BRENTWOOD ALUMNI ASSOCIATION’S NEW CONTRIBUTORSJanuary 1, 2007 to June 22, 2007

ACROSS THE DECADES

At one time Brentwood had no school system;students living in Brentwood had to attend Rock HillElementary School and high school students usuallywent to Clayton or Kirkwood. In October of 1919,the Brentwood School District was established andopened a school building in 1920, staffed by 7 teachers. In 1927, voters passed a $50,000 bond to constructthe high school.

In spite of the Great Depression, the schooldistrict managed to continue improvements, includingthat of filling the frog pond in front of the highschool. In 1953 it took a bond issue of $1,000,000 tocover construction of the north wing, a new gymnasium, and to reconstruct the football field to meet standardgridiron size.

The first year BHS opened, there were a totalof 24 students; only 3 of them were seniors whograduated in the 1928/29 class. The first 4-year class(1931/32) had 10 students, but history indicatesonly 8 of them graduated because the others wereexpelled for going on strike when there was a changeof Superintendent! We believe 3 of these 8 graduatesare still living, one living in the same house inBrentwood.

CLASS REPRESENTATIVES

TEACHERS' CORNER Summer in the c i ty. You remember St . Louis

summers…hot and humid. Today is no exception to the rule. The Organization of Retired Eagles has finished another coolyear of fun and festivity. In February we found the pirate’streasure and completed a bit of monkey business in May!

“Retired folks” are often asked “what do you do with allyour time?” All what time? Your BAA newsletter staff hadto remind this author to get her assignment in now. I wouldlike to share with you some of the volunteer activities thatBrentwood retired teachers are involved in. Nancy Wagoner’sexperience on a church mission trip to New Orleans was alife-changing one…hard work, primitive housing, and feelingsof both frustration and hope and a bond with a family shewould never have known otherwise. Mary Freund served asPresident of the Parents Council at Whitfield Academy.Patricia Harris serves as President of the Board of theMarian Middle School in St. Louis. This school is one of thebeneficiaries of the Kidsmart project under the leadership ofBrentwood alum Jennifer Miller. Dave Ryan continues hiswork with the Brentwood Optimists. Lois Rufer continues tobe involved with art-related committees through the St. Louis

Art Museum and the Artist Guild. Pat Killian is a mentor inthe Brentwood Schools and a docent at the Missouri BotanicalGarden. Wray Darr and some of his friends regularly travel toSt. James, MO, to help with maintenance at the Mound RidgePresbyterian Church Camp. Patty Fitzgerald volunteers withthe Brentwood Foundation. Gini Hille has done some volunteerfundraising for Swarthmore College. Jean Baldwin workswith a variety of programs at the Senior Center in Columbia,MO. Luisa Chenualt volunteered as a defensive drivinginstructor, a program of AARP in North Carolina.

I could go on and on but will simply add, “To beContinued.” Next time find out about the new careers ofBrentwood’s retirees. As you plan for your reunions andget-togethers don’t forget your teachers. Those of us attendingthe Class of 1996 picnic had a great time. We didn’t realize atthe time that it would be our last time with Jim Jackson. Itwas such a good visit. RIP Jim! You did good!

Thanks to Mary Beth Powell, retired BHS teacher, for this article.
