Christmases are the stuff of mem-ories, but not of life in Florida.Still, while it’s fun to recall holi-days past, it’s also fun to make

new traditions with our “Floridafamilies,” as one expert describedit.

In this issue, there is a seriousstory about coping with the holi-days. For many, far from families, perhaps financially challenged, the holidays are not what theyonce were. If there has been aloss, this time of year can be very

difficult. Experts from area hospi-tals and counseling centers havesuggestions for making the holi-day season a peaceful time and atime of hope.

Family shows generations of service

MELBOURNE — The story ofChanukah is the story of religioustolerance and the fight for freedom.More than 2,000 years ago, a smallband of Jewish fighters fought themuch larger Syrian Greek army.

Under the leadership of Mat-tathias and his eldest son, JudahMaccabee, the Jews reclaimed theTemple in Jerusalem and won theright to practice their religion.

Four generations of theAbramowitz family know some-thing about defending freedom, aswell. Ben Abramowitz of IndianRiver Colony Club in Melbourne is

the second generation of soldiershis family has produced.

His father, Reuben, came fromUkraine by way of Ellis Island. When Reuben’s father, a unionorganizer, was murdered in 1907,young Reuben enlisted in the Armyto support his mother and siblings. When he retired as commandant ofthe European Signal School, thefield house at Fort Monmouth inNew Jersey and the Signal Center atFort Gordon, Ga., were named inhis honor.

Ben Abramowitz was born atFort Monmouth and always knewhe would be a soldier.

“I was born on an army post,” he

said.

“I grew up during the Second WorldWar. My father was then a non-commissioned officer and I lived inGermany until I was 13. I alwayswanted to be a soldier. I respectedwhat he did. I was one of the fewwho knew what he wanted to do attwo.”

In 1947, while the family wasstill in Germany, young Ben had hisbar mitzvah in the synagogue hisfather had the German governmentrebuild after the war. Just as in theChanukah story, the synagogue wasrededicated for Jewish worship.

Ben Abramowitz went on to

study at Virginia Tech and wascommissioned as a second lieu-tenant in the infantry. He appliedfor flight school and was accepted. He was stationed near Fort Riley,Kan., and a rabbi in a nearby com-munity invited him to a PassoverSeder. He met Irene in April andthey were married in June.

Ben Abramowitz went on tohave a distinguished militarycareer, with two tours in Vietnamand service at the Pentagon. Heeventually taught leadership andethics courses at the Command andGeneral Staff College. That wasnot, however, his greatest legacy.

Holidays present challenge for many

VIERA — For many people, the hol-iday season brings to mind familyand friends, the aroma of baking, thefun of buying and wrapping presentsfor the kids. For many in Florida, families are far away, money may betighter and it sometimes just doesn’tseem worth it to prepare when it’sjust for one or two.

“It can be difficult for seniors,”said Kathy Ridner, care manager forOne Senior Place in Viera. “BrevardCounty is a beautiful place to retire, but families are fragmented. Anaging senior starts to have healthproblems and can’t travel. They findthemselves alone. Finances con-tribute to the challenge.”

For those who must celebrate theholidays alone, Ms. Ridner said thatchanging traditions can help.

“You can make new traditions,”she said.” Invite the neighbors. Youcan scale back decorations and mealpreparation. Have carry-out or go toa restaurant. Reach out to neighborand church communities. If you’rein a senior community, there areactivities. Redefine the definition offamily. Family comes in all shapesand sizes.”

Ms. Ridner mentioned a couple

who lived on a block with a youngfamily. The children’s grandparentslived out-of-state, so the couplebecame “adopted grandparents” andshared events with them.

Ms. Ridner also said that volun-teering is a good day to cope.

“It feels better to do somethingfor someone else,” she said. “Get anangel from a tree, donate a coat orfood, serve a meal at a soup kitchen ifyou’re up to it,” she said.

“It’s hard sometimes. People get alittle bit stuck because it feels sadand it feels and looks different. Startto find joy in smaller things. It’s notabout spending $200 on gifts. It’sabout the feeling and the thought. It’s shifting the definition of whatmakes us feel joy.”

Marilyn Cromer counsels thosedealing with grief at VITAS Innova-tive Hospice, a community partner ofOne Senior Place. She said that it’simportant to plan for the holidays, especially for those who have suf-fered a recent loss.

