The minerals are coal, salt, sandstone, limestone, freestone, iniilatones, marl, copper, lead and cobatt. Coal is largely worksd near Stockport, and is found in Wirral. Bait is olitalned in great quantities from mines and salt springs at Northwich, N«ntwich, Middlewich and Winsford; it is nianufaotured fl>r the supply of England and for the export trade.

Tlie country Is waferod by the Mersey, the Dee and tbe VeavfT, and their tributaries tbe Dane, the BolUn, the Peoveir aud tbe Wlif^lock. The climate is moist, and, with tlie s<rf|, ia favourable for pasturage; the rich dairy-land produces tbe famoui clieese. Many agricultural and market (!Hrden products are also raised, stimulated by the demand in Liverpool, Manchester and other populous manufac­turing towns. . The great tongue of land between the Dee and tbe Rfersej fa called Wirral, and includes above 100,000 acres and a population of 121,348; the southern suburbs of Liverpool are seated on Us northern shores. The friths of the Dee and Mervoy are navigable for sliipping, and liave on thorn the leaporU of Birkenhead and Chester. The Weaver, which falls into the frith of the Mersey, has been made navigdbJe for Teasels of a hundred tons.

The canals nre mnny, and among them are the Grand Trunk, or Tr»?nt and Mei'sey canal, tbe Bridgewafer conal, tbe Chester and Nantwlch cnnol, tite Macclesfield canal, the Eliesmere canal, Shropshire Union conal and the Peak Forest canal.

Cheshire ia connected with the great system of railway transit by several Hues, diiefiy connecting with the south and continuing the Lancashire communication. The London and North Western rallwtiy is the chief of these, passinj; fiom the south by Stafford, Crewoand Warrington to the north, and by Runcorn across the Mersey to Liverpool. From Crewe branches pass to Stockport and Manchester on the north-cast, to CJiester and Birkenhead on the north-west, on the south-wcot to Shropsbiro and South Walea, on the south-east to tbe Pottery District. FronrChester lines run to Holyhead in N ortli Wales, and thrftugb ShrSjwsbury to the Welah borders and to Soutlj Wales. From its contiguity to South Lancashire the manufactures of tbe district have extended into this county, and Inclnded thoseof cotton and silk,fustian, woollen, tvorstedj flsx, lace, ribbons and trimmings, hose, boots and bats; co^on printing and dyeing are also carried on. Ship'building, ehieHy nu tfie Mersey, rope-making and sail-cloth ( also tqaRUfaotui e of chemicals, soap-boiling and tallow chandlery, bbt salt is the principal product of the county. Tbe paper manufacture is small, and so is tlmt of pottery. Brewing and malting are not carried on so extensively as in many other shires.

Bricks arc made extensively; there are some small works for tiie copper, lend and tine manufactures, and there are some inarhine work^.

Chester is the seat of a bishop, within the province of York: tlie diocese comprises the whole of the county of Chester, with the county of the city of Chester, nnd that part ok south-west Lancnshire which embraces the towns of Southport, Wigan, and Warrington. It is divided into tlie two archdeaconries of Chester and Liverpool; and these are airain subdivided, for the purposes of administration, into fifteen rural deaneries, viz., Chester, Fro<isham West, Frod-sb.im Eost, Middlewich, Nantwicb, Mulpas, Macclesfield South, Macclesfield Korth, and Wirral, in the county of Cliester; and Liverpool Nortli, Liverpool South, Prescot, North Meols and Ormskirk, Winwick, and Wigan, in tbe county of Lancaster.

Tbe history of Cheshire in the Iberian, Celtic nnd Belgian periods is almost a blank. The Romans occupied the county during mony years; Cheater, tl<e ancient Deva, was the station of the 20th Legion, and the county was inter­sected by many Roman roads, the remains of which may still be traced in difiarent places. After the downfall of the Romans, the Welsh held It till about 607, when it fell under the power of Ethelfrith, King of Bernicia; but it was re­covered h^ the Welsh, who held much of it till it was again taken by Egbert in 828, and annexed to tbe kingdom of Mercia, since wliich it has always been held by the English. For several centuries it was tbe scene of frequent warfare with the Wielsh. During the Parliamentary war Cheshire was hotly contested; but in February, 1646, tbe Royalists were subiaued.

