Easter 2015

Happy and safe EasterI would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and safe Easter.

Next to Christmas, Easter is my favourite time of the year as it provides a good opportunity for some reflection and of course Robyn doesn’t mind so much when I reach for some chocolate for breakfast!

And whether you are religious or not, Easter provides some good old fashioned family time for many people to enjoy with fishing, camping or just relaxing with their loved ones…and did I mention chocolate!

We should also take some time to think about those people who may spend time apart from their loved ones such as our front line service providers or for many in our Defence Community who are serving in roles right across our world. Please stay safe wherever you are and thank you.

Have a great Easter, please take care,

Pete.

There is an old saying dating back to the 17th century (maybe earlier): ‘A man’s home is his castle’.

Essentially, this means that a person has the right to feel safe in their home and no one should enter unless invited.

Residential homes are unlawfully entered resulting in people becoming victims of crime. There are three elements to criminality: opportunity – desire – ability.

Unfortunately, we cannot change the desire of a person to unlawfully enter another person’s home for the purpose of stealing however; we can significantly reduce the opportunity.

A person has an opportunity when appropriate precautions are not taken, such as locking the doors, key locking fly screen doors or placing an obstacle near the locking mechanism so fingers can’t be poked through the fly screen, not planting trees that provide cover for someone to forcibly enter a house etcetera.

Neighbourhood Watch NT have an internet site that contains excellent information pertaining to home and personal safety, see www.nhwnt.org.au.

When considering opportunity, a significant number of unlawful entries have occurred by the offender entering via unlocked doors or, poking fingers through fly screens and unlocking doors.

Yes, one might argue that one should not have to lock their doors – but remember,

Community Safety this Easter

we cannot control the desire of the offender nor can we control their moral obligation not to enter another person’s home without invite.

When it comes to suspicious activity, or if a person is observed committing a crime, please call 131444 and report it to police; if the matter is an emergency, then call 000.

From time to time, people have information about the criminal behaviour of a person, or they may have information that may help to solve a crime; for these situations, please call police on 131444 and provide the information or, call crime stoppers on 1800 333 000 (callers can remain anonymous when reporting to Crime Stoppers).

Expressions of Interest to build and operate the hospital opened in November 2014 and closed in January 2015.

They were assessed by an Evaluation Panel who shortlisted respondents and invited them to participate in a Request for Proposal.

The 45 hectare site near the intersection of the Stuart Highway and Temple Terrace is intended to allow plenty of room for

expansion to meet both current and future demand, 30 years and beyond.

Community consultation will begin once

Planning Palmerston Regional Hospital to get it rightmeetings take place with clinicians to see how Palmerston Regional Hospital (PRH) will be an integrated part of the Top End Health Service (TEHS) which includes hospitals and primary and community health care services.

In Australian hospitals, each type of service is categorised by a ‘Level’ – from Level 1 (the simplest) to Level 6 (most complex), and PRH will be a Level 3 service hospital.

Salvinia is a serious aquatic weed that is a declared noxious plant throughout Australia.

I have heard the concerns of local residents of the weed 'choking' Sanctuary Lakes in Gunn, and recently wrote to the City of Palmerston with urgency to act swiftly and remove this weed before it can

Upon my recent appointment as Police Fire and Emergency Services Minister, I visited central Australia and several different remote communities.

It was clear the hard work across NT Police Stations and Emergency Services teams has delivered much needed assistance through the first months of 2015.

Police Fire and Emergency Services

Meeting the hard working team from our NT Police Fire and Emergency Services

Hitting the beat in Alice Springs with Acting Commander Reece Kershaw and Kate Vanderlaan.

Chatting with Police Officers at the Beat locations, the effect TBLs are having for the local community is undeniable.

In Alice Springs to thank the hard working emergency service workers that assisted during the recent floods. Amazing people who put their community before themselves.

Graffiti Last year, I wrote to various Ministers and colleagues about the horrendous graffiti on government property in Brennan, such as bus stops and street signs.

Since then I have visited the spots where I found graffiti and am pleased to see this graffiti removed from our local area.

If you have graffiti on your property, you can contact the City of Palmerston to receive reimbursement for cost to remove it with paint or similar. I will remain vigilant on tackling graffiti in our streets.

“Thank you Palmerston!”

Member for Brennando any more damage. I am so pleased to see Sanctuary Lakes in Gunn has been attended to and the choking aquatic weed, salvinia, has been removed from harming the lake and its wildlife.

Thank you to everyone who supported the petition and to keep Sanctuary Lakes weed free!

Tiger Brennan DriveAs Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, I am proud to say the Tiger Brennan Drive duplication is on track and steamrolling ahead as a major infrastructure to link Darwin and Palmerston.

The duplication will provide a faster and safer network for motorists and I am happy that helps many daily commuters to and from Palmerston.

Work currently being undertaken includes: Installation of safety barriers at various locations between Woolner Road and Berrimah Road, mobilisation of heavy earthmoving equipment, preliminary hard rock cutting investigations, background noise monitoring along property boundaries in Bayview and Woolner Road and mass soil mixing, mobilisation and testing.

Installation of safety barriers along the length of the project site will take place over a ten day period. To minimise disruption, work will occur outside of peak hours.

I urge all commuters to stay safe and alert when driving during the upgrades, a speed restriction of 80km/h is now in place between Benison Road and Bowen Street. This change will be in place for the remainder of the project and your patience is much appreciated.

For further information you can contact the Tiger Brennan Drive Communications and Community Engagement Team on 1800 820 455 or [email protected].”

I had the pleasure of being invited to Rosebery Primary School, Rosebery Middle School, Bakewell Primary School and MacKillop Catholic College end of year ceremonies.

I could not make it to all end of year school ceremonies, however I witnessed

2014 Excellence in Academics our many talented students receive acknowledgement for their hard work and determination to achieve the best in their education.

My colleagues Lia Finocchiaro, Nathan Barrett and I sponsored the awards for leadership at Rosebery Middle School and

A changing time for all but I wish teachers and students every success in 2015, the sky’s the limit.

The end of 2014 brought with it outstanding and countless achievement across all schools.

Congratulations Elizabeth and Jasmyn for winning first and second place in the Brennan colouring in competition!

I donated a little something to Woodroffe Pandanus unit’s fundraising Christmas raffle. Thank you for being an inspiration working with our special students.