“Set realistic goals,” she said.“Understand that this year will bedifferent. Allow others to providesupport. Of you did all the runningaround in the past, give yourself per-mission to ask for help.”

While you may not be able to doall the things you used to do, it’s

i m p o r -tant toestablishnew tra-ditions.

“Tryto avoidcancelingthe holi-days,” shes a i d .“That willmake youf e e lworse. “Ify o ua l w a y shad 20for din-

ner, perhaps does a breakfast buffetor go out to eat. Help someone else. There are senior places that offer ameal. Help others who don’t have aplace to go.”

“If this is the first time around forthe holidays after a loss, honor thememory of the loved one. You canlight a candle or talk about specialmemories.

“The first year after a significantloss, the first holidays, anniversariesand birthdays are intense. Think inadvance of how to honor andremember the loved one. That tendsto establish a tradition. Do it again

next year.”One idea Ms. Cromer suggests to

children and adults is a memory box. “You can decorate it and write lit-

tle notes about the loved one or putin photos or things symbolic of them.Pull it out if you’re feeling lonely. Ifgranddad loved to go fishing withyou, the memory of going fishingmay give a moment of pleasure.

Other suggestions include honor-ing the person’s memory with adonation to a favorite charity ordoing simple things that gave youpleasure as a child, like stringingpopcorn or making constructionpaper rings to decorate a tree or thehouse.

It’s important to understand thateven with planning, a loss is sad.

“Give yourself permission to feelsaid,” Ms. Cromer said. “Sadnessduring the holidays is so pronouncedbecause we see so many lookinghappy. It’s OK to be sad or angry. Wetry to say there’s no one way to grievethat’s right. It’s what works fortoday.”

For those wishing for help in copingduring the holidays, there are supportgroups that deal with loss. For moreinformation, call Kathi Ridner at(321) 751-6771 Or MarilynCromer at (321)752-2534.

Moore’s law, is the effect coinedback around 1970 by Cal Techprofessor and entrepreneur

Carver Mead, when observing that thesize and price of a transistor halvedevery two years. The effect of this ‘law’has brought us everything from theiphone and Droid, to huge flat screenentertainment centers that festoon ourwalls with ever greater frequency, offering life like, life sized color imagesand the sounds of all things imaginable.During this same period, hearing aidshave evolved from the rather simpleclass a, b, or d amplifiers of our parent’stime, to ultra miniature, open plat-form, audio computers. The top ofclass today are even equipped withbroadband, ultra low powered radiotransceivers piggy backed right onboard, making them capable ofconnections with such as your TV, cell

phones, lap tops and other electronicdevices.

As this inter device communicationscapability proceeds with the logicaldevelopment of both operational andinterface software, one of the key easeof use restraints currently plaguing our`entire industry, that of issuing pro-graming and operational instructionsto the devices, will be greatly simpli-fied.

Soon, several manufactures will beoffering devices with programingapplications utilizing existing, openplatform programing tools and avail-able RF technology. This will allowdiscreet, secure, wireless access, programing, communications withand control over all manner of ear leveldevices, all with inherent audio andvisual signal processing capabilities ofa degree only dreamed of in the past.

As this newer, more consumerfriendly equipment becomes available,

so to will the opportunity to reachmore and more consumers as that allimportant cost/benefit ratio continuesto move further in the consumer’sfavor.

The FDA recognized this evolution inequipment in 2009 when they estab-lished a new classification of productsknown as personal sound amplifica-tion products and established for theirsale outside of the normal and highlyregulated hearing aid delivery system, provided they aren’t sold as hearingaids, or to correct a hearing loss.

Further changes and challenges tothe current delivery system were inevidence last month when the largesthealth insurance provider in thecountry, United Health Care announcethat they had purchased their ownhearing aid manufacture and weregoing to start offering consumer directsales, with prices ranging from $449 anear to $999 and ear, without the

requisite visit to any professional, orlicensee, excepting their phone, orInternet screening system. While thisannouncement drew immediatewarning from “The Better HearingInstitute” regarding do it your selfhearing aid fitting, it drew much morethan that, in the form of a cease anddesist letter from the attorney for theInternational Hearing Society (IHS)and angry letters threatening furtheractions, by the Academy of Doctor’s ofAudiology (ADA and the AmericanAcademy of Audiology (AAA).