William the Norman made It a county palatine for his nephew, Hugh Lupus, whose dynasty held it for two cen­turies; it has been since 1237 an appnnaue of the eldest sons of tbe king, who hold the Earldom of Chester, with the Principality of Wales and Duchy of Cornwall, giving a nominal suzerainty over the West of England.

By the Act 1 Win. IV. cap. 70, nholixbing the palatine jurisdiction, tbe sbireis joined with the North Wales circuit. Chester is the shire town and aeut of tlie assizes and quarter iCMOUS.

The rock occurs just on the east side of u great dislocation, called the " Red Rock Fault," which we shall describe further on.

The Yoredale Rocks.—These beds rest upon tbe limestone just described and attain a total thickness in this region of 4,000 feet. Tliey extend from Congleton Edg» to St. James south of Macclesfield, and thence eastward for three miles and then run up the valley of tbe river Goyt to a point about half-way between Taxall and Pott Shrigley. They consist in the lower part of black shales alternating with thin black earthy limestones (perhaps the equivalent of the Upper Limestone Shales of other districta), then cornea a considerable thickness of hard fine-grained sandstone, sur­mounted by alternations of dark shales aud sandstones. Fossils are scarce, 6rona^i^e«, Chonetes, Productus,kc. have been found in Congleton Edge.

The Millstone Gi-it.—Tbe beds which bear this familiar name have been sub-divided by Professor Green as follows:—.

1st.—Grit, or Rough Rook, with featlier-edge coal. Shales, with a thin coal at the bottom near Buxton.

2nd.—Grit, or Haslingden Flags^ Shales, with two or three thin coals.

3rd.—or Roaches Orit. Shales.

4th.—Kinderscout Orit, generally in two beds. Tbe total thickness of these beds is as much as 3,000 feet,

in tlui north-east of Cheshire, near Marple; but they thin out southwards considerably. The sa^idstonea are very massive, and of a coarse grain—often conglomeratic in fact.

The feather-edge coal is n very variable seam, about 3 feet in thickness: it is finely exposed in the railway cuttings and river clifi's, near New Mills.

Tbe Millstone Grit can be traced from near Macclesfield, running north-east by Rainow, to New Mills, and thence along the Guyt to Marple: It also forms the moorland region of the extreme north-east corner of Cheshire, between Longd^n Dale, Fcatlierbed Moss and Holme Moss, and is

as Lepidodendron, Sigillaria and Calamitea are not un­common, with the shells Aviculopecten and Ooniatitcs in tbe roofs of the little coals.

The. Coal MeasurBS.—The Cheshire Coal-field is a prn-longatioii of the extensive coal-field of South Lancashire,

6 CHESHIRE. running due south from Oldbnm by Stah bridge and Hyde to .Macclesfield. The Lotver Coal 'Meaa'un^ rest upon the Millstone Grit, and include some thin seams ot coal, known us the Gannuter Coal, the Bakestone Dale Coal kc. The Middle Coal Measures contain tlie cliicf workable seams, which crop out about two miles to the east of Stock-l)ort and Poynton. There are from six to ten scums, of good thickness and quality; the k)we.st is the Rcdacre viim, which is identical with tbe famous Arley, or Roy ley mine of South Lancashire.

Fossils.—The ordinary coal-measure plants, already enu­merated for the Millstone Grit, occur in fair abundance.

Anthracosia, the common coal-measure shell, also occurs, and the iron-stone nodules yield remains of fishes; every­thing shows that here, as elsewhere, tbe coal forests grew in mighty swamps near the sea, on an area which underwent Irequcnt upheaval and depression.

In 1870 there were 39 collieries at work in Cheshire, and they raised 584,380 tons of coal, besides about 2,500 tons of fireclay, 46,600 tons of oil shales, and 1,600 tons ol iron ore. The amount of coal remaining to be extracted was estimated in 1871, by Mr. Dickenson at 200 millions of tons.

