Town Square EaDoInstructor: Anton Sinkewich

Fall 2014 | Urban Design Studio I |6 weeks

Town Square “EaDo”, located in East Downtown Houston, replaces Minute Maid Parking Lots (A, B, C) with urban infill

development. The Square consists of apartments, retail shops, a cinema theatre, hotel, bookstore, market, restaurant/cafe,

and a central park enclosed with a children’s playground and water feature. The Square’s design retains as much as the

existing infrastructure as possible while providing a walkable community. The project provides pedestrians with 10ft vehicu-lar lanes, a running trail rapping parking lot’s “B” & “A”, various amounts of green space, and programmatic building place-

ment. For example the theatre is located at the intersection of Texas & Bastrop St. while the restaurants are located along the edge of St. Emmanuel, therefore providing adequate spacing

that is too close to drive but reasonable to walk.

Marketing the UnderpassInstructor: Anton Sinkewich

Fall 2014 | Urban Design Studio I |10 Days

“Marketing the Underpass” is located at the intersection of Rusk and Highway 59. The project brings together local busi-ness ventures, to incorporate an appealing transition space

between Houston’s East End and Downtown Districts. The proj-ect consists of aluminum panels with integrated lighting, an

aluminum gate, LED cylinder screens, and signage connecting the LED screens. The design introduces a bike path, jogging trail, and a sidewalk pavement change. The concrete bike

path and jogging trail are located in between the columns of the Highway and aluminum gate. The project creates a bond between both east and downtown Houston, while providing a

contemporary appeal for users.

Mucha Museum Instructor: Benjamin Shacklette

Spring 2014 | Comprehensive Studio |16 weeks

The Mucha Museum dedicates itself to the works of Art Nouveau artist Alfonse Mucha and the historical heritage of Prague.

Located along the Kampa Islands of the Cezch Republic, the structure enhances the context along the river. The building is elevated on steel columns, protecting art exhibitions from any flood plains. The ground floor consist of a café, restaurant, gift

shop, and mercantile. Upper levels of the facility hold a theatre, art studio, Mucha’s Slav Epic, and an array of observation decks

that take you on a tour of Prague itself. The museum’s exterior skin consists of aluminum cladding wrapping the entire building. The Mucha Museum displays a balance of modern architecture

interplayed with historical context.

The Rodin Museum located in Seoul, South Korea served as a precedent study for construction class. The structure of the building is

a combined steel and concrete structure. Steel frames distanced by 10m50 carry a concrete slab. The columns are in the center of the building; cantilever beams carry the side areas. The concrete slabs

are kept visible and provide the mass necessary for thermal comfort.

the 20m50 wide building. Opaque horizontally sliding openings allow natural ventilation and shading is assured by motorized steel

elements made of a steel mesh.