However, regardless of how loudthese professional associations howl, the handwriting is on the wall. Greaterconsumer choice, value and hearingare here now for those who want to gothrough the current system and moreand more avenues are opening to theconsumer everyday that make betterhearing easier and less expensive foreveryone.

December 2011 FOREVER YOUNG

Christmas pig roast about family as much as foodFor me Christmas has always

been a time to enjoy familyand lots of good food. As I

look back over the years I must say Ihave fond memories of each andevery one.

But a few standout. One that I treasure happened in

the middle 1980’s when my youngersister Linda, her husband and twosons moved west of DeLand to alittle spot called Paisley. If you arenot familiar, it is a very small ruraloutpost about five miles west of theSt. Johns River that is completelysurrounded by the huge OcalaNational Forest. Their new homewas situated on a very large andhilly lot.

At that time, Linda and I had lotsof extended family living aroundCentral Florida and we decided totry and get them all together for aholiday pig roast. As roast master itwas my job to go up to Pierson tobuy a fully dressed hog of nearly

100 pounds. It was fun going to thecountry slaughterhouse to pick outour pig and spend a few momentswith the man who had raised it.

At my insistence it was to be themen who would do the cooking.First, I dug a long shallow pit andcovered it with steel bars. Some ofthe others went into the forest andbrought back truck after truck ofhard wood. The night before Christ-mas Eve, we began by building agiant bonfire. As the wood burneddown we shoveled the hot coalsunder the pig and readied ourselvesfor a long night. To do this jobproperly the hog must be slowcooked with lots of love and atten-tion.

The key to the whole thing wouldbe my secret recipe barbeque sauceof which I concocted about fourgallons (you can never have toomuch sauce).

As the night began, my helpersnumbered about 10 but as Linda’swell-fortified homemade eggnogstarted to take effect, the menbegan to look for a spot to curl upand nap. Around midnight thecracklins (pig skin, for you city folk)reached crispy perfection and weall eagerly dipped them in mydelicious sauce and ate our fill.Having regained our senses some-what, a TV-VCR set up was broughtout and we all watched one of theearliest versions of “A ChristmasCarol.” As we hissed and booedScrooge and cheered for BobCratchit and Tiny Tim we pouredwhiskey all around, foregoing theeggnog this round.

Now, for a big time pig roast likethis to be successful the animal

must be turned regularly. That taskrequired four men to each grab aleg and make the flip. Unfortunate-ly, by 2 a.m. there was only a quar-ter of that number awake — me —and I was becoming undependable.

A couple hours later, my firstcousin Randy woke up long enoughto stagger over and fall onto thepicnic table, dumping out theentire four gallons of prize-winningbarbecue sauce. As the sun cameup, we were all asleep and the pigwas getting cold. Along about 10a.m. of Christmas Eve we were ableto give the pig a couple hours ofconcentrated attention and thepart that wasn’t burned seemed tobe cooked pretty well.

That afternoon all of the women-folk began to show up with theirdelicious side dishes and desserts. That evening we all ate outdoorsand most agreed that the hog had

Change is good! (usually)Times change, dress changes,

Even ‘THE CHANGE’ haschanged.

I know some of us (usually themen-folk) yearn for the ‘Old Days’when things were simpler (For

them!) but I don’t think I would havefared very well at all. I cannot picturemyself in a woolen bathing suitrushing home from taking the kids tothe beach so I can have a home-cooked lunch waiting for my husbandwhen he gets home from the polls…while fighting hot flashes … Duringprohibition….

Families have certainly changed;when I go to my grandson’s highschool football games I find myselfsurrounded by my son, his youngerchildren, his beautiful new wife, herchildren, my ex-daughter-in-law, hernew husband, their new daughterand my son’s ex-mother-in-law. Eachand every one of us is standing, yelling and slapping each other on

the back when our team scores. Most symptoms of ‘THE

CHANGE’ are now treatable to acertain extent, shortening the latenight hours spent fanning ourselveswith the freezer door considerably.

Holidays may be one constant inour lives, but the way we celebratehas certainly come a long way.