Tha Neston Colliery.—We must not dismiss tbe coal question without mentioning that coal is worked at Neston, on the north side of the river Dee. The beds here are evidently a continuation of the seams wliii'h form the Flintshire coalfield. The measures dip to the north-east, und probably lie under all tbe peninsula of AViiTall, and pass under Liverpool itself, but at a considerable, and as yet unknown depth. Coal has been proved also on the east side of the Dee, north of Chester.

Scenery of East Cheshire.—The tract of land formed by the old Carboniferous rocks, which we have been describ­ing, constitutes a bold and billy country, tbrming tlie west ilank of the Pennine Chain. Several hills rise to a height of above 1,000 feef, as Cloud Hill, uear Congleton (3rd Grit), 1,190 lent; Tegg's Nose, near Macclesfield (3rd Grit), 1,300 feet; source of tbe Goyt, 1,000 feet; Eddisbury Hill, 1,000 feet; Northern Noncy, near Kerridge, 930 feet. The height of Marple Church is 024 feet; the Cage in Lyme Park, 882 ffeei; Porlt Moor, south side of Lyme Park, 1,350 feet, kc.

Tbe strike or direction of extension of the strata is north and south, aud in this direction we see linos of hills nnd cdcarpments to run with wonderful regularity, the " scarps " being formed of tbe hard sandstones, while the valleys between have been excavated by rivers out of tho softer shales. The whole country rises at once from the Plain of Cheshire on the west: it is cut off from it in fact by a great line of dislocation known as the Red Rack fault, which has been traced along the west side of Congleton Edge by Astbury lime works, the North Rode viadnct cross­ing tbe River Dane, Broad Oak Reservoir, Macclesfield, and thence nearly due north out of the county. On the east side of this great fault the beds have been heaved up several thouaanda of feet, and from the top of the elevated mass all the red sandstones and marls which once stretched continuously eastwards have been worn ofi'. The hard beds of the Carboniferous formation, however, have been better able to withstand denudation and now stand up in bold relief. Another dislocation, known as the Anticlinal Fault, runs parallel to the Red Rock fault, about 3 miles to the east of it.

THE PERMIAN FOKMATION.—Tbe Lower Red Sand­stone is found on tbe east of Stockport, forming a tract l i miles in width, and narrowing southward until it ends east of Poynton. Many sections are shown in the banks of the Mersey, near Stockport, where the roik is seen to be a bright red, sometimes atriped and mottled sanilstone, very soft and crumbly and without pebbles. The beds dip to the westwards. A little outlying patch of Permiaus also occurs at Torkington, near Hazel Grove: tlie bods here are only to be seen in tbe brook-courses.

THB TRIAS, OB NBW BED SANDSTONE.

It is in Cheshire that the Triassic formation attains Its chief British devoloproent, both in thickness and in the extent of surface occupied by it.

At first sight it seems almost hopeless to fix any definite lines marking subdivisions, in the great mass of red sand­stones and marls, which attain a total thickness in this county of over 3,000 feet. By long continued and patient woik in the field. Professor Hull has been able to oonstruot the following table, showing the various beds from below upwards, and to trace and map them at every point to which the formation extends. The thickness of each bed in Chfshire is aieo given.

and means variegated, in allusion to the bright and varied tints of the atone. As these are the lowest Trinsvic beds, we find tlieui exposed in tbe west of the county, and they, as W4:ll as theoverl)ing strata, have a gentle dip or incli­nation to the euatwards. The upper and lower beds ore soft reddish sandstones, whilst the ])cbble beds tietween contaiu vast numbers of well-rounded quartz pebbles, and usually form tiie top of the first of tlie two serle.s of escarpments, which can be traced in Triassic districts; the second escarp­ment—further to the east—being due to the bard beds at the base of the Keuper division. Very fine sections of tbe Pebble beds are exposed in the banks of tlie Dee, at Holt; thence we can trace the Bunter beiis by Chester and tbe various subdivisions are well shown at several points In tbe peninsula of Wirral, both on the coast, aa at Burton Point (junction of Pebble beds with Lower Mottled Ssndatone), West Grange Hill, West Kiriiy, Eastham (ditto), Illlbre Point, the " Red Nosos" at New Brighton (Upper Mottled Sandstone), and in various quarries inland at Shotwick, Birkenhead,&c. Tbe Bunter is a splendid water-bearing formation, and wells sunk in it near Birkenhead are now yieldint? a total of more than seven millions of gallonsdaily, whilst Liverpool is deriving an equal quantity from the same rock, on the northern side of the Mersey. Tbe town and works of Crewe are supplied with water of singular purity from a deep well in the New Red Sandstone, sunk at Whit-more station, on the recommendation ot Profestsor Hull, affording anotiier proof of the importance of geological knowledge to ourevery-day life and interests.

