Crossrail, the new high frequency, high capacity railway, isset to revolutionise travel in London. Construction is due forcompletion in 2018. And with 26 miles of tunnels, buildingthis new artery passing through 40 stations is one ofEurope’s biggest construction projects.

THE CHALLENGETarmac customer Brett Concrete usedPCRM CEM I 52,5N and EN450 S Gradefly ash to manufacture 110,000 of the250,000 precast concrete segmentsthat are being used to line the 26 milesof tunnels. The consistent high strengthof our quality assured, CE marked bulkcement, which performs well with theWest Burton fly ash, delivered theperformance required by Brett Concreteto cast the vast number of segmentsrequired for timely construction. BobCrisp the general manager of BrettConcrete commented: ‘It was crucialthat the concrete for the tunnelsegments was made to a very highstrength and specification given the enduse, and to do this we had to have aconstant supply of high qualitymaterials, delivered at the right time.Tarmac were integral when it came tohelping us meet the demands of thisexceptional project and in deliveringfor the customer.’

OUR SOLUTIONTo ensure smooth production at theirfacility at Chatham, Brett Concrete tookdelivery of 8 loads of Tarmac bulkcement a day, at any time, 24 hours aday, 5.5 days a week via our Northfleetdepot. Two loads of fly ash deliveries perday arrived directly from West Burton atChatham Docks. Because materialavailability was key to Brett Concrete’scommitment on the Crossrail project, weinstalled three temporary storage silosto hold a reserve consignment of 360tonnes of bulk fly ash for exclusive useon this prestigious contract. Ian Bowhill,Distribution Manager at Tarmaccommented: ‘The dedicated silosenabled us ensure constant supply of flyash for Brett Concrete throughout theproject. During times when the powerstation was off-line for maintenance, itprovided the emergency backup neededto ensure Brett Concrete could continueto produce the tunnel segments aroundthe clock.’

RESULTS AND BENEFITSTarmac’s Northfleet site also played akey role in the recycling of excavatedmaterial produced during the massivetunnelling process. Jonathan Toyn,Senior Estates Manager at Tarmacexplained how we assisted Crossrail inproviding a sustainable solution andreinstated the rail freight link at ourNorthfleet depot to enable the transferand disposal of spoil from the tunnelconstruction sites in Central London toa nature reserve at Wallasea Island: ‘Weworked very closely with Crossrail fromthe project’s inception to reinstateapproximately 2km of rail siding atNorthfleet and make this work for bothparties.’

Tarmac’s involvement from end-to-endas both a materials supplier and asolutions provider to the Crossrailproject shows how our expertise andcapabilities help customers deliver oneven the biggest construction projects.
