With Labour almost wiped out, we are now the only serious opposition party. County Cllr David Kendall explains: “If you voted Liberal Democrat locally for a strong opposition to the Conservative- controlled councils then, rest assured, that is exactly what you are going to get! “We will continue to challenge, oppose and expose what the Conservatives are getting up to locally and, specifically, how they are spending YOUR money and what they are doing with OUR resources. “We cannot support them when they spend £275,000 on two temporary finance officers in Brentwood, we cannot stand by when they spend £4.8m on PR and marketing at Essex or when they remove much-needed services such as pest-control and dog wardens. The list of our policy differences is considerable and significant.” “Opposition is still very much alive and kicking locally and they won’t get an easy ride.” Brentwood West Councillor Karen Chilvers has been appointed as Chair of the Overview & Scrutiny Panel on Brentwood Council. In her role, a position that must be given to an opposition councillor, she will be looking to closely scrutinise how the council operates, how your money is spent, resources are allocated and to challenge decisions that are made. Cllr Chilvers, who will be seeking re-election as your borough councillor in May 2011, said: “I am delighted to be appointed O&S Chair and will ensure that I challenge appropriately and lead constructively on scrutiny issues for the benefit of all Brentwood residents.” Challenging the closure of the last council-run cricket pitch. County Cllr David Kendall explains:“If you voted Liberal Democrat locally for a strong opposition to the Conservative-controlled councils then, rest assured, that is exactly what you are going to get!“We will continue to challenge, oppose and expose what the Conservatives are gettingup to locally and, specifically, how they are spending YOUR money and what they aredoing with OUR resources.“We cannot support them when they spend £275,000 on two temporary financeofficers in Brentwood, we cannot stand by when they spend £4.8m on PR andmarketing at Essex or when they remove much-needed services such as pest-controland dog wardens. AROUND BRENTWOOD WESTDerelict house in Cromwell Road: Cllr Karen Chilvers and Cllr Nigel Clarke have beenforcing action to be taken to sort out this eyesore. They now have a promise it will be tidiedup and legal proceedings are underway.

Rollason Way: Major disappointment when another 53 properties were approved by theConservatives. However, Karen is demanding that the developers provide a small children’s

play area to stop children from playing in the car parks and roads.

Boardman Place: Karen witnessed a minor accident at the entrance, caused by a delivery driver, which has been reported. It resulted in some superficial damage to the entrance.

Weald Close: Karen & Nigel have asked for junction protectors to be installed at the junction withHoneypot Lane. If you would like to add your thoughts on this please do get in touch.

High Street: The bus stop recently installed will now be moved away from houses, just a few feetdown the road, thanks to action from County Councillor David Kendall. In Vaughan Williams Waythe matter of a shelter has been subject to consultation, at David’s request, on its possible removaland a final decision will be taken soon at committee.

Dog Waste bins: Karen has asked for a review of provision in the borough, but particularly for increasing the bins in St.Faith’s and a bin to make a dog-friendly area at the green in Wharf Road. A responsible dog ownerherself, she understands the need only too well!

Warley Hill Shops: Nigel is using his considerable knowledge of running a shop in Brentwood to helpthe shopkeepers on Warley Hill. He will present his findings to the next Economic Development Panel.

81/82 Route: Despite saving this route in Hutton, the Kavanaghs Road/Crescent Road area will losethis bus service. David petitioned Tory-led county council to provide funds for it but, sadly, to no avail.

Planning issues: Call if you’re concerned on any planning issues - keep an eye on applications areposted on our site weekly.
