity. During Renovaré, we learn to laugh, cry, love and support one another as we share our faith jour-ney. It is in companionship with one another that we grow into a deeper relationship with God. I invite you to come and have a relationship with God and with one another."-Jasmine Wu

It is such a delight to gather with other Christian women ev-ery week to learn more about God’s love for us. The readings and discussions give me new insights and inspire me to strive to be more Christ-like.-Marlene Bey

The Fall Session Of Renovaré Begins the week of Septem-ber 10. Please consider if you have just an hour and a half a week to open yourself to God and community in a life-giving Renovaré group. Four groups at convenient times are offered.

Contact Marcie Watson, Director of Spiritual Transformation in the church office at (319) 365-1494 or [email protected] to learn more or to sign up.

Favorite MemoriesFormer Associate Pastor Walter May (1991-1996) FirstLutheranwasjustafitforme,IlovedthepeopleandstaffandI really enjoyed meeting with the different committees that met in people’shomes.Myfirstimpressions;Iwasamazedandsurprisedbythe Vacation Bible School, both by the number and the wonderful vol-unteers who led the event.

Another memory of the first days was the tre-mendous turn out of First Lutheran members who came to help us paint our house, we painted a six bedroom houseceilingtofloorinlessthantwodays. There are so many memories but a big one is having to move the Altar to the Paramount Theatre for our worship service. Larry Lundgren gathered a group of us to move it he had us laughing as he told of other adventures FLC had tried like having live animals in a Christmas service. One highlight was the building addition and watching it allhappenfromourtemporaryofficespaceacrossthestreet. A big highlight for me is our music programs, Brett and Marita along with the other directors do a wonderful job with our choirs and music. I enjoy FLC worship and music. The years I served at First Lutheran Church were wonderful and unforgettable years for me and my family. Peace, Walter

Thoughts from a TherapistDear friends of First Lutheran Church,

Summer time is here once again. With the longer days and abundance of free time summer brings, parents sometimes find themselves struggling with their child’s behavioral issues that may not have been present during the school year. In this installment of “Thoughts from a Therapist,” we address tips that parents can use to maintain harmony within the home during summer break.

Creating structure and a consistent routine is the backbone of keep-ing summer chaos at bay. Assigning household responsibilities to each member of the family is an excellent way to build structure, and balancing out work and play time is a useful skill parents can teach children. Maintain an age-appropriate sleep schedule and healthy diet to keep behavioral issues in check.

Sometimes, parents feel as if they have tried everything to manage their child’s behavioral issues and need to reach out for support. Summer is the perfect time to address behavioral issues that may be arising, so kids can start off the school year with a set of tools that can help them succeed in their education.

LSI offers flexible appointment times for behavioral health and therapy services. If you or some-one you care about might benefit from these services, please contact me at [email protected] or call 888-457-4692 to set up an appointment.

Be well!