The Keuper Beds.—On tbe Continent we find thick beds of a shelly limestone—the Muacbelkalk, resting upon 4be Bunter, but these arc absent in England, and we infer that this region was probably elevated and formed dry laud tbr a time, to sink again when the Keuper strata were being deposiUjd. Confirmation of this theory is obtained from the fact that where the junction of the Bunter and Keuper beds is exposed, the tbriuer are seen to present a worn, uneven, or eroded suriuce, telling of a long interval of time, during which they were exposed to dcnudiing Influcncea.

The lowest Keuper bed ia a hard conglomerate and abova it come lit(ht red, yellow, or white sandstones, jluldlng buildinsf-stoneof good quality. Then come the " Wnter-stunes," 60 named by Mr. Ormerod, .fr»m an appearance on the surfaces like watered silk, although tbe term is now generally understood to apply to the eoploua flow of water which these beds yield when tapped by a boring. Next we get a great thickncss-K>ver 1,000 feet—of Bed M&tlti witli beds of rock-salt near the base, and an irregular bsnd called tbe Upper Keuper sandstone, about 300 ioet frout the top.

All the plain of Cheshh'e east of the Peckforton Hills U composed of these Keuper beds, but the monotony of tbe sur­face is relieved by one or two striking escarpn;ienta, which we will first describe. Between Malpas, Tarporley ami Frodsham, tliere exist several faults, running north and south, which with tbe unequal hardness of tbe strajla have produced escarpments of considerable abraptness and alti­tude. Tbe Peckforton Hills rise to a height of nearly 1,000 feet, as at Larkton HIU, Lee Clitf, Cttrd«n Clig; Raw Head nnd Beeston. Their western slopes are formed of BiuUer sandstone, and tlie summits consist of the hard eonglomcrate basement b«Hl of tbe Keuper. To tbe north and south they are cut off i>y cross-faults, and on tbe east their boundary is a north and south fault with a downtio'ow to tbe east which brings in the Keuper marls. Springs burst out oil aloug the line of this east fault, from Beeston Castle to Mslp&a, and a lode of copper ore baa been worked in it at Gallantry Bank:

At Alderley Edge in tbe north-eaftt of tbe eoooty we get another elevation formed uf Keuper satidstoftc and con­glomerate. The Edge runs east and weat for about 9 mil* a from Chorley to Haresfield, and rises to a height of 660 feet. Carbonate of Copper occurs here also, and tha ore 1» now worked: it is from the occurrence of copper ore in th«m that the Keuper beds derive their name, Keuper being derived from Kupfer, the German word for copper.

The Loioer Kmptr 8and*tone$ are extensively quarried at Storeton HHl and New Brighton, near Blrk<i«h«'ad, and at Delaiuere, Manley, and In the Peckforton UUls. The

DIRECTORY.] CHESHIRE. beds are often traversed by sun-cracks, and foot-prints of a remarkable reptile—the Labyrinthodon—are not unfre-quent on tbe surfaces of tbe slabs.