When my children were young weusually had the big family day at ourhouse. Due in large part to the factthat I was usually absent from thefamily meetings where location wasdecided, my husband’s family wouldconverge in the morning, cousinsusually began running and screamingin all directions just about the time

Macy’s parade began, we would befinishing the last piece of pie (for themoment) just as the game came on,then coffee and more pie during halftime.

As my family aged and grew withthe addition of “significant others”,the arrival of my grandchildren andnew sets of in-laws, we re-inventedour celebrations as necessary.

I began serving a brunch on theholidays. We all brought somethingfor brunch and my children couldspend half the day with us then befree to enjoy turkey and trimmingswith the other side of their families.Contrary to popular opinion, (usuallyfrom the other side of the families) Idid not arrange things this way tohave the pleasure of my grandchil-dren’s company when they wereawake and bright in the morning, nottired and cranky later in the after-noon. Nor was it my intention to bethe Grammy who loves them the

most by filling them withhand/turkey cookies or gingerbreadmen just to send them to their othergrandparents. (But I have to admitthe words “favoritist Grammy in theworld!” did spread a special kind ofwarmth throughout my sleep-deprived soul, as did the nap that Iwas now able to grab later in theafternoon).

But still we grew. None of us havehomes large enough to accommodate45 plus people and still have room forall the cousins (second and thirdgeneration now) to run and scream,so we once again became harbingersof change.

Our latest change-vention is ahuge gathering in a nearby park. Weare blessed to live in a place that livesup to the title “The Sunshine State,”so renting a pavilion at any of thebeautiful parks in Brevard works out

my mother. My brother’s old fash-ioned biscuit warmer holds store-bought dinner rolls; shorts andtennis shoes are better suited to flagfootball games than white shirts andties.

The annual Padrick “Oldsters vs.Youngsters” volleyball game (theyoungsters won this year! That’llteach my kids not to let me play ontheir team!) has replaced sitting onthe couch, yelling at football playerson the small screen.

There are special challenges tohaving the traditional dinner outside, away from stoves and microwaves, but it’s always a learning experience. You can’t blow out Sterno (my eye-brows should grow back in a monthor so). If you bring canned cranber-ries, you really should bring canopeners. If a mom doesn’t actuallysee a Grammy pass the third piece ofchocolate pie to the child sitting

behind a bush, it didn’t really hap-pen.

Actually there are some thingsthat never change in this life, and Iwish them on each and every personreading this. The warm, sweet smellof a tired little child who has laughedand played so long that he falls intoan exhausted slumber in your lap; thefeel of cool grass between your toeswhen you shed your shoes to cool offafter running a full 10 feet beforesomeone steals the ball away fromyou, the lovely peacefulness thatpermeates your whole body whenyou look around and realize there isno place in the whole world youwould rather be.

turned out OK, considering the cooks’ lapse insobriety and hence, attention. No one but meseemed to mind that there was no sauce.

Right at the top of the hill on Linda’s propertygrew a Florida cedar tree over 30 feet tall. Each

family had brought a strand of colored lightsfrom their own tree and we strung them on thebig cedar. When it was completely dark weplugged it in amid “oohs” and “aahs.” Later wewere told it could be seen for miles.

Of course, the women began to sing Christmassongs and the hungover men tried to join in aswell as they could. It was certainly a Christmasto remember.

Sadly, my sister Linda, who was a true baby

boomer (born in 1947), passed away in 2003. Butmemories like these of that crazy pig roast keepher in our hearts — especially during the holi-days.

These days family is still so important thistime of year. My wife Lana and I center ourholidays around our daughter Shayla’s beautiful8-year-old, our granddaughter Delayna.

We would like to wish a merry Christmas to youall. Please enjoy each other while you can.

Imagine getting a phone call informing you thatsomeone has used your name and Social Securitynumber to apply for a credit card, or receiving acollection notice in the mail for a delinquentaccount that isn’t yours – but is attributed to yourname and home address. Every day, consumersfind out someone is illegally using their personalinformation to make purchases and open newfinancial accounts, like credit cards and loans.

Undetected, identity fraud can lead to difficul-ties in applying for a mortgage, loan, new creditcard or bank accounts – even if you’ve had greatcredit for years. The road to recovery may be along, aggravating journey, especially when you

don’t catch fraud immediately.Last year, 8.1 million adults were the victims of

identity fraud, according to a recent JavelinStrategy & Research Identity Fraud Survey.