Keuper Marls with Rock-Suit,—Beds of salt have long beeu known to exist in the Keuper Red Marls of Cheshire, beneath the towns of Northwich, Winslbrd, Middlewich, {Sandbach, Lawton, Nantwicb, &c. There arc two beds of rock-aalt, the first is found below Northwich at a depth of 120feet, and is 76 feet thick; it was discovered in 1071) during a boring for coal. About a century ago, an agent of the Dake of Bridgwater's bored 30 feet bdow the upper salt bed and struck another—lower—bed of salt, which tunied out to be from 90 to 120 feet thick: of this fine bed about 16 feet in thickness of the purest part is now mined at Northwich. A great deal of briue is also pumped up, and being evaporated about 25 per cent, of pure salt is obtained. This comes chiefly ft-oni rain-water which has percolated through the upper salt-bed. The efTecls of the removal of thick mosses of rock from beneath the surface have made themaelvea very seriously felt ut Northwicti. Thesorface there ia gradually sinking, so that houses have to be removed or rebuilt, and quite a lake is being formed at one point, along the course of a small brook that ran tato tbe river Weaver.

To explain the original formation of the salt we must Imagine the Triassic rocks to have been deposited in great inland salt lakes. Tlie excessive aaltness of the water and the quantity uf salts of iron, &c. conveycil into it by rivers, were inimical to animal life, of which accordingly we find scarcely a trace. Occasionally the waters were so concen­trated as to deposit their excess of salt in beds more or less thick. Great quantities of carbonate of iron were broaght down by the river waters kc. and on exposure to the air tbis was rapidly converted into peroxide of iron, by tbe cicape of the carbonic acid. Such wa» tlie amount of oxide of Iron present that the minute particles of sand or mud, as they were depositml on tli« bottom were each en crasted with a pellicle of it, and the marls nnd sandstones consequently have a more or l ss deep red colour.

Cheshire are very probably owing to subsidences uf the surface caused by tbe dissolving of beds of salt whicli once lay beneath. The Red Marl used formerly to be largely dutr and spread over the laud as a top-dressing, and the hollows of old marl-pits may still be seen in many fields. A line drawn frorn Burley Dam to Audlem marks its nortliern eilye. Here we sen red and variegated rubbly marls foruiing the top of the keuper. Then coino the Ithu3tic beds, composed of very bard grey marls and sandstones, capped by sands, shales and limestones of the Lower Lias. A fault runs along the eastern edge of thU outlier, wliicb extends southwards past Frees to Edstaston.

THE DRIFT.—tiood work has been done by Messrs. i)e Rnnce, Slione, Mtic kintosh, Reade and others in investiga­ting the deposits of cl.iy, sand and gravel, which are spread so thickly and cotitinuoUHly over the greater part of Chealiire aud Lancusliire. A triple division appears to liave been made out, \ii. an Upper and Lower Boulder Clay, with snuds and gravels between. The Boulder Clays are full of fragineniH of foreign rocks, often striated and pollnhed, and appear to have been lirouKht by glaciers or dropped from melted iccberga. The Middle Sands may mark nn interval in tbe intense cold of this glacial period. From this drift deposit many shells an<l fragments of shells have liceii obtained by the gentlemen named above, and they are of species wliich now Inhabit the Northern or Arctic seas. Flue .soclions of tliose glacial deposits are exposed at Dawpool, and ut various other clilf sections in Wirral, and they extiiid thence more or less all over the Red Marl of the Plain of Cheshire, usually completely masking the strata below.

PaEiiieToiiic MAN.—Tbe remains of early man appear to bfi very scarce in tliis county, but one or two linportaut *' finds " have occurred. A celt or stone axe was found near Tranuiere which had part of its wooden handle still remain­ing ; the gn-atcr part of tlie wood had perished, but enough remained to sliow tliat the handle had passed in a alightly diagonal direction towards the upper end of the stone; it is now in the Mayer Museum, at Liverpool. Again, the historian Stukeley states that in cleansing tbe moat at Tabley, near Kuutsford, " they found an old Brilisili axe, or some such thing, made of large flint, neatly ground into an edge, with a hoieiu tbe middle to fasten into a iiandle; it would serve for a battle-axe." Another perforated axe, made of grit, and 7J inches long, was found nt Siddin({tou near Macclesfield. Mr. Do Ranee records a quoit-shaped, stone Impioment, 0 inches in diameter, from drilt 20 feet below tlio surface, at Stalybridge Railway Station, nnd u smaller ring of stone was found in gravel near Macclesfield in 1800.