Here are some tips to help protect yourself froman identity nightmare:

Online:

When creating passwords, don’t use informa-tion that easily could be linked to you – like yourbirth date, Social Security number, phone num-ber, or the names of family and pets. Using a mixof numbers, letters, and characters to create yourpassword makes it harder for others to guess.

Change your passwords every 30 days, and useunique passwords on each site you access.

Whether you’re providing financial informationfor a loan or placing an order online, be sure thesite you’re using is secure. Look for a URL thatbegins with “https://” and has a “closed padlock”

symbol in the lower right-hand corner of yourbrowser.

Using and regularly updating anti-virus andanti-spyware software on your computer can alsohelp to safeguard your information from identitytheft.

Never email personal information, such asaccount numbers or your social security number,to anyone, not even to yourself.

Offline:

It’s a smart practice to review credit card andbank statements as soon as they arrive to ensurethat all activity on your accounts is accurate.

U.S. consumers are entitled to one free creditreport a year from the three main credit bureaus.Regularly reviewing your credit report lets yousee if there are any interactions with companies

On a typical day, Ms. Rogan andher team of certified therapeutic rid-ing instructors might have an autis-tic child, a child with Down syn-drome and two with cerebral palsy.

The lesson incorporates games, therapy, stretching and a fun peri-od,” Ms. Rogan said. “It’s one of thebetter activities for autism. There issocial interaction with the horse and

the riding instructor. “It requires attention and focus-

ing while they are learning how toride. You see parents in tears whenthey see the child giggle. They’venever heard that.”

There are special challenges forriders with physical disabilities.

“If they’ve been in a wheelchairall day, there’s a back rest and a footrest,” Ms. Rogan said. “Few muscleshold them. We take them out of thechair and put them on a horse. There is no back or arm rest and theyhave to start using core muscles.

“If they can’t sit, we use a waistbelt. The only type of disability wecan’t handle is a quadriplegic. Wehate to turn people away.”

For Pam Rogan, who has lovedhorse all her life, this is a dreamcome true. She grew up in Brooklynand asked for a horse every Christ-mas and birthday. Now she hasthem and she has the joy of seeingthem help children smile.

“When you see an autistic childhug you and thank you, you can’t

replicate it anywhere,” she said. “Wesee it every day. Horses don’t judgeand they don’t ask questions. Kidsand adults with physical disabilitiessay that no one else will give them achance or let them try. We challengethem to do more. They can’t controltheir own bodies, but they can con-trol a 1,200-pound animal.”

Aftering collecting as much informa-tion as possible on your ancestorsby interviewing relatives, finding

pictures, documents, tombstones, etc., itis time to get down to some seriousgenealogy research. One of the firstresources that is the most important andeasiest to find, is the federal census.

The U.S. government has conducted ahousehold census in every state, every10 years since 1790.

The census records from 1790-1930can be searched by the public except for1890, which was destroyed by fire. Theyare arranged by states and then bycounties, and then in, many cases bytowns or districts. Some states also tooktheir own census in odd years..

The 1850-1880 census records includea separate mortality census listingeveryone who had died in the previousyear. There are also slave census recordsfor 1850 and 1860.

Many researchers ignore these recordscompletely, or only look at one or tworecords for their family, assuming theyhave learned all the facts they need. Each family should be followed all the

way back through the census every 10years, picking up children, parents, brothers and sisters, in-laws and anyother relatives that show up in thehousehold or neighborhood.

From 1790-1840, the census onlynamed the head of the household, andgave the number of people living in thehouse. From 1850 forward, eachmember of the household was named, with their sex, age, and place of birth. Each census became more complex, asking more questions, adding relation-ships, occupations, parents’ places ofbirth, number of years married, numberof children given birth to, and otherpertinent clues.

Starting with the 1930 census, andworking backward, you should look atyour family, taking down all the infor-mation given and looking at the neigh-boring families.

Often, other family members areliving nearby, and these need to benoted, also. If there are other familieswith the same surname, they are

possibly parents, brothers, uncles andcousins. John’s father may be living nextdoor to him, and in his household isgrandma or grandpa. Viola!! You havethree generations laid out on one or twopages.

As you work your way through eachcensus, you will find differences in thespellings of names, family members willcome and go, and the family will movearound the country. Each census takerhad his own style. Some used onlyinitials, some used only a first nameregardless of which name is preferred.Sometimes the correct name is used, the next time it will be a nickname. Agesalso will change from census to census.Use this information as a guide and notas absolute fact.

The first order of business is censuswork.Information gathered here will makethe rest of your research much easier.Brenda Knight SmithTreasure Coast Genealogical [email protected]

Felicia, a life-sized puppet with big, black curly hair.

“I wear her head,” Ms. Rice said.“I have to use a remote control forher mouth. I can’t talk live becauseof the fan in Felicia’s head becauseit gets so hot. I have to use pre-recorded material because a livemicrophone would pick up the fan.”

Ms. Rice loves to do Christmasshows and Felicia has a holidayoutfit. This year, though, is a bitdifferent. Ms. Rice’s husband had aheart attack and is unable to helpher. What she needs for Christmasthis year are some volunteers tohelp put on the shows.

“It’s hard to find volunteers tohelp,” she said. I need at least three good helpersto do a professional show. Theyneed to be able to give time at least

once a week, be open to directionand be able to lift their arms overtheir heads for as much as sevenminutes. One of my 11-year-oldstudents thought he did it for 10minutes and it was only about aminute and a half. Finding volun-teers would be awesome.”

Ms. Rice has 300 puppets andshe buys their clothes at Goodwill. She is always on the lookout forsize 3T.

“My husband says they’re betterdressed than he is,” she said.

Ms. Rice, who is a member ofthe Orlando Puppet Guild and thePuppeteers of America, is also anillusionist and magician. Pup-petry, however, remains her firstlove.

“I do it as a puppet ministry,”she said. “God gave me a gift andresources to purchase puppets. “Ido it to share the art and the mes-sage.” she said.

Common sense plays a huge rolein the prevention of heartburnand indigestion, but all of that

goes out the window when you sitdown to a holiday dinner. Indigestionand heartburn come with overindulging over the holidays butholiday binging doesn’t have to causepain if you plan your meals using somedigestive soothing herbs. Incorporat-ing herbs into the meal providesnatural relief preventing the gas andbloating that comes with being asstuffed as the turkey.

Herbs can be added to vinegarsfor salad dressings; I like to make myvinegars about 3-4 weeks earlier for astronger flavor using herbs likerosemary, garlic, basil, oregano, lemon grass or lemon peel in eitherwine vinegar or cider vinegardepending on the meal or the herbs. You can also add herbs to soups, salads, vegetable dishes, in potatoes, stuffing, rubbed onto the turkey or

even in deserts.Fennel can be used in breads rice,

soups or in vegetables. In the book“Back to Eden” Fennel is said to beuseful for gas, an overly acidicstomach, cramps and spasms.

Basil is good for reducing theacidity in tomato sauce that cancause gas and pain for some.

Anise is great for an overly acidicstomach caused by eating too manysweets. My Grandmother must haveknown this because many of hercake and cookie recipes includedAnise.

Ginger is one of the oldest knownstomach healing remedies and one

of my personal favorites. I alwayshave crystallized Ginger in mykitchen and I munch on it through-out the day. It’s a mild bitter so ithelps to stimulate digestive enzymesmaking nutrients more absorbableplus its volatile oils have carminativeactions helping to dispel gas andbloating. Ginger also tastes good insoups, vinegars, gingerbread, pies, cookies, ice cream and in ginger ale.

Rosemary helps to calm thedigestive system reducing theamount of gas that is produced. Itcan be used in vinegars, potatoes, soups, breads and in butters.

Cinnamon is a nice carminativeherb that helps to calm the muscularlining of the digestive tract easinggas and bloating. Cinnamon tastesnice in ciders, pies, and cookies andmixed with sweet potatoes.

Some other herbs that could beused for preventing indigestion are

coriander, oregano, thyme, marjo-ram, turmeric, cumin, sage, clovesand cayenne.

And why not prepare a nicemulled cider using 1gallon cider,1cup brown sugar, 2 teaspoonsallspice, 1teaspoon whole cloves,1teaspoon ground ginger and 1-3cinnamon sticks simmered for atleast 15minutes. After strained it canbe served hot garnished with orangeslices.

Get creative this year with yourmeal, not only will it taste good butyour guests won’t have regrets onhow much they ate.
